Let me go at last to Hugette, I say, the Algerian student with her huge eyes who timidly invited me to her room when I was too young and bewildered that first year in Paris.

Waiting To Be Found
A poignant poem by Michael Boiano
So many waiting to be found: the dead buried in unlikely places, shallow graves, in unhallowed ground; the living interred in pointless lives, unknown, unsought, unmissed; bored husbands and wives hoping to be found by others who might love them more, for a time; the religious waiting to be found by God and rewarded for their faith; gurus of one sort or another, waiting to be found by devotees; the destitute waiting to be found by the rich who, in turn, are afraid of being found by the poor; the lonely waiting to be found by soul mates who never come; children waiting to be found by parental approval. Waiting on street corners, waiting in our homes, waiting on-line behind avatars, waiting in office cubicles, waiting at café tables hoping for someone to comment on the book we’re reading, waiting to be noticed, waiting to be selected, waiting to be identified as unique in a world of sameness and cliché, waiting while pretending not to be waiting, waiting to live and waiting to die, at some point, either will do, waiting for an explanation in the face of silence, waiting for transcendence that is elusive, waiting for answers that simply don’t exist. waiting for courage, waiting for rescue. Waiting like shells on the beach, some chosen, most passed by. Waiting for a reason to hope, but settling for a shopping spree. And everything we do or say or even wear, is done in anticipation of being found: the living and the dead, the idle and the busy, the melancholy and the cheerful, So many waiting, never found.

Dont blame yourself for not having known a lesson only time could teach
This photograph, taken in 1948, shows a man in a suit and tie, weeping in front of a news camera.
His name was George Gillette.
Those tears were not tears of fear.
Those were tears shed out of helplessness, and the inability to do anything about it.
He was the leader of the Mandan, Arikala, and Hidatsa tribes, and that day he was being forced to sign an agreement with the U.S. government, to hand over his ancestral lands.
The purpose was to build a dam on the Missouri River.
That signature meant that over 600 square kilometers of land, homes, schools, churches, fertile fields—would all be permanently submerged underwater.
Gillette understood.
"What I'm selling isn't just land,
it's the very memory of my people."
But he had no choice.
If he had refused to sign, the tribe wouldn't have received any compensation whatsoever.
His tear-stained face remains one of the most powerful records, symbolizing the wounded dignity experienced by Native Americans.

In 1940, George Gillette stood before a crowd during the forced sale of tribal land tied to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation in North Dakota. As 155,000 acres were taken to build the Garrison Dam, witnesses remember Gillette breaking down in tears. The land carried generations of history, culture, and livelihood for Native families whose roots stretched deep into the soil.
The dam, built for flood control and hydroelectric power along the Missouri River, forced more than 900 Native families from their homes. Sacred areas, fertile farmland, and burial grounds were submerged beneath the reservoir waters. For many tribal members, the loss reached far beyond property—it meant the disruption of traditions, community life, and the connection to ancestral homelands that had sustained their people for generations.
Though often praised for its engineering and infrastructure benefits, the project remains a painful chapter for Indigenous communities.
George Gillette’s tears came to symbolize the grief and injustice felt by many Native nations whose lands were taken.
History continues to remind people to listen to Indigenous voices and to honor the history tied to the land.
