Helena Carmen Gammelthorpe is, on paper, the new queen of PS 118. She's stylish, fashionable, always up to date on the newest gossip. She's cool, calm and collected, always knowing exactly what to do in every situation. Nearly everyone agrees she's destined for great things, and her personal goal in life is to act.
But beneath the surface beats a loving, romantic soul. She adores old romantic stories and books, and more than anything she adores Phillip Shortman. Her crush is utterly paralyzing, and she panics at the very thought of him finding out, so she covers it up with sneers and sarcasm, constantly weedling at him, getting involved in battles of wits with the male Shortman triplet. She thinks it's temporary, it will go away. It's been five years since this crush started. It's not going away.
Maximus 'Max' Augustus Gammelthorpe sees the entire world as a performance. Helena's younger brother by a single year, he embraces his personal dramatics. Max is at such ease in social settings that he can blend in with any clique and not be treated like an outsider. He annoys the hell out of his sister Helena by constantly poking holes in her perfect armor. Max embraces his overactive imagination, often adapting a persona with accompanying garb for what role he's imagining himself in. His most famous alter-ego is 'Max Caliber', a hard-boiled detective who will find anything for the right price (usually candy), from gossip to test answers...if you can put up with his overly-flowery noir talk.
