STARDATE UNKNOWN

            ❝ dad?  ❞   he fixed the other with a confused stare. of all the COUNTERPARTS aboard this ship he found HIMSELF to be the most interesting &, in ways, the most DIFFERENT. he could see the ones he knew from his own ship in the faces here but when he stares at his own he finds that he’s meeting a COMPLETE STRANGER. yes, they have few similarities but he has found, from chatting with his other self, that their lives have been so ALTERED from each other that it is hard to know they are the same. 

              & he’s quite interested in the other’s life, all the similarities & all the differences, but it is this question, of their FATHER, that strikes him most about his younger counterpart. he feels his gut TWIST about it; about the SADNESS that laces jim’s tone. his face begins to soften & his mouth part with some REALIZATION as he looks to the ground. this was QUITE a difference, indeed. eyes scan back up to the other, this time slightly more gentle.

There’s a brief, awkward moment of suspended silence, and then -

❝Excuse me for staring.  I’d heard about this but - seeing it is another thing e n t i r e l y.  Oh! You must think I’m so rude.  I’m Lieutenant Uhura.  It’s a pleasure to MEET you.❞

              three days on his ship ( sort of. it’s not his ship --- it’s HIS. the other james kirk. one with big blue eyes & a problem with following rules. ) & he’s hardly seen anything other than the med bay. he was confined to here for two days while bones ( a different bones ) proved who he was with a DNA test. after that, after they concluded that he wasn’t INSANE for claiming to be who he was, they DID give him a small living quarter but he still finds himself back in the med bay the next day due to the CURIOSITY of his ( no, not his, nothing here is his ) the doctor. 

              in that time it seems the word of him had also drifted about the ship for it wasn’t only doctor mccoy who had come to take a peek at the ship’s OTHER captain. it all did well to make him slightly uncomfortable, though he hadn’t voiced it. he didn’t exactly ENJOY being a spectacle for his ( not his. ) crew mates to OGLE at. he forgives them, though, because he can’t blame them. so when he feels a pair of eyes on his back he merely sighs, shoulders hunching slightly, until she breaks the silence. 

              an apology. he smiles as he shifts & moves his head to look at the ground by her feet. he hasn’t heard an apology all day --- but he’s not SURPRISED that it’s from her.   ❝ it’s --- it’s alright. i can imagine that this --- this must be a shock. ❞   shock might not be the best word for it, but it’s the best he can come up with. he lifts his face now to meet her eyes, to really stare at someone who is a dear friend & a STRANGER at the same time.   ❝ lieutenant uhura. . .  ❞   he repeats her name & his smile rises fondly at her. her? RUDE? he’d never think something such as that.   ❝ captain james t. kirk . . . the pleasure is all mine.  ❞
