DEAR CATASTOPHE WAITRESS...

Today has been a very sad but beautiful day, pre warning.. this gets soppy. On 12 July 1993, exactly 20 years ago, and at 22, Dan Eldon, an English photojournalist, artist and activist was stoned to death with three colleagues by Somali Mobs. He seems an amazing person, working with others his whole life and completing a series of journals I fell in love with about a year ago. Just this week my friend Hannah messaged me asking if I knew about his work and we both gushed over him together until we found out his anniversary was today. We made lots of different double sided information cards (approx. 180.. the printer went a bit ott, only 2 and 1 back pictured above), bunting, banners, framed photos, lit candles and arranged a tiny shrine in a tiny corner (pictured in image where people are walking by). We then floated boats down the river with his message “journey is the destination” along the side. It was really lovely to do it and remember him, as well as watch people go past and stop and think about him. Through his journals you really feel like you know him and I’ll never forget the sinking feeling of flicking through his book in the graphics room for the first time and thinking “wow look at all this work”, then turning to the back and reading the sad story of his death. His life cut short. His journal book ‘Journey Is The Destination’ inspires me so much, and so does Dan.
