Oh wow this makes me SO sad. I knew their friendship waned in later years, but seeing it laid out like this you feel you can see exactly what happened.
I think one of the things that makes Nelson such an interesting historical figure to follow is that he was a proper celebrity in his time, in the modern sense of the word, so we have so much ephemera from the time that people saved, and so still exists for us to read and get a small peek through the crack of the door.
I love these snippets, they're so sad because they're so relatable. You can read about battles and parties and ships and not really get an idea of what anyone was like, but we've all been in situations like this- with friends, family or romantic partners. It reminds me of that quote from 'The Talented Mr.Ripley' - 'The thing with Dickie... It's like the sun shines on you,and it's glorious. And then he forgets you and it's very, very cold'. Someone meeting someone new, and your relationship changing, and taking it very very hard happens today just as it happened to sailors two hundred years ago. Plus then Nelson sending that harsh letter- I've absolutely been in situations like that, where because of distance and distraction a relationship has strained and weakened, and all it takes is some imagined slight to turn it into a fight.
It's one of the reasons why I totally get why a lot of Nelson's shipmates weren't the biggest fans of Emma. I think historians in the past have fallen into the trap of quoting their critiques of her as if it's unbiased factual record of her character. But it's just the classic thing of one of the boys getting a girlfriend so he doesn't want to come hang out anymore. I think there's something so human to that feeling of loss, and expressing it through 'i don't like her, she sucks' .
Poor old Troubridge. We have enough records of his correspondence to get an idea of his personality - and I'm going off memory but I think in his prime he was sorting of blustering and acerbic, So to see him so heartbroken over Nelson is really, really moving.
So I already did a version of this, but it was on my little travel tablet so it looked...ahem...a bit rough
So now I'm home it was time for a redo.
