Till The Very End - Destiel AU
So I got an anonymous request a long long long while back to write some kid!Dean and kid!Cas AU and I kinda got carried away and this happened. I hope you like it!! Also this is my first piece after my long hiatus so any feedback is appreciated â¤ď¸
Thank you so much for being patient with me!
âWhy are your clothes so torn?ââ¨
âTheyâre so big on you. Donât you have better clothes?â
âYouâre so ugly. Look how nice my clothes are!â
Three year old Dean Winchester sniffled, trying to hold back tears, as the other kids from his daycare taunted him. They were all laughing at his oversized flannel and his ripped shoes. Suddenly, a big kid pushed him so hard that he fell back and hit his head on the ground and thatâs when the tears started to flow and Dean started sobbing. The other kids just laughed until a voice cried out,
âHey get away from him!â
A small boy stood between Dean and the other kids and he spoke with such a fervour that the other kids slowly left the area after casting Dean a few taunting looks.
The boy turned to Dean and spoke up in a shy voice, âHey donât cry. I can share my toys with you.â
Dean hesitated but the small, blue-eyed kid came and sat on the ground next to him and gently pushed a firetruck onto Deanâs hands. Dean smiled a little and wiped the tears from his face.
âMy name is Castiel.â The blue-eyed kid offered him his hand. âCastiel Novak.â
Despite having stood up to a large number of kids, Castiel looked shy and timid as he smiled at Dean.
Deanâs smile grew wider as he shook Castielâs hand. âIâm Dean Winchester!â
The two kids - one blue-eyed and shy and the other  green-eyed and goofy - spent the whole day playing with each other and sharing stories about their family. When it was time to go home, the two boys hugged each other tight.
Dean stuck out his pinky. âCas I promise that weâll be best friends forever.â
âYes we will!â Cas exclaimed as he hooked Deanâs pinky finger with his own. âTill the very end.â
âDaddy! I met a beautiful boy today! We played together and heâs really fun.â Three year old Castiel Novak gushed about his day at preschool to his father, Chuck.
âThatâs really nice Cas.â
Castielâs face instantly fell when he realised that his father wasnât paying attention to him and that he had zoned out again.
âTell me about him Cassie! Whatâs this boyâs name?â His elder brother Gabriel tackled him from behind and tickled Cas till he was out of breath.
âStop Gabe.â Castiel got his words out in between his giggles. âHow can I talk when you keep tickling me?â
Gabriel was six years old but he was mature for his age - the result of having an absentminded father.
âHis name is Dean Winchester,â said Cas as a slight blush crept up his cheeks. âOther kids were telling bad things to him and he was sad so I went and shared my toys with him.â
Gabrielâs heart warmed for this kid he hardly knew. He couldnât bear to think about Castiel being bullied.
âHe has a younger brother whoâs a baby called Sammy and Dean really loves his Sammy.â Castiel was still talking. âHis mommy went to heaven just like ours but his dad doesnât work much so he doesnât have a lot of money.âÂ
Castielâs face grew sad and Gabriel was unsure on how to comfort him but Castiel was talking again,
âHe asked me if I wanted to come to his house one day and play with Sammy. Can I go Gabe? Please?â
Castielâs big earnest eyes which were directed at Gabriel broke the latterâs heart. He knew that he wouldnât be able to take Cas all the way over to someone elseâs house and he also knew that their dad wouldnât drive them anywhere. But he could never bring himself to say no to Castiel.
âSure Cassie! I have lots of homework today but weâll definitely go to his house one day.â
Castiel let out a yelp of joy and sprang into Gabrielâs arms and hugged his older brother tight and whispered, âYouâre the best Gabe.â
Gabriel hugged Cas back but he was heartbroken. He knew that Castiel will not be going to Dean Winchesterâs house any time soon.
âDean! Youâve got paint all over your face!â Castiel giggled at the sight of Dean Winchester covered in pink paint.
Dean leaned over and smudged the paint on Castielâs face. âBoop! Youâve got a pink nose.â
Both the boys soon doubled over in laughter but a sudden reprimand from their third grade teacher, Ms. Ellen, caused them to control their giggles.
âSammy really wants to meet you, Cas,â Dean whispered under his breath.
âI really do want to come to your house Dean but my dadâs very busy and my brother keeps telling me that he has homework.â Castiel lips turned down in sadness as he hoped that Dean would not be mad at him.
âIâll never be mad at you Cas!â It was like Dean had read his mind. âEven I donât have anyone to drive me to your house. But weâll definitely meet up one day.â
Dean smiled brightly at Cas and Cas couldnât help but notice how cute the freckles at the bridge of his nose were. Castiel smiled back offered Dean his pinky.
âDean, I pinky promise that Iâll come to your house one day.â
Dean hooked his pinky to Casâ. âIâll be waiting Cas.â
Cas and Dean went to the same high school. It was only in their Freshman year that Cas got an opportunity to go to Deanâs house. Gabriel was old enough to drive Castiel to Deanâs house and the latter spent the whole time in a frenzied happiness. Gabriel smiled at the excited Castiel through his dashboard mirror.
Dean opened the door seconds after Cas had knocked on it. Both boys hugged each other and let out a happy laugh. Dean hugged Gabriel too and thanked him for driving Cas to his house.
âIâve heard a lot about you Dean. Youâre a really good kid.â Gabriel told an excited Dean as Cas turned a deep red.
âThanks Gabriel! Youâre an amazing older brother. Cas loves you.â Dean grinned up at the older Novak.Â
Gabrielâs heart warmed as he hugged Cas goodbye and told him that heâll pick him up the next day.
âBye Gabriel!â Both the boys waved at him from the front porch till he pulled the car out of the driveway.
As soon as Gabrielâs car was out of sight, Dean gently tugged Cas towards his house. âCome on Cas! I want you to meet Sammy.â
Sam Winchester was as excited to meet Castiel as Cas was to meet him.
âDean doesnât stop talking about you! He thinks youâre really funny and cute and smart!â Sam gushed out as he hugged Castiel.
âSammy!â Dean protested as he playfully punched Sam and ruffled his hair.
âI think your brother is equally funny and cute and smart, Sam,â said Cas with an amused look on his face. âHeâs my best friend.â
Sam and Deanâs dad was nowhere to be found but the boys convinced Sam that he disappears sometimes and that itâs nothing to worry about.
âCan we watch Star Wars, Dean?â Sam begged his older brother. âPlease?â
âSure Sammy,â Dean said as he looked at his younger brother with adoration.
Sam let out a whoop of joy and rushed off to make some popcorn.
âDean, Ms. Ruby wanted me to talk to you about your grades.â Cas broached the subject slowly. âI can help you study.â
Deanâs grades were falling pretty badly and Dean didnât know how to explain to Cas that it was because of his father abusing him at home and never being there to help him or Sam with anything. He decided that heâll tell Cas when the time comes but for now they should enjoy the day.
âDonât worry about it Cas. Iâll take care of it.â
âOkay.â Cas realised that there was something that Dean wasnât telling him but he decided not to poke at it. Dean would tell him when he was ready.
Sam was the first to fall asleep on the couch and Dean and Cas were up through the entire movie. They soon started talking about school and about how they were going to be sophomores soon.
âWe might even have girlfriends next year Cas!â Dean exclaimed with a huge grin.
Cas smiled back but for some reason he found that his smile was forced. Why did the thought of Dean Winchester with a girlfriend upset him?Â
The answer came to him just before he fell asleep, wrapped in Deanâs arms. He was in love with his best friend.
Itâs funny how much can change in a little two years, isnât it? Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak were seniors at Wayward High but they were no longer best friends. In fact, it had been more than a year since the two had spoken to each other. Castiel was an all-rounder. He had perfect grades and he was also the captain of the basketball team. Heâd already gotten many offers to join various colleges. Moreover his father had started allocating time for his family and started working harder to support his boys.
On the other hand, Dean Winchesterâs grades just dropped lower. He was an outcast in school - with his tattered flannel and worn out shoes. But while Castiel had never dated anyone, Dean had been in a lot of relationships - all of which had ended badly. Sam Winchester and Gabriel Novak never understood why their respective brothers had grown apart at a time when they needed each other the most.
It all had started a few days after their sleepover two years ago. Deanâs father, John, had started beating him up more and more. He would come home drunk and demand dinner from Dean. Dean was scared to report it to the authorities as he knew that they would separate Sammy and him. He also couldnât bring himself to tell Cas as he didnât want any pity from the latter. Moreover Dean Winchester had known for a while that his feelings towards Cas were more than that of a friend. He was embarrassed and slowly stopped talking to Castiel.
Castiel was confused and hurt. He kept wondering if he had done something wrong. He also feared that maybe Dean got to know about Casâ feelings towards him and was upset with them. Did Castiel just ruin the best friendship in his whole life by falling in love?
Soon Dean had found other friends - Charlie Bradbury, Jo Harvelle, Garth Fitzgerald and more. Castiel, on the other hand, kept to himself and focused on his academics.
There used to be a time when they would walk down the school hallways as best friends but now, they were strangers who refused to meet each otherâs eyes. There were times Castiel would catch Dean looking at him and he wanted to go over and talk to him but he was always too scared of being rejected.
Just as their time at high school was coming to an end, Castiel made up his mind to talk to Dean. One Friday evening, he drove himself to the Winchesterâs house and with sweaty palms, knocked on the door. For a long time no one answered the door and dejected, Castiel was about to turn back and drive home. But sounds of muffled crying stopped Castiel in his tracks. He could recognise Deanâs voice anywhere. Castiel quickly pushed the handles to the front door to find it already unlocked. The soft cries where coming from Deanâs room. Cas quickly rushed up the stairs and pushed open the doors to the room to find Dean curled up on the bed, crying his eyes out.Â
âDean?â Cas slowly reached out and touched Deanâs shoulder. âDean, are you okay?â
Dean quickly sat up and wiped the tears off his face and Cas gasped when he saw that Deanâs face was caked with blood.
âIâm fine,â Dean muttered harshly.
Cas flinched away from him and Dean regretted his tone immediately. âIâm sorry Cas. Itâs just that I hate people seeing me like this. Especially you.â
Cas had no idea what that meant but he slowly sat next to Dean. âYou donât have to hide from me Dean. Remember how we first met?â
Dean smiled softly as he thought back to that day 14 years earlier. âYou were a shy kid even back then.â
Cas snorted. âYou werenât so different yourself.â
After a small pause Cas continued, âDean what happened? Who did this to you?â
âMy father.â Deanâs voice was low and he refused to meet Casâ eyes.
âYour father?â Cas was shocked. âHow long has he been abusing you like this?â
âAbout four years now⌠Heâs an alcoholic and he usually comes home drunk and beats the fuck out of me.â
âWhy didnât you tell me anything Dean?â
âI - I was embarrassed, Cas.â
Castiel took Deanâs hands in his own. âYou donât have to be embarrassed to tell me anything. Iâm your best friend.â
Dean looked up at Cas and tightened squeezed Casâ hand with his own. âYou still consider me as a friend?â
âOf course Dean. You shouldâve told me but I never realised what you were going through. Iâm sorry for not being there for you either.â
Before Cas knew what was happening Dean hugged him tight and Cas soon melted into the hug.
âThank you Cas.â
âBest friends till the very end, right?â
âOf course,â Dean grinned at his best friend.
âCome on letâs get you cleaned up.â Castiel pulled Dean up to his feet and spent the evening washing the blood off of his face.
âWe were idiots in the past two years,â Dean muttered with regret.
âYes we were. But weâre here for each other now and thatâs what matters,â Cas said with a small smile at Dean.
âYouâre such a sap Cas,â Dean grinned up at the blue eyed boy.
Cas just lightly punched Deanâs shoulder. âShut up Dean.â
Soon, for absolutely no reason, the two boys were doubled over in laughter and it occurred to each of them that they were still in love with each other. But would they ever tell the other?
Since that day Castiel invited Dean and Sam over to his house after school. Sam played with Castielâs cousin, Anna, while Cas tutored Dean. In just a couple of months, Deanâs grades improved drastically. The two boys were closer than they ever were. Moreover Dean was going to turn 18 soon and heâll be able to live alone with Sam - away from their father.Â
The night before prom, the Dean and Cas were lying stretched out on the latterâs bed playing video games.
âI mean, prom is so stupid.â Dean muttered as he waited for Cas to type in his characterâs name for the game. âItâs all a big popularity contest.â
âHmmm hmm,â Cas agreed with Dean. âPlus we donât have dates.â
âWell you donât need a date to go,â Dean looked sideways at Cas.
âThatâs true.â Cas nodded but he didnât know what else to say.
The two played a couple of games in silence - except for a couple of shouts of happiness and annoyance at the game. Finally Dean placed his controller down on the bed and turned to Cas and broke the silence,
âYou could be mine,â Dean whispered.
âYour what?â Cas looked at Dean with a confused tilt of his head.
Fuck heâs adorable, Dean thought to himself and he felt nervousness wash over him. It was too late to back out so he might as well do this.
âYou could be my date.â Dean drew out his words slowly.
Castiel just blinked at Dean and didnât say anything for a while. Dean was sure that his face was dark red and he was aware that he was sweating buckets. He had fucked up, didnât he? He had just gotten Cas back and he had already pushed him away. Casâ voice interrupted his thoughts,
âYes.â
âWhat?â Dean wasnât sure that he heard Cas right.
âIâll be your date.â At this point, Casâ face was a dark shade of pink too. âDo you like me as more than a friend, Dean?â
âYeah Cas. Iâve been in love with you for a very long time actually.â Dean let out a nervous laugh and scratched the back of his neck.
Casâ eyes grew wider and a huge grin split his cheek. âIâve actually liked you for a very long while too.â
Deanâs heartbeat are impossibly louder and he found himself smiling back giddily at Cas. âCan⌠can I kiss you Cas?â
Casâ blushed harder - if that was even possible. âSure Dean.â
Dean slowly leaned closer towards Cas till their lips were just inches apart. âYou sure about this?â
Instead of replying with words, Cas leaned forward and closed the gap between their lips. Dean couldnât help the gasp that escaped his mouth as he felt Casâ tongue at his lips. Dean quickly opened his mouth in response and Casâ tongue expertly explored Deanâs mouth. Dean wrapped an arm around Casâ waist and pulled the latter on top of him on the bed without breaking the kiss.
This was Castielâs first kiss and he realised that most books had it wrong. He didnât feel any fireworks nor supernova exploding behind his eyelids. The kiss made him happy and it was the best kind of happy. It held the right amount of messiness and Castiel was soon drunk on Dean and his love for him.
Dean slowly pulled away from Cas and the two were out of breath.
âLetâs save some for prom night shall we?â Dean winked at Cas and both were soon reduced to a laughing mess.
Once their laughter subsided, Dean looked at Cas with a soft look in his eyes. âIâve wanted to kiss you ever since I met you.â
Castiel quickly pecked Deanâs lips again and grinned at the Winchester. âWhoâs the sap now?â
Dean laughed with a slow shake of his head.Â
âI love you Castiel Novak. Youâve helped me through a lot and I donât know where I would be without you.â He paused before adding, âYouâre like my guardian angel, Cas.â
âI love you too Dean Winchester and weâll always be there for each other.â
âPinky promise?â Dean asked as he held out his pinky finger.
Castiel laughed at their old tradition before hooking Deanâs pinky with his own. âPinky promise.â
