Blessed Father Michael McGivney

Patron and Founder of the Knights of Columbus
Father Michael McGivney was born in 1852 in Connecticut to Irish immigrants. He was ordained in 1877 and served the large Irish-American Community. In 1882, he started the Knights of Columbus, which provided mutual aid and fraternal support to the families who lost their breadwinner. His vision empowered the laity to serve the church and its neighbors. Today it’s one of the largest Catholic Fraternal organizations worldwide. Father McGivney died in a pandemic of pneumonia, like the coronavirus of today.

First Reading Ezekiel 9:1-7; 10:18-22 Mark a “Thau” on the foreheads of those who moan and groan over all the abominations in Jerusalem.
The LORD cried loud for me to hear: Come, you scourges of the city! With that I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate which faces the north, each with a destroying weapon in his hand. In their midst was a man dressed in linen, with a writer’s case at his waist. They entered and stood beside the bronze altar. Then he called to the man dressed in linen with the writer’s case at his waist, saying to him: Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and mark a “Thau” on the foreheads of those who moan and groan over all the abominations that are practiced within it. To the others I heard the LORD say: Pass through the city after him and strike! Do not look on them with pity nor show any mercy! Old men, youths and maidens, women and children–wipe them out! But do not touch any marked with the “Thau”; begin at my sanctuary. So they began with the men, the elders, who were in front of the temple. Defile the temple, he said to them, and fill the courts with the slain; then go out and strike in the city. Then the glory of the LORD left the threshold of the temple and rested upon the cherubim. These lifted their wings, and I saw them rise from the earth, the wheels rising along with them. They stood at the entrance of the eastern gate of the LORD’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was up above them. Then the cherubim lifted their wings, and the wheels went along with them, while up above them was the glory of the God of Israel.

First Reading Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 The woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She obtains wool and flax and makes cloth with skillful hands. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her at the city gates.

Feast Day: August 12 (New), August 21 (Trad)
Patronage: forgotten people, in-law problems, loss of parents, parents separated from children, widows
Born to the nobility, Jane was raised by her father after the death of her mother. Jane married at age 20, had 4 children and was widowed at age 28. Forced to live with her father-in-law, she spent much time in prayer and received a vision of a man who would become her spiritual director. The man was St. Francis de Sales. She became his spiritual student and close friend. In 1610 she founded the Order of the Visitation of Our Lady for widows and lay women who did not wish the full life of the orders.
