the sophistication pervading you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love (2026) has cemented my affection and my respect for olivia rodrigo's artistry. since i picked up her music back in 2024, i've found her clever & talented, but my enthusiasm was always tempered by the fact that i was not out-of-my-mind ravenous for either guts (2023) or especially sour (2021).
i'm ravenous for you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love (2026).
truthfully, "stranger" from guts (spilled) deserves a lot of credit for opening the door to olivia's actualized artistic voice. listening to it the first time, i felt so instantly and irrationally proud of her as young woman AND as an artist. the track reflects so interestingly on sour (2021), that listening to the album becomes a different experience altogether. and olivia deftly capturing the joyfulness and the sorrow of that self-actualization carries over to her third album so naturally.
the narrative is tight, all the parts complementing each other. the motifs of that which is good is sickening ("drop dead", "maggots for brains", "what's wrong with me") inverting into that which is painful is good for me ("the cure", "begged", "cigarette smoke") ultimately resolving in the singer reclaiming herself. the fucking bops ("drop dead", "maggots for brains", "u + me = <3", "expectations")!! it being the first album she's released that doesn't drag despite being about 15 minutes longer than either of her previous releases.
top-shelf record. i'm so excited to see what artistic ground she'll cover next.
