I think there is something important expressed in their dialogue from the sneak peek.
Daryl: This is gonna be fun.
As we know from their history, Daryl often tries to care for Carol by giving her a moment of amusement to ease her struggles. It seems to me like this is one of those attempts. âThis is gonna be funâ is one of those comfort cliches we use to try to convince ourselves and others that things arenât as bad as it seems. The phrase is amusing when we deploy it ironically - when, indeed, things will be anything but. Itâs a kind of âfuck youâ to doom - smiling in the face of terror.
Carol: No, itâs not.
The interesting thing, though, is that Carol doesnât take the out. She decides to keep the moment real by choosing not to take on the joke. To me, this is actually an important point about what their relationship is, especially after âNew Best Friends.â In that episode, Daryl tried to mitigate the pain for Carol by telling her everyone was ok, when they werenât. And then he immediately tried alleviate Carolâs pain further by offering his joke about needing to be a king to get some dinner. In that case, Carol accepted the out and their seriousness gave way to pleasure in each otherâs company.
In this case, however, Carol doesnât shy away from the tension. And she doesnât allow Daryl to, either. Itâs oddly reassuring. Daryl can see that she is now at a point where she is not running, side-stepping, or avoiding what she - and they all - will have to do. No, in fact, it will not be fun. And Carol is in a place again where she can do that.
Daryl: Itâs better than lettinâ it be though, right?
Daryl accepts Carolâs choice to not take the joke, and doesnât try to resolve the tension any more. But look what he does. He now turns to Carol for reassurance. Itâs subtle, but also so characteristic of how they relate. He ends up both offering and asking for comfort in the same sentence.
He asks for reassurance of at least two things: 1) reassurance that what Carol has just said is true - that she is ready to accept the burden of fighting and killing for herself and those she loves, and 2) reassurance for himself that he hasnât forced her into something she canât do. Personally, I think thereâs a third reassurance heâs seeking: that Carol approves of his choices and will support what he has to do, too.
He offers reassurance by letting Carol confirm for herself, to herself, and to him her commitment to this action. He doesnât tell her how to feel. He asks if she is still sure this is right for them. Heâs hoping sheâll say yes, of course. Heâs almost sure. But, he always, always letâs Carol make her own decisions.
Carol: Yeah. It is.
And make no mistake, he is comforted when she chooses to show her resolve. It helps him trust himself.
You know what I was thinking of..
That Carol dosenât even KNOW this happened..
(gif by @dixonscarol)
That he threatened to kill someone if an act of nature causes he death.
He comes to her door looking like someone worked him over good and she dosenât ask what happened because Daryl âcoming homeâ hurt is not an unusual occurrence. Sheâs just overwhelmed to see him she just hugs him. Lets him into her house and (possibly) patches him up before cooking dinner.
And itâs not that she dosenât care what happened its just not how it works with them it seems. Itâs like heâs a soldier coming back on some kind of leave and his girl takes him in for shelter for a brief while. A physical and emotional respite from the hell heâs been living in for ahwile now. She accepts the injuries, knowing he probably dosenât want to talk about it. And not knowing he took the latest one for her.
The thing is though, he has been through some terrible shit recently but his only concern is for her. And he listens to her tell him why she left. Sees her cry and just CANâT add to that. All he wants to do is make her feel better. Let her have the peace heâs somewhat denying himself and even just let himself have a small moment where everything seems ok, even if it isnât.
He lies to her so she can have that moment, and even though the trickle down effect is he gets a quite moment himself, itâs not why he does it.
The moment is for her. So she can believe, even for a moment, that things are alright. Because, to use a direct quote âshe means more to him than anythingâ .
And the saying goodbye, the need to hold on just a little bit longer to the moment..
(gif by @oohhshiny)
It just seals it for me cause it feels like exactly that kind of goodbye. The kind that a husband and wife have before he goes off, potentially to never come back because one bullet, or knife or bat, could end it in one moment. So you hang onto the moment of peace and love a little longer than you have to.
Now they may not be canon in the sense that people want or expect (and maybe never will be, I donât know) but this to me is. Itâs a canon moment of two people who love each other, giving eachother comfort, shelter and hope (even if itâs false) just a for a moment and that to me something incredibly special.

Headcanon where Daryl would never admit it but totally had the entire Bob Ross Joy of Painting series recorded on old VHS tapes back in the day. Â Didnât really relate to the âhappy little cloudsâ and some shit but whenever it was too cold to hunt heâd sit back and enjoy the mountains and trees appearing in half hour segments in front of him. Â Liked it when the artist would occasionally show off one of his woodland friends but really got a secret thrill from all the bravery tests.
Prompt: Daryl and Carol have their first fight... then they make up
"Why do you keep leaving?" Daryl shouted at Carol while pacing the living room of the house her found her at. She was sitting on the dusty couch trying to hold back her tears. She missed him a lot and now that he was here, she didn't know what to say. He was with her, but not in the way she wanted him to be. "I've told you before; I don't want to hurt anyone for you. I'm tired of killing for Alexandria. That's why I had to get away. The reasons never changed," she spoke with ease unlike Daryl. "Really? Really?" He stopped walking around for a second staring at her. The harshness in his eyes reminded her of when she refused to go to Sophia's funeral. The look on his face from long ago reappeared and made her feel vulnerable. "You can't get away from it. You know that. You're going to have to kill whether you like it or not," he snarled."I don't want to see them get hurt! I don't want you to get hurt! I couldn't live with myself if I knew you were dead! Sometimes ignorance is bliss, Daryl!" "Yeah, well, we're you're family and you can't lose us. You're stuck with us, dammit," Daryl threw up his hands in frustration,"You're just gonna have to live with it!"Carol said nothing as she stood up, walked past him, and went straight to her bedroom. ---Daryl knew what he had done. He doesn't know if she'll ever forgive him for being harsh to her. He sat outside of her bedroom door with his knees pressed to his chest. He was wondering what she was doing in there. Was she crying or was she packing to leave again? Before he could get another thought through his head, he stood up and opened her door slowly. She was sitting in the corner of the room in a plush chair next to the bed. She had 'Love and War' cracked open in her hands. That's what their relationship felt like now to Daryl- love and war. He just wanted to make things right. "Hey," he whispered. Carol looked up and closed the book before putting it on the nightstand next to her. "Daryl, I..." she was going to say, but was cut short by him. "Don't. I'm sorry for what I said," he said coming closer to her. "You don't have to apologize. I knew why you were frustrated," she sighed getting up from her chair. Daryl then made long strides towards her before pulling her to his chest. She didn't resist the slightest bit. Instead, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him as close as she could. He slowly breathed her in trying to savor the moment. Carol then heard a murmur emerge from his lips that were buried in her shoulder. "What?" she asked. Daryl slowly lifted his head and stared into her eyes. "I love you," he whispered with a straight face. Carol felt her heart sink before she smirked,"About damn time you confessed."
Prompt for fanfic: Carol gets killed
(Anonymous, thanks. Thanks a lot.)-Daryl's POV-She lay in my arms weak from the beatings from the Saviors. They showed no mercy when they realized we had a connection. They found us in the house she was staying in while they were on a man hunt for me. I somehow managed to escape again, but this time with Carol. I clamored down the halls with her shaking in my arms. As I turned the corner I saw a figure standing in the middle of our path with a pistol raised at us. Dwight stared me down before I heard a loud bang and a flash from the pistol's barrel. I wasn't breathing. My stomach churned. Carol' eyes were wide open in shock. I could feel her blood seep through my shirt. She was growing weaker by the second because her eyes started to slowly close. The wound was on the side of her stomach in the middle of her abdomen. "No!" I shouted. I set her down on the cold floor and took out the pistol I took from one of the rooms. Dwight stood there with a smirk on his face with his gun still raised. I cocked back the hammer and pulled the trigger before he could even realize what was happening. I watched a red hole appear on his forehead before he fell to the ground. He lay on his side with a shocked look on his face. The clatter of his gun falling with him was all I heard. Carol lay at my feet gasping for air. Her hand was draped across her stomach as she stared at the ceiling. I put the pistol back in my waistband as I knelt beside her. I slipped my arms back to where they were before and brought her up to my chest. It didn't take much strength to carry her light frame. I wasn't going to let her die. Not now. "Put me down, Daryl, please," she weakly said grasping onto my shirt. I ignored her pleading and began walking again. I felt her warm blood expanding across my chest, but I ignored it. "Daryl, put me down," she repeated in the same tone. I stepped over Dwight's corpse while Carol tried to struggle. "Daryl, you can't save me anymore! I'm not gonna live! Just put me down before you get hurt," she said louder sounding like she was about to cry. My eyes shot towards her. She looked up at me with water pouring down her face. She was in pain and now all she wants to do is give up. I slowly set her down afraid I was going to cause her pain. "Carol," I whispered trying to get rid if the lump in my throat. I wanted her to tell me she was going to live and stay by my side, but she didn't. I couldn't save her anymore. I've failed at the only job I had. She's now dying because I didn't help her. I was selfish when she needed me and now she's dying because of me. "Carol, say somethin'," I stared into her dreary eyes."Find Rick and the others. You're gonna kill me and leave me here. You're gonna find them and fight," she whispered with a weak face. "It hurts, Daryl," the hand grasping my neck clutched onto me tighter. I rested my forehead on hers and held her face in my hands. Tears were stinging my eyes. I lifted my head slightly to see her pained face. "I know. Just don't go. Carol, please," I pleaded. "I can't stay," she sighed with a weak smile. I lifted my fingers from her face to see a red handprint on her cheek. The fading color in her eyes made me go cold. She was turning into a walker by the second and I couldn't stop it. Although, she still had a weak smile on her face. This is exactly how she should die. With a smile on her face, but the cause was too much too bare. Did she want this or did she try not to cry to not cause me more pain? I already had water stinging my eyes and the lump in my throat wouldn't go away. A stray tear started to slip down my cheek. I couldn't tell where it was since it turned the the temperature of my skin. It felt like it was apart of me. "Daryl," when I heard Carol call my name, my head perked up. "Don't try to find me after. Just keep going like I didn't exist," she whispered. I watched her intensely as she took in shallow breathes slowly. "I promise," I said with a determined look on my face. I was going to do what she asked of me. It was the only thing she wanted from me. Carol nodded her head lightly as she bit her lip with her canine. Her eyes then started to slowly close which seemed like it took forever. She stayed still and her breathes took too many seconds to take in and let out. She was close to her death. My heart beat began to quicken once I realized what was happening. "Carol," I called hoping she would jump up and say it was a prank, but nothing happened. Her head then started to fall limp to one side. I caught it gently as if it would bring her back. I looked down at her stomach, where she was shot and saw it deplete, but never rise again. My eyes shot back to her closed ones. I couldn't think. "Carol, no. No! Come back!" I cried. Her eyes stayed shut and she was still. She was dead. I couldn't breath. Anytime soon, she'd be back, but not as herself. She asked me to kill her and that's what I'll do. I unsheathed the pocket knife she hid in her boot while warm tears fell down my face. I glared at the blade as I tilted her head slightly to show the back of her neck. I didn't bother to watch my hand shove the knife into her brain stem; I just closed my eyes. I yanked the blade out and saw a gleaming red covering it. I wiped the metal on my pants when I felt water gushing from my face. My heart felt like it was collapsing in on itself. I wanted to throw up. Before I knew it, I stood up with Carol's knife in my hand. I stood over Dwight's corpse before driving the blade into his stomach and putting a tear right through the middle of his abdomen. I made repeated cuts all across his body causing blood to splatter all across my face. I knew some other Saviors would be here soon because of the sound of the gunshots. So, I picked her up again and left the same way I did the last time I escaped.
Caryl Prompt: Soft
(Setting is Alexandria)Daryl liked how Carol's skin was soft after she took a shower. He would find any excuse to get close to her. He would pass by her and accidentally bump into her just to feel her touch him. Daryl felt sorrow when her voice was soft when she cried. She wasn't raspy and she wasn't a woman who he could barely understand when she cried. His heart would slowly sink to his stomach. He just wanted to hold her when water fell from her face. Daryl knew how soft she was inside and how he didn't want it to harden. He tried his best to keep her happy, but he knew that he couldn't keep her innocent. No one in this world was innocent. He knew how soft her lips were when they were pressed against his forehead. He just only wanted to feel those soft, pink, pieces of flesh on his.

Just Had a Caryl Cannon Thought
What if Daryl got his vest back for some reason (whether he killed Dwight or in a possible war he just got it back) and when he was looking through the pockets, he noticed a pack of cigarettes. When he dumped the contents into his hands it was Dwight and Sherry's rings. Seeing the opportunity, Daryl used it to propose to Carol when he saw her again (most likely after the possible war).
You know what I realized? When they hug for the last time, Carol sends Daryl away to a scenario where everything's ok and will stay that way, whereas Daryl's almost hugging Carol for the last time as he is preparing for war and the big confrontation against Negan. On Carols end is like see you later, on Daryl's like I hope I see you again (if I make it). And I think that's beautiful â¤
And also, I think the goodbye hug was meant to make it all the more clear that Carol is what Daryl is holding onto.
He goes to leave, into the war and knowing that he probably wonât see her again for a while, and then he turns around and basically runs back to Carol and embraces her. The way he hugs her shows how much he was savoring it. Burying his nose in her shoulder and breathing her in. Clinging to her for as long as he could before he had to leave.Â
Itâs no coincidence that right before Morgan calls him out on holding onto something, Daryl is shown holding onto Carol. That makes it even more obvious that she is what he is holding onto.Â
daryl making carol laugh is the best thing ever
I'm getting more and more concerned that Gimple is gonna do the whole canon without seeing the canon moment for Caryl where we see them in bed together or such without the union scene, I can hear Gimple in my head "we wanted the audience to play it out in their heads as we could never meet expectations" and honestly I will fight him if it goes like this cause can anyone imagine anything better than Daryl or Carol's facial expression after a first kiss?
Iâm not gonna lie Anon - THIS is my biggest fear! I have zero worries about ti not going canon, but I have had this dear in my head for most of the season that they will reveal Carol and Daryl the way they revealed Michonne and Ezekiel in the comics - waking up in bed.
And that theyâve kept the Ezekiel crush thing in as a red herring so people think it MIGHT be Carol and Ezekiel in bed together but NOPE, SURPRISE itâs Daryl.
If this happens, I will start a gofundme to raise enough money that I can fly to LA and personally slap Gimple in the face. Because after X-Files pulling this crapola, if TWD does it too I may actually need to be incarcerated.Â
THE ONLY WAY to do this and not have me kill a man, is for the cold opener to be that and then the ep goes back in time to a few hours previously to show how it happened.
Are you listening, Gimple?! Thatâs the ONLY WAY I will allow this.
Dude if he does that I donât even know what am I going to do. I NEED TO SEE THEIR FIRST KISS, THE REALIZATION IN THEIR FACE WHEN THEY KISS FOR THE FIRST TIME.
I need to see Daryl going for it not wanting it to be over; I need to see Carol smiling while kissing him.
IM GONNA ATTACK SOMEONE IF GIMPLE DOES THIS TO ME (ภâ˘Ě_â˘Ě)ŕ¸
I KnoooooooooooooooooooooooowÂ
And look, itâs not just being prurient (I use that word because Iâm still super bitter Chris Carter said weâd have our prurient interests satisfied, and then didnât cos he is a lying bastard). This story is a GOLDMINE of materialâŚ
There is SO MUCH that could be dug through to give some really juicy drama on screen - the awkwardness, the fear of failure, the fear of losing the other, the fear of loving too much, the emotional scars, the physical scars, the emotional fucking minefield.
SOOOOOO much on a plate as a gift to Gimple on a silver platter, youâd think heâd lap that up.
And yetâŚ
We had Sam, a abused child, and Jessie an abused wife⌠and did we have Carol and Jessie interacting and exploring that? We did not. Did we have Daryl seeing in Sam what he saw in his own childhood and connecting with the kid, and thus connecting him to ASZ? We did not.
Scientifically, empirical evidence shows Gimple takes drama gifts and throws them out the window in favour of⌠well, god only knows.
Negan has taste in bedroom design.

Song from tonights episode
Crying
I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight As you stopped to say âHelloâ Aw you wished me well, you couldnât tell
That Iâd been crying over you, crying over you Then you said âso longâ. left me standing all alone Alone and crying, crying, crying crying Itâs hard to understand but the touch of your hand Can start me crying
I thought that I was over you but itâs true, so true I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do For you donât love me and Iâll always be
Crying over you, crying over you Yes, now youâre gone and from this moment on Iâll be crying, crying, crying, crying Yeah crying, crying, over you
âWho are you?â-Negan
âDaryl.â
Thatâs right, Youâre DARYL.
Heâs stronger than they think.
