“I love the prevalence of skulls in Catholic art - in spite of secular (and lets face it, sometimes demonically inspired attacks) that the Church hates the body. And the truth is so far in the opposite direction; Flannery O'Connor points this out, marvelling at how the resurrection of the body is a tenet of the Creed we recite, no mention is made of the soul so explicitly. And that particular aspect of the body - the fact that not only is it important here but also vitally important in eternity - is summed up with the skull; so recognizably human and recognizably dead, but filled with a pathos and peace. There’s the rest of the grave, the supernatural grace of a happy death, the sadness of separation, the promise of reunion, and the camaraderie of knowing that this is the fate of all (with a few notable exceptions). Memento mori, remember your death, but don’t fear it. It’s just a moment in time, followed by an eternity outside of time. If faced bravely and well and with trust and love, how can we fear falling into our Lover’s arms?”
