Moscow, December 2016
With Birgitta Jonsdottir and Larry Lessig. The most intense day of filming of my life is about to end. It’s -12°C and I do not want to leave. Yet someone is missing in this street. Citizen Four is no longer with us, But he will be everywhere in our film. MEETING SNOWDEN Coming soon on Arte #thisiswhatdemocracylookslike
Citizen four !
MEETING SNOWDEN - the premiere in Paris
Was it the glass of wine I had before, the air conditioning gone mad, Remi’s music that caught my heart, your gazes stolen by the shots, their words everywhere ? During the Premiere of MEETING SNOWDEN on the Max Linder huge screen, I started to shiver.
In the audience, a blend of my worlds, family, friends for life, my many partners in crime. I saw the little girl, the student, the lover, the woman, the author, the citizen, the sister, the friend, the traitor, the mother. As the sun in Moscow was rising on the screen, I tried to collect my thoughts for the little speech I was supposed to deliver at the end of the film. Some words on their words. Alone by the back of the packed cinema, I could not get my arm to obey nor my hand to hold the pen. There was no way I could control anything anymore. The film was there, on screen. So I looked again this story unfold. As I had a thousand times without me intervening really.
The end credits ran too fast, taking away the name of all those that crafted this piece of work with me. The lights came back. And then I saw your many faces, shaken, as I was after the filming, and in your eyes, a little star, a light, a thank you. I got that I was the body the idea had chosen to materialize itself, to pass along. Capturing this conversation between these three bigger-than- life characters was an adventure I can not even start to describe. My part is done. But the trip is just beginning.
THE FILM WILL AIR ON ARTE ON JUNE 15
Larry Lessig and Birgitta Jonsdottir on stage,
greeted by a standing ovation,
before a debate with the audience (with Pascale Faugère - amazing translator)
Many thanks to Julie Perris and Paul Rozenberg (my producers), Alain le Diberder, Kay Mezeberg and Marco Nassivera (Arte), who commissionned the film. In the picture below, Benedicte Jeannerod - Human Right Watch, and Cecile Coudriou - Amnesty International, two partners for the premiere, Julie Perris and Marco Nassivera (hosts for the night).
#biggerthanlife

Who Are You?
by Saṃsāran
Who are we really? Are we our thoughts? Are we our circumstances? After all, if I think I am the King of Sweden then from my perspective I am. Conversely, if I am the King of Sweden and I think I am a barista at the Starbucks in Jersey City then I am.
If I think I am healthy but I am really dying from a disease which is without obvious symptoms then I am having the same experiences as every other healthy person. If I am a hypochondriac convinced that I am dying but in fact perfectly well then subjectively I am dying.
This raises the question is there an “objective reality” which remains the same regardless of human subjective experience? That is a true reality as opposed to a perceived reality. Of course, common sense says yes. This question is up for debate. Everything changes every nanosecond.
The Grand Canyon seems like a permanent fixture yet it changes just as much as the river which formed it. How can something be real if it is never the same from one instant to the other? It is as the sage said we never step into the same river twice.
Finally, if there is an independent reality then so what? What use is this knowledge to us? The main use I suppose is that the closer our subjective reality is to this objective reality then the better we can navigate the external world. If a blind person cannot see the living room couch that doesn’t mean the couch does not exist. It is there.
Now, what of the things we cannot perceive with our senses? They also exist. Yet everything which exists to us exists only within our brain. We take in sense impressions, process them and then build an image of this outer reality within our brain and use this to navigate the external world and we convince ourselves that this mental image is in fact reality when at best it is a flickering shadow.
Who are you?
