In the beginning of the show, we learn that when Sam left for college, John told him not to come back... then in the end of season 4, Dean tells him that if he walks out the door he should never come back. Then S5E1 Bobby tells him to lose his number after they beat Lucifer... Basically Sam has been been “disowned” by every single one of his father figures in the beginning of the show. That is why he is always trying to keep the family together in later seasons, he thinks no one wants him....
