This isn’t how politics is supposed to work.  The point of democracy is that we can solve our problems at the ballot box.  Peaceful protest is a core American value, but so is respect for the humanity of one’s political opponents.  If we want to reunite a divided America then harassment and violence can have no place in the United States.

Editorial by Kevin Ryan The deadliest and most destructive fire in California’s history was finally brought under control by firefighters yesterday, more than two weeks after it erupted. So far 87 people are confirmed to have been killed in the blaze, and many are still missing. But the media firestorm continues over President Trump’s assertion that poor forest management contributed to the disaster. After Trump tweeted that better forest management could have prevented, or at least mitigated, the damage caused by the devastating wildfires, the media and California politicians said his assertion was false. A spokesman for California Governor Jerry Brown said that the president’s assertion was “inane” and “uninformed.” The New York Times wrote a piece entitled “Trump’s Misleading Claims About California’s Fire ‘Mismanagement’” Yet just a few months back, both Governor Brown and The New York Times said basically the same thing as Trump. In a January article, the Times wrote that “A group of scientists warned in the journal BioScience that [100 million] dead trees could produce wildfires on a scale and of an intensity that California has never seen,” and that “scientists say they cannot even calculate the damage the dead-tree fires might cause; it exceeds what their current fire behavior modeling can simulate.” “‘It’s something that is going to be much more severe,’ said Scott Stephens, a professor of fire science at Berkeley and the lead author of the study. ‘You could have higher amounts of embers coming into home areas, starting more fires.’” The Times article even pointed the finger at California’s forestry regulations, saying “California forests are much more vulnerable now because, paradoxically, they have been better protected. In their natural state, forests were regularly thinned by fire but the billions of dollars that the state spends aggressively fighting wildfires and restrictions on logging have allowed forests to accumulate an overload of vegetation… That’s a scenario that could nudge the state into rethinking its forest management.“ And yet, fast forward to today, and The New York Times is suddenly interviewing “experts” to contradict its previous assertions now that President Trump has also questioned California’s forest management. “President Trump’s statements, which drew outrage from local leaders and firefighters, oversimplified the cause of California’s wildfires.” The Times says that the logging advocated by Trump, Republicans, and, apparently, The New York Times last January, would not have helped because “logging gets rid of trees, but it does not get rid of the kindling — brush, bushes and twigs. Logging does, however, enable the spread of cheatgrass, a highly combustible weed, which makes a forest more likely to burn.” That’s basically the opposite of what the Times’ said earlier this year. And it’s not just the media reversing itself to discredit Trump. Governor Brown’s office was calling for the same changes to logging regulations just a few months ago. In order to mitigate the fire danger from dead trees, Brown proposed that landowners be permitted to cut trees up to 36 inches in diameter, a jump from the current 26 inches, on properties that are 300 acres or less without getting a timber harvest permit and would also be able to build roads up to 600 feet long. Of course the environmental lobby opposed it. And now huge swaths of land that environmentalists were “protecting” are now embers. But Brown, and the media, would rather reverse their recent calls for safer forestry management than to agree with the president. Economic Misperception: the general public thinks the average company makes a 36% profit margin, which is about 5X too high. In 2013, a poll asked Americans the following question: “Just a rough guess, what percent profit on each dollar of sales do you think the average company makes after taxes?” The majority of Americans said 36%. However as the data shows, this is INCORRECT. According to data from NYU-Stern, which has a database of over 7,000 companies across a comprehensive variety of industries, the average profit margin for ALL industries is only 7.9%. If we exclude the financial services industry, which has higher profit margins, from this equation, the average profit margin across all industries is only 6.9%. What about that evil corporate conglomerate known as Walmart? Well, as the graph shows, Walmart only turned a 2.1 cent post-tax profit for every dollar of sales they made in 2017. Let that sink in. Walmart had a TWO PERCENT profit margin. Not exactly consistent with the picture of a greedy corporation. In fact, TAXES make up a LARGER percentage of Walmart sales than profits. Part of the explanation for this is that more than HALF of Walmart’s sales are for groceries, which tend to carry lower profit margins. And before you start talking about the stories of working conditions at Walmart, we are aware of those anecdotal accounts, and there is probably some truth to those accounts. This is merely to point out that Walmart isn’t flush with and hoarding cash so as to avoid paying higher wages. What about much maligned “big oil companies?” Well, the Integrated Oil/Gas industry made a profit BELOW the overall average at 5.6%. More specifically, the Production/Exploration oil and gas industry is LOSING money, turning a negative profit of -6.6%. Further, more broadly speaking, only 9% of corporate income in America goes to profits, 63% goes to workers. In conclusion, no, corporate profits are not high, on average. Nor are they cheapskating workers. Don’t be dumb.  This is a really dumb argument.  It’s does not even theoretically hold water economically or empirically speaking.

Greed doesn’t come from the size of profit margins, it comes from what they DO with it. You’ve done a good job off pointing out a misconception. But you’re not at all refuting the fact that IF YOU CAN’T CREATE PROFIT MARGINS BIG ENOUGH to PAY your EMPLOYEES a DECENT WAGE, you AREN’T RUNNING a VERY GOOD BUSINESS.

Theses signs were put up around my college campus on Halloween night for the second year in a row. If you find this thinly veiled white supremacist rhetoric to be positive or acceptable in anyway, then unfollow me. If you care more about assuaging your white guilt than about creating and maintaining an environment where people of color can feel safe, then unfollow me. If you are uncertain as to why this propaganda is problematic, then I encourage you to educate yourself and open up dialogue with the people these signs directly affect. Black and brown people, be safe. White people, we need to listen and be respectful. These are tumultuous times, and we must not be afraid to take action.

If these signs said “it’s ok to be black” they would be met with “of course, hashtag black girl magic”.

So a part of me understands the absurdity of these posters being put up, but at the same time the reaction is unwarranted.
