Honestly, I think this is a good thing. Fact is, Daryl has said pretty much everyone else’s name to their face, except Carol’s. Because, as he’s proved, he gets shy around her. And clumsy. And awkward.

And that’s not the way he acts around the others, who he has platonic bonds with. He says their names to their faces with no problem - because when he talks to them, and when he’s around them, he doesn’t get overcome with that shyness and awkwardness. The kind he gets when he’s with Carol.

Daryl has a variety of inhibitions, none of which are shown when he’s with everyone else…and all of which are shown when he’s with Carol, and only Carol.

The rare use of her name and the fact that he hasn’t said it to her face is another one of his inhibitions. Saying your pals’ name or your brother’s name is a whole lot simpler and easier than saying the name of the woman you’re in love with. Especially to her face. 

So, when he does say her name to her face (which I firmly believe he will) it is going to be a huge moment.

I have absolutely nothing against shipping culture when it’s meant to be light and fun, but it really… really bothers me when real life relationships between idols get oversimplified and limited to ‘moments’, i.e. instances of public and, most importantly, blatant display of affection in order to be validated. some fans will be on the edge of their seats for skinship that “shows” how genuine their relationship are, but will completely ignore the subtlety of trust, of everything non-physical that implies a strong bond because it’s not enough for them - it’s not romantic enough for them. they can’t seem to draw the line between the ship and the real life relationship and, if the first concept doesn’t get fed by evidence that it’s ‘real’, the second one suffers from the same impression that there’s absolutely nothing tying those two persons together and that their bond isn’t worth celebrating otherwise.
