He needs to get MILKED
will smith hockey after he's done with those
let me | macklin celebrini
Pairing: macklin celebrini x nurse!reader
Prompt: macklin has always been distracted by you, but this time it ends in an injury. good thing the love of his life is a nurse, but the not so good thing is heβs surrounded by his family and cannot properly thank you
requested!
βMack.β RJ whispers to his older brother. βMacklin get up.β
Youβre dragged out of sleep as you hear your boyfriend shift behind you, his arms wrapping tighter around your body as he pulls you deeper into his chest.
βRJ, go away.β Macklin mumbles, clearly just woken up as well from his little brother.
βDad wants you downstairs, stop being disgusting and get up.β RJ complains, and Mack groans. One of your boyfriendβs arms leave you, for what you can only assume is Macklin trying to shove RJ away. But the youngest Celebrini child doesnβt budge, and Mack knows that Rick will come up here if he doesnβt come down.
βYeah yeah, Iβll be there in five minutes.β Mack says, and RJ mumbles something as he leaves the room.
You groan as the warmth of your boyfriend begins to leave you. And he whispers the quietest sorry before slipping fully out of bed.
As much as Macklin loves seeing his family in the summer, he doesnβt always love waking up at the ass crack of dawn to do workouts with this father and brothers. Not when it means leaving you behind in bed. Especially not when he wants nothing more than to stay wrapped protectively around you, breathing in the familiar scent of your favorite lotion.
βGo back to bed, baby.β Macklin whispers, kissing your temple as you subconsciously shift to his now empty side of the bed. You snuggle your face into his pillow, and Mack tucks the blankets firmly around you. And as much as Mack wants to tell his father heβs skipping it today, he knows he canβt. So against everything he wants, he turns away from you, and goes outside to meet with his dad and brothers.
So, by 7am, all of the Celebrini men found themselves outside. A thin layer of sweat coats Mackβs spine as he reaches down for the resistance band.
RJ groans as he starts, and Robyn looks up from the rim of her sunglasses, watching as her youngest son gripes about being tired. Aiden stays relatively quiet like he normally does during work outs, and today so does Mack. Because his mind is somewhere else, on someone else.
But before Rick can say anything to his sons, everyoneβs attention moves to the sliding door as it opens.
You step out, and while his family gives you a warm greeting, itβs Mack that canβt seem to look away.
You are still wearing one of Mackβs shirts, the slightly faded Sharks logo on the front, his name and number plastered across the back. Your pajama shorts are loose around your thighs, and you yawn as you hold your favorite mug in front of you. Coffee steams from the top, and Mack watches as you rub at your eye under your glasses.
He truly has no favorite version of you. Because everything about you is perfect to him. Whether itβs you in your scrubs after a shift, you dressed up for an event, you in comfy clothes as you help steal bits of whatever Will is baking. Mack does particularly love when youβre lying in his bed, with nothing covering your body as he kisses your skin. But right now? He might have a favorite version of you. You in his clothes, with your glasses on because itβs too early to put in contacts, while his mother pats the space next to her and you settle down like youβve been here your whole life.
βMack.β
But he doesnβt respond. Not as he watches you laugh at something his mom says, and watches as she throws the light blanket she has over her legs over yours as well.
βMacklin.β
βWhat?β He asks, finally turning his attention back to his dad and brothers.
βHeβs being gross again.β RJ says to Aiden, and Mack tells him to shut it as Rick shakes his head at his sons.
βLetβs focus.β Rick says to Mack, who nods and begins with the resistance bands working on his shoulders and arms.
But his focus doesnβt stay on the exercise for long. Not as he spares another glance at you.
Your sleepy state hasnβt gone away, in fact, as you sit comfortably next to his mom, he can tell youβre moments from falling back asleep. But so can she, and she slips your mug out of your hands and lets you lean ever so slightly into her, as she too closes her eyes.
βMacklin, would you like to participate today?β Rick says, his eyes glancing between his wife and sonβs girlfriend to his middle son.
βHe canβt do anything around her.β RJ says again, clearly loving that his older brother is getting teased.
βDude.β Macklin states, and tries his best to ignore the laughs.
So, in order to prove his brothers wrong, he manages to focus for a while, before letting himself get in a quick glance at you. But thatβs when it happens. He pulls the band back at a funny angle, not fully paying attention to how much heβs moving his arm, and something tight and painful happens in his shoulder.
βFuck.β Mack says, his face going tight as Rickβs eyes immediately snap worriedly to his son.
βAre you okay?β Rick asks, and Mack nods, trying to roll his shoulder in hopes that will help. He knows he didnβt do any serious damage, but the pain stays there as he sets the bands on the ground. βAre you sure?β Rick asks again, and Mack says heβs fine before finishing the workout for the morning.
β
By dinner you could tell something was a bit off with your boyfriend. He didnβt immediately jump into the water this afternoon like he normally does when the family parks the boat in the middle of the lake. He didnβt want to try to dunk RJ, and he made no move to pick you up and throw you off the boat with himself like he loves to do.
At first, you chalked it up as he was just tired. But the nurse in you watched his movements, cataloging them as he almost seemed to baby his left side. And if you knew anything about Mack, which of course you do after being with him for two years, itβs that if heβs injured he wonβt say a thing. Aiden only offered a little crumb of evidence when you managed to stop him in the hallway that afternoon and asked him if Mack was okay during the workout this morning. But the eldest Celebrini only laughed as he told you, βI just think he was a bit distracted.β
So now, as Mack reaches for the salt shaker, you all freeze around the table as he hisses while reaching for it.
βAlright.β You say finally, deciding this has gone on long enough. βWhat happened?β You ask him, and you watch as Mack shrugs like he has no idea what youβre talking about.
But you know him better than that, so just before he can wrap his fingers around the shaker, you reach for it, and shove it back another foot.
Aiden and RJ look down immediately so they donβt laugh out loud, and Charlie lets out a laugh that she tries to pass off as a cough.
βBaby.β Mack says, giving you a pleading look.
βGod.β RJ says with a sarcastic eye roll at the nickname Mack calls you.
βGrab it.β You say with a slight shrug, and Mack just bites at his lip because he knows youβve caught on.
His family watches in silence as Mack extends a bit more for the salt, and he canβt stop the pained noise that comes out as he does.
βGot him.β Aiden says before shoving another potato into his mouth.
βHoney are you alright?β Robyn asks gently from her place across the table.
Mack nods, but then he looks at you. He can see the concern in your features, he knows exactly when you go into βnurse modeβ as he likes to call it. You get this calm look to you, even though beneath it youβre anything but calm.
βItβs really not a big deal.β He promises you, because truly he knows itβs not. It will bug him for a few days, and heβll just make sure not to over extend his shoulder.
βWas it from this morning?β You ask.
βYeah. Because someone canβt control himself around you.β RJ says, and you turn your gaze to your boyfriendβs little brother. The same little brother you normally join in teasing Mack, which is one of the many reasons RJ Celebrini welcomed you into the family as fast as he did. But you donβt join the teasing now, you wouldnβt until you know for a fact heβs okay.
βIβm going to throw you in the lake.β Mack says to his little brother.
And you force yourself to bite back your laugh as both of his parents scold him, but RJ responds with a, βgood luck trying with that shoulder.β
βRJ.β Robyn says, and you can see the determination in Mackβs eyes as seriously debates it.
But then RJ laughs loudly, his eyes twinkling with mischief. And you ease up a bit as Macklin smiles as well, shaking his head at his brother.
βYou should have her look at it.β Rick finally says, using his fork to point from you to Mackβs shoulder.
βI will.β You say, and pretend to focus back on your dinner even though you are still watching Mackβs every move.
β
βOkay off with it.β You say to your boyfriend, pointing at his shirt as you get him back in your guys bedroom.
Macklin lifts his brows, giving you a little smirk as you whack his chest.
βNot like that.β You say laughing, watching as he slowly strips himself of the black shirt.
βWhat if Iβm really good?β He asks, turning so you can see his back. Your hands place down on his warm skin, and he jolts for a second before settling into your touch.
βIf youβre really good youβll let me do this and remember your entire family is downstairs.β You say, your voice going a little more grainy than you meant it.
βThat didnβt stop you last night.β He says, and you have half the thought of smacking him again. But you look to his shoulder instead. The skin around it is slightly red, but you can tell thatβs just from him rubbing at it.
βSit down, Mackie.β You say, and you get on the bed behind him. He follows your lead, and your hands go to his shoulder and lightly press around it. βDoes that hurt?β You ask, and he tenses only slightly before telling you itβs more uncomfortable than painful. βHow about this?β You ask, pressing on it.
βNot bad.β He says, but you hesitate anyways. You run through different options in your head, the nurse in you fighting with the concerned girlfriend. βItβs okay baby, I promise.β He says, and that convinces you enough to start rubbing at it slowly.
You honestly donβt know how long you guys sit there. Mackβs head is hung down, and he lets out a little grunt every once in a while. But you stop when his shoulder finally feels normal. The muscle no longer tight or strained beneath your fingers.
βThank you.β He says so softly you almost miss it.
βHold on, Iβm not done quite yet.β You say, just wanting to check his mobility just to be sure.
He squints slightly at you, trying to read your face.
βWhat do you want me to do?β He asks, watching as your eyes roam over his collar bone and chest.
βStand up for a second.β You say, and he follows your direction instantly.
You reach out for his arm, pulling it slightly one way, and then the next. You donβt see any movement you shouldnβt, and Macklin makes no noise of pain. Your hands continue to slide over his bare chest and arms, and at one point you catch him biting back a smirk.
You eye him in a teasing yet scolding way as you continue. You have him push his shoulder backwards, then push forward against your palm. But as you go to move your hand, the tips of your nails drag slightly down the expensive of his bicep and chest. Mackβs entire body shivers, and like he can no longer contain himself he reaches for you, pulling you closely into his space.
His green eyes are dark, and his cheeks hold just a hint of pink.
βMacklin.β You say, trying to be stern and as nurse like as possible.
βWhat?β He asks, unable to hide it now.
βIβm trying to help you!β You exclaim, laughing at him.
βI canβt help it when your hands are all over me.β
βThis is medical!β
βBut itβs you, baby.β He says, and you only shake your head. He smirks again before pulling you further into him. Your hands land on his chest as you instantly look up at him.
βMack.β You say, your tone changing from the calm nurse to something else entirely. But he takes your chin in his hand, moving your face up and to the right as, his lips trail a line of soft kisses up and down your neck. βYouβre unbelievable.β You say, but it comes out in almost a whisper.
βYou took care of me, now itβs my turn to take care of you.β He says, and just by his words alone he let out a groan. Like he canβt possibly wait any longer than he has. Not as he can see the need in your eyes, not as your finger trails around his pecs.
βYour family-β You start to say, but youβre glad Macklin doesnβt take your words seriously. Instead, he takes one of his hands, and covers your mouth, leaning to your ear and whispering,
βThen you better hope you can be quiet.β

The bu vs bc headshots
thank god for a mini mic
macklin celebrini x reader
word count: 7,790
description: after you and macklin lost touch after school, itβs a surprise when a tiktok reunites you two
°°°°°
youβre walking through the city with your sister sofia. you have an iced coffee in one hand and shopping bags in the other; youβre arguing about where to have lunch.
βno, sofβif we are getting tacos, we should go to that place on seventh avenue.β
βbut thatβs a twenty minute walk.β
βit is worth it, though.β
before she can even object, a grinning guy with a tiny microphone suddenly appears in front of you. you and sofia freeze.
βhi, iβm mikey. iβm filming a quick question for tiktok. can i ask you something?β
you shrug. βsure.β
mikey holds out the microphone, while one of his friends holds up a phone.
βwho is the most famous person in your contacts?β
βwhat?β you ask, laughing.
the guy chuckles slightly at your stunned reaction.
βthe most famous person in your contacts,β he repeats.
you look at him, thinking. who among the people you know is famous? you start frantically running through names in your mind. none of your relatives, none of your current friends or classmatesβ¦no. and then, it suddenly hits you.
βoh!β
mikey perks up. βoh?β
you point at him, recalling. βmacklin celebrini. i guess.β
his eyes widen, and he laughs, a bit surprised.
βyou guess?β
βwell, that is assuming he hasnβt changed his phone number since high school.β
mikey looks at you. his friend with the camera is looks at you. sofia looks at you with a knowing smile. it gradually dawns on you: perhaps they were expecting a completely different answer.
βwait.β mikey says, leaning closer to you. βdid you go to the same school as macklin celebrini? from the sharks?β
βoh, yeah.β you shrug. βwe both played hockey.β
mikey looks shocked. βseriously?β
βyeah. not on the same team, of course. but we did a lot of the same things.β
sofia snorts beside you, because she knows youβre trying to downplay it as much as possible.
βso, you really knew him?β mikey asks.
βyeah.β
βand what was he like?β
you pause for a moment, trying to reconcile the person you knew with the image you have seen in his few interviews. honestly, he seems the same.
βgood. a really humble guy,β you reply.
ββ¦is that it?β mikey asks, glancing at the camera; he clearly expected to hear more.
you laugh. βi donβt know. he was just mack.β
mikey clearly is not thrilled with that answerβ itβs unlikely to generate the kind of views he was hoping for. you pause to think, carefully choosing your words.
βweβd run into each other at hockey-related events sometimes. you know, parties, team gatherings. weβd ride the same buses to tournaments. he was a funny guy.β
the interviewer raises an eyebrow. βfunny?β
βyeah.β you pause, smiling at the memory. βone time he spent the entire two-hour bus ride trying to convince half the team that anteaters do not exist.β
mikey bursts out laughing.
βno way.β
βseriously,β you giggle.
after a couple more questions, mikey thanks you and moves on. about thirty seconds later, the conversation slips your mind.
°°°°°
three days later, the video is posted. a day after that, itβs everywhere. βhockey tiktokβ picks it up. then sharks fans see it. and right after, macklin celebriniβs personal fans stumble upon it. the video is flooded with comments.
wait she knows mack???
THE BUS STORY β IM SOBBING
i desperately need more stories about mack from his high school days
βhe was just mackβ that is so damn cute
of course, there are always people who write nasty things out of envy, but this is the internetβ so who really cares? they donβt even know you.
you watch the video, laugh at how ridiculous you look, hit βlikeβ, and keep scrolling. after all, nothing special really happened.
what matters far more is this: a week goes by, youβre lying on the couch after work with some reality show playing on tv, and suddenly your phone vibrates. You glance at the message preview.
unknown number
youβre tempted to just ignore the message. itβs probably spam. but curiosity gets the better of you β what if itβs a discount code or some great deal? that would be cool. still, that is not really the pointβ and it wouldnβt have been anything special anyway. you open the message and immediately straighten up.
unknown (maybe: mack)
hey, itβs mack!
you blink in confusion. what the fuck? you read it again: βhey, itβs mack!β no last name, no explanation. just mackβ well, of course. he doesnβt need to add a surname or explain anything. he knows, and you know.
a second message comes through.
unknown (maybe: mack)
canβt believe i still have your number, lol
but i saw the tiktok and decided to check in on you. i know itβs been a while, but i was wondering what youβre up to these days?
howβs your knee? are you still skating?
that last message makes your chest tighten a little. of all the things he couldβve asked about, he remembered thatβ the very injury that derailed your life. years have passed. years. and yet, somehow, mack still remembers. then the phone pings again.
and another thing, anteaters still canβt possibly be real
you burst out laughingβ and suddenly youβre sixteen again. memories surface that you havenβt thought about in yearsβ as if someone had opened a dusty box at the back of the closet.
°°°°°
back then, everyone in shattuck knew one another. how could it be otherwise when there were so few kids in the school? that was especially true within the hockey community there. the teams knew each other well, since you spent practically all your time at the rink. if you werenβt playing yourself, you were watching others play. when mackβs team was on the ice, youβd sit in the stands with your own teammates; and when your team played, youβd usually spot him somewhere in the crowd.
you remember that tournament weekend when you sat side by side watching another team play, neither of you caring who won. you just joked about the way the announcer butchered the playersβ names.
βdo you think heβs doing that on purpose?β you whispered to mack.
βtotally. or maybe he lost a fantasy football bet and this is his punishment.β he laughed.
you laughed too, and thenβ when he botched a name particularly badlyβ you both couldnβt contain yourselves and nearly fell out of the stands. but that was just mack: always chatting, always making someone laugh. and he always found a way to make those long tournament days fly by.
and then came the state tournament. and everything changed. even now, nearly four years later, the memories remain just as vivid and sharpβ as if your brain had recorded everything in high definition. you remember the crowd, the noise, the excitement fluttering in your chest. you remember spotting familiar faces in the stands during warm-ups: parents, the whole family, friends, players from other teams. you even remember seeing mack and a few other guys sitting together. they had come to watch, of courseβ just as they always did.
the game itself had blurred into a shapeless hazeβ until a specific moment, that one defining instant. one second you were chasing the puck along the boards, and the next, someone slammed into you. it was a dirty hitβ late and dangerous. you remember the impact itself and the way your skate caught awkwardly. then, the unnatural way your knee twisted. and the painβ instant, blinding pain. you remember crying out before you could stop yourself, clutching your leg as tears sprang to your eyes. You knew right away: something was wrong. for a moment, everything around you seemed to go quietβ the only sound was the pounding of your own heart echoing in your ears.
then chaos erupted: teammates shouting, someone trying to pick a fight, coaches vaulting over the boards, referees rushing toward you. it was all happening at once, and cutting through that chaos was a searing, terrible pain.
at the hospital, the worst fears were confirmed: you had completely torn your acl and your mcl. your season was over, and with it, your hopes for a future in hockey crumbled. instead of the national tournament, you faced surgeries and a long recovery process. you remember looking at the doctor as he explained it allβ it was as if he were speaking a foreign language. hockey had always been a part of your life, and now it was gone.
the next few days were among the hardest. everyone tried to support youβ coaches, teammates, family, and friends. then, one afternoon, there was a knock at the door. your mom opened it, and suddenly mack and two other guys from the team appeared in the living room with a huge bag of snacks.
after that, they stopped by more than onceβ just to check in on you and share funny stories from the rink, so you wouldnβt feel like you were completely out of the loop with the team.
but then life sped up. people grew busy, and schedules became increasingly packed. mack moved awayβ first to boston for university, then to san jose. you kept meaning to get in touch with him. to be honest, he probably meant to as well. but months turned into yearsβ thatβs just how life goes.
°°°°°
now you sit on the couch, staring at messages from macklin. and even though everything around you has changed, he remains exactly the same.
you seem to stare at the keyboard for an eternity: how do you even answer this? how do you fit years of your life into a single message? how do you explain that your knee healed, but something elseβ something else never did? after all, physically, youβre fine. doctors cleared you to return to skating years ago; the scars have faded, and your strength has returned. but the part of you deep inside remembers it all. the sound of your knee snapping, the pain, the looks on your teammatesβ faces. the realization that your hockey career was over. yet you donβt tell him any of that. can you really dump all that on him in the very first conversation youβve had in years?
so instead, you write something simpler, something lighter. something that is still trueβ just not the whole truth.
you
iβm doing great! my knee has completely healed; there are no issues anymore.
okay, maybe thatβs a lie. not a lie. just not entirely accurate.
you
iβm in college now, and i really love it!
i watch your games! itβs still so strange seeing you on tv
but iβm truly proud of you, mack
you pause to reread what youβve written. then you remember thereβs something else you can add.
you
honestly, i wouldnβt have expected anything else from you
a notification pops up almost immediately indicating that mack is typing, though the message itself doesnβt appear right away. you smile, waiting for his reply. apparently, even nhl players sometimes sit there staring at their keyboards, trying to figure out what to write. finally, your phone vibrates.
mack
thatβs really nice of you to say
but iβm even happier that youβre doing well
itβs also funny that you find it strange seeing me on tv because i sometimes still feel like iβm 16 and back at shattuck
you laugh out loud. the conversation flows naturally and easily from there. itβs unhurriedβ you just share news, reminisce about school and former teammates, people you havenβt seen in years.
mack
remember that time owen accidentally locked himself in the sports equipment closet?
this makes you laugh heavily again. it feels like youβre back in high school.
later, lying in bed after the exchange of messages has finally died down, you read through them again. one message, in particular, holds your attention.
mack
but iβm even happier that youβre doing well
so simpleβ and so like mack. sincere and kind; itβs something he might have said back then, in the past.
you lock your phone and set it on the nightstand. thoughts are still swirling in your mindβ all circling back to that one question you never answered. βare you still skating?β
it weighs heavily on your heart. this is a hard truth to accept. you havenβt skated since the injury. but you tried. you would lace up your skates and step onto the ice. yet, suddenly, it was as if you were transported back to the state championship, and all the memories came flooding back at once. you breathing would grow ragged, a tightness would grip your chest, and in the end, you would have to sit down, take off your skates, and simply admit it: you couldnβt do it.
maybe someday youβll tell macklin about this. but not tonight. tonight, you can just be happy. happy that a silly tiktok video led to this, and that after all these years, he hadnβt forgotten. happy that the funny kid who used to sit by you on the bus somehow became an nhl player without losing the qualities that truly mattered.
°°°°°
the next day, youβre sitting in the student center between classes when your phone vibrates. you smile: lately only one person texts you this often.
mack
okay, i have a question
you
okay???
the typing indicator appears and then instantly vanishes. itβs as if you can see him hesitating and wavering. finally, your phone vibrates again.
mack
i had a thoughtβ feel free to say so if itβs weird
and you can totally say noβ no problem at all
seriously, no pressure, nothing like that
you
mack, what are you talking about lol
a few seconds pass.
mack
weβre playing in minnesota in a couple of days
and i was thinking maybe youβd want to meet up before the game?
you know, grab a coffee, have lunch, or something like that?
just hang out in person
you stomach does a flip, and before you can even reply, he sends another message.
mack
if this doesnβt seem weirdβ¦
you donβt even have to think about it: you want to see him. you want to know if heβs still the same, want to hear his laughter in person again. you want to see a friend.
you
mack, itβs not weird at all
iβd love to meet up
he replies so quickly that itβs clear that heβs been waiting for your message the whole time.
mack
great
i was worried it would sound weird
but thatβs really great
°°°°°
in less than an hour, youβll be seeing mack in personβ for the first time in years. youβd think youβd be nervous. you imagined spending the whole morning agonizing over your outfit, your stomach tied in knots. but instead, youβre filled with anticipation and feel surprisingly calm. once youβre ready, you send mack a text.
you
is practice over yet?
a reply comes a few minutes later.
mack
almost
coach is talking
a couple of minutes pass.
mack
still talking
you βlikeβ his message. another one comes in.
mack
save me, please
you laugh.
you
meet me here when ur done
you send him the cafΓ©βs address. itβs one of your favorite spotsβ a small, quiet, and cozy place in the city. Great coffee, delicious pastries, and a peaceful atmosphereβ no need to worry about being bothered.
mack
perfect
see you soon :)
and across the twin cities, practice has officially wrapped up. unfortunately for his teammates, mack has lost the ability to act normally. he bolts off the bench, tears off his gear, shoves it into his bag, and immediately rushes to the showers. he is simply impossible to deal with. his teammates watch the scene unfold, torn between amusement and annoyance. finally, tylerβs patience snaps.
βlook, manβ¦ you need to chill out,β he says as mack looks up from his phone.
βi am chill.β
sam snorts, and will has to stifle a chuckle with a cough.
βiβm serious,β mack says, sounding almost offended.
βmack,β toff says, his tone serious now.
βwhat?β
βyouβre vibrating. take a deep breath.β
the next twenty minutes go even worseβ if thatβs even possible. mack stands in front the mirror, messing with his hair. he fusses with it for about five minutes without getting anywhere, until will finally loses his patience.
βgod, let me help.β will reaches for mackβs head, but mack immediately bats his hand away.
βno.β
βiβm helping.β
βno.β
βmy hair is objectively better than yours.β
βexactly.β
βwhatβs that supposed to mean?β will asks, picking up on the tone.
βit means: keep your hands off me.β
will looks offended. dickie nearly falls off the bench laughing.
then comes the agony of choosing an outfit. first, he pulls on a gray sharks hoodie and walks over to the mirror. he frowns at his reflection and takes it off. he goes back to his gear bag and pulls out the teal sharks hoodie. he stares at it for a long time before trying it on, glancing in the mirror, and immediately taking it off.
βmack. just pick a hoodie and relax.β groans sam, tired of watching the fuss.
macklin sighs. βit just doesnβt look right.β
βwhy?β will asks.
toff answers before mack can. βhe doesn't want to look like heβs showing off the nhl logo.β
mack feels his face flush; tyler hit the nail on the head.
βohhhh.β will, sam, and misa chorus.
βno,β mack says, tossing the hoodie aside. βiβll just wear a t-shirt.β
βmacklin, itβs forty degrees out there,β tyler says; and he feels like shaking the kid to snap some sense into him.
βitβs fine, iβll survive.β
five minutes later, heβs already in an uber, constantly glancing at his phone and rereading your messages. years have passed, and heβs nervousβ even though it seems ridiculous, because itβs you. itβs just you. so why is there a fluttering in his chest?
the cafΓ© turned out to be exactly as you had described it to him: cozy, quiet, and small, filled with the aroma of fresh pastries. when macklin walks in, a bell chimes above the door. he spots you immediately: you sitting in a corner booth by the window, studying the menu and tapping your fingers against the table. he recognizes the habitβ a nervous tic he had completely forgotten about. and suddenly, it feels as though no time has passed at all. he remembers it all. he recalls weekends of the tournament, where you would sit beside him on the bus or between games, doing the very same thingβ constantly tapping your fingers on whatever surface was within reach.
for a moment, he simply stands there looking at youβ at how achingly familiar you seem. youβve grown olderβ thatβs obvious. youβve changed a little. but itβs still you. and before he can even begin to process the moment, you look up. your eyes meet instantly, the tapping of your fingers stops, and your face lights up with a smile. suddenly, a strange feeling washes over mack: itβs as if heβs sixteen again, walking not into a coffee shop, but onto an ice rink. and itβs feels as though the years that have passed since then have simply vanished.
you rise from your chair as he approaches you.
βmack,β you say, smiling gently.
he smiles back immediately at the sound of your voice. βhi.β
for a second, you both stand motionless, grinning like idiots and unsure of what to do next. then mack opens his armsβ and suddenly, everything becomes simple. you step forward and hug him. it isnβt one of those awkward half-hugs people exchange when theyβre no longer sure how well they know each other. itβs a real, familiar embraceβ as if those intervening years had never happened. the only difference is that heβs bigger now. much bigger. as you pull away, you have to tilt your head back a little further than before. his shoulders are broader, his arms more powerfulβ a year and a half of strength training in the nhl has clearly paid off. but heβs still the same mack: the same green eyes, the same freckles across his nose, the same smile. heβs just gotten a little bigger.
you order drinks and head back to your table. you ask about traveling for games, his teammates, rookie life, and how heβs liking san jose. mack answers with that same modesty that always drove you crazy.
βitβs cool.β
you stare at him blankly. ββcoolβ?β
he shrugs.
βmack, you were the number one overall pick. and thatβs all you have to say?β
βwhat else am i supposed to say?β
βi donβt knowβ¦ maybe acknowledge just how incredible it is?β you say, only half-joking.
he laughs. βi just got lucky.β
you groan in protest. βmack, it is not luck. you worked hard, youβre dedicated. you donβt have to be so modest.β
mack just grins. eventually, the conversation shifts to you.
βwhat are you studying?β mack asks, leaning closer across the table, genuinely interested.
you immediately perk up. βfilm and photography.β
his eyebrows go up. βreally?β when you nod, he adds, βthatβs awesome!β
you smile. βi really love it.β
he asks for more details, and you launch into an enthusiastic explanation, gesturing animatedly. you talk about the beauty of the cinematography, how a single shot can either save a film or ruin it, and how directors know how to create the right emotional mood through visuals. mack listens intentlyβ as always.
βwhose work do you like best?β mack asks.
βluca guadagninoβs.β
mack nods, though he clearly has no idea who that is.
you laugh. βyou have no idea who he is, do you?β
βyeah.β mack smiles.
βat least youβre honest.β
βalways.β
you shake your head and smile. βi like christopher nolan, too. he makes beautiful films.β
βoh, i know him!β
for the next ten minutes, you talk about what youβve learned regarding cinematography, lighting, and composition. mack asks questions, nods, and makes it clear that heβs truly listening. you mention that youβd like to shoot moviesβ if you get luckyβ or, if that doesnβt work out, perhaps get into sports film and photography. mack just smiles the whole time.
and then comes the question. the very one youβd hoped he wouldnβt askβ the kind that was easier to dodge over text.
macklin takes a sip of coffee, sets his mug on the table, and looks at you gently. βsoβ¦ do you still skate?β
your heart sinks. you look down at your coffee, meeting his gaze right now feels like an impossible task. you could lieβ say yes, you skate sometimes. you could change the subject. but mack would realize you were dodging the question. so, you simply sigh and tell the truth.
βno,β you admit quietly. he remains silent and simply waits, giving you space, because he understands there is more to it. you swallow hard. βmy knee has healed.β
βi know.β
βphysically, iβm fine.β
mackβs expression softens; he suddenly realizes that the issue isnβt really about the knee at all.
you take a shaky breath. βi tried to get back on the ice for the first time last year.β his eyes widenβ stunned by how much time has passed since the injuryβ but he remains silent. βi even managed to put on my skates and make it to the ice, but the moment the blade touched the surfaceβ¦β you shake your head, as if trying to shake off the memory. βi had a panic attack. it was like i was right back there, in that moment. and i could hear myself screaming.β
the admission feels awkward, laying bare your vulnerability and emotional pain. but now itβs out in the open. his expression shifts slightly, yet there is no pity in it, only sadness and empathy.
βi know it sounds silly,β you say, rubbing your eyes, even though you arenβt crying.
βnot at all.β
βi think it is.β
before you can look away again, macklin reaches across the table and gently places his hand over yours. he doesnβt hold your hand, he simply touches it, reassuringly.
βnot at all.β
his green eyes stay locked on yours, and for a moment, youβre flustered. not because of the touch itself, but because of how natural it feels. years ago, it wouldnβt have mattered at all: youβd ridden the bus shoulder-to-shoulder so many times that physical contact had become second nature. but nowβ after so much time, when youβve essentially become strangersβ the sensation feels so familiar. strange, perhaps, but certainly not unpleasant. you hold his gaze a moment longer before looking back down at your drink. and yet, somehow, for the first time since you started talking about it, you donβt feel awkward. you just feel tired. youβre so tired of carrying this burden and pretending it doesnβt affect you. tired of acting as if youβve fully recovered and moved on.
after a moment of silence, mack pulls his hand away and looks at his coffee. then, quietly, he says, βyou know what i remember most about that day?β
you shake your head. βwhat?β
he doesnβt answer right away, he just exhales slowly. βhow helpless i felt.β
the words take your breath away. βwhat?β
βi was in the stands.β he gives a slight shrug. βi remember how hard you fellβ¦ and how everyone sprang into action. Your teammates, the coaches, the trainersβ they all rushed toward you.β he looks you straight in the eye again. βbut there was nothing i could do. all i could do was sit there and watch as they took you off the ice.β
you look at him. βi didnβt know that.β
he smiles faintly. βwell, i never told you.β another pause. βi remember walking back to the hotel that night, thinkingβ¦ βsheβs going to be so mad that she canβt playβ¦β.β he chuckles softly.
you smile a little, too.
βi knew hockey was everything to you.β the smile fades from his face. βand hearing that you still canβt get out on the iceβ¦ it sucks.β
simple, sincere, classic macklin.
βand iβm so sorry you had to carry that burden alone.β
you donβt answer right away, simply letting mackβs words hang in the air between you. honestly, you arenβt even sure there is something to say to that. instead, you just sit in comfortable silence. outside the cafΓ¨ window, people stroll by, at a nearby table someone is laughing, a barista calls out a name to announce a drink is readyβ life goes on.
finally, you slowly exhale. βi donβt know if iβll ever put on skates again.β
the words slip out on their ownβ you hadnβt intended to say them aloud. mack doesnβt rush to object, he simply studies you intently.
βi donβt know either,β he says at last, and you look up at him. βbut i hope that one day, the rink wonβt just remind you of that terrible dayβ¦ i hope it will remind you of everything that came before, too.β
a lump rises in your throat. for the past few years, hockey and skating have been associated only with pain, loss, and fear. but before that⦠there were bus rides and early-morning practices set to loud music, inside jokes, state championships, friends, mack. your whole childhood.
you swallow the lump in your throat. βiβd really like that.β
macklin smiles. βme too.β
the conversation dies down for a moment before mack suddenly slaps his hands on the table. βanyway.β
you blink at him. ββ¦anyway?β
he shrugs. βiβm changing the subject. we earned this.β he leans back in his chair with a dramatic sigh. βwill almost got us kicked out of our hotel in seattle.β
you cover your mouth in shock, letting out a laugh. βwhat did he do?β
βhe forgot the room key.β
βand? how did that lead to you almost getting kicked out?β
βno, that wasnβt it.β you raise an eyebrow and wait for him to go on. βhe climbed onto someone elseβs balcony.β
your jaw drops. βhe did what?β
βhe thought it was our room. but he was mistaken.β
you burst out laughing. βmack!β
βhey! i know itβs crazyβ donβt look at me like that!β mack says defensively.
βwhat was he thinking?β
βnothing.β
βokay, but what happened? did he get caught?β
βwell, the poor couple staying in that room thought they were being robbed.β
youβre laughing so hard you can barely breathe. βmack, no!β
βyeah. security came running, and will was trying to explain that we were staying there. and then toff had to go downstairs in flip-flops to convince security we were actually there with the hockey team.β
you wipe away tears from your eyes. βi canβt believe it. you guys are just unbelievable.β
βyeah, will, mostly,β mack corrects.
βbut you share a hotel room with him,β you point out.
βevery day i ask myself if i made the right choice.β
βoh, come on.β
βnahβ¦ itβs actually pretty fun with him. but donβt tell him i said that,β mack admits.
βi knew it! no promises, though.β
he gasps theatrically and presses his palm to his chest.
βi fly all the way across the country to minnesota just to see youβ¦β
βreally? just for me? and not because you have a hockey game or something like that, right?β
βof course not. just for you.β
βright.β you laugh and shake your head.
he smiles. βi missed this.β
the words are so quiet you barely catch them. you tilt your head to the side, questioningly.
he looks down at his nearly empty glass. ββ¦just talking. i missed this.β
a warm feeling spreads through you. βyeah. i missed it too.β
mack glances out the window, and his eyes go wide. βshit.β
βwhat is it?β you ask.
mack checks the time on his phone. βiβve got a game.β he jumps up so abruptly that he bumps the table. βi need to be at the rink.β
you laugh. βi was wondering when you had to leave.β
βit completely slipped my mind.β
βyou forgot you have a game in four hours?β
βwell, iβm not really running late yet. i just need to get back to the hotel. i got a little distracted here.β
βiβll take that as a compliment,β you smile.
βthatβs exactly how i meant it.β
now you stand up, too. βi should probably let you go.β
βyeah.β he nods.
yet neither of you rushes toward the door. a pause settles in; you both want to say something but donβt know what. you donβt want this to end. finally, mack rubs the back of his neck.
βsoβ¦β He looks almost embarrassed. βif you already have plans or anything, just totally ignore this, butβ¦β his gaze drops to the floor for a second. βare you coming to the game tonight?β
for a moment, youβre caught off guard, the thought hadnβt even crossed your mind. he notices your reaction.
βitβs fine if you canβt.β he adds hastily. βitβs just that iβdβ¦β he pauses, thenβ almost as if heβs forcing himself to finish before he loses his nerveβ he says, βiβd really like it if you did.β
thereβs no pressure, no attempt to make you feel guilty, just honesty. he is admitting heβd like to look up from the ice during warm-ups and see a familiar face.
you look at him for a moment. at those same green eyes, that same gummy smile, that same boy who used to save a seat for you.
βiβd like that too,β you say quietly.
the smile spreading across mackβs face is so wide and radiant that he looks like a sixteen-year-old again.
βreally?β
you laugh. βreally.β
he checks his phone again. βall right, i really have to go. but iβll save a ticket for you. iβll leave it at the front office.β
you nod, and he heads toward the exit, then disappears into the cold minneapolis day.
°°°°°
back home, you realize you have no idea what to wear to the game. after all, you do not own any sharks gear. you stand in front of your closet, weighing your options.
you have a wild jersey with fleuryβs name on the backβ a real classic. you are in minnesota, after all.
then, while sorting through your clothesβ dresses, old hoodiesβ you see something tucked away in the very back corner: an old ssm hockey team hoodie. you pull it out. the fabric is faded and the cuffs are a bit wornβ it looks like itβs been sitting there forever. but you smile, mack had one just like it, they were issued to every player on the team. you wonder if he still has his.
you pull on the hoodie, and a second later, you throw a wild jersey over the top. one glance in the mirrorβ perfect. you grab your bag and head out the door.
your ticket is waiting at the box officeβ exactly as macklin said. you give the attendant your name, and she hands you an envelope. after thanking her, you step aside and open it. your eyes widen in amazement when you see the seat assignment. front row.
you laugh in shock. βno way.β
you immediately pull out your phone, intending to text mack, but then you remember heβs getting ready for an nhl game and surely has more important things to do. so, you just shake your head.
βtotal nonsense,β you mutter, heading toward your seat.
you sit down, and suddenly a wave of mild nervousness washes over you. itβs not because of the gameβ though you do hope the sharks win, despite the wild logo on your chestβ but because he might spot you here. still, that's silly, heβd almost certainly be nothing but excited.
the arena around you gradually fills with people, the music grows louder, and the teams take the ice for warm-ups. your eyes immediately find mack. you recognize his skating style even from a distance. heβs holding his stick, skating laps with that effortless stride youβve seen before. you watch him for just a few seconds when suddenly he glances your way. it lasts only a moment before he skates onβ but then he whips his head back around, as if he canβt believe his eyes.
you laugh at the priceless look on his face. his eyebrows shoot up, and a wide grin spreads across his features.
you smile, wave, and mouth the word, βhi!β
he laughs and heads toward the glass separating him from you. then his gaze falls on your jersey, and he looks at you with mock disappointment. but when you lift the jersey to reveal the shattuck hoodie underneath, his expression changes again. now heβs smiling differently, more softly.
you let go of the wild jersey, and it drops back into place. mack shoots you another wounded look.
he leans closer to the glass, practically shouting to be heard over the crowd noise and music. βi need to get you one of my jerseys. i think youβd look a lot better in one.β
you feel heat rush to your face, but before you can reply, a teammate shoves mack on the shoulder, pulling him away for practice. but as he skates off, mack glances back at you, still smiling.
by the time warm-ups are winding down, youβre smiling so wide your cheeks actually ache. you arenβt thinking at all about what youβve gone through beforeβ only about the game, only about watching mack. and the rink no longer feels like a place where you lost something. youβre enjoying yourself again.
warm-ups end, and mack skates past your section one last time. he gives the glass a light tap with the blade of his stick right in front of you. you smile back at him.
βi do like the hoodie.β he shouts.
you smile and nod in agreement. then he heads into the tunnel with his team, and you remain looking out at the open ice, waiting for the game to start.
°°°°°
after the game ends in a sharks victory, you follow the arena staffβs directions and head toward the area reserved for playersβ friends and family. you walk down the tunnel, still buzzing with the intense energy of the game.
stepping into the room, you nearly freeze in your tracks. itβs packed with nhl players. wild players youβve watched on tv since childhood, spurgeon, kaprizov andβ holy fuckingβ fleury. for a moment, youβre stunned, but then you remember why youβre here. for mack.
you look around, but he is not here yet, so you wait. you try your best not to stare at the players around you. you donβt do a very good job of it, but who could blame you?
the door opens again, and suddenly you donβt care who else is in the roomβ because mack is walking in. his hair is still damp from the shower, and his face is flushed. he scans the room and spots you. ignoring everyone else, he heads straight for you. you smile as he stops right in front of you.
βiβm so glad you came,β he breathes, hugging you.
you smile, a bit mischievously, and reply, βthatβs what she said.β
mackβs arms let go of you. he pulls back with a completely deadpan expression, his mouth hanging slightly open.
βoh my god! i canβt believe you. are you twelve?β he asks, trying not to laugh.
you burst into laughter, nearly doubling over.
βi made my way over here, i was so kindβ¦ and this is how you treat me?β
βmack, i know, i know. but you walked right into it and i couldnβt resist.β
he shakes his head, laughing. βi canβt believe you.β
βyou should have known better.β
βwell, i didnβt think youβd say that!β
βitβs your fault, macklin.β
he laughs again, but then the mocking note vanishes, and his expression softens, turning warm. βbut seriouslyβ¦ iβm glad youβre here.β
βi know. me too.β
his gaze warms, but before he can say anything else, someone calls out to him.
βmack? where the hellβ¦β
you both turn to see will scanning the room. his eyes land on mack, shift to you, then back to mackβ and a slow smirk spreads across the blondβs face. he walks over.
βoh.β
mack groans. βdonβt.β
βi didnβt say anything,β will says, feigning offense.
βyou were about to.β
βno. i was just looking,β will smiles. βanyway, the bus leaves in twenty minutes.β
mack nods. βi know.β
will shifts his gaze from you to mack again. and then, because he seems unable to help himselfβ¦
βso, this is the famous girl from tiktok.β
you laugh, while mack looks embarrassed.
βwill,β mack groans.
βby the way, i showed him that tiktok. iβm the reason weβre here.β will says proudly.
βthatβs debatable,β mack counters.
βi reunited the two of you,β will says, ignoring mack.
βyou made fun of me for a whole week.β
βboth things can be true at the same time.β
you laugh again, giving mack a gentle pat on the shoulder. finally, will turns to you.
βitβs really nice to finally meet you.β
βyou too. mack has told me a lot about you. mostly about your hotel antics.β you say, with a mischievous smile.
will laughs, then looks back at mack. βalright, we really have to go.β
mack nods. βgive me a second.β
he turns to you as will steps aside. his expression has turned a little more serious now.
βsoβ¦ i wanted to give you something. come with me.β
you follow him down the hallway to the visitorsβ locker room, trying to move quickly since time is short. mack peeks inside first to make sure no one is there, then swings the door open. you follow him in. he walks over to his locker, rummages through his bag, and pulls out a teal jersey.
you look at the name printed on the backβ his name.
βmackβ¦β
he holds the jersey out to you, offering it gently. βitβs for you. i told you we needed to get you out of that wild one.β
you take it carefully. βis this the one you played in tonight?β you ask.
βno. definitely not a game-worn one. itβs clean,β he says with a laugh.
you laugh, despite the sudden tightness in your chest. βthank god. because i wouldnβt take your sweaty jersey.β
βfair enough.β he laughs.
you unfold it and look at his name. proof that he made it. he made it beyond shattuck, made it to the pros. your eyes begin to sting, and you canβt tell if itβs because of the touching nature of the gesture or because of what youβve lost. maybe itβs a bit of both. you quickly look down, and macklin notices.
βhey.β
you shake your head. βiβm fine.β
he doesnβt believe youβ you know that. he tilts his head cautiously, trying to catch your eye.
βyou knowβ¦ i always thought that one day iβd get one with your name on it.β
you look up at him, your eyes still brimming with tears. βi missed you so much.β the words escape your lips before you can hold them back. mack freezes.
now the whole day makes senseβ the way everything just fell into place so easily. you hadnβt just missed an old school friend; you had missed mack. you missed that friendshipβ missed the person who knew you from before everything changed.
mackβs expression softens. βi missed you, too. i saw that tiktokβ and suddenly, i wasβ¦β he trails off, chuckling softly. βi donβt know. it all just came flooding back.β
you smile through your tears. βme too.β
mack takes a step closer and hugs you again. you immediately hug him back, no longer caring that youβre crying. you missed him. fuck, you really missed him. and only after losing him did you realize what a huge part of your life he occupied.
the locker room door opens.
βmack!β will says loudly.
you pull away from macklin. will points to the analog clock on the wall.
βweβve got to go.β
mack nods. βalright.β
βno, right now.β
βi know.β
βthe bus is leaving soon, and if you miss it, youβll have to walk back to the hotel.β
βgot it.β mack laughs.
will starts backing away. βtwo minutes.β
mack looks at you again. βiβm not going to lose you again.β
you just look at him.
βi mean it,β he adds. his green eyes are steady. βi wonβt let you disappear from my life again.
βmackβ¦β your breath catches in your throat.
βi donβt think iβll get this lucky twice.β
a shout immediately rings out from the hallway, βthat wasnβt luck!β
mack closes his eyes and sighs heavily. you laugh as will sticks his head back into the room.
βit was all thanks to my doomscrolling on tiktok.β
mack turns toward him. βwill.β
βjust saying.β
βwill, get out of here.β
βi reunited you two. youβre welcome.β and will immediately ducks back out the door.
mack laughs and shakes his head.
βheβll never let you forget that.β you laugh.
βyeah.β
βbut heβs right, in a way, you owe it to him.β you smile.
βmaybe.β mack sighs. βbut i still take credit for texting you.
you laugh again. βfair enough.β
macklin pulls you into a final embraceβ tighter than before.
βiβll text when i get to the hotel,β he says.
βokay.β
βand you better text me too.β
βi will.β
βpromise?β
you nod. βi promise.β
he smiles and finally lets you go. you walk out of the building with him and watch as he boards the bus. as you gaze after him, a pang of emotion strikes you at the thought that you might have lived out the rest of your life without getting this backβ without getting him back.
and judging by the way he keeps glancing back at you as he climbs onto the bus, and settling into his window seat, he realizes it too.

BONUS:
will smith is the first of his teammates to stumble upon the tiktok video. heβs sitting in the locker room after the morning skate, fresh out of the shower, waiting for macklin. mack takes forever to shower, so will has nothing to do but scroll through his feed. and scroll and scroll. then he comes across a video captioned: βMACKLIN CELEBRINI??β naturally, will stops to watch.
the video already has a couple of hundred thousand views and thousands of comments. half of them say things like:
βshe knows macklin????β
βGIRL EXPLAINNNNβ
βi need all the detailsβ
will immediately closes the comments and watches the video. the interviewer asks, βwhoβs the most famous person in your contacts?β will expects to see the question put to some influencer, or, say, an obscure musician. but then the camera pans to youβ a girl he has never seen before and whom mack has certainly never mentioned. and you answer casually:
βoh! macklin celebrini, i guess. unless he has changed his number since high school.β
will stops leaning against the wall of his stall and straightens up. the video plays on. you talk about hockey, parties, tournaments, and bus rides. at first, will is convinced youβre lyingβ maybe just trying to grab your fifteen minutes of fame. after all, why wouldnβt mack have ever mentioned some girl from high school who had his number? fortunately, the answer to all of willβs questions emerges from the showers at just the right moment.
macklin walks over to his spot on the benchβ heβs still soaking wet. will wants to get annoyed, since mack is going to drip water all over his shit, but there are more important things at hand. will shoves his phone right in mackβs face, the video keeps playing on loop.
βdo you know this girl?β
macklin blinks in surprise. βwhat girl?β
βwatch the video!β
mack leans forward as the interviewer talks about the opening. then the camera cuts to you. the dark-haired man squints at the screen, furrowing his brows. then he raises them in surprise when you say, βmacklin celebrini, i guess.β
mackβs eyes go wide. βwhat the fuck?β
will smirks. βTHATβS WHAT I SAID.β
as you tell the story, mackβs eyes are glued to the screen. a story about hockey. about the time mack tried to convince everyone that anteaters were made up. mack bursts out laughing.
βoh, my god.β he manages to say through the laughter.
βyou actually did that?β will asks, incredulously.
βyeah.β
βwhy?β
βi donβt know. just for a laugh? we were fifteen.β
will just stares at him, wide-eyed. βthat is so weird, man.β
mack, however, barely hears that, as he is once again staring at the phone will is still holding in front of him. will watches as he recalls every story youβve told, watching his expression shift into something unnervingly tender.
finally, will gives mack a light nudge on the shoulder and puts the phone away. βwell?β
mack looks at him. βwell, what?β
βdo you really know her?β
βyeah.β the answer comes instantly.
