YAY for tautonyms!

It’s a sculpture of a defeated boxer, complete with caestus, or leather handwraps, still wrapped around his fists. Look at the cauliflower ear, the cuts, and the swollen face. It’s straight out of the latest pay-per-view but this was created more than 2,300 years ago. 

But I will say that the Latinity in the Latin version of Facebook does have some problems.  The most basic grammatical points are not horrible, but whoever came up with the Latin translation there 1) seems not to have bothered to do much research on the use of already-created Neo-Latin words for modern concepts and consequently resorted to inventing them as he or she went along (in other words, this is a case of “reinventing the wheel”), and 2) seems to have had little or no training in Latin word formation (unfortunately, this is something you really do not get much in Latin class nowadays, and I had to go out of my way to learn it on my own).  I used to use the Latin version of Facebook, and very often, I had no idea what a word was supposed to signify because it was so badly formed.  This nonsense eventually annoyed me so much that I went back to the English version.

Life in these buildings wasn’t super fun - insulae had no running water, toilets cellars, or ovens, which meant that dwellers had to use public fountains, public toilets, and had to buy ready-made food from bakeries or street food sellers. The living quarters were dark, cramped, and unsanitary, and had a high risk of catching fire and even collapsing due to shoddy construction from money-pinching landlords or contractors. Because the insula lacked even the most basic necessities, most people were forced to spend the bulk of their social time outside - on the street, in shops and public baths, or in places of entertainment like the coliseum.
