“Don’t worry, we don’t need a recipe! I’ve done this a hundred times.” Asato exudes confidence as he starts grabbing ingredients: sugar, flour, semisweet chocolate, butter. He’s rooting around for eggs and frowning thoughtfully at his near-empty fridge when he says, “We can substitute eggs with something else, right? I’ve heard applesauce is good.”
He’s just happy to have someone to spend the afternoon with. His room- mate is gone for the day, off at some Christian event that Asato doesn’t quite understand but is fully supportive of as long as no one asks him to believe, and it’s the first time in ages he’s had the room to himself. But as nice as the quiet is, it can get lonely very quickly. He’s happy Carlos is here. Even happier that he has an opportunity to show off his cooking skills.
Well, almost cooking. As college students, creativity is important.
He sets out two mugs, one for each of them.

“If you’re sure,” the younger man says, sounding slightly dubious. Carlos watches Asato move around the kitchen from his perch on the kitchen counter, head cocked slightly to the side and feet kicking idly; he rests his elbows on his knees, chin resting on his hands. “Yeah, applesauce will work. Unsweetened if you have it. If not, just put a little less sugar. Unless you wan tooth rottingly sweet cookies.” That sounded kind of good, actually.
It’s nice, hanging out with Asato like this. Carlos and his roommate don’t have an antagonistic relationship, per se. It’s more like they try to ignore each other’s presence as much as possible. It kind of worked out for the most part, but it got kind of... lonely, if he was being entirely honest. He was used to the constant noise of energetic younger siblings, the constant hustle of a busy family. Having a roommate that spends so little time around him and ignores Carlos when he is around sucks, to put it lightly.
Trying to distance himself from the gloomy thoughts, Carlos smiles and says, “I’ve never tried mug cookies before.”

“Hm?” Carlos hummed, poking his head into the kitchen. “Oh, I had to clean it out. I didn’t want to put it into the dishwasher in case it broke though, so I left it out to air dry. I don’t think it has anything in it, so you can move it if you need to.”
Carlos’ lips brushing against his brought a smile to his face. “I like your science anywhere you want to put it. Except on the stove when we are going to cook.” The radio host was very happy that Carlos had come into his life like this. “I would love a sous chef. I already gutted, defeathered and took the poisoness spines out of the chicken. If you would cut up the veggies.” Cecil looked up from what he was doing and smiled to his boyfriend.
“Duly noted,” Carlos said with a quick nod of his head. Trying not to think about the poisonous spines or the general weirdness of Night Vale animals in general, he added, “Of course querido.” He grabbed the veggies in question as well as a clean knife and cutting board. Carlos smiled back, a mellow grins that warmed his entire face. As he sliced through the vegetables with quick, practiced movements, he marveled over the turn his life had taken. “Do you mind if I play some music? I have a song stuck in my head.”
