Recorded at Orange Sound by Ash Umhey, āFossilsā features contributions from Morgan Y. Evans (Walking Bombs) and Umhey, with mastering taking place at Witch Ape Studio by the legendary Thomas Andrew Doyle (TAD,Ā Brothers of the Sonic Cloth).
"As a lifelong fan of the '90s music scene, it was a real pleasure and honor to have Tad master this song," Dapena says.Ā
"In life, sometimes people think they can get away with the bad things they have done, and, maybe, for a while, it seems like they have gotten away with it. But as Bob Marley said, 'There ain't no hiding place from the Father of Creation.'
"A fossil was once alive before it was turned into an artifact by the Earth, but they were always there. The same analogy can be applied to whatever you think youāre hiding from God."
Dapena is of Puerto Rican and Polish descent and her songs are informed by her book-worthy chaotic life, time spent interning at K Records in Olympia, Washington, as well as the DIY folk punk ethos. Having shared the stage with bands like Against Me!, Screaming Females, and Waxatachee (to name a few), she was also featured in the avant-garde docu-seriesĀ The Bender's Circuit, directed by Angela Izzo and Eric Zimmerman (Soundgarden, etc.), now streaming via Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
GLOBELAMPĀ has been compared to The Space Lady, Myrkur, and Joanna Newsom, while drawing influence from various artists, including Riot Grrrl, Jenny Lewis, Melanie Martinez, and author Francesca Lia Block. Previously releasing music on labels such as Witchita, Nefarious Industries, and Psychedelic Thriftstore Recordings,Ā GLOBELAMPĀ embodies the Southern CaliforniaĀ aesthetic instead of simply borrowing it.
"Fossils" precedes a new psych-folk album in the finishing stages in Tustin, California, with a hopeful release planned for 2025. It will be Dapenda's first since 2018's understated charmerĀ Romantic Cancer. Since that time, Dapenda has battled industry sexism, unearthed more about their previously uncertain parentage, and survived a near-death health scare, all while continuing to make their own brand of musical magick.
