we were ROBBED of a steve and max reunion
Steve and Robin Reunion
Robin couldnāt stop pacing. Her face hurt; she knew after all this, if they survived, sheād need to see a dentist. She wondered what sheād tell them. Why her jaw hurt. Why she couldnāt stop clenching. Why her lip was picked raw. She wondered if sheād even be able to pay for it. If they could fix her loosening back tooth for free with whatever government hush money they got this time. Whatever, she thought. They had bigger fish to fry.
The radio station was cold as she paced, sunlight streaming in the window and dappling the dust settled on the counter where she and Steve often ate their lunch. Steve.
What was taking him so long to get here? She knew he and the others had been picked up from the Upside Down and were on their way but Jesus Christ, she couldnāt shake the feeling that something was off. She imagined that even if he was okay that heād be tired. She was tired too.
Robin stopped pacing, if only to give the squeaky floor a rest. She wiped her sweaty hands on her pants, went to wash them in the bathroom. She didnāt look at herself in the mirror. Sheād stayed behind to āspruce the place upā for the landing party but she was beginning to regret it. The suspense was killing her.
Theyād all taken too many hits these last few days. There had been too many close calls. Vickie was in on it, finallyā¦which Robin didnāt know how to feel about. Sheād sent Vickie back to work and to watch out for the Wheelers. Maybe that was a mistake too. She felt like these days she was making more mistakes than ever.
The ripped Velvet Underground poster she had to keep taping to the wall outside the Squawk bathroom slinked down the wall again when she opened the door. With a huff, she bent down to fetch it. She wanted to Run Run Run too. Run somewhere far away.
Crouching down was when she heard it - the tell-tale sound of the van pulling up the drive. The beat-up thing always sounded rusty and she knew it was packed with her friends and she could feel her heart speed up. By the time the tires were parked in the gravel she was outside. Heād better be there.
Andā¦there he was. Steve waved at her, wiggling his fingers, a small smile on his face - which had noticeably more dirt and blood on it than before - after he helped Max out of the van. Thank god.
When Max was with Lucas, Steve side-stepped the others to make his way to her, and - was she crying? Oh, Robin was crying. Oh.
āNice shiner,ā Steve put one hand on her shoulder, rubbing his thumb across her collarbone, and put his other hand to her cheek. It stung under the salt of her tears.
āCould say the same thing to you, Dingusā Robin hiccuped, then pursed her lips together to stop from crying harder. Before she knew it, she was being hugged, being held, Steve rocking her back and forth. Harrington lives another day, she thought. Thank god.
āCome on, letās go inside. Meeting place, yeah?ā Steve said. He motioned something to Jonathan before he grabbed her by the hand to rush inside for privacy. His hand was huge and callused and as cold as ice, flecked with weird white specks. He limped as they walked to the kitchen.
Since theyād taken over the station, theyād decided to call the old pantry their āmeeting place.ā Itās where they kept Murrayās snack deliveries but also where they had their heart to hearts, a common occurrence since the lockdown. Itās where Steve had shared his first concerns about Dustin, where Robin had admitted she was scared to take Vickie out on a date. Where the two of them had plotted Ericaās lockdown birthday party, where Steve had cried to her when he learned his parents werenāt coming back to Hawkins from Ohio. Where the two of them went now, blocking the door behind them. They slid to the floor in unison.
āI know itās rude to just jump right in but I was particularly worried this timeā¦so if you donāt mind Harrington, what the hell happened to you?ā Robin let out a shaky breath. She wiped her eyes.
Steve did too. Then he smiled. āMan, itās good to hear your voice, Robby.ā He closed his eyes, resting his head against the wall. She could see the bruise forming on his chin flicker in the light as he winced. āUm, letās seeā¦well, I thinkā¦I think Dustin and I are finally on the same page. And Wheeler and Byers, they uhā¦ā he pinched the bridge of his nose. āThey almost didnāt make it.ā
āOh my god. Steve, are you okay?ā Robin knocked his knee with hers.
āYeah, yeah. I mean, it could have been a lot worse, right? Butā¦ā he rubbed at his eyes again, pausing to clear his throat, āIām so tired, Rob. And we saw Holly and we couldnāt save her. We failed. Again. And Iām so glad Dustin and I are on the same page but my god can that nerd throw a punch.ā
āWait what!? Dustin did this?ā Robin pointed to his chin. She couldnāt believe it.
Steve actually let out a chuckle. He smiled, eyes twinkling. āYeah, he learned from the best. Ha. Kidās got a mean right hook. Heā¦weāre okay though. Honestly I think weāre better than weāve been since Eddieā¦anyway. Yeah it hurts, but I guessā¦ā he trailed off.
āWe matchā Robin interjected. She didnāt know why she said those words specifically, but they felt right. They did match, in their own way. She took his hand again. They both exhaled.
āYeah, Robby, I guess we do. And now, I mean I think itās time for plan B, right?ā Steve exhaled again. āAnd I think, weāre finally all on the same page. Me, and Dustin, but also me and Nancy, and Byers too. I mean, with what almost happened - I think weāre all ready for thisā he gestured to the whole pantry āto be over. And itās nice, you know, to finally feel like weāre a team again. Kinda felt like for a while there we were all just angry at each other.ā
āSo, so angry. Like, comically angry. Dustin was like a little rattlesnake, all coiled up.ā Robin felt so good talking to Steve. Catching up.
āNo way you just said that Rob!ā
āUm, why?ā
āUm, because did you know he put a snake in that dick jockās locker at school and thatās why he was so beat up and missed the crawl?ā
āDUSTIN put a snake in someoneās locker?ā Robin couldnāt believe it.
āHe finally told me. No way you said that! No way. Itās like youāre psychic!ā Steve said it fast, the way he did when he was going to laugh. She felt right on the edge of insanity.
āDustin Henderson, our friend who can who recite a whole Shakespearean sonnet from memory, put a snake in some dickbagās locker? I mean, iconic!ā Robin started to laugh, really laugh now. āHe learned from the best.ā
āAhhhh, yeah, he didā Steve laughed. His eyes were crazy in the slanted light of the pantry. The tiny room smelled like dust and fake cheese and blood and sweat. Musty and dangerous.
āSteve, Iām so glad you made it out okay.ā Robin couldnāt hold it in any longer. His pupils were blown and his eyes were puffy, like he had been crying. They were insane together. āI was so worried you werenāt going to make it this time. And Iā¦I almost didnāt make it this time, and I was just so mad that I was maybe never going to see you again, and I canātā¦I love you. Youāre my best friend and I love you and I want you to know that whatever happens next, Jesus, I want us to get out of here.ā She sat up, still holding his hand. She could say a million more things, but Steve cut her off.
āRobin Iām so tired of almost dying. Weāre gonna get out of here, I promise. Weāre gonna go for one last ride and get out. Okay?ā Now he was sitting up, too. āThis pain, this fear we feelā¦it wonāt be forever. It wonāt be our whole lives.ā He ran his hand through his hair, greasy and also speckled in white. Sheād bring that up later. Steve was doing his once-a-year hero speech. Just for her. āBelieve it or not, even beat up, I think we have a pretty good chance of winning this thing. For real. I think I might have an idea on what to do. Honest to god, Rob. I think I have an idea for how to fix things. And Iām so exited to hear what you did when I was gone, and itās so good to think that itās never gonna be this bad again. Okay? Okay? Now letās get some fresh air before the kids think weāre making out.ā
āEw!ā Robin let go of his hand, her jaw aching with the joy of a true smile.
āJust kidding!ā He winked. God, she was so happy he was alive to wink at her. āYeah, I get it. With a capital P. Now come on, letās go ask Dustin what kind of snake it was.ā Steve stood up, dusted off his pants. He helped Robin up with a steady hand.
āYou gonna be okay?ā Robin asked. She was also asking herself.
Steve looked at her, really looked at her, for a full moment. She always beat him at staring contests but this seemed like a turning point for him. Steve had come back from the Upside Down more confident, it seemed. More self-assured. Like he had an inkling that he was maybe going to live this time. Maybe whatever plan he had would work. For some reason she felt like, in his presence just now, it would.
Watching his eyes scan her as he waited to reply felt like an eternity. Then he smiled again, somehow his bruises framing his face like a blush, and said āyeah. Yeah weāre all gonna be okay.ā
They left the closet to join the others, a box of Cheez-Its in hand. Reunited.
can i PLEASE get a stobin scene. can i please see them have ONE conversation with each other Please not just talking about each otherā¦..

Why didnāt we get an emotional reunion between Steve and Robin when Steve made it out of the Upside Down? They havenāt seen each other in like two days. They both have fresh wounds. Theyād have so much to catch up on. That should have been a moment where we got a good āwhat you missedā dialogue in their secret space in the radio station. They should have been downing Cheez-Its and Gatorade and crying about their last plan to save the worldā¦.why do I have to do everything myself
Stranger Things being about āthe power of gay loveā overcoming the love of powerā¦.well yeah. But also why was so much of this season boring as fuck. Sorry but I do not give a shit about these random ass kids. I donāt give a fuck about Dr. Kay. I get āsuspending oneās disbeliefā but itās hard to be invested in side plots and characters when itās the last season and there could be something better on my screen!!! Every time Steve and Dustin were together it was electric and I cared. Every time Lucas and Max were on screen I sat up. Episode 7 was my favorite because it finally felt like we got to see glimpses of season 1 and 2, but why should I care about the military plot again? And now we have one episode to wrap it all up, using gay love and sacrifice? Could have been an email!
I lowkey believe that if theyād added a tiny 15 minutes of exposition to episode 4 it could have been the first episode of the season and totally would have made sense. Thatās how little so much of the season has mattered. They could have done 4-7 as 1-4 and then given us 4 more episodes of angst and growth⦠there could have been a better second cliff hanger for the party⦠an entire episode for the epilogueā¦whatever.
My largest critique of Stranger Things has always been that they TELL when they should be SHOWING. Theyāre obsessed with time skips but instead of showing what happened in tiny moments, thereās 30 minutes of voice over exposition explaining - which is a boring, trite, and rushed way to establish stakes.
If episode 1 of season 5, āThe Crawlā had been a montage episode where we saw every single crawl play out since season 4ās cliffhanger, where each character was trying so hard to protect the town that they lost themselves, and the repetition and quarantine were shown to shrink their spirits, where we saw Elās hair grow longer from beat to beat, we saw them taking over the radio station, and we saw character dynamics at play - Dustin getting meaner to Steve every month for example - the sheer exhaustion from crawling would not only have us out of breath and invested in whether or not the next one would work, but weād be praying something changes and the main plot would be earned.
Instead, they gave us voice over exposition, and the one crawl we did see just so happened to change everything. We didnāt have enough time to establish their routines, emotions, and stakes before the plot kicked in! Classic Duffers. I knew it would happen because they literally said in interviews that there was āno time to establishā anything but thatās just not true. They chose the cheap route and so it feels cheap. Now all the episodes are somehow long AND fillerā¦and part 2 is going to be so action packed that weāre going to have whiplash.
For a final season we waited so long for, the pacing is horrible. At least my boy Steve is here š
I have seen a lot of complaints and general discussions from both Steve fans and the general audience so far (in under 24 hours! Okay peopleās prince!) about Steveās characterization in ST5 Part 1, and to that I say:
1. I think a TON of people confuse fanfic Steve with real Steve. Steve in fanfic is often softer and sweeter than he really is. He can be a lover boy, but in all five seasons we have seen him have two real personality quirks: protective himbo, and snarky bitch. From ānow, dickheads!ā in the season 2 junkyard scene to āwhereād you learn that, camp know nothing?ā in the season 3 mall stakeout to āwipe your feet!ā in season four, Steve has been shown to be an eye-rolling diva with an attitude. Heās snippy and quippy! And I love that. He is the one always asking āwait, what!?ā because heās the conduit for the audience to really understand the intricacies of the plot, while looking hot! Yay. So it did not feel out of character to me when he was short with people this season or asking ādumbā questions - it felt like he was reacting honestly.
2. His anger at Dustin also felt earnest to me. When Dustin is beat up, Steve is mad, not at Dustin for getting beat up, but because heās obviously lying about what happened and you can easily infer this type of dishonesty has been happening a lot before the season picks up. Steve isnāt ābeing mean out of nowhereā to Dustin. He and Dustin are struggling to communicate because Dustin is mourning and spiraling and Steve doesnāt know how to help him. This is OBVIOUSLY going to be the entire reason they are in the upside down together and this will be resolved in part 2. Dustin is mean to Steve about his intelligence and Steve is frustrated at Dustinās lack of self control and those being addressed will be part of how they make up in the end.
3. Whether or not Steve lives, his arc is about moving on from Nancy (unless the Duffers reunite Stancy? In which case woah, but I highly doubt it, since it would be super rushed) in a new way - moving on from romance entirely and accepting his brotherly role. While some fans may say that already happened in season 2, itās never actually been overtly, textually addressed that Steve is āmoving onā WITHOUT SOMEONE ELSE IN MIND. People bring up the truth serum convo from season 3, but he only thought he was moving on because he was into Robin. Robin came out, and he went right back to his old pattern. This season will be the formal closing of the loop! The love triangle isnāt a rehashing, itās a continuation of the unfinished business he has with Nancy and Jonathan. I get that some people think itās a waste of time, especially in the final season, but I thought it felt more like them laying the path for deeper convos later. I hope that Steve and Jonathan get to be friends. Them ending part 1 stuck together means truth must come to light, and I bet weāll get some good tidbits at least. And if not, fanfic baby!
4. TBH maybe this renders my other points moot but heās honestly just not the main character and is def not as much as a main as he was in season 4, so heās just not in the show as much, which means his arc has to move faster and the pacing of his growth will probably feel off outside the context of the larger movie-length episodes. If you only watch for Steve, it will probably feel like heās just a sexy mean guy who hates Dustin now. But inside the show, for the intended general audience, you can tell heās used as comedic relief, plot explanation, and dramatic emphasis. Feels like thatās less of a characterization problem and more of a show problem. I personally donāt care about Holly or Derek at all and wish those moments were Steve moments, alasā¦
5. I just flat out do not care about the other plot lines in ST5 and the season kinda sucks to me (who could have guessed) yet I actually do love the Steve plot so far! So I had to write this down for multiple reasons. Steve is such a good character and if they waste his potential in part 2 Iāll be disappointed and then move on from this show like everyone else, lol. But with my headcanons in tow.
I feel like all the season 5 leaks are coming from byler accounts who hate Steve and are giving bad faith interpretations of his character. That being said of course the Duffers are regressing Steve. Not because itās bad writing but because itās 1) a red herring before Steveās main arc with Dustin and 2) not all progress is linear? Sometimes you are a nuanced young man who is already kind of a bitch who is hung up on a girl. That doesnāt make you a creepy person it makes you a sad guy with a lot left to learn. I think he and Jonathan will become friendlier as the episodes go by and then his real arc will solidify in part 2. Also that being saidā¦they might just ruin his character and if that happens, lol, never mind, Steve you belong to the people
