just thinking about how perfect a fleabag au is for hucklerobby.
like dennis being a priest marrying someone in robby’s circle (maybe jack and samira?). robby being an atheist jew who is just there for his friend as his best man.
robby in the pitt narrative is the only one we get flashbacks from, which translates well to fleabag’s narrative device of her being the only one who can talk to the audience.
just imagine robby is sitting there at dinner and he remarks to what he believes is his own private audience that no one has asked him a single question in 45 minutes. and then dennis just…asks him what he does.
robby also has this deep theme of searching for spirituality. he mentions luke and paul the apostle, he recites the shema, he talks multiple times about how god has stopped talking to him/he has stopped talking to god, he mentions sisyphus, and hawaiian grieving traditions, even some new age zen stuff. he craves a type of universal spiritual meaning, and is drawn to people who also question the way he does.
he’s not gonna become catholic or episcopalian or whatever the fuck dennis is, but being around someone so sure is a little intoxicating after he’s spent a lifetime bargaining with death. being able to talk to someone who knew so much but was still so curious was an opportunity robby had rarely found.
and for all the reasons robby fell in love with dennis, they’re the same reasons they can never have each other.
“it’s god, isn’t it?” robby asked.
dennis looked down and flashed a sad smile. “yeah,” he said simply.
robby deflected with humor, “damn.” because damn it all to hell, a hell robby didn’t even believe in. “damn.” they both had tears in their eyes, but robby kept going. “you know, the worst thing is that i fucking love you?”
dennis grabbed robby’s hand. he glanced down at the man’s lips like he couldn’t help it. he took a deep breath before replying, “it’ll pass.”
