this is mostly pronounced amongst teens and young adults but it’s so funny to me when I see discourse that’s like “what does a 26 year old and a 32 year old have in common????” acting like somehow 6 years is a massive generational gap… girl not only is that the same generation but it’s also literally nothing once you’re both fully grown adults

Not certain if this has already been posted about here, but iNaturalist recently uploaded a blog post stating that they had received a grant from Google to incorporate new forms of generative AI into their 'computer vision' model.
I'm sure I don't need to tell most of you why this is a horrible idea, that does away with much of the trust gained by the thus far great service that is iNaturalist. But, to elaborate on my point, to collaborate with Google on tools such as these is a slap in the face to much of the userbase, including a multitude of biological experts and conservationists across the globe.
They claim that they will work hard to make sure that the identification information provided by the AI tools is of the highest quality, which I do not entirely doubt from this team. I would hope that there is a thorough vetting process in place for this information (Though, if you need people to vet the information, what's the point of the generative AI over a simple wiki of identification criteria). Nonetheless, if you've seen Google's (or any other tech company's) work in this field in the past, which you likely have, you will know that these tools are not ready to explain the nuances of species identification, as they continue to provide heavy amounts of complete misinformation on a daily basis. Users may be able to provide feedback, but should a casual user look to the AI for an explanation, many would not realize if what they are being told is wrong.
Furthermore, while the data is not entirely my concern, as the service has been using our data for years to train its 'computer vision' model into what it is today, and they claim to have ways to credit people in place, it does make it quite concerning that Google is involved in this deal. I can't say for certain that they will do anything more with the data given, but Google has proven time and again to be highly untrustworthy as a company.
Though, that is something I'm less concerned by than I am by the fact that a non-profit so dedicated to the biodiversity of the earth and the naturalists on it would even dare lock in a deal of this nature. Not only making a deal to create yet another shoehorned misinformation machine, that which has been proven to use more unclean energy and water (among other things) than it's worth for each unsatisfactory and untrustworthy search answer, but doing so with one of the greediest companies on the face of the earth, a beacon of smog shining in colors antithetical to the iNaturalist mission statement. It's a disgrace.
In conclusion, I want to believe in the good of iNaturalist. The point stands, though, that to do this is a step in the worst possible direction. Especially when they, for all intents and purposes, already had a system that works! With their 'computer vision' model providing basic suggestions (if not always accurate in and of itself), and user suggested IDs providing further details and corrections where needed.
If you're an iNaturalist user who stands in opposition to this decision, leave a comment on this blog post, and maybe we can get this overturned.
[Note: Yes, I am aware there is good AI used in science, this is generative AI, which is a different thing entirely. Also, if you come onto this post with strawmen or irrelevant edge-cases I will wring your neck.]
UPDATE
Comments on the blog post linked above have officially been disabled—in its place, iNaturalist has opened a form for users to provide their feedback on this decision.
actually wait I wanna make this post. it is true that society shames all sexual activity (especially the sexual activity of queer and/or fat people) and it is also true that society expects a certain level of sexual "normalcy" (heterosexual monogamous sex for procreation and intimacy purposes). these are both true and in fact. part of the exact same problem.
the idea that oppression has never contradicted itself is a bold faced lie. nothing is ever simple. there's always a loophole or crossover or whatever. it doesn't have to make sense, it just has to hold certain groups of people down
It's not about any absolute sense of values, it's about societal control
Right! If the rules are contradictory, then you are always in trouble no matter what, which means you always owe a debt of obedience to make up for your misbehavior. I first became aware of this dynamic when I was in a workplace that had so many rules that it was humanly impossible to follow them all.
Corollary: just because you feel pressured to be less X (eg sexual/non-sexual) than you are doesn't mean people who are less X than you are all treated better than you. Some of them, maybe, but often they feel just as pressured to be more X than they are. Society keeps us all running in circles and resenting each other by constantly redefining acceptability to seem just out of reach.

Wii smoking game where you pretend the wii remote is a cigar and move it to your mouth to puff on it and the screen shows your mii smoking. And the game is called Wii be Smoking
I've found that "don't act like the kind of people you wouldn't want to interact with" is a very good self-care/protection praxis. "Like attracts like" might not be true on a metaphysical level, but it's an accurate enough heuristic in social contexts because people tend to gravitate toward people who put off vibes they resonate with. Act like the kind of person you would want to interact with, and you'll find that you don't deal with nearly as many obnoxious people.

Anybody else have a growing fear of updating their tech cuz everything seems to be getting worse and worse
Functionally, there's very little difference between watching a movie on poob and watching a movie on basic cable. Yet, for some reason, the advertisements on poob offend me far more
ad breaks on poob always interrupt important scenes or make really jarring cuts.
when it's on cable, they've timed the commercial breaks in a way that generally isn't as disruptive. someone took the time to "reformat" the movie for tv.
ads on poob always KNOW that they're on poob and want me to interact with them or click them. the number of QR codes or ads-in-separate-ad-framing/window are infuriating and jarring.
cable commercials are just stupid little skits i can mute to go use the bathroom.
ads on poob are less than 2 minutes--not enough time to do anything, but enough time to piss me off.
cable commercials are 2-5 minutes, which is enough time to go do something/bathroom or snack break, or talk to whoever you're watching with.
ads on poob are the same 3-4 commercials over and over and over and over again, often cutting to them immediately with no warning, and poob struggles to like, catch up to the fact that it's having to show a different progress bar, or a different timer.
cable commercials, esp during primetime, generally cycle through like 10-15 minimum, so you can go an ad break or two without seeing the same commercial. and they usually only pop up during quiet moments, at regular intervals, so you can see them coming--and there isn't a weird lag/loading time.
in both cases i am being accosted by advertisements and treated like a consumer to manipulate and exploit. the volume changes on cable and poob, the brightness level is eye-searing in both cases.
but poob doesn't respect that i'm here for the MOVIE. cable, thanks to preexisting, decades-old norms around broadcast television, still kind of does. kind of. it's easier to ignore those commercials than the ones on poob.
basically i think poob follows ad norms established on the internet--pop-ups, invasive flashing bullshit, creating lag, taking up time and attention--and cable follows established cable norms of, "time for a few minutes of ads that are just stupid little skits instead of spam machines, and then back to your otherwise uninterrupted movie."
Yeah honestly that all tracks.
#you are doing some goncharov shit to me
I mean i know what you're saying, but there's about a dozen free ad-supported streaming services and i respect none of them to use any of their names. Meanwhile, Poob has fully entered the tumblr lexicon as a shorthand for stupidly-named tech products, especially streaming services.
