i happened to stumble upon your posts about aii a few months ago and i was wondering how you currently feel about patty walters? i've been having a lot of conflicting thoughts and feelings about the entire thing and can only hope he's matured/realized his wrongdoings (which seems to be the case since him and dottie got married after being together after so many years (not including the brief break-up), and the fact that 'the haunting' is a song that exists). but still, it's hard to listen to the band's music now.
I have a lot of feelings and I don't know if I know how to describe them. Every time I look too much into a band (because I like them!), I find something awful, and I've pretty much just stopped listening to music at this point.
Dottie's nearly 30 now and she willingly married him, so I'm not going to presume she needs random people on the internet to save her from her husband, but I never stopped being angry/upset about what he did. Speaking of their breakup, I don't know if it means anything that it happened when Dottie was around 22 (the age Patty was soon after they started dating), but that's pure speculation on my part.
The cynical part of me wonders how much of the progressive nice boy persona he has is just a persona. He talked about consent, respecting women, etc. etc. back then, but clearly didn't follow through with how he treated Dottie, or even think to hide it. He does make himself seem more palatable when he wants to. You can see the mask for the public slip a little when you contrast how he talks about being vegan in interviews with him mentioning eating meat in his mini rant about The Happening in The Worst Movies Ever (Probably). Maybe I missed it, but I also didn't see him say anything about ICE literally killing people in the streets in the city he originally grew up in...
The charity is nice though.
The less cynical part of me wants to believe he's actually grown as a person. Dottie still likes him. Ben still likes him. He sang The Haunting (though Ben wrote the lyrics). I'd hope he's gotten better and that he's actually nice to Dottie now. It is unfortunately extremely common to turn a blind eye when someone you otherwise like does something bad, so I don't know.
Being a random spectator on the internet is weird. I can see a lot of the cracks in the facade from the many years he's been a public figure, but I don't know whether they actually mean anything anymore. I somehow both know entirely too much about him and also very little. I'm not 100% sure what to think of him.
I'm no stranger to musicians turning out awful. Back in late middle school/early high school, my favorite band was Get Scared (sans the EP with Joel), and now Johnny is a conspiracy theorist. I hoped that Architects might actually understand the issue with what Adam did until the interview with The Guardian hit me with reality. Patty's situation is different because instead it's an old thing that seems to have been forgiven by the actual person involved, and I don't really know what to do with that. I'm not actively boycotting As It Is per se, but I'm very much the type of person who stops wanting to listen to a band if I find out one of them is a massive POS.
I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now since I haven't seen anything indicating that he's still like that now. If I do, he's losing that too.
