Briefcases and Bloodspatter: Chapter 5: Benny doesnât share food!!
Hello all, thought Iâd get another update in while I could. I know this one is a bit filler-ish. I hope you all enjoy it though, I needed to get the story rolling through though!
Liv had just managed to tidy up a bit and throw on a t shirt and a pair if shorts before there was a knock at her hotel room door. Quickly she checked her reflection in the mirror â sheâd managed to tame her hair into a long plait and luckily sheâd yet to take her subtle make up off.
She opened the door and smiled at Benny, who stood patiently at the threshold. He hadnât stopped to change out of his work out wear, and she look a moment to enjoy his exposed arm muscles. He had fixed his hair though.
âIâm really sorry for dragging you out this late.â She started to apologise, stepping out the way so he could come past her and enter the room.
âNo need to apologise, didnât I say call me whenever you need me?â He shot her a cheeky grin and winked âQuite sad youâve put clothes on though, the towel dress was a good look.â
âBut a chilly one.â She closed the door and followed him into the depths of the room. He took a seat on a plush green armchair and looked around.
âItâs a nice hotel room youâve got here.â
âThank you, you actually get to see inside it this time.â She laughed and grabbed a pair of glasses from the under-desk cabinet. âCan I get you a drink?â she waved the bottle of wine and glasses at him.
âA drink would be great. Thank you.â
âWell, I have a bottle of white wine here, or water, or I can call room service to get you a scotch?â
âWhite wine is fine, no need to fuss.â Benny got up from his chair and came over to her smiling warmly. He took the bottle in one hand and placed the other on the small of her back, nudging her toward the seating area. She couldnât help but replicate his smile, his small gesture was so familiar â commanding and gentle â completely Benny Colon.
They both sat in the chairs and Benny poured them each a glass of wine. A moment of comfortable silence fell over the room as they sipped their drinks.
âSo, what did you find? Benny asked putting his glass down and imperceptivity shifting into business Benny mode, his expression serious.
âAfter youâd left this afternoon, I managed to collate and package up those semen samples. I ran a whole barrage of tests â potency, virility, DNA markers, age verification âŚâ
Benny grimaced âYou can run a test for that?â
Liv nodded and took a gulp of her wine. âWell, yeah, every manâs sperm is like a signature to them. One of a kind if you like. Itâs kind of an off shoot from the DNA markers. Itâs also how we check for any present illnesses that may show up in a sperm count.â
Benny nodded and gestured for her to continue.
âAnyway, the vast majority of it belongs to Brandon â as we expected. But, thereâs sperm there that doesnât fit his DNA markers.â
âSo that means ⌠he wasnât just having sex with women on that boat âŚâ
âExactly. And according to my test results weâre looking for an older man. Cable sent me a few hits, I just need to go through them and pinpoint before we put the cat among the pigeons.â
Benny furrowed his brow in confusion. âBut I thought it was all individual?â
Liv nodded, âIt is. But itâs easier to pull correct 99.9% accurate results when you have a âlivingâ sample to compare it to. This sample is a mere smidgen and faded on material, itâs harder to pull a correct reading straight off. Comparisons are harder.â
âIâm sure this will help us, somehow. Thank you.â
Liv shrugged, âItâs all part of my job.â She yawned and stretched her arms above her head. Bennyâs eyes instantly fell to the strip of flesh that peeked out with the movement. âSorry to call you out in the dead of night, now that I say it out loud, it could have waited.â She bit her lip bashfully, and played with the frayed hem of her shorts.
âDonât be sorry! Iâm finding spending my evenings with you is a pleasure. Iâm glad you tore me away actually, ten more minutes and Bull would have forced me into some night time trial prep.â
âI saw you were in the office, donât you have a home to go to Mr Colon?â she joked not caring if she sounded openly flirty. The wine had gone straight to her head from the adrenaline rush.
Benny laughed, relaxing now that the business talk was over and done with. âI do. A nice modern apartment about ten minutes from the office. I do get to go home and relax sometimes.â He looked thoughtful for a second. âIt gets a bit quiet though.â
âNothing at all to come home to?â Liv could have kicked herself for asking the question. She desperately wanted to hear the answer, but she didnât at the same time. It was like her subconscious needed to know if she was wasting her time, or if she was going to be heart broken by this Latin demi god.
He chuckled lightly and fixed her with that intense gaze. âNothing. Not even a pet.â
âThatâs a little sad. I donât know what Iâd do without my puppy.â She handed him her phone, proudly showing off her pride and joy. âHis name is Chico. Heâs my fur baby.â
âHe looks friendly.â Benny handed her back her phone âWhoâs looking after him while youâre here?â
âMy best friend. Eliza basically moved into my flat to make sure he wonât wreck it.â
Benny nodded and glanced at his watch âI should really be getting home.â He got up and made his way to the door. Liv followed him and paused while he opened the door chewing her bottom lip.
âThanks for the drink Liv.â He was stood close enough that she could hear his lowered voice.
How does he still smell amazing after working out?
âNo, thank you for coming. You really didnât have to.â
âA beautiful girl tells me she needs me, wearing nothing but a towel? Iâd have no brain if I said no.â He tucked a stray piece of hair back behind her ear and pulled her into a hug. She enjoyed the gesture, wrapping her arms around his neck, and breathing in the masculine, musky scent of his hair.
Benny pulled away far too early for her liking, leaving her feeling suddenly cold without his body heat.
âIâll see you in the morning. Sleep well.â He winked at her and started to walk down the corridor towards the elevator.
âGood night Benny!â she called after him.
âGood night Liv.â
 ****
âSo why wasnât I invited to this pyjama party?â Bull asked accusingly, looking at Benny and Olivia over the top of his glasses as they talked in his office the next morning.
âIt was late and I didnât want to disturb you âŚâ Liv uncomfortably pushed an imaginary crease out of her skirt in agitation. Benny just rolled his eyes.
âGive it up Bull, youâre not invited to everything.â The lawyer pointed to the files Liv had placed on Bullâs desk. âWhat is important, is that Liv here, found an anomaly in the semen.â
âAn anomaly?â Bull started looking through the paperwork.
âIâve not been able to get an exact match yet, but thereâs more than just Brandonâs semen on his jeans from that night.â
âHe was with another man.â
Bull nodded, flicking through each sheet.
âMy tests say itâs an older man. Iâve got to do a bit of DNA profile matching today before I can give you a precise who.â
âGood work. This might just be the ace weâre looking for.â
 ****
âSo I missed a hell a day, clearly.â Liv said as she sat down next to Benny at the communal table.
Cable nodded emphatically. âGun play and everything.â
âPete Peters is in the hospital with a GSW. And Clyde is pushing for a second degree manslaughter deal at the DAâs office.â Benny said pouring water into Livâs glass.
âHeâs just sore because that brat Taylor Bensimon threw the ipad at his face.â Danny added as she and Chunk unloaded the groupâs Chinese order out onto the table, separating it off for each person.
âBensimon ⌠where have I heard that name?â Liv pondered, tapping her nails on the table and furrowing her brow in thought.
âTheyâre everywhere in this case.â Benny said, accepting his order from Danny.
âThe families are tightly linked. Like Taylor and Brandon were paired off as kids, without even a say.â
âSpeak of the devil. â Marissa said under her breath, but loud enough for the whole table to hear as Bull came through the door, leading Brandon over to their table.
âHave a seat Brandon.â The psychologist put pressure on his shoulders and he sat awkwardly next to Liberty. The kidâs eyes were red rimmed.
âHere you go momma.â Chunk handed Liv her lemon chicken and rice, sitting down next to her with his own food.
âUgh Chunk, Have I told you lately that I love you?â Liv asked, opening the box and inhaling the sweet scent from inside.
âNo, but you have now.â
âTo business.â Bull said as he paced around the table. âBrandon here, is going to testify. We need to give him some advice. Go.â
âSpeak up.â Marissa nodded at the young boy, trying to be as kind as she possibly could be.
âAnswer directly.â Benny said, putting a dumpling in his mouth.
âKeep your hands still.â
âDonât slouch.â Benny said through a full mouth.
âOnly answer questions, not statements.â
âDonât fill silences.â
âDonât smoke on breaks.â
âDonât talk with your mouth full, jeez Benny, I thought you were a gentleman?â Liv laughed, slapping Bennyâs bicep. His eyes went wide and he swallowed quickly.
âI was hungry.â He shrugged and winked at her. Liv shook his head wondering how he could be charming, even after such a revolting move.
âWhat did I tell you Liv, like a rabid animal when heâs hungry.â Cable joked.
He pouted and offered her a dumpling from his box, which Liv gladly accepted, with a friendly nudge of the elbow.
Everyone around the table that knew Benny watched the interaction open mouthed.
Benjamin Colon never willingly shared food.

Ok so this is a long and gratutiously fluffy little story. I hope it doesnât babble too much, i got a bit carried away. As you can probably guess, itâs set during the episode parenthood! Please enjoy the candy floss sweet fluff. Let me know what you think!!
Bella didnât think she had ever seen Ragosa so stressed. Not when he was administrator, not even the day he called her from his office crying because his eye surgeon had found a tumour.
At least then heâd talked to her. Heâd talked to her way into the day, after their shift had finished. He'd cried and poured everything he was feeling into her in that moment, holding onto her so tight his knuckles were white. And Bella had been there for him, as best friends should be. Sheâd sorted through treatment plans with him, driven him to the operation, and had been there when heâd woken up from the anaesthetic. She waited on him, hand and foot in his home while he recovered, and they binged on ice cream and comedy movies.
She would prop him up and support him wholly when he came to her with his problems, but she couldnât deal with the weird tense silence that was currently following him around.
He hadnât even said hello when they were in the locker room together that evening. Heâd just flung his bag into the locker, slammed the door and put his phone straight to his ear.
Now she stood behind the nurseâs desk, watching him as he paced back and forth on the other side of the wooden doors. Talking in quiet, heated Spanish on the phone.
âHe alright?â Jordan asked, leaning up against the desk. Jordan had always been nice to Bella from the day Ragosa had gotten her the job and introduced her to the team.
âNo. see that flexing thing heâs doing with his right hand? Itâs a stress reaction. He used to do that a lot while him and Lydia were divorcing.â He was indeed opening and closing his fingers into a fist at a steady pace by his side. âHe used to do it while we were at med school together too.â
Bella strained her ears, to see if she could pick up what he was saying.
âYou canât do this to my daughter, itâs her party in two days ⌠Iâll uh ⌠Iâll pay it off in instalments.â His head was drooped low in defeat. The pay cut down from administrator had really been doing a number on him, he could barely afford his rent and child payments to Lydia, he mostly ate at Bellaâs house because she knew he couldnât really afford to shop, but was too proud to mention it.
âPlease, Iâm begging you!â
Bella quickly left the nurseâs station and made her way over to Ragosa as he hung up and angrily slammed his fist into the wall, an angry, dejected look on his face.
âMichaelâ She said smoothly as she came up behind him. She put her hand on his shoulder, and he looked at her with sad eyes.
Jordan, who was still watching the display raised her eyebrows, and he raised his hands up to her âIâm sorry Jordan.â
âThatâs okâ the dark haired doctor said with a soft smile. âTake 5?â
Ragosa nodded and leaned back against the wall with his eyes closed. He let out a painfully shaky breath.
It hurt Bella to see him hurting so much. Michael was doing so well, living his life the way he wanted. He was supposed to be happy. She trailed her hand down from his shoulder and took his hand in hers. She gave him a little reassuring squeeze. âYou wanna grab a coffee? You look like you didnât sleep much?â she asked gently, her words only loud enough for the pair of them to hear.
He opened his beautiful dark eyes, that were full of worry and gave her a weak smile.
âYou know what Iâd really like?â he was slightly hoarse. He rubbed his thumb over hers where their hands joined. âIâd like a hug.â He looked up at her through his thick dark eyelashes. He looked like a defeated little boy, and it broke Bellaâs heart.
âHow about a hug and a coffee?â she posed, grinning at him, opening her arms wide for him.
âDeal.â
 ***
âSoâ Bella blew on her latte, hoping to cool it down. They were sat on the roof, with their feet dangling over the edge. A place you would never have found him a few months ago when he was administrator. âAre you going to tell me whatâs going on?â
Michael shuffled uncomfortably and knocked his head against the railing, he opened one beautiful brown eye and gazed up at her sadly. âI just lost the venue for Naomiâs birthdayâ
Now Bella understood. âHer Quinceanera?â
He rubbed a hand over his eyes, frustrated. âMmmhmm, just with the pay cut and everything, it adds up. I maxed out all my cards. I have no money Bel.â He sniffed and rubbed at his eyes. âIâve got two days Bel. I canât fix this âŚâ He looked down at his hands. âI canât fix it.â
Bellaâs heart hurt, watching the strong, wonderful man crumple like a wet tissue. She didnât know what she could do to take his hurt away. She laid her hand on his knee and gave it a squeeze.
âSheâll be crushed Bel. Sheâll never want to talk to me again. Lydia will kill me.â
âHeh. I never liked her.â Normally heâd have smiled, or come back with a quip about the feeling being mutual, but he just stared at the ground, pained. âIâm sorry sugar. I love you, and your kids.â She reached into her bag and took out her purse. Without a second thought, she handed him her credit card. âI donât know how much is on here Mikey âŚâ
He cut her off, pushing her card back to her, the look in his eyes was grateful.
âI canât take that Bel. You do enough for me. I know how much youâve scraped together on that card. You need that to live. Not bail me out of my problems.â He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek, his lips lingering on her skin longer than was probably appropriate for a kiss between best friends. âThank you though. Your offer means the world to me. But I got myself into this mess, Iâll get myself out too.â
She blinked, trying not to feel hurt that he was taking on all the burden himself. âIâm here if you need me though. Donât freeze me out, alright? You know Iâve always got your back.â
He gave her hand a little squeeze and offered her the most confident smile he could muster.
A wail of sirens broke them moment as three ambulances can screeching into the bay below them.
âDuty calls.â He said, standing and offering her his hand for balance,
Bella grumbled good naturedly and accepted. âAnd I havenât even finished my coffee.â
 ***
A flash of orange and obnoxious clicking of high heels caught Bellaâs eye, as the angry woman and teen stopped in the hallway where Ragosa was stood talking to a few colleagues. Bella and Jordan were going through and entering patient data onto the system not even a couple of feet away.
âDad, is it true weâre not having my birthday party?â
âOuch.â Jordan whispered, looking at Bella whose eyes were glued to the scene in front of her.
âOf course sheâs here, sheâd do anything to hurt and humiliate Michael.â
Jordan chuckled. âYou really donât like her, do you?â
Bella narrowed her eyes. âI never have.â She clenched a fist and struggled against her urge to storm over there. âShe accused us of having an affair. Dumb bitch.â
Jordan raised her eyebrows, âReally? Well I guess you and Ragosa are close. And I could see it. I think youâd be cute actually.â
Bella didnât say anything, but watched with gritted teeth as Michael tried to fight his corner against his angry ex wife and distraught daughter.
âIâm not taking crap for this Michael, you call and tell everyone itâs cancelled.â Lydia stormed out of the emergency room, not even glancing in Bellaâs direction.
âI canât believe this.â Naomi followed her mother, with her head down.
âNaomi! Honey!â Ragosa tried, but they flat out ignored him. He looked tired, unhappy and defeated. Bellaâs heart hurt for him again.
He left the waiting room they had been fighting in and trudged over to Bella. His dark eyes brimmed with tears as he looked at her. âI fucked it up Bel.â He leaned into her like a small child seeking comfort. She wrapped her arms around him and stroked his hair soothingly, breathing in the fresh scent of his aftershave. âSheâs going to hate me forever. I promised her everything. Iâm such a bad father, I chose to follow my dream, but its going to alienate her.â
Bella pulled him away from her and held him at armâs length, insisting he hold her dark gaze with his.
âYou, Michael Ragosa, are not a bad father. Youâre anything but.â He opened his mouth to protest, but she shushed him quickly. âWho are the people you think most about in your day? Every day?â
He shuffled his feet uncomfortably, but still maintained her eye contact, âMy kids, you, my mother.â
She wanted to blush and cheer that she was in that list, and that she was always on his mind, but she pushed it down. âExactly, your kids. They mean the world to you Mikey, and you try, youâve been through so much, but no matter what you do, you fight for them. And that makes you an amazing father.â
âBut the moneyâ
âMoney isnât everything Mikey. Youâve always put everything on hold, for the whole fifteen years Iâve known you. Now itâs time for you. You get to explore who you are, and all the things you missed out on.â
Ragosa nodded, and wiped his eyes. âYouâre right. I put off getting my eye surgery. I dropped out of med school â if Iâd have carried on I wouldnât be training in my 40s. I married the wrong girl.â His dark eyes flicked up to hers on the last item on his list.
Bella swallowed hard. He had married the wrong girl. During their days at med school theyâd had so many near breakthrough moments where they should have thrown caution to the wind, kissed and confessed their love for each other, but they didnât because he knew Lydia was safe and familiar. He didnât want to risk his heart being broken.
âAnd youâre fixing it all, right?â she held her breath, unsure how heâd answer. She knew sheâd never fallen out of love with Michael Ragosa over the years, even when she was engaged to her ex, which is why he was ex.
He looked at her with determination on his handsome face. âIâm trying.â
Bella nodded and gave him a soft smile. âHow about you leave it to me? Let me talk to Naomi, you know we get on like a house on fire.â
He cupped her cheek in his hand, smoothing his thumb over her skin, and looked into her eyes. âlove you.â His eyes were glassy and tears threatened to spill out of them.
âLove you too.â And she really did, he was her best friend, and she meant it wholeheartedly. âLeave it with me.â
He placed a chaste kiss on her cheek and grabbed a stack of files from the nursesâ station. âCheck in at 3 for coffee?â he asked, walking backwards and still smiling at her.
âOf course, go on, go ⌠before Topher has your ass for dawdling.â
âYou know, I kind of see why she thought you were having an affair.â Jordanâs whispering voice cut through Bellaâs reverie, sheâd completely forgotten the dark haired doctor was stood there, watching the whole exchange.
âJesus Jordan, I forgot you were there.â
âYeah you were far too wrapped up in the Michael and Bella show.â She grinned good naturedly, letting Bella know she was only playfully teasing. âSeriously though, you two have so much chemistry, what happened? Why arenât you together?â
âThere was just never a right time, and then he married Lydia, and now itâs too late.â
âSays who, you never got married, youâre both single now âŚâ
Bella sighed and rubbed her forehead. âItâs complicated. When youâve been in unrequited love for what, eighteen years, itâs a hard pattern to break. But Iâm still here for when he needs me. I always will be.â She thought for a second, tapping her fingernails on the desk, âJordan, I know Michael and TC have had their differences in the past, but would you two help me?â
Jordan smiled at her widely and slammed a folder shut. âOf course, leave the venue to me. Iâve got a few contacts.â
Bella felt her heart swell. âThank you Jordan, I really appreciate it.â
Jordan shrugged âWhat are friends for? And right now, Michael needs his friends.â
âThat he does.â Bella confirmed, digging her phone out of her pocket and dialling Naomiâs phone number. After a few rings the teen picked up.
âHola Bella.â
âHey Naomi-bean.â
âWhatâs up?â
âIâm looking at a birthday gift for you honey, whatâs your dress and shoe size?â
***
When the clock ticked round to 7 am Bella found Michael standing at reception, he looked tired and worn, with black bags under his eyes.
âHey you, you ok?â she wrapped her arms around his waist and held him tight, her chin resting on his shoulder.
âMmhmm I got one thing right tonight, I found the pacemaker Kristin needed.â He shrugged, half hearted.
âThatâs a great job, donât undermine yourself.â She gave him a squeeze and he turned in her embrace, so he could slide his arms around her.
âSheâs right, enough of a pity party out of you.â Jordan said as she came up to stand beside the pair of them. âEveryone is going out to dinner tonight, why donât you come?â
âAre you going?â Ragosa asked Bella, he turned his face to look at her. They were so close their noses touched and their breath mingled.
âOf course Iâm going, dummy, and so are you. You need it.â
Michael smiled and rubbed the tip of his nose against hers in a sweet gesture before diverting his attention back to Jordan.
âIâm buying!â she said, in a sing song voice, hoping it would convince him more.
âWell if youâre buying, then Iâm in.â Jordan grinned triumphantly. âI do have to go home and get some rest though.â
âI think thatâs a good idea Sugar. You look exhausted.â Bella ran her fingers through his dark hair, and he closed his eyes enjoying the gesture.
âAre you heading home now?â he asked her.
âNo, Iâve got a few last minute rounds and care plans to go through with Jordan, then Iâll head home.â
He nodded and placed a lingering kiss on her cheek, too tired to argue. âRing me later?â
âOf course, now get out of here, Mikey, before you get roped into the day shift too.â
âOk Ok, bye.â He headed towards the door, waving at them as he left, shoulders heavy and head slouched.
Bella and Jordan waited a minute, to make sure that he was actually gone before rounding up the remaining nightshift members.
âOk guys! First, I want to thank you all for your help. I know Michael will really appreciate it and be grateful that weâre treating him as family.â Bella started, there was a murmur of agreement that rippled around the gathered doctors and nurses.
âSo youâve all got your assignments from either myself, Bella or Kenny.â There was nodding all round. âWe donât have very long to pull this off, So letâs work together and make this amazing!â
There was a cheer in response.
âI think we can do better than that!â Jordan heckled and held her hand behind her ear. The staff obliged and cheered louder.
Bella felt a warm fuzzy feeling of happiness and excitement building in her belly. She had a long day ahead, but every moment was going to be worth it.
 *** 17:00 ***
âYou wonât let me go in?â Michael asked Bella, as he looked past her to the double doors of the Dew Drop Inn, that had been blacked out. âWhatâs going on?â
Krista and Drew came through the doors carrying pale pink balloon displays and placed them on either side of the entry way.
âI told you to leave it to me, didnât I?â Bella laughed, her smile warm, as she held Michaelâs face in her hands, keeping his attention on her. âWell me, and a few friends.â
The doors opened and almost the whole of the night shift spilled out into the entry way, dressed in party wear.
âWhat did you âŚâ Ragosa breathed, his eyes widened, but he was cut off by the roar of motorbikes.
Bella dropped her hands to hold his and indicated the swarm of motorbikes coming towards them.
âWhy donât you see for yourself?â Bella was smiling like a maniac as the realisation dawned across Ragosaâs handsome face.
In the middle of the parade of Bikes was TC, with Naomi clinging onto his jacket, but grinning and having the time of her life. Everyone around the whooped and cheered as the entourage came to a halt in front of them.
Michael opened and closed his mouth a couple of times, speechless.
âYou did this?â When he found his voice, Michael was astounded, his tone showing how impressed he was. He linked his fingers with Bellaâs and squeezed.
âWe all did, Mikey. Youâre part of the family now. We look out for each other. And you know Iâd never have let you go through this alone.â She squeezed his hand back and indicated Naomi who was getting off the back of TCâs bike. âI think your attention is supposed to be over there.â He walked towards his daughter, but looked at her again over his shoulder, dark eyes sparkling.
âThank you. All of you!â He raised his voice loud enough for everyone to hear, they all whooped and hollered again in response.
TC lead Naomi over to Michael and he wrapped his arms around her in a big hug. âHappy birthday sweetheart.â He kissed the top of her head.
âThis isnât what Iâd planned, but itâs still pretty cool!â the teen shrugged happily. âI got to ride on a motorcycle!â
âI see, I seeâ Michael said, eyeing TC with mock reproach. âWell I hope you enjoyed it, because itâs the last time you will!â he kissed his daughter on the forehead lovingly.
âBut Bella used to have one, when you were in med school ⌠You said she looked hot on it âŚâ
âOh-kay! Enough of that.â He cut her off with a wink and wide eyes. Bella, blushed and laughed.
Lydia cut her way through the crowd, glancing at Bella who fidgeted uncomfortably. âIâm not going to say Iâm not still mad at you Michael, but you have some pretty amazing friends.â
Michael nodded at her, but didnât say a word. He was determined to not spoil his princessâ special day.
âOk everybody, letâs go inside!â Jordan shouted ushering everyone through the doors.
Bella stopped Michael and Naomi at the door, âYou two have a wardrobe change. Theyâre hanging up in the bathrooms.â
Naomi made a squealing noise and pushed through the crowd desperate to get to her new dress.
Bella turned to go inside, but Michael grabbed her hand, holding her back so they were alone in the courtyard. âYou never cease to amaze me. Do you know that?â He uttered, smoothing a loose piece of hair behind her ear.
âEveryone deserves to be happy Michael.â She took the palm of his hand in hers and placed a kiss in the centre of it. âEven you.â Breaking the moment with a bright smile, she pulled him towards the doors. âCome on, weâve got a party to attend.â
He shook his head and followed after her into the building, chuckling to himself.
 ***
Bella had also changed, once the party had gotten underway. She wore a intricate gold 50s style swing dress, with matching shoes, which splayed out nicely on her bar stool as she watched Michael and Naomi perform their father daughter dance.
âThey look happy.â Jordan said, claiming the seat next to Bella, and grabbing a drink from the bar top.
âThey do, we really did an amazing job. Thank you for all your help. I donât know how weâll ever repay you for all of this.â Bella waved her hands around at the bustling room where everyone was chatting and dancing happily, Michael and Naomi in the centre.
âThereâs no need. Weâre a family. Itâs what we do. Though you could do one thing?â
Bella drained the last of the champagne from her glass and placed it back on the bar. âWhatâs that?â
âThe next song, you can get up and dance with him. Tell him how you feel.â
âI ⌠canât ⌠Iâ Bella stumbled, shaking her head. Jordan reached out and took her hand kindly.
âYou keep saying that Michael deserves to be happy. So do you. And I think nothing would make either of you happier, than if you realised how much you love each other. Â Even an idiot could look at the two of you and realise youâre meant to be together.â
âSheâs right. Iâve never seen two people I think should be together more.â TC agreed, coming over and stealing a mouthful of Jordanâs drink.
âI completely agree!â said Krista popping up from behind the bar and giving Bella a wink.
âAre we talking about Bella and Ragosaâs obvious chemistry?â Topher asked, joining the little group.
Bella laughed uncomfortably. âWhere did you all come from?â
The end beats of the song Michael had picked for their father daughter dance came to an end, and Naomi gave her father a hug, splitting off to mingle with her friends, who were ooing and ahhing over her pink silk and taffeta dress. Michael looked over the little group of his friends by the bar and grinned happily. He walked over to the DJ, talking to him quietly.
âNever mind that. We think you should.â Drew agreed, passing new drinks out to everyone.
âYou make it sound so easy. Weâve both been through so much.â
âAnd thatâs why you need eachother.â Jordan countered with a knowing smile.
The opening beats of the next song started to play, and Bella felt her heart swell, and tears form in her eyes. Michael smiled at her from by the DJ, starting to cut his way through the crowd towards her.
âWhat?â asked Krista, seeing the dewey look in Bellaâs eyes.
âHe remembered.â Bella laughed, sniffing slightly. ââWhen you say nothing at allâ by Ronan Keating, I told Michael once I loved this song, and it would be my perfect first dance âŚâ
âDo you need more of a sign?â Topher asked jokingly, dodging out the way when Bella swatted at him, laughing.
âMay I steal her away?â Michaelâs voice commanded her attention as he stood in front of her. their friends all nodded avidly. âDance with me?â This time his question was aimed directly at Bella. His beautiful dark eyes searching for hers and his hand outstretched for her to take.
She took it without a word and let him draw her body into his. He wrapped one arm around the small of her back and held her and in his. Their faces were so close they could feel one anotherâs breath on their cheeks.
âYou remembered.â
âOf course I did Bel, I remember everything youâve ever said to me. Youâre so special to me, you know. Whenever I need you, youâre there. Youâre my shelter in any storm.â
They moved gently around the dance floor.
âYou know when I tell you I love you, I mean it. Not in the platonic, youâre my best friend love, even though, I do and you are. I love you. I always have.â
She stopped them from moving, and leaned against him, looking up into his eyes.
âIâve always loved you too. You are my person, you know that Mikey.â
Michael, smiled, and leaned down pressing his lips against hers, in a tentative kiss. Bella grabbed his lapels and pulled him to her, deepening his kiss. He wound his fingers into her hair, as he slid his tongue over her bottom lip, begging for entrance.
Cheering erupted from the night shift staff, and Bell and Michael pulled apart, looking at each other sheepishly.
âItâs about bloody time!â Naomi called from across the room with a big grin on her face.
Briefcases and Bloodsplatter: Chapter 4 : Revelations Benny Colon x OC
Thank you all for waiting so patiently for chapter 4. Hopefully itâs good and not too rambling for you. Unfortunately I am a trainee nurse, and so Iâm finding it very difficuly to find time to write between working ridiculously long hours and sleeping. But Iâll do my best to get them out as much as I can. Enjoy!    2694 words.
Livâs eyebrows raised as she scanned through the menu. She bit her lip and glanced at Benny over the top of the folder. He looked relaxed and in his element, jacket off and sleeved rolled up to his elbows. He had barely even glanced at his menu, and was watching her in amusement.
âWhat?â He asked her, humour present in his voice.
âSo ⌠do you come here often?â She grinned sheepishly when he laughed at her unintentional joke. âI mean to eat, not as a chat up line ⌠althoughâŚâ
He gave a loud laugh, tipping his head back slightly and his shoulders shaking. âAha, yes. Bull and I come here a lot.â He said when he finished laughing, âItâs the perfect place to bring clients.â
âItâs an impressive place to bring clients.â She eyed the prices again, $30 for a basic spaghetti alfredo, it didnât even come with salad, or bread. She darenât even think how much the glass of rose in front of her had cost. âIs all of New York this expensive?â
âWell done Liv ⌠now you sound cheap!â she thought to herself, mentally faceplanting the table in front of her. âyou really need to learn to control your verbal diarrhoea.â
Benny didnât look offended at all, he shrugged âWeâre a bustling metropolis, you get used to the prices being sky high. Itâs not as expensive to live here though. You know, if you decide you like it here.â
Liv smiled at him and sipped her wine. âI guess there could be a few things that might persuade me to stay.â
âIt would be good to have you around more âŚâ He looked sheepish and took a mouthful of his own drink, fingers fidgeting, âyou know, we could do with a permanent forensic expertâ his words were sputtered and quick.
Liv, whoâd had a rush of warmth through her body listening to Bennyâs words, felt her heart drop through her stomach. She had only been in New York, and working for TAC for a couple of days, but sheâd felt an immediate connection with the dark haired lawyer. Heâd made her feel at ease, and made her knees feel weak. He was her idea of a perfect man â kind, passionate, intelligent, dedicated and easy on the eye.
And heâd flirted with her ⌠right? She chewed her lip, silently questioning herself whether sheâd misread his attitude towards her.
The waiter beside her cleared his throat and made her jump, shaking her out of her thoughts.
âYou alright Liv?â Bennyâs brow was furrowed and his eyes were filled with concern. He reached out and laid a hand over hers. Her skin felt tingly at the contact and she smiled at him weakly, nodding her head.
âYeah, sorry, spaced out there for a second.â She turned her hand over in his, so they were palm to palm. He smiled and nodded at her, but his eyes still held a little worry.
âWhat can I get you Miss?â the waiter asked.
Liv pulled her attention away from Benny and smiled at him. âThe spaghetti Alfredo, please. Nothing else. Thank you.â
The waiter wrote down her order and nodded, collecting up their menus.
âYou sure youâre ok? You left me there for a minute.â Benny asked again, his eyes holding hers with intensity.
âNot intentionally, sorry.â It was her turn to fiddle with her cutlery uncomfortably. âMy thoughts got away from me for a second. Iâm back now, I promise, I wont disappear on you again.â
âIâm glad to hear it. I like having you here with me.â
âThere he goes again ⌠thatâs flirting right?â
âSo tell me more about you Olivia Byrneâ Benny took a sip of his drink and leaned back in his chair watching her.
âYou really want me to bore you with my life story?â she joked.
âI donât think you could ever bore me, Liv.â
 ****
âThank you again for lunch Benny, you really didnât have to pay for me too.â You said, as the pair of you reached your little lab.
âIt was a pleasure to spend the time with you.â Benny leaned against the door jamb as you unlocked the glass panel. âThe first of many, I hope?â the relaxed Benjamin Colon that Liv had had lunch with was gone, he was back to being the perfect pristine lawyer, without even so much as a wrinkle in his jacket. His eyes though, his eyes were the same, somehow a captivating mixture of soft and intense all mixed into one.
Liv tried to hide the blush that peeked onto her cheeks. âIâd like that.â
âReally?â He smiled wide, dimples in his cheeks and showing off his perfect pearly whites.
âAhaâ Liv laughed and let them into her office, dropping her bag down onto her desk. âIâm surprised I didnât bore you to death with my life story.â
The TAC fairies had been in again and the makeshift morgue had returning to being a regular lab again. Liv shook her head in disbelief, how long had they been at lunch? She swore theyâd only been in the restaurant an hour and a half tops.
âNever.â Benny said seating himself on the edge of her desk. âSomeone loves you, youâve got a parcel here.â He nudged the large yellow padded bag.
Live rolled her eyes and sat down, quickly opening the package. She pulled out a little note card, two vacuum sealed bags filled with clothing and a wrapped pair of test tubes. She studied the note, and laughed out loud. Benny peered over her shoulder, also scanning the writing.
You asked for semen! Have fun! But not too much fun!
          Marissa x
He chuckled and shook his head. âThe body fluid work never stops for you, does it?â
âWhat can I say?â She countered, grinning, âWho doesnât like getting a little messy?â
âI completely agree.â His eyes held that fiery look again, the one that flooded Livâs skin with goose bumps and made her jig her thighs together to create a bit of friction.
âDo you now?â Liv asked seductively her voice, thick as honey. She licked her lips, and pushed all the items from her desk, not caring about the bangs and crashes. She kicked her chair back and climbed up onto the table, kneeling beside Benny, who was still watching her intently, with a cocky smirk on his handsome face.
âWant me to show you how much?â his voice was husky and low as he deliberately looked her up and down, as if she was something edible.
She didnât give him an answer. She just grabbed him by his lapels and pulled him flush against her, their lips slamming together in a heated, passionate kiss. One hand kept him pulled to her, while the other ran through his silky black hair. He ran a warm hand under the hem of her black blouse, the contact a burning tease.
âLiv, youâve gone again.â Benny roused her from her trance with an knowing grin plastered on his handsome face. âWhat are you thinking about?â his voice had dropped an octave and was oozing anticipation.
Liv swallowed hard, well aware that her face was probably as red as a phone box. She looked him in the eye and laughed â there was no point playing coy â âMessy things.â
She picked up the packages of clothes and stood up from her desk, walking with purpose over to her work bench. She could still feel his eyes on her, drifting down her back and pausing briefly on her backside. She grinned in victory. She didnât know what it was with this man that made her feel like a naughty twenty something again, but she was enjoying every minute of it.
He made a noise in his throat that she wasnât sure whether it was a sigh or him clearing it.
âI should get going Liv, before Bull comes looking for me.â He stood up and straightened his jacket.
âMmm Iâm sure you have boring legal work to do, you canât stay and play mad scientist all day.â
He smirked and raised and eyebrow, watching her as she put on her lab coat and gloves. âIs that what you do in here really? Pretend youâre helping us, but really youâre plotting to take over the world with chemical warfare?â
Liv laughed and waved the material she had just taken out of the bag at him. âThatâs right, you caught me. And Iâm starting this experiment with these ⌠lovely semen stained jeans ⌠mmmâ they both pulled a face and laughed.
âWell, itâs a starting point.â He made his way towards the door, but stopped in the doorway. âYou know where to find me if you need anything ⌠or a sidekick ⌠if you can steal me away from Bull.â
âI do. See you later Benny. Go, before I get you or I in trouble.â
He nodded and left the lab, but ducked his head back in a couple of seconds later.
âOh and Liv âŚâ
Liv looked up from her task, and smiled as she saw him grinning at her.
âYou look good in a white coat.â And with that he was gone, not even leaving her time to reply.
She swore her face was going to split in half with how wide she was smiling.

âGood god, what are those?â Liv asked Cable, her mouth hanging open a little as she took in the black and white photograph on the cyber whizzâs screen.
âI know, theyâre racy, right?â Cable agreed. Flipping through the files to show the rest of the set to Liv, whoâs eyebrows were climbing ever higher into her hairline. âI found them in the snapchat ether.â
âYup, see his monogram, here?â cable pointed to the little embroidery on all the pillows.
Liv rolled her eyes and made a noise of disgust, âugh rich kids.â She studied the photo closer and furrowed her brow in confusion. âThatâs not Alyssa Yang. The bone structure is incorrect, and those are definitely not Alyssaâs nails, she bites. Any idea who it is?â
Cable shrugged âI think Bull has an idea. Brandon says theyâre not even sexual. Boss is convinced heâs lying about something.â
âWell, he canât deny he had sex, and a lot of it. Thereâs enough semen on his clothes I swear I could fill a pint glass.â
Cable wrinkled her nose âThatâs gross.â
Liv nodded, âMhmm, I never said my job was glamourous.â She handed Cable a USB drive that sheâs plotted all the DNA strands from the clothing and samples onto, as well as the skin and blood samples from Alyssaâs body. âCould you do me a favour when you have a minute? I know youâll do it ten times faster than I will.â
Cable shrugged and popped the USB into her pocket âSure, what can I do for you?â
âCan you match these DNA markers to any records or files or strands available on the internet? Iâve only got access to the police and medical databases.â
âSure, no problem Liv, Iâll get on it for you later.â
âThanks honey.â Liv squeezed her shoulder and looked towards the glass wall that was the front of Bennyâs office. It was empty, and the lights were off. Her brow furrowed, he hadnât even stopped into the lab to say good night.
Cable caught Livâs gaze and smirked knowingly. âYou looking for Benny?â
âoh, uh, no, not especially.â Liv felt the skin of her cheeks burn in a hot blush as she tried to cover her disappointment. âis it really that obvious.â
âHe and Bull got pulled out to have a late meeting with Rutledge and Peters. Theyâll be out pretty late. They kind of left in a hurry.â
Liv hummed an acknowledgment and looked at her phone. the happy face of her puppy on her background told her it was 6 30 pm. âthereâs nothing much else I can do with my day, so Iâm going to go back to my hotel, have a glass of wine and read a book in the bath I think. Will you tell them I said bye when they get back.
Cable nodded and turned back to her screen. âSure thing. Sounds like a solid plan, enjoy it.â
Liv gave her shoulders a little squeeze. âNight Cable. Thank you. And that you for running those for me.â
The younger woman smiled warmly. âNo problem, good night.â
Liv made sure her bag was on her shoulder and left TAC, heading into the elevator and out into the buzzing New York night.
 ****
Liv had decided she was going to have a relaxing evening. Sheâd ordered some fancy chicken dish for dinner and a bottle of white wine, along with the chilled chocolate mousse for dessert. It was an evening for decadence. The only thing she was missing, she thought to herself, as she lowered into a hot bubble bath with the bathroom lights dimmed to a warm golden glow, was having someone there to share it with her.
She eased into the water and shut her eyes, imagining that she was not alone. That her back was pressed against Bennyâs hard chest and her head rested on his shoulder. In her mind he was drawing delicate little circles on the flesh of her arms with his fingertips, and murmuring things in her ear, occasionally pressing kisses into her hair, and soothing her into a relaxing sleep.
Liv woke with a bit of a start as her email tone chimed loudly from the other room. She grumbled and pulled herself out of the tub. Sheâd been enjoying that little fantasy. She wrapped a towel around herself and sat cross legged on her bed, pulling her laptop to her.
She opened the email from Cable.
âHi Liv, Sorry itâs taken a little bit of time for me to search them up for you.â
Liv glanced at the clock in the corner of her screen. 21:44. It hadnât taken her long at all. It would have taken Liv easily a day to search the information Cable had in a couple of hours.
âIâve managed to match up the semen from the trousers and tests. Iâve packaged the results up for you. Iâm still running the matches from Alyssaâs body. Hope this helps a bit! C đâ
Liv opened the attached documents and scanned her eyes through the matching results. As she thought, the majority of the DNA strands found in the semen from the tubes, Alyssaâs body and the clothing matched Brandon Peterâs DNA profile. But one set of DNA stood out massively, and Livâs jaw dropped. The matching profile could be a huge break in the case.
The revelation completely made Liv forget her state of undress, the towel being the only thing covering her naked body, as she dialled the first number she thought to call in a video call.
The phone rang for a few seconds, and Liv bit her lip while she waited for Benny to answer.
After a couple of rings he answered the video call. He looked exhausted, but still well turned out. His hair was messy, and heâs swapped his three piece suit for a deep blue work out t shirt that clung to his muscles. Beads of sweat lined his forehead and black gloves covered his hands as he waved at her. Sheâd clearly caught him in the middle of a work out.
âBenny, Iâm so sorry, am I disturbing you?â
He smirked at her and took a seat on a near by chair. She caught a glimpse of the surrounds around him and realised he was still at the office.
âDressed like that? Not at all.â
Livâs eyes widened in horror as she realised she was still only in a towel.
âHoly fuck. Iâm sorry I should have put clothes on. I can do that and call you back?â
âAnd spoil my fun?â He was grinning at her, enjoying the situation. âWhatâs up Liv? You look frazzled.â
âBenny, I need you to come here, Iâve had an unexpected breakthrough.â
WARNING!! this drabble is really quite explicit! Sorry for all of you waiting on my next Benny installment, it is on itâs way, but i got this bug in my brain and had to write it. You have been warned though, this is EXPLICIT!
âMikey, you did what?â You looked at your boyfriend, astounded.
He was hastily packing the stuff from his desk into a box, he hardly had time to look up at you.
âI quit.â He laughed a high pitch laugh, and stopped his hasty movements, fingers gripping the side of the box until his knuckles turned white. âI quit. He was hounding me, kicking my ass about the ECMO, and budgets, and I knew. Right there, I knew.â
Michael looked at you with his dark eyes round and intense, a fire burning inside them youâd never seen before.
âI lost a piece of my brain Y/N, I could have lost who I am, I could have lost my kids ⌠I could have lost you. I didnât go through all that to push paper, and work somewhere where everyone hates me.â
You opened your mouth to correct him that not everyone on the night shift hated him. But he hushed you, coming around the desk and placing a finger against your lips. You could feel his warmth radiating from his proximity, and could almost feel his body thrum with the adrenaline.
âYou donât count here baby, youâre the exception.â
Reaching out, you wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him in closer to you, so your foreheads are touching and your fingers link behind his head, nestling in his perfect dark hair.
âYou underestimate yourself. People donât know the right side of you. This side.â You kiss his nose daintily, and he gives you a small smile, bringing his arms up to wrap around your hips.
âActuallyâ you purr, laying kisses along his jaw line, âI havenât even seen this side of you. Proud, assertive ⌠dominant.â He chuckled breathily, enjoying your kisses and pressing you flush against him.
âWhat is it they say? You only get one life, live it your way. Iâm done with being the asshole. Done with missing out on important things because I need to be at my desk. Iâm doing things my way.â
You bit your lip at the conviction in his voice. Youâd always had a thing for anything forbidden or authoritarian, and the commanding tone in his voice was making your insides do a somersault.
âMmm I like this side of you.â
Michael grinned, mischief glinting in his eyes. He looked like was up to something.
âYou know what I want done my way, right now?â with gentle movements he backed you up, so the back of your knees collided with the seat of a chair.
You bit your lip, giving a great show of pretending not to think, while your fingernails scratched lightly at the hair at the nape of Michaelâs neck, a spot you knew drove him crazy. âNo, tell me?â your voice was husky and thick.
âYou. Right now, right âŚâ he lightly pushed you, so you sat back in the chair, he crouched and leaned over you, arms trapping you in between the chair and his body, and your faces so close together you could feel your breath mingling on your cheeks. âHereâ
You had never seen Michael so reckless. He was a stickler for the rules on the shift. He was bubblier and lighter hearted outside of the hospital, but technical he was still on staff for another seven hours.
âHere?â you squeaked, breathless as he began to kiss the exposed skin of your neck, lightly tracing your pressure points and speeding up your pulse.
Michael chuckled huskily against your throat. âRight here. And now.â
You felt your skin flush and a heat starting to burn deliciously between your legs, as you pulled him up to kiss you. His soft lips were demanding, prying yours open so he could run his tongue against yours. He tasted like hazelnut coffee, his favourite.
He fumbled with your scrub top, sliding his fingers under it and delicately smoothing the skin of your torso. He found your bra and pushed the fabric up, revealing your breasts to the chill air. You gasped. Michael knelt between your legs and nuzzled at your bare skin. He took one nipple in his mouth, swirling the tip of his tongue over the raised bud and you sighed in pleasure, arching into him and knotting your fingers into his hair. He palmed the other breast with a strong hand.
âMichaelâ you moaned, your hands grasping as much of him as you could, desperate to get your body as close to him as you could. He growled against your skin in response. âMichael please âŚâ you begged, moving his hand down to the waistband of your scrub bottoms.
âBehave Y/N. weâre doing this my way, remember.â He scolded, pulling away from your nipple and glancing up at you through his lashes, eyes dark and heavy with lust. His fingers teased at the fabric, skimming across your belly button.
He tugged gently at the trousers, telling you without words to lift up your backside so he could pull them down. You willingly obliged and lifted your hips, and he pulled both them and your underwear down in a swift precise movement. His fingers indented the soft flesh of your thighs as he bent and kissed the sensitive skin there. His breath ghosted over the red hot flesh of your sex that had become sensitive in his teasing, already damp and waiting for his attention.
âDo you know how long Iâve wanted to do this? Lock us in my office and make you cum til your knees are weak and you canât concentrate for the rest of the night?â his voice was whisper against your thigh.
The darkly dirty words made you clench and long for his contact more.
âI couldnât do it before. I can do what I want now.â He sat up straight and looked at you, flustered and red cheeked, your freed breasts heaving with every staggered breath. Slipping a hand into the juncture between your legs he ran a finger between your folds, deliberately slowly. You gasped at the contact and tipped your head back, and he gently flicked against your nub.
Pleased by your reaction, Michael smiled one of his trademark smiles displaying the dimples you loved so much. Leaning forward he captured your lips in an intense, passionate kiss, and expertly slid a finger inside you. You moaned against his lips and gripped his shoulders as sparks flew behind your eyes. He began to move his finger, pumping a steady rhythm into your body.
âMichael.â You gasped, pulling away from him for a second, he looked please with himself and the way your body responded and tightened around his finger. Biting your lip, you looked down at where your bodies connected.
âLook at me, Y/N.â he commanded softly, enjoying the little cry that erupted from your throat when he entered a second finger. You did look at him. You looked deep into those brown eyes that were so dark with lust they were almost black. You could feel the familiar heat and tension starting to form in the pit of your stomach. That white hot coil, that brought with it the promise of a release.
âI love you.â He murmured, looking deep into your eyes. He loved watching as your body succumbed to the pleasure he was doling out to you; he admired your wild look and the beads of sweat appearing on your skin, and consumed every little whimper you made as if it was his life force.
âI ⌠Love⌠you too.â You managed to pant out as you bucked your hips to meet his hand movements, you could feel the coil spiralling as your walls tightened around his fingers.
You tried not to cry out too loud as your wave of orgasm hit you, hard, but it was difficult seeing the happy and triumphant look on Michaelâs face. âOhhh my god, Michael! Fuck!â you cursed as your weakened body collapsed back into the chair.
He chuckled a little and withdrew his hand, wrapping his arms around you and resting his head on your sweat slicked chest. He looked happy and contented, a wide, killer smile present on his cheeks.
You tried to calm your breath, and ran your fingers lovingly through his perfectly styled hair. The pair of you sat in silence for a moment, just enjoying being so close with each other.
âMichael Ragosa, I have never loved you so much as I do today. Iâm so proud of you.â Your words were still a little shaky, but you meant every one on them, as you took his face in your hands and smoothed your thumbs over his jaw. He turned his face and lightly kissed your palm.
The two of you slowly made your way to your feet, and Michael helped you redress, placing little opportune kisses where he could on your body before covering it with the red fabric.
âYou have no idea how good it feels to finally do what you want to do.â He murmured into your hair, pulling you in close and leaning his head against yours.
âThe world is your oyster now Mikey,â you said breathing in the scent of his aftershave.
He nodded âA whole, new world.â
@reelovesbennycolonâ hopefully this helps relieve your boredom
Briefcases and Bloodsplatter: Chapter 3: How do you catch a cold? Benny Colon x OC
Hereâs the third installment, sorry itâs taken so long to get out, itâs a crazy time to be part of the NHS, i just want wait to get my life back to normal. at least I can indulge elsewhere! please enjoy!!
TAC was quiet when Liv finally tip toed her way into the office.
Screen panels were all lit up, but there was no one to be found anywhere. Maybe I missed a meeting? Surely Benny would have told me? She tried to shrug off the nagging feeling of guilt from her little over sleeping blunder and made her way to the lab.
Now she knew where almost everyone was. There was a big crowd standing outside, peering in to the big glass windows. Danny and Chunk stood guard at either side of the door.
âMorning sleepyhead. Iâm glad youâre here, I need a coffee.â Chunk greeted her with a warm smile and a small side hug.
âMorning.â Liv looked at the cluster of people and raised her eyebrows, âWhatâs with the audience?â
âA delivery for you arrived about 15 minutes ago.â Danny waved her and through the door and Liv cautiously poked her head inside the lab.
Inside, on a new marble autopsy table, sat a silver box, large enough to hold a human. Alyssa Yang to be precise. The room had been completely renovated into a makeshift mortuary, bottles of chemicals lined the desks and sinks at either end of the table. Everything looked completely up to standard, which was impressive for a makeshift job.
âDo you guys have little building elves in here or something?â She asked, both Danny and Chunk laughed.
âNever underestimate TAC ⌠or Marissa.â Chunk chuckled.
Danny started to usher the crowd of people away, reminding them that they had work to do before everyone gets back. She toughed a switch on a panel beside the door and the glass instantly frosted, giving the lab the illusion of privacy.
âSo where is everyone, other than you guys, obviously?â
They entered the lab and closed the door behind them. Chunk and Danny lingered by her desk while Liv checked through the paperwork and ID tags attached to the box.
âItâs Voire Dire day, theyâre at the courthouse. They should be back in an hour or so, they left at 8.â
Livâs dark eyes flicked up the clock on the wall, the hands pointed out that it was 9:40, clear as day. Shit! I didnât realise it was that late. Bull is going to fire me before Iâve even started to help, and I was just beginning to like it here.
Her face obviously betrayed her thoughts, Chunk laughed a little under his breath and smiled at her warmly. âItâs ok, we all get it. Youâve come a long way, youâve barely been here 2 days, and we kept you out pretty late.â
âBullâs going to kill me isnât he?â the awful feeling in the pit of her stomach clenched.
The stylist grinned mischievously âNo, donât worry, Benny covered for you expertly.â His eyes sparkled. âOur boy seems to have a bit of a soft spot for you. Did he get you home safe?â
Danny rolled her eyes, but smiled at the banter. âIâll go get us all coffee.â
âThank you!â Liv welcomed the distraction, but Chunk was having none of it, installing himself in her desk chair.
âIâm waiting.â
âHmm?â Liv had hoped itâd be the end of the conversation, as she started to wash her hands and gather her protective gear.
âBenny. He got you back ok? You were a little light headed when the pair of you fell into the cab.â
She looked up at him, eyes wide. âHow much of a tit did I make of myself? Go on, I can take it.â
Chunk laughed heartily and shook his head, âYou didnât mama, You were just dog tired.â
âMmm everything was a bit of a blur.â It wasnât. She remembered everything.
In the cab theyâd talked about their families in hushed tones, their heads bowed together, little fingers linked on the seat between them. When they had pulled up to the hotel, heâd told the driver to hold and left everything in the back seat. Theyâd waited for the lift, but got bored quickly and had ended up racing each other up the four flights of stairs both collapsing at the top, out of breath and laughing uncontrollably. The normally immaculate Benny was showing signs of wear and tear, the longer pieces of his hair had started to move from their perfectly coiffed position, a few sections dangling in his eyes. When they finally made it to her door, heâd given her a hug, his smell of sandalwood and leather engulfing her, an kissed her on the cheek bidding her good night. And then she had the dream.
Her cheeks fought a flare of heat as she remembered her dream about him.
âHe was very sweet though.â
Chunk nodded. âHeâs the king of chivalry.â
Danny re-entered the room clutching three cups of coffee. All talk of Bennyâs charming traits died off. Liv had begun to feel a kinship with Chunk, like he was becoming her unofficial work brother, but she knew Danny preferred to keep personal life stuff just that, personal.
âCoffee. Weâve gotta clear out of here, weâre under instructions from boss man. Good luck Liv. Youâve got until 1, and then the body has to go the prosecution.â
âThanks Danny.â Live gave them a last smile before strapping her mask on. âThatâs plenty of time.â
They left her alone in the room, Chunk shooting her a wink on his way out the door.
Fully dressed in protective wear, Liv lifted the lid and sides off the box, exposing Alyssaâs battered body. She ran a finger long the mottled skin of her arm. âIâll try and be as gentle as I can honey, youâve seen enough pain.â
 ***
âYou must have spent a fortune on these nails.â Liv said as she slid a swab under the long, finally manicured nails. âThey are very pretty, I used to make sure my nails were always nice too, before I started doing my job.â She placed the swab in a tube, and noted the number in her log. âThey tend to frown on you having painted nails when you work in a crime lab.â She repeated the same process on Alyssaâs other hand.
âI think itâs got something to do with possible evidence contamination.â
Liv smiled hearing Bennyâs voice, and looked up from Alyssaâs body, he was looking Dapper in a steel grey three piece suit with a white shirt and cobalt blue tie. His olive skin was perfect and showed absolutely no signs of their late night. He shot her a dazzling smile, his dark brown eyes alight.
âThatâs exactly right,â Liv looked back down at the body. Sheâd finally examined all she could without performing a full autopsy, which would have been deemed unnecessary, she was trying to find evidence that Brandon Peters couldnât have been her murderer, not checking underlying conditions. âAlthough I donât think youâd have needed to think about that in your line of work, would you. Iâd have chosen another career path if I was you though, drugs are dangerous.â
âYou know, I think I used to watch a tv show where the medical examiner talked to their âŚ.â He trailed off, not wanting to be insensitive, but waved his hand in the direction of her body.
âI think I know the one. Itâs a common thing, I think it keeps us sane. And gives us a bit of purpose.â
He nodded, still keeping his distance from her and the table. She laughed lightly.
âSheâs not going to bite you Benny, and neither will I, unless you ask nicely.â
Bennyâs eyes widened and his eyebrows leapt into his hairline for a few seconds while he processed what sheâs just said. He grinned, and took a step closer to them. âOh, Iâll be sure to.â
Liv was so glad the mask covered all but her eyes, as she flushed a hot pink and her belly twisted, she bit her lip, hidden under the fabric. A little snippet of him, gliding his tongue across her collar bone from her dream the night before exploded into her head. Luckily she wasnât holding anything in her hands, or sheâd have dropped it. She closed her eyes briefly and took a steadying breath, when she opened them again he was smirking.
She tried desperately to clear the cloud of her mind.
âHow was voire dire?â
Benny cleared his throat and rubbed a hand over his eyes. âStressful. Rutledge is an asshole that thinks he knows best. Weâve got a good jury though. Should be sympathise with our client. Canât ask for much more really.â He stretched his legs out in front of him, leaning on her desk and crossed his ankles. He watched Liv as she busied herself washing down Alyssaâs body, and closing the silver transport case. âWeâve got a good mirror jury too. Hopefully itâll help.â
âYou know,â Live said as she fiddled with the clasps on the case, looking up at him briefly through her eyelashes. âUntil I started working closer with court cases, I had no idea voire dire was a thing. Iâve never seen it done. I donât know what Iâd say, if I was doing it.â
âItâs all word play really. Structure the questions so they seem benign but get what you want from the underlying answers. Bull is very good at crafting the right questions.â
Liv nodded and started peeling away her protective clothing, revealing her flattering dark blue jeans and black blouse with its matching camisole. Sheâd picked the outfit deliberately. It showed off just the right amount of flesh and curve to be enticing, but not too exposing that nothing would be left to the imagination. She grinned internally as Benny subtly looked her up and down with praising eyes.
âWhat kind of questions?â
âWhy do you catch a cold?â He took a deep breath, but the words of his next question almost ran together âDo you want to come for lunch with me.â
Liv looked at him over her shoulder while she washed and dried her hands.
âThatâs a strange question. The cold one ⌠not the lunch one.â
Benny shrugged. âIt worked though. And would you? The lunch. Not the cold.â He gave her a winning smile.
She felt like a teenager, being asked to the prom by the boy she fancied. âLunch would be good.â She was impressed with herself. Her babbling was under control, and her confidence with him was soaring.
âPerfect. Are you ready now? Thereâs a really nice Italian place just down the block.â
Liv moved the box of tubes into the fridge, and grabbed her handbag.
âItalian sounds great. Weâll just need to leave the keys with Marissa so the prosecution can collect her at one.â
They left the lab and Liv locked the door behind her. Benny leaned against the glass wall next to her, their arms touching, the proximity welcomed by both of them. He watched her with those intense eyes, a playful smile on his lips.
âSo tell me, why would you catch a cold?â his voice was hushed, so only the two of them would hear it.
She felt that unfamiliar wave of confidence crash into her again, and liv chose to embrace it. She looked back at him, her eyes shining with mischief.
âMe? Iâd catch a cold from kissing in the rain.â She shrugged it off as if the answer was the most obvious thing in the world, and started to walk down the corridor, leaving Benny, who was frozen in his place, eyes wide.

Just a quick one, written on my breaks if itâs rubbish! :) trying to find a creative outlet in the corona virus chaos. Itâs sort of inspired by the vicar of dibley episode. hopefully youâll enjoy.
As I looked at myself in the mirror, I knew I was making a mistake. A sick feeling swirled in the pit of my stomach as I gazed at my reflection. Everything else was perfect. My pearly white dress, the almost sheer veil with its gorgeous diamante head dress, nestled in the complicated up do it had taken Chunk nearly two hours to perfect. He had worked so hard to make me look flawless and beautiful, but I just felt empty and cold.Â
Marissa and Danny were laughing and joking behind me, resplendent in their shimmering satin dresses, a lovely, warm peach colour. When I glanced in the mirror, Cable was watching me. Her face as serious as mine. "He'll be here." She said quietly, her eyes meaningful. I felt sick, obviously it showed on my hands. "He will."
I sat next to Cable and put my chin in my hands. "I think Iâm making a mistake Cable. Or is it just cold feet?" I hissed it quietly enough that the other two girls didn't notice, too wrapped up in themselves.  "Sean is nice, and he treats me so well, gives me everything I need. Except . . ." I sighed, the words sticking in my throat. "Except the butterflies and the weak knees."
Cable fiddled with the hem of her darker dress. "They say marriage doesn't really keep those things anyway."
I shrugged. "I don't think I ever did. But he's safe. And he loves me. So much."
"But" Cable eyed me seriously "not as much as you love Benny?"
Even hearing his name made my blood flare with heat and my tummy squirm.Â
"Benny is . . . Special." I blinked back the tears I felt burning in my eyes. "What happened with you two?" Cable asked.Â
"Our paths never lined up like they should have. We always reconnected but we managed to constantly slip away from eachother. And then he met Grace, and I took a backseat in his life. So I met Sean, and here we are."
"He still checks in about you though. He makes sure he's part of every conversation about you. He makes sure Bull sends every interesting case your way."
I looked at Cable, I could feel a tear running down my cheek. "Is she still in the picture?" She knew she shouldn't ask, but her heart was dying to know.Â
Cable didn't answer me, but took a sip from her champagne. "What are you going to do"
I took a deep breath and swallowed hard. Benny was happy with Grace. I couldnât ask him to walking away from being happy.
âIâm going to let him be happy. And Iâm not going to walk away. I have been happy with Sean, I still can be. But Iâll always love Benny. I Donât think I could ever get that piece of my heart back from him. But heâs happy, and I canât walk away from a chance at being happy. Every girl has a fantasy life. Itâll just have to stay as that.â I wrung my hands and sniffed back my tears, stiffening my resolve.
Cable just looked at me, unconvinced.
I stood in the doorway of the old church, with its crumbling flag stones and lines of melting candles. The unusually warm British wind blew my veil around and washed comfortingly over my cheeks. I had one had clutching my bouquet of orange roses and white lilies, and the other clinging on the crook of my dadâs arm for dear life.  He was smiling at me proudly, with adoration in his eyes.
âAre you ready poppet?â He whispered as she shuffled into the little lobby.
I battled the nausea that raged in my stomach and offered him the best mile I could muster.
I could see the whole of the church from where I was standing. The priest flicking through his prayer book, Sean in a jet black tux, stood at the front talking to his best man. I couldnât deny he looked handsome. He always did. Sean was a doctor and was always well put together. His blond hair was neat, and stood tall and straight, the embodiment of confidence.
I could see the congregation, my friends and family, all sat chatting between themselves in hushed tones. I could see Chunk, sat with Jason and Isabelle. Izzy. Bennyâs sister. My heart hurt just looking at her. And next to her was an empty space.
I shouldnât have been surprised, He had pretty much told me categorically that although he was happy for me (through gritted teeth and the most forced smile I had ever seen), he couldnât be there. I felt a pang of anger and despair seeing the empty seat. Let him be happy. Give yourself a chance to be loved and maybe love someone else as much.
It was now or never. I looked at my dad and nodded. âIâm ready.â
The organ started to play the wedding march and the verger signalled for me to start my walk down the aisle.
âAnd so friends and family gathered here today âŚâ I looked up at Sean, his blue eyes sparkled like the ocean as he gazed down at me lovingly. He was holding my hands as if I were made of crystal.
You can do this. Youâre half way through! I told myself, and smiled back at my husband to be, hoping the expression did not look too fake.
The priest had commanded the congregationâs attention and they were all watching the three of us avidly. I wanted to run. To kick off these ridiculous high heels Chunk had picked, and get the hell out of the church into the air.
I wanted to see him; I wanted to see Benny. I wanted to feel the strong, stable warmth of his hugs, enveloping me in his arms, wanted to feel him press kisses to my cheeks, neck and hair. I wanted to hear him say my name in every possible tone. I wanted to hear him whisper that he loved me into my ear while we sit in the bay window of his apartment reading books by moonlight again.
And most of all, I wanted it to be his hands holding mine, his smile radiating down on me, and his heated gaze full of love watching my every move as we proclaim our love to everyone we know.
I glanced once again at the empty seat, and held in a pained sob. He really wasnât there.
âIf anyone knows any just cause or impediment, for why these two should not be wedded in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace âŚâ
I held my breath. I this was a movie, this would be where heâd bust in and sweep me off my feet. I thought to myself. The silence was deafening. It crushed any small sliver of hope that Iâd had.
Well thatâs it then.
âVery well thenâ the priest began, opening his prayer book to find the recital of vows.
 âWAIT!â
I knew that voice. I, and the whole of the church turned back towards the doors.
The love of my life, Benny Colon was, stood at the end of the aisle, arms crossed over his chest and staring determinedly.
I could feel my heart beating in my chest, faster and faster.
He looked so good, dressed in a black three piece suit with a dark blue shirt. His hair was perfect.
âDo you have something to say, sir?â the priest asked, looking shocked.
Sean dropped my hands and rounded on Benny, his tall frame towing over him. Benny stood his ground and didnât falter, other than his dark eyes quickly meeting mine.
âWhat is the meaning of this?!â Sean basically screamed.
âWell,â Benny shrugged and put his hands in his pockets, turning on the charm that he so frequently used with juries. âI thought I was ok with Y/N marrying you, after all, I was in a relationship myself, as you well know. But do you know what I couldnât get out of my head? That I was letting you marry the love of my life. That it should have been me.â
He looked a me over Seanâs shoulder, a passion filled glint in his eye. âIt always should have been me. I knew it from the day I met you. I knew one day itâd be me meeting you at the end of the aisle, I knew it would be me lounging on a beach with you for our honeymoon. Me holding your hand and loving you when we have a baby.â
I felt my cheeks heat and tears poured out of my eyes, I left the alter, running my way to him. Sean moved out of my way as I came passed, looking beyond hurt and deflated.
âI love youâ Benny said to me as he caught my face between his hands, smoothing his thumbs over my cheekbones. âI love you too much to let you go.â
I smiled, looking into his beautiful eyes, and sniffed back the happy tears, clinging on to his lapels. I wanted to be close to him, to breathe in every little detail of his scent. âI love you too. My heart was breaking, I was barely keeping it together. Itâs always been you Benjamin Colon, always.â
Benny smiled at me, showing off his pearly white teeth, and placed his soft lips against mine, in what started off as a chaste kiss, but quickly deepened to something more passionate.
Sean who was watching us in disbelief made a strangled noise. Benny and I pulled apart and looked at him, both of us feeling guilty for his side of the outcome.
âIâm sorry, I canât let you have my life.â Benny offered, wrapping his arms around my waist.
Sean looked at me in desperation âReally, Y/N, is this what you want? I thought we were happy?!â
I felt terrible for him, I did, but I also felt immense relief.
âit really is. Iâm sorry Sean I really am. I would have been happy with you, and you would have loved me, but my heart âŚâ I leaned my head against Bennyâs and let me fingers glide softly across his jaw line. âHas always belonged to Benny. I would have always been happy, but never complete. Iâm sorry. Please try and understand.â
âNo!â Sean spat and stormed out of the church following after him, throwing Benny and I dirty looks, and chorusing his name. The heavy wooden doors banged shut behind him.
Silence filled the church as Benny and I took a second to regroup and hugged each other.
âWho doesnât love a wedding right?!â Snickered the voice of Jason Bull, breaking the tension.
Just a little ramble I wrote for the prompt : âAm I your lockscreen?â âYou werenât supposed to see that.â
Lilly yawned as she followed Benny into the departure lounge of the airport, there were kids running around all over the place, and tired looking parents shouting at them and trying to round them as various boarding calls were heard over the loud speaker.
She knew sheâd regret agreeing to go to Dallas with him for Thanksgiving this year. Not being from America it was never a big deal to her, sheâd normally just spend the few days off curled on her sofa with a glass of wine and a good book. Perfect peace for a couple of days.
But when he and Erin broke up heâd basically begged her to come with him, as his family were expecting him to bring someone. Heâd batted his big dark eyes at her and pouted. He knew it was basically impossible for her to resist him when he looked at her like that.
âUgh fine.â Sheâs said with a playful grin and lightly smacked his chest.
âYou know theyâve always wanted to meet you.â Benny had shrugged.
âIâve no idea why.â
âYouâre important to me.â He looked at her deadly seriously. He put his hand out, seeking hers. They were alone in his office at Tac, and it was late. They sat on the floor, their backs against the leather sofa and their legs outstretched. Benny has shed his jacket, waistcoat and tie. Heâd undone the top two buttons of his shirt and rolled his sleeves up, taking the time to relax after a long and stressful day.
Lilly took a sip of the expensive scotch he had poured her, not wanting to look at him in that moment. Sheâd loved Benny since the moment she met him, the day Bull had introduced her to the team as his new PA and his gorgeous dark eyes had locked with hers. Over the last two years they had grown closer and closer, helping each other through tough family times and break ups and celebrating successes and events. There had been a few close moments where theyâd nearly become more than friends, where theyâd nearly kissed, and Lilly had wished desperately that they had.
âCome with me. Please?â He scooted closer and took her hand giving it a little squeeze. âPlus youâve never lived until youâve had my grandmotherâs pasteles.â His eyes lit up like a child and his stomach unconsciously rumbled.
âThe way to your heart really is through your stomach isnât it?â She laughed, and he shrugged with a contented look on his face.
âWhat can I say? I love as woman who can cook.â He started ticking them off on his fingers, âMy Gramma, My mother, My aunt Louise, hell, even you arenât too bad?â
She reeled back and looked at him with a mock shocked face, her hand on her heart, âNot bad? Remember that triple chocolate and caramel lava cake I made you for your birthday last year?â
He closed his eyes dreamily, and grinned, showing off his perfect white teeth and dimples, âOhhh yeah, that was good, youâre lucky I didnât propose to you, right there on the spot.â
Lilly felt a heat rush over her body and burn up her cheeks. She felt hot on the inside. Biting her lip, she gazed into the amber liquid in her glass, âMmm, it is a pity, What would you have done if Iâd said yes?â
He took a long, steady sip from his glass, looking at her over the rim with intensity deep in his eyes.
âIâd have been happy.â
âLadies and Gentlemen, we are sorry to announce a delay on American Airlines flight DA4461 to Dallas due to weather conditions. The flight will now depart at 20:30. Thank you.â
Lilly rolled her eyes and leaned on the handle of her carry on bag. Benny shrugged at her, the soft suede of his jacket stretching over his arm muscles as he did do.
How does he even look this good on flights? I look like Iâve just rolled out of a hedge somewhere. He looked impeccable as ever, tight jeans and a form fitting dark blue polo shirt.
âLooks like weâll have to wait a while, wont we?â he got himself settled in a seat, and patted the empty spot next to him, encouraging her to sit down.
She yawned and plonked herself down on the uncomfortable leather chair.
âI wish Iâd have known, I could have taken that nap.â Lilly sighed wistfully, she hadnât slept well the night before â Bull had her fielding phone calls until 5 am.
âCome hereâ he lifted his arm up and tapped his chest, encouraging her to lay her head on him. She welcomed the gesture, breathing in his unique scent â cinnamon, leather and something spicy she couldnât put her finger on. âWeâve got hours to go, try and get some sleep.â He wrapped his arm around her back and traced soothing patterns on her bare arms with his finger tips.
âI canât sleep here. There are other people around.â But the steady beat of his heart and the warmth of his body, were already comfortably lulling her, and her eye lids drooped.
âIgnore everyone else, itâs just you and me.â The last thing Lilly felt as sleep took over was Benny placing a kiss into her hair, and she smiled. She wished it was. Just him and her.
Lilly must have dozed for an hour or so before she began to stir. Her head was still cradled in the crook of Bennyâs neck and he was still holding onto her tightly, she blearily tried opening her eyes the whole way, but shut them again, unappreciative of the naked airport lights.
She was acutely aware that Benny was humming contentedly, the action giving his body a pleasurable vibration. He was staring at his phone. As Lillyâs eyes slowly came into focus, she realised what he was looking at.
There, on his home screen was a photo of them, on his birthday last year. They were both laughing into the camera, with chocolate cake smeared across their faces. He has swiped a finger full of frosting from the cake and dolloped it onto her nose. They both looked so happy.
She grinned to herself. âAm I your lock screen?â She asked him, voice still loaded with sleep.
âUh âŚâ He looked down at her coyly, his cheeks tinging a little pink âYes, but you werenât supposed to see that.â
âWe look happy.â She sat up straighter, so they were on the same level again, but she kept herself clutched tightly at his side.
He swallowed audibly, his eyes switching between her mouth and her eyes. The tension between them was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
âIâm always happy when Iâm with you.â He breathed lowly, his voice inaudible to anyone but her.
She felt the familiar heat and butterflies of being happy with him bubbling up in her belly as she looked at him. They were so close their noses were almost touching, their breath mingling on eachotherâs cheeks.
âYou make me happy too.â She reached a hand up to his jaw line and stroked her fingers over his flawless olive skin.
Benny seemed to pause for a beat, his dark chocolate eyes looked like they were hiding a raging inner battle, and then he leaned forward, softly placing his lips on hers. She smiled into the kiss, and worked her hand from his face into his hair, deepening their contact.
He pulled away and rested his forehead against hers as they both caught their breath.
Rhia, a nurse at San Antonio is enlisted to keep her boss in check after he accidentally takes MDMA, advice is given and the start of something big is kindled.Â
Rhia sighed as she reached the nursesâ station, joining in Kennyâs emergency huddle.
âSo I promised, Iâd keep this on the DL, But I think it might need some damage control.â Kenny nodded subtly over to the far wall, where Michael Ragosa was leaning. The dark-haired administratorâs shirt was untucked, the collar loose and tie barely hanging around his neck. He was staring intently at a pump of hand gel, pointing the bubbles out to anyone who was passing by; very loudly.
âHow long has he been doing that?â She asked furrowing her eyebrows. Michael Ragosa was always so straight laced. She couldnât think of a time sheâd seem him properly smile â like a cheek hurting, uncontrollable smile, and sheâd been working the night shift for six months. Theyâd had a few run ins in the recent months, their last big one had ended with him hissing at her that this was her last chance, her paperwork was about five weeks behind and sheâs forgotten to stock count the pharmacy three days before, but it was on her to do list. Sheâs tried apologising, had explained that she was only human after all, but he had reeled off that the board were unprepared to take the heat of a missed stock take and he didnât have the time or money to deal with an incompetent nurse. Sheâd been angry, shouting at him that if they werenât so low on staff she wouldnât have had to run between three trauma emergencies at the same time, and did he expect her to pull extra hours of the day out of her ass? Sheâd finished off her tirade by throwing her iced coffee at him. The brown liquid coating his fine features and soaking through his expensive looking white shirt.
Luckily she had walked away and bribed Mollie to put her finished paperwork on Ragosaâs desk for her by the end of the shift, so she could at least cling to the last vestiges of being able to save her job.
That was a fortnight ago ⌠and the last time sheâd spoken to him.
Theyâd got on well until about three months ago. Heâd made her feel comfortable and laugh during her interview. Heâd been nice enough to take an hour out of his day on her first shift to introduce her to the night shift big wigs like TC and Topher, both of whom now treated her like a member of their family, and to show her around the place, buying her a welcome cup of coffee when theyâd arrived at the food truck. In the early months heâs even made a point of stopping her for chat in the corridors, his eyes looking warm and caring as he checked how she was settling in and if she needed anything.
But over the last couple of months he had been becoming steadily more and more cold. He was being a dick, sometimes with, but mostly without reason. The only person heâd talk to without an edge in his voice was Landry. It hurt Rhia a bit to think that those nice, kind eyes that once welcomed her, now looked at her as though they were hard as stone, with no feeling behind them except annoyance and anger.
âAbout ten minutesâ Kenny said quietly, watching as their boss gently ran his fingers across the wall as if he was lovingly caressing someoneâs cheek.
âMhmm you should have seen him earlier, gazing into the ceiling mirror in admissions for a good five minutes, like a child staring into a candy store window.â Mollie agreed, closing the chart she was looking at sharply. The unexpected noise made Ragosa jump, the soles of his leather shoes actually leaving the floor, but his eyes never left the bubbles.
âIs he having a breakdown? Do I need to get a psych eval?â Rhia asked, feeling equally worried and perplexed. âI know the whole Jordan and the Christian Scientist thing is a big bundle of hell, but Iâve never seen him like that.â
Kenny chuckled and ducked his head, beckoning Rhia closer to him so he could whisper.
âNa, heâs fine. Heâs high as a kite.â
Rhiaâs eyebrows shot up into her hairline, surely she had misheard, âWhat?â
âYup, he took some aspirin from Landryâs desk, but they werenât aspirin, they were MDMA, and now heâs totally spacedâ
Mollie laughed and sauntered away âAnd making an ass of himselfâ
Rhia sighed, she had a feeling she knew what the answer would be before it even left her mouth. âIâm not even going to ask why Landry has MDMA on her desk, but what are we going to do Kenny?â
The male nurse grinned at her, his eyes sparkling with mischief. âWe arenât doing anything, Iâm needed in trauma two.â He clapped a large hand over her shoulder, âYou however are going to keep him out of trouble, Jordan is already having a hell of a night, we donât need him drawing attention too.â
Rhia shook her head and tried to back away, but Kenny caught her by the crook of her elbow, his fingers gently squeezing the joint. âOh hell no, Ken, he hates me. Iâm not doing that.â
Kenny smirked. âWho? Ragosa? That man doesnât hate you. He canât keep his damned eyes off you.â
âOh really?â Rhia pulled herself away from Kennyâs grip and crossed her arms defiantly over her chest. âWhat was all that shit he spewed at me the other week? He was so angry.â
âYouâre still here though, right? Did he even give you a disciplinary for giving him a bath in coffee?â
Kenny had a point, sheâd not heard a peep out of Ragosa since the incident, no word of apology or reprimand.
âNo.â
âExactly, the man has a sweet spot for you. Why donât you use it to help us out?â Kenny wrapped his arm around her in a one-sided hug. Rhia sighed, she didnât believe Kennyâs reasoning â Ragosa was married, sure it may be a little rocky right now, but she doubted he would be looking at her like that. She did have to admit though, she wouldnât mind if he did, really. Michael Ragosa was an attractive man, with the warmest brown eyes sheâd ever seen.
She knew sheâd get no peace for the night if she didnât agree to Kennyâs plan. âOk, but you gotta keep my back covered if we get busy.â
âSure thing! Good Luck!â Kenny nodded, grabbed a stack of files and walked away from the nursesâ station with a final chuckle at Ragosa, leaving Rhia alone.
She took a couple of deep breaths, she could do this, it was only Michael, he couldnât hurt a fly really. She made her way over to the far wall, and reached out to touch Ragosaâs shoulder. He flinched for a second, but then turned to look at her, his eyes taking a second to focus.
âRhia!â he whispered breathily, and he smiled, and actual smile. Rhia found herself smiling back, his grin was infectious.
âHey Michaelâ she opened her mouth to coax him to leave with her when he cut her off.
âYour hair, its so pretty, it always looks soft. Like silk. Can I touch it?â he didnât wait for her to answer before twining his fingers through some of her loose waves, closing his eyes to indulge in the feel of it on his skin.
âSure you can Michael. And thank you, itâs nice of you to say.â His eyes sprang open again, and he gazed at her intensely.
âIâve got many nice things to say to you.â
âIs that right?â he nodded, and fiddled with the ends of a curl. âWell, how about we go grab some water, sit in your office, and you could tell me them?â
âWaterâ he repeated again. He allowed Rhia to take his hand in hers and pull him in the direction of his office. After a couple if seconds, he threaded his warm fingers through hers, and Rhia had to stifle a smile as a warm feeling began to bubble in the bottom of her belly.
Rhia closed the door of Ragosaâs office softly behind them and lead him over to the sofa. Michael sat down like a dead weight, the furniture complaining with a loud creek. ââm not that heavyâ he mumbled. Rhia chuckled lightly and went to fill two glasses with water from the jug on his bookcase. Â She passed one to Michael, and took a mouthful of her own, stowing it safely on the floor before herself down next to him. She made herself comfortable, crossing her legs underneath her. Michael watched her movements intently, sipping from his glass.
Rhia looked up and caught his gaze, she smiled softly, but didnât say anything, he looked like he was thinking. A few moments of peaceful silence passed.
âI didnât mean it you know.â His head was hung in shame and he was looking up at her through thick, dark eyelashes. âI donât think youâre an incompetent nurse. Youâre so good at what you do.â He started counting compliments off on his fingers, avoiding Rhiaâs eyes. âYouâre kind, youâre caring. You always have a smile, people need to see that smile, itâs too beautiful to be hidden away. All the staff and patients love you. This hospital needs you, and I âŚâ he swallowed heavily âI need you too.â
Rhia stayed quiet, listening to his speech, but she took his hand in hers, squeezing his fingers lightly for comfort.
âIâm sorry for saying it all. Iâve not been handling myself well lately, I let things get on top of me. Lydia and I are getting a divorce. Sheâs been keeping my kids from me. They have to call me in secret. Do you know how painful that is?â his handsome face crumpled slightly and his eyes became red with brimming tears. He rubbed a finger gently over her knuckles. âEveryone treats me like Iâm a dick. All the time. Here and at home. Here at least itâs part of the job. Landry says I need to meet people halfway.â
He slouched forwards, shoulders pulling themselves together in an unconscious self-protection move. Rhea sighed, it looked like these thoughts had been taking chunks out of him for a while.
âI think thatâs a good idea, it shows people you care and offers them some respect. That works for both here and at home. I wonât pretend to know whatâs going on at home for you Michael, or how painful it all must be, but it canât let you turn away from being the good, caring person you are. You should be you, live your life your way, give everyone respect and treat people fairly, and unduly judge no one.â
Michael laughed and smiled at her. Another proper smile. Showing his pearly white teeth and displaying slight dimples. âIs that your key advice?â
Rhia smiled back warmly. âIt certainly is.â Michael nodded. He pulled his hands away and rubbed at his eyes.
âDo you want to know a secret?â he leaned in, so their faces were only a foot apart. His warm breath brushed cross her cheeks and Rhea felt her tummy clench with anticipation. His beautiful dark eyes held hers. He smelled like expensive aftershave, mint and coffee. She swallowed thickly and nodded, her words leaving her at their proximity.
âI always wanted to be a doctor, you know, spend my life doing something to make other peoplesâ lives better. I wanted to be good, beautiful Rhia. I wanted to be good, just like you.â He lightly touched his finger to the nip of her nose and gave her another heart-breaking smile.
âWhy didnât you?â She breathed, her brain clouded. He shuffled closer to her and put his lips next to her ear, his hand resting on her forearm.
âI canât see well enough, my eyes are deteriorating, I went with the next best thing. Iâve been waiting for something to push me to get surgery, something worth me facing my fear. I think I found it.â He pulled away from her, and watched her with sparkling dark eyes.
Rhia smiled and cupped his face in her hands. âI think you should be you. Do what you want to do.â
Michael nodded, and slid the tip of his tongue across his bottom lip, his eyes flicking between her eyes and rosy lips. His brows furrowed for a second, before smoothing out again. Clearly dealing with a inner battle. âYou know what Iâd like to do, right now?â his voice held a bubbling excitement
Rhia laughed, âWhat would you like to do right now?â
Michael got to his feet and took both Rhiaâs hands in his, pulling her off the sofa with surprisingly controlled strength for someone that was rolling heavily on ecstasy. âI want to dance. Come on. I know where we can dance.â
Rhia smiled and laughed, she let him lead her out of the office and into the courtyard where half the night shift were taking their breaks. A rhythmic Latino beat poured out of the speakers and filled the night air.
Michael, not caring about all the eyes on him, started to dance, arms in the air and hips swaying to the music. Unable to control her laugh or her smile that was mirroring Michaelâs Rhia accepted his outstretched hand when it was offered, and tried to forget her surroundings.
Ragosa spun her around and expertly helped her with every twist and turn. She laughed with him, and breathed in the fresh many scent of his aftershave every time she came up flush against his body.
âRhia!â Rhia vaguely caught someone saying her name, trying to pull her out of her and Michaelâs personal moment. âRhia!â
The voice belonged to Topher, who stood watching the two with his eyebrows raised. Rhia nodded at her friend and placed her hands firmly on Ragosaâs chest.
âMichael stop, stop.â She coaxed, and he stopped, perplexed, watching Topher over her shoulder.
âYes Topher, what can I do for you?â she asked trying to catch her breath.
âKenny says youâre needed for an emergency assistance in Trauma three ⌠if thatâs not disrupting your night?â he grinned at her.
Rhia looked at Ragosa who looked like a kicked puppy, his dark eyes sad. She gave his hand a squeeze. âIâll be back, duty calls. Keep yourself out of mischief Mikey.â Rhia smiled and nodded at Topher as she passed him, âCheers Toph, have a good break, weâll talk later.â
âOh yes we will, youâve got some explaining to do!â the older man shouted back as he made his way to the food truck.
Rhia pushed through people to get to the hospital doors, but stopped as she pushed them open. She watched as Michael continued to dance on his own, without a care in the world. âWooh! Topher!! This is my jam!!â he yelled to the doctor over the music. Topher looked over at Rhia who laughed and shrugged going inside.
****
Rhia hadnât seen Ragosa since she left him out in the courtyard, sheâd figured heâd called it a night and gone home early, so she slung her rucksack over her shoulder and made her way out of the locker room and headed towards the entry doors to the ER department.
To her pleasant surprise she found Michael waiting for her, leaning against a gurney. He had cleaned himself up, back to his usual smart standard, and his eyes were once again bright and clear. He shot her one of his dazzling smiles and waited for her to approach.
âHey, youâre looking good, how are you feeling?â she asked, placed herself next to him on the gurney, they were so close their shoulders rubbed against each other. He looked at her through his dark lashes.
âMuch better, I feel some ⌠clarity.â He looked down at his toes. âmy divorce is coming through, I worked out with Lydia that I can see my kids. And I decided to get the surgery.â He took a deep breath a looked up at her, his brow furrow free and open. âThank you so much for tonight and everything you did for me. Thank you for listening. For being there. For indulging me. It means a lot.â
He reached his hand out and grabbed Rhiaâs giving it a squeeze. âIâm starting again. Itâs a new chapter.â
Rhia smiled at him, her cheeks flushing. She squeezed his hand back. âItâs a pleasure Michael, Iâm always here, if you ever need me.â
He breathed out a little chuckle and cupped her cheek in his hand. âI feel I might always need you.â
Her cheeks burned with a blush and Rhia bit her lip through a smile that threatened to split her cheeks. âWould you like to come and grab a cup of coffee with me? One that we can drink, and wont end with it ruining my favourite shirt?â
Rhia laughed and squeezed his hand tightly in hers. âIâm really sorry about that. I should have apologised sooner.â
Ragosa waved his hand nonchalantly with a grin. âNever mind about that. So ⌠coffee?â
Rhia gave a sigh and leaned in pressing a kiss against his soft cheek. She liked how his skin felt under hers. âRight now, I think you need some rest.â She gathered her things and headed to the door. She turned back to look at him. He looked dejected and forlorn. âBut let me know when your divorce comes through, then Iâll hold you to that coffee.â
His face brightened and she waved, blowing him a quick kiss, âHave a good morning, Mikey.â

Briefcases and Bloodspatter Benny Colon x OC Chapter 2.5: Dreams

This mini chapter is 2.5 because some people are adverse to naughties, if itâs not for you, skip over this chapter, and carry on the love story in chapter 3.
The tiles of the shower cubicle was cold on Oliviaâs skin as her bare back slammed against them, but she paid no mind the to slight chill, her eyes were scrunched up tightly shut, and her head tipped back, exposing her throat to the warmth of his open kisses. A deft tongue was dragged sensually up the column of her neck, lips finally coming to her ear. His dark hair tickled her cheeks and his big, strong hands held her wrists in place above her head.
âI swear Iâve wanted to do that since you walked into the office.â He growled; his voice was barely above a husky whisper.
He nipped lightly at the flesh of her ear lobe and pressed hot kisses down her neck, twirling his tongue over her pulse point. If her heart wasnât beating fast enough already, she swore it had just doubled.
âBennyâ she cooed, letting him assault her skin. She tangled her fingers into his perfectly styled dark hair, pulling gently on the longer sections.
âMmm?â He hummed, pulling away from her for a second, but still long enough for Olivia to whine at the loss, her body felt cold without him pressed up against her. He switched the water on, and after a split second the waterfall shower above her head started to cascade down. The feel of the splashing added a whole new sensation to her already hyper stimulated body and she let out a little cry, plastering her hands flat on the wall behind her to ground herself.
Hearing the noise, Benny came back to her and cupped her face in his strong hands, tilting her head up. He took a beat to just look at her, eyes full of intensity and want. She did the same to him, trying to keep her composure as the water washed over his dark hair, moving some of the longer strands forward, they threatened to get in his eyes but he refused to stop looking at her, as if he was a starving man and she was a feast.
The droplets rippled over his smooth olive skin and bulging muscle. She bit her lip, admiring the strong physique that was usually covered by the impeccable three piece suits. âsuch a wasteâ She mused to herself, as she dug her nails into the soft sinew of his back, her long fingernails leaving long, angry red streaks across the perfect surface.
He hissed in a mix of pleasure and pain, and closed his eyes.
âKiss meâ She begged, trying not to sound to needy, but she wanted his contact now, more than anything.
âIâm sorry, what?â He smirked, teasing her. He grinned devilishly.
âKiss me. Please Bennyâ She begged again. Her dark eyes wide and pleading with lust.
He did just that, without missing a beat. His soft lips crashed onto hers in a heated kiss. She softened into the kiss and indulged in the heavenly feeling of his skilled tongue swirling against hers.
He broke away from her lips and began to trail kisses down her body, dropping to his knees before her. He gripped her hips tightly and she weaved her fingers through his hair and worked his way down her collar bone to her chest.
He looked up at her cheekily, and flicked his tongue over her nipple. She shuddered at the feeling moaned. He took the bud between his lips and sucked.
âHoly fuck, Bennyâ She half breathed, half cried in pleasure. âBenny!â
âWhatâs up Liv?â She swore she heard it. It was Bennyâs voice, but he was still on his knees before her, mouth too occupied to be forming the words she could hear. But it was definitely his voice.
âLiv are you ok?â There it was again âŚ
Olivia Byrne woke up with a start, her skin flushed a deep pink and beaded with sweat. The loose hotel sheets were tangled around her legs and the pillows were askew, as if she had been involved in the passionate encounter she had dreamed of. Her breathing was shallow and her knees were still jelly like.
It had felt so real. So intimate. Like he had really been there, hands and tongue all over her body. Her sex throbbed at the memory.
âLiv? Speak to me âŚâ Bennyâs deep tones brought her back to reality, and she snatched her phone off the night stand.
âBennyâ even his name felt like honey dripping off her tongue. âIâm ok.â
He chuckled lowly, the rumble stirring something deep in her loins. âYou sure there, sweetheart?â
âMmhmmâ apparently sheâd forgotten how to use words, which was a stark contrast to her usual babbling.
âSo did you call me for anything specific? Or did you just want to talk to me?â He laughed, back to being flirty. She must have called out his name in her dream and her phone took the liberty of calling him. âdamn technologyâ she thought to herself.
Olivia wondered if he was this flirty with a lot of women, he didnât exactly give off the player vibe. But itâd been an instant connection with her. Â
âI was just going to say I was going to be late in. Someone kept me awake last night.â She flirted, a smile on her face, she relaxed into the pillows, enjoying hearing his voice. Sheâd deal with her insecurities later.
âWho? Must have been some company,â
âIt certainly was,â She thought to herself, playing over bits of her dream in her head, âmore than you know.â
âthe best.â
âGlad you enjoyed it.â He paused for a minute and she could her the bustle of the office and Bullâs rambling tones in the background. âLiv, I gotta go. Bull and the clients are here. Come by and see me when youâre in?â He sounded hopeful, almost like he was asking her on a date, but he wasnât.
âOf course. Go do your thing Mr hot shot lawyer.â
âAh, you know Iâm just a background guy, right? Iâve not been Mr Hot Shot lawyer in a while now.â
âJust go Benny. Iâll see you when I get in.â she smiled to herself. Sheâd seen him work  - or sort of at least, he was a good lawyer. It took a humble man to be so self-depreciating.
âI look forward to it. See you soon.â
She couldnât hold in the big smile that plastered across her cheeks. âSee you soon. Go, before Bull blows a gasket.â
âBye Liv.â
She leaned back and studied the ceiling, butterflies bubbling in her stomach. Sheâd only been there a day, and the dark haired, dark eyed man had already stolen all her senses.

Briefcases and Blood Splatter Chapter 2: Guilty Pleasures and Pool Benny Colon x OC
Thank you everyone who read the first chapter and enjoyed it! itâs always a boost when someone appreciates your work. It makes you work faster to get the next part out!! I hope you all enjoy this one!! let me know! :)Â Â 2453 words
The hours had ticked by without Olivia even noticing. The sun was beginning to dip behind the New York skyline, and TACâs muted windows allowed the little lab to be flooded with a warm orange light. Beeps and whirs came from the temporary machinery, but she paid them no heed, bobbing her head rhythmically along to the music coming through her headphones.
She tapped her pen against the table, her dark eyes searching through the data that her earlier blood and hair analysis tests had provided, hoping to find any new information that had not been in the âwelcomeâ pack she had been given by Marissa.
âBlood-Alcohol level is high. 0.10. High, but not life threatening. Impaired, but not belligerent.â She thought to herself, chewing the cap of her pen, a habit she hadnât been able to shake since university. âI need to get a test sample of the semen from Alyssaâs body and from the kid. Look and see if thereâs blood content mixed in it, or any hallucinogen or toxin.â
She was so involved in the paperwork and her thoughts she hadnât realised she had company, until he was standing beside her. That delicious smell of sandalwood, leather and citrus engulfed her nose, and she inhaled it happily, closing her eyes for a brief second to savour it.
Benny gently touched her shoulder to get her attention. She looked up at him, and saw his lips moving, but her music drowned out his words. She quickly removed her headphones and smiled up at him apologetically.
âHey Benny, sorry, I was involved in âŚâ
âThe Lion King?â he cut her off with a smirk before she could finish her sentence.
The expression on his face made her mouth dry. Olivia had never been one to get all giggly and shy around men. Even the ones she found attractive. That was her friend Dawn, she normally stayed cool and collected, but there was something about Benny that had struck a cord from the moment the pair of them had made eye contact. It had been completely solidified when Cable and Danny had dropped in to introduce themselves and encouraged her to join them in peeking down into mock court. He oozed confidence while he paced back and forth in front of the jury. He was confident, but not arrogant. His voice full of heat, passion and strength. Olivia was sure sheâd never seen someone put so much heart and soul into something that was essentially just an act. He had looked up towards the end of his closing argument and caught her eye. Without missing a beat heâd shot her a dashing smile and a subtle wink.
And in that moment Olivia knew sheâd have to keep her wits about her around the lawyer, or sheâd become one of those giggly girls she never thought sheâd be.
âSorry?â she said, furrowing her brow in confusion.
âYour headphones, I distinctly heard the opening beats to âI just canât wait to be kingââ
Olivia fought the blush that threatened to spider itâs way up her cheeks. She let out a slightly strained laugh instead. âYou caught me.â She joked good naturedly âEverywhere I look in my job thereâs doom and gloom. Its nice to listen to something light hearted, you know.â She wasnât sure why she was explaining herself to him, the words just bubbled out of her throat. âSo much death, and itâs always blood readings this, urinalysis that, Iâm normally up to my elbows is some form of body fluid â and at home, if Iâm in the morgue the people Iâm working on donât mind because you know, theyâre dead âŚâ
Benny said nothing, but listened to her talk with big smile on his face, showcasing his perfectly straight pearly whites and showing off his boyish dimples. His eyes were alight with amusement, but with no malice.
âI should really shut up, shouldnât I? Because now Iâm babbling at you, and you obviously came in here to ask me something, before I started waffling at you about the merits of Disney soundtracks.â She sighed and bit her lip. She put her pen down and flattened her hands out on the table to mentally and physically ground herself. Â âIâll try again. What can I do for you, Benny?â
The lawyer shook his head and laughed. It was a deep, smooth sound that Olivia had instantly come to adore, and she hadnât spent that long in his company so far. âthis man is going to be the death of me ⌠but I think I could live with it.â He gently placed a reassuring hand on top of hers, his fingers curling under her palms and giving the appendage a gentle squeeze.
âIf I didnât already like Disney, youâd have made me a convert.â His deep velvety tones were laced with humour.
âYouâre a Disney fan?â the words and their surprised tone had slipped from Oliviaâs mouth before she realised they had left her brain.
Benny snorted, âOf course.â
âYouâre a dark horse arenât you? Is the brooding, serious lawyer mask hiding more guilty pleasures?â and now she was flirting. Olivia could barely believe herself. But Benny didnât seem to have a problem with it, although an intensity took over his dark eyes as he regarded her.
âThereâs so much more to me than that, Miss Byrne. Iâll be happy to show you sometime.â
She was sure her ears werenât deceiving her ⌠was he ⌠flirting back?
She bit her lip again and felt the blush course up her cheeks, unhindered this time. She swore he shifted his weight towards her, closing the gap between them a little more.
The temporary lab door swung open and Marissa wandered in, her head buried in a manilla TAC folder, as usual. Olivia was beginning to realise that was Marissaâs default during the planning stages of a case. Benny almost jumped, as if coming to his senses, and shuffled back to put a bit more space between them. Liv lamented the loss of his warmth by her side.
âAny luck with the blood and hair Liv?â Marissa asked looking up from her folder with a warm smile. She looked at Benny a little shocked. âOh Benny âŚâ
âI came to ask Olivia here if sheâd like to join us at the bar for drinks tonight. Sort of a welcome thing.â He explained deftly. Olivia noted heâd left out any mention of Disney, or what they were really discussing when Marissa had interrupted.
Marissa nodded emphatically, âYou should, itâll be good to get to know you, and you us, a little better.â
Olivia chewed on her bottom lip. It had been a long day, and sheâd not yet managed to return to her hotel and unpack her things, but she supposed one drink wouldnât hurt. She did want to get to know them all, after all. âI really shouldnât, as Iâve not even unpacked yet. But I want to keep that jet lag at bay. Gotta get myself properly in your time zone. Iâll come for one.â
Marissa grinned happily, and Benny nodded at her, still regarding her with that hot, intense gaze.
âOne it is! There will be plenty more times. Weâre only just getting started.â The blonde said. âBut back to why Iâm here. Any luck with the blood and hair?â
Olivia opened her own file and pointed to her results with her pen as she spoke, both Benny and Marissa looking over her shoulders.
âNot much more than you already had. Iâve got the tox and alcohol levels all rated and labelled for you. Is there any way I can get access to the body? I know an autopsy has already been performed, but Iâd like to see a few things for myself.â
Marissa nodded, making some notes in her own file. âI will do my best, is there anything else I can do for you?â
Olivia busied herself closing up her notes and packing up her desk. âYes, I need some semen.â
Benny made an audible choking noise. She glanced at him out the corner of her eye. It was her turn to smirk.
âSemen?â Marissa repeated, checking she was clear.
âYep, a sample from the girlâs body and a living sample from Brandon so I can compare counts and check for abnormalities ⌠ooh and if you can, a sample of what was on Brandonâs clothing for the night in question. In my experience, teenage boys arenât exactly brilliantly skilled with their target practice, so it shouldnât be too hard.â
She could see Bennyâs shoulders moving as he chuckled under his breath.
âok ⌠Iâm not sure how Iâll broach that subject, but Iâll do what I can. This could get awkward.â
âYeah, sorry, Iâve got the easy bit this end.â Olivia shrugged apologetically.
âNo problem, Iâll get this logged. See you at the bar.â
Benny gave Marissa a minute to exit before he turned to her with a devilish grin. âIn your experience, huh?â
She laughed and lightly slapped his arm. She was very pleased to feel the hard sinew of bulging muscle beneath the finely tailored cloth he wore.
âGet your head out the gutter, Iâm probably old enough to be his mum.â
âProbably more like a disapproving aunt.â He held his arm out to her like a gentleman when she threw her handbag over her shoulder. âShall we?â
She willingly accepted his crooked elbow, and let him lead her from the room. âI used to work in a all boys boarding school while I was putting myself through uni. Trust me, there are a few things I wish I could unsee.â
 ***
â⌠And a passionfruit daquiri for our newest member of the family. Weâre glad youâre here.â Chunk placed the glass of frosted cocktail down in front of her.
Olivia found herself seated around a large round table, sandwiched between Chunk and Cable, with Marissa and Danny opposite them. They were all laughing, joking and learning things about each other, but she always found her eyes straying to the pool table nearby, where Benny and Bull were in the middle of a heated game.
Benny was currently leaning against the bar, with his pool cue tucked safely behind one leg. He had discarded his suit jacket, waistcoat and tie. The collar of his light blue shirt open by a few buttons and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The fabric did a wonderful job of showing off his muscles. He was laughing and baiting Bull, nursing what was left of his scotch. Occasionally his eyes would flicker up and meet hers, and he would smile, a soft smile.
âSo where did you say you trained in medicine?â Danny asked jovially, catching Oliviaâs attention.
âOh, Southampton, itâs not a big city or a prestigious university, but it was homely.â
âSouthampton âŚâ Chunk tapped his fingers on the table in thought, âWhere the Titanic sailed from?â
Olivia nodded, taking a mouthful of her drink and sighing, it was just what she needed, âThatâs the place.â
âIâve only ever seen London, Iâd like to go back and travel around, see Cornwall and places like that, I hear theyâre beautiful.â Marissa said dreamily.
âCornwall is gorgeous, have you ever had a proper British cream tea?â
âShhhh, donât mention food, Benny has the hearing of a bat when it comes to food.â Danny laughed. Olivia too giggled and watched the subject of their conversation through her eyelashes. He was leaning over the pool table, lining his cue up to take a shot. She tried not to openly ogle his ass too much, sheâd barely been in their company a day, she didnât want a reputation, but she had to admit, it was hard.
âSeriously, Iâve never seen someone eat like he does. Iâm surprised heâs not fat.â Chunk held his hands up.
âAnd heâs like a child if he gets hungry, so if he is, Iâd make a break for it Liv, save yourself!!â Cable laughed and made a dramatic hand gesture.
âIâm sure I can handle him.â She laughed too. âIâll bring you all some if I get a chance to make some scones.â
There was a loud pop as the final ball of the pool game was potted, and Bull whooped in victory. âAnd that my friend is why you need to keep your head in the game.â He sounded smug, and Benny slumped onto his bar stool in defeat, rubbing the back of his neck.
âHow about you, new girl, play pool much?â Bull asked her, looking at her over the top of his glasses.
Liv shook her head. âNot really, a couple of times at uni, and when I was young.â
âCome play the next game with me, I promise I wont clean out your wallet unlike Benny here.â
Everyone was watching her to gauge her reaction, it was Bullâs way of testing her mettle in a friendly manner, to see if she fit in with his little âfamilyâ.
âI donât play much, I might need a few pointers.â She excused herself from the group and joined the two men at the pool table, she was determined to show Bull that she could hold her own.
âIâll help you.â Benny said smoothly, finishing his drink and letting his eyes linger on her with that burning intensity.
âThank you, Benny.â She said sweetly, taking the cue from his outstretched hand. Their fingers brushed against each other and Liv felt her tummy jingle with butterflies.
âMy pleasure.â It was almost a hungry growl, gravelly, low and almost erotic.
âAnd I will enjoy beating you both.â Bull said loudly destroying the moment between them.
âTake him down a peg, Liv!â cheered Chunk and Cable.
Olivia grinned and gave them a thumbs up.
âYour breakâ Bull said lining up the balls in their starter positions.
âOk, so if you line up your cue here âŚâ Benny placed one hand on the table where he was indicating and used his other to guide her to the table, his touch warm and secure on the bottom of her back.
She lined the cue up against his hand and looked down the shaft of wood. âLike this?â
âMhmm, but a little closer, and lower ⌠like this âŚâ Benny encircled her body with his arms, his chin resting on her shoulder, so he could see. He was warm against her back, and Olivia couldnât help the big, goofy grin on her face at the contact.
Across the other side of the table Bull smirked, satisfied with himself as he watched the pair of them. He looked at Marissa, who shook her head with a resigned smile.
Briefcases and Blood Splatter Benny Colon x OC - Chapter 1: In the beginning
Hello! This is my first Benny Colon fic, I donât think thereâs enough out there for him, so I thought Iâd give it a crack. This first chapter is essentially introductions to get us off the ground running, so please dont judge too harshly!! :) Thanks for reading.   1622 words
Olivia Byrne looked up at the towering mirror like building and straightened the creases out of her jeans. Her work bag felt heavier today than it had in a long time, she hadnât worked for an independent company in a long time â sheâd been getting comfy in her position with the police, let alone provided evidence to a trial analysis team. Sheâd heard great things about Dr Jason Bull and his team, but that didnât make the uncomfortable swirl of nerves go away.
âCome on Liv.â She told herself encouragingly. Olivia had always been a bit shy, and the personal letter and request from Dr Bull that she attend and help them with this trial had not helped to cure her of that.
With a deep breath she put on a bright smile and entered through the main doors. A bored looking receptionist at the main desk pointed her towards an elevator and informed her she needed floor 22.
Olivia clipped her visitorâs badge to her blouse and gave herself an affirming nod. She knew she could do this.
TAC was huge. Olivia hadnât been quite prepared for the size, or modernity of it. Every wall was glass, and people milled around, talking loudly and pointing at large monitors made up of multiple screens. She was in awe as she looked around, her palms feeling a little over warm with nerves.
âOlivia Byrne?â A sophisticated blond woman made her way over, a kind smile on her face.
âThatâs me.â
The blond ladyâs smile brightened, and she offered a perfectly manicured hand, âIâm Marissa, I work closely with Dr Bull. Weâre really glad you were willing to help us with this case, weâve never had to bring a forensic pathology specialist in before, itâs quite exciting really.â Her eyes sparkled kindly.
Olivia wiped her palm on her jeans quickly before shaking Marissaâs outstretched hand. âHello, please call me Liv, Iâve never been one for formal, which is why I usually spend all my time in a lab. Iâm a little nervous, but I hope I can help.â Marissa looked faintly surprised at her outburst. âAnd Iâm babbling a lot arenât I? I do that when Iâm nervous, Iâm sorry.â
Marissa chuckled lightly and shook her head. âDonât you worry, thereâs no one to be nervous of here. Weâre all like a big family. Iâm sure youâll fit in while youâre with us. How was your flight?â Marissa started walking down the corridor, motioning for Olivia to follow along with her.
âUh long, but good, thank you. Itâs nice being away from London for a while.â
âI can imagine, but Iâm afraid New York is no less chaos. I did like London when I visited there though, thereâs something about it.â She stopped at a frosted glass door and swiped her ID card, there was a beep and the door opened an inch. âA few of our techs are setting up your lab for the case, just down the hall.â
Oliviaâs eyes widened as she stared in disbelief at the petite blonde lady, âYouâve built me a lab?â
Marissa opened her mouth to answer, but she was cut off by a deep masculine tone coming from inside the room. âOf course you have a lab. We need you to do your best work while youâre here.â
Marissa bobbed her eyebrows and grinned good naturedly, as she pushed the door open and stepped aside for Olivia to enter.
Two men inhabited the room, one at a desk â he was blonde with glasses and a typical psychologistâs cardigan. Internally she smirked, this must be Dr Bull.
âIâm Dr Bull, and welcome to TAC, Miss Olivia Byrne. Iâm glad you could make it. Iâve heard a lot about your work for Scotland yard. I took a look at the Parson triple murder case you worked on a couple of months ago. Youâre very good at what you do.â
âThank you, Dr Bull.â
âBull or Jasonâ Bull cut her off waving his hand. Liv nodded and started again.
âThank you, Jason.â
âYouâre honoured to be given the choice, you must be good.â A deep, almost lyrical voice said from the other side of the room. Olivia turned to look at itâs owner and her heart skipped a little beat. He had perfect dark hair, olive skin that looked incredibly smooth and the darkest, most intense eyes she had ever seen. He sat in a large leather arm chair, his hands resting casually on his thighs. The expensive looking three piece suit just added to his suave charm.
Bull sighed and gestured toward the other man âBenny Colon, our in house council.â
Liv swallowed down her nerves and offered him her hand, acutely aware that she wished sheâd repainted her nails. âHello, lovely to meet you.â
He took her hand in both of his and gave her a firm handshake, his fingers giving her a reassuring squeeze. âThe pleasure is mine.â
Liv couldnât fight the dusky pink flush that threatened to burn her cheeks, and turned her face away quickly.
âSo,â Bull started, regaining her attention. His eyes flicked momentarily between her and Benny, Olivia could almost see the cogs turning in his head as the corner of his mouth lifted almost imperceptibly. âHow much do you know about our current case? I gather itâs not reached the news in good olâ England?â
âIt hasnât, but I sent Liv a file on the case to look over on her flight. It laid out all the details we have for her.â Marissa said, offering her one of the spare chairs in the room.
Olivia shook her head, deciding to remain standing after such a long flight. Between plane seats and the three cabs sheâd had to take since she left home yesterday, she had begun to lose the feeling in her backside. âThank you, but I feel like Iâve been sitting for a lifetime, I need to get my blood flowing again.â She did however, place her work back on the ground and crouched next to it, retrieving out the folder she had been sent. âLetâs see ⌠rich boy turns 18, uses daddyâs money to host a big bash on board his, or daddyâs yacht. Does what teenage boys do, and has sex with a pretty girl, only problem is, the pretty girl is found strangled and washed up on the beach âŚâ
Benny nodded his head appreciatively, and smiled at her âWell, that was concise.â Olivia couldnât help but smile back, his dimples were one of the most attractive things she thought sheâd ever seen.
âThank you, Mr Colonâ
He held his hands up and continued to smile at her reassuringly, his chocolate eyes sparkling with mirth. âBenny, please.â
âBennyâ she repeated, nodding and smiling back. She held his gaze for a couple of seconds before directing her attention back to her temporary boss. âSo what would you like me to do? If you have a lab I can probably run all manner of tests, I could even pull a tox screen if you feel itâs needed, my inhouse results might not be as clear cut as a designated tox lab, but I can do my best. I can test for outside or internal factors as well, judge whether anything triggered her body to shut down prior to the strangulation âŚâ Bull just sat back, watching her with an amused look on his face, twirling his glasses around in one hand. Olivia looked back to Marissa, âIâm doing it again, arenât I?â Marissa laughed gently and nodded, reaching out to pat her hand.
âYou tend to over think when in unfamiliar situations. You speak whatever is going through your head in those moments, like you canât control it. Itâs a nervous tick. And here you are, in a new building, in a different country, surrounded by people you donât know. Your brain is going into overdrive.â Bull analysed, looking smug.
âIn other words.â Benny soothed, standing up from his chair, âYouâre nervous and thatâs ok. Weâll have you settled in before you know it.â He came to stand beside her and placed a large, warm hand on her shoulder blade. âI need to get down to mock court to go over the opening statement, let me show you to your lab, you can get some peace in there.â He smelled amazing, and with every subtle movement a waft of expensive came her way. Sandalwood, leather and citrus assaulted her nose.
âA good plan.â Bull also got his feet, nodding at her. âWeâve manged to secure some blood and hair samples if you could look them over for any abnormalities or anomalies.â
âSureâ Olivia smiled reassuringly, and nodded, blood and hair follicle analysis were easy, her bread and butter back home. She went to pick up her work bag, but as her fingers closed around the handle warm, soft fingers collided with hers. Benny, being the gentleman Liv could already tell he was, picked up her bag for her and gestured for her to leave the room, him following closely behind her.
Marissa watched the pair go, a contented look on her face. With a little sigh she turned to her boss who was also watching his old friend and new employee leave.
âShe seems sweet. If a little nervous.â
Bull nodded and put his glasses on to look through some paperwork on his desk.
âSheâll warm up. Benny will look after her.â
