As leader of boyband BIG BANG for the past nine years, G-Dragon has not only been a top-tier pop star throughout Asia, but a fashion icon too. A natural style chameleon, his taste is fluid and far reaching: in his wardrobe, off-the-runway pieces from Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Rick Owens and Balmain mingle with avant streetwear from Hood By Air, KTZ, Ambush. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the front row invites from designers such as Yohji Yamamoto to Lanvin have been forthcoming since 2012, but this Paris couture season marked G-Dragon’s entrée into the big leagues. The 26-year-old brought a shock of colour to the Chanel Casino, where he threw dice and rubbed shoulders with Kristen Stewart, Lily Rose Depp, Julianne Moore and Kanye West.

If I were to talk about my slump when it came to music, there were times when, even with a lot of effort, it wouldn’t turn out well. In the past, even after coming back from a long, tiring day, I would write at least two songs at the dorm before I slept as if it were my duty. Last year, however, things just weren’t working out for me so the album kept getting delayed. I’m also not the type who writes songs just for the sake of it. Because of that, the CEO was worried last year; I used to do things so easily, but now the album just kept getting delayed. What I’ve realized through this promotion was that BIGBANG has to continue with all five members. I messaged the members saying, ‘We really need to release an album,’ and sent one to the CEO saying, ‘If the company creates the space for all the members to work together, I think we will be able to do it.’ From the end of last year to the beginning of this year, we all worked together in the studio. I took out all the songs that I had made in the past three years. This single is filled with songs that we’ve worked on these past two to three months. People who work in the music field all say that they have a ‘muse.’ For me, I think my members are my muse. If I think about who I work for, it has always been the members. This is how I got out of my slump.

Even if you’re not happy there is meaning. It’s just that you don’t want to give meaning.

I worked a lot on this album. I worried a lot about this album. The pressure of making something you all will like is huge.

Honestly last year, I had a slump that seemed like a slump but not. Because the group itself increased (in terms of popularity) thanks to you all, I think I had a lot of pressure without knowing because the album had to be good since it’s coming out after a long while. So I worried a lot, but then I did it and it worked.

It’s a little different. Different from the stage, I’m shy with strangers; I only have old friends since my elementary and middle school years. I meet new people everyday but rather than trying to meet new people, I meet friends in my daily life. In the case of fans, of course there are old fans but on the other hand there are many new fans too, so when I have a chance to meet our fans, I’m not good at being affectionate. That’s why I may seem cold, but in my heart I think about them and they are my strength and great comfort.

I don’t feel awkward. I’ve been with you all.I’ve done GD&TOP, I made joke with Daesung, hang out with Seungri and with Taeyang… I don’t think there’s anyone.

G-DRAGON: We still haven’t gone to the military. I don’t know how that problem would play out as a variable. And also, each of us is increasing our position with regards to the solo activities we’ve begun. If in the past, we were people who were nothing without BIGBANG, then right now we honestly have the power to survive even without BIGBANG. In this situation, I think that the key determinant will be how much each member cares about BIGBANG. If we can continue caring about it, then BIGBANG will last for a long time, but if not then of course we might get tangled up with some other problems like that ones that have broken apart other idol groups.
