Capstone 4608

I'm not done yet but I think this is doable in about 16 hours!!!

All that's left to do is color correction, balancing the lightness on the characters to account for the color burn for the paper, paper texture on the backgrounds, music, and foley mixing.

It's Week 13, and I now have almost all the shots colored, shot 54B has its correct audio now, and I've started doing passes of sound design! Also, it turns out that a lot of the compositing in Toonboom Harmony is actually really simple to do.

And here's what the sound design timeline in Reaper looks like. I'm about 1/3 of the way done with it, but it's a surprising amount for the one day of work.

I got most of what I wanted to accomplish done this week! All of my ie-downs are done, and I've gotten 54 seconds of lineart done! Also, it turns out that doing the circle drop shadows isn't anywhere near as bad of time sink than I was worried that it would be.

It also turns out that I can't actually use any of the new lines that the goose's voice actor recorded, because the audio quality is too different.

So, I missed updating last week. I told myself I'd put it up, and then forgot entirely.

I currently only have 48 seconds of tie-downs to do, and then I'm off to ink and paint. There are some errors in the edit here that I want to correct, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it's shaping up. I still need to do backgrounds, but I'm hoping I can get a bit ahead over Spring Break so that I can have more time for backgrounds, sound, and color. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find colorists or line artists.

Week 6 has just ended, and I've got most of the animation that I wanted to get done this week, completed. About 16 seconds of my runtime is matte paintings, but also there's about 15 seconds in my Spreadsheet of Doom that's just time I have unaccounted for.

Most of the inbetweens are done, and I have credits now! They're roughed out, and I'm currently planning on scanning in some newsprint so it feels a little more like the Tops coupons I get in the mail.

I'm a bit behind in animating. For TG-41 and TG-13, these are largely shots that don't have a ton of motion to them. TG-13, for instance, is mostly the title card. The two shots with red text also don't have a ton of movement to them, but I'm being bottlenecked by the lack of sketched background for them.

Great news! I was able to get a whole 90 seconds of animation inbetweened for the short in two days! This averaged about 45 seconds per day. Interestingly, I noticed that a lot of my more difficult shots are actually in the 2-4 second range. Additionally, given that I wound up taking an entire 8 hour workday to get through the first 45, I found that the state guidelines for employee breaks (minus one because I find the morning 15 breaks my momentum) are actually really helpful. Even if this isn't a thing that I'm employed for, having the structure is really nice.

For the WIP this week, I've added one of the two montages that I think should help provide more context for why these things are happening to this guy. The one that I need to add is just a couple of somewhat still shots of the geese attacking at the "I didn't think this could be so... peaceful?" Line. Additionally, there's black spaces around where the Med Student is getting extorted for bread because I need to adjust the timing for those shots in the Harmony files, the black spaces are the placeholders for that. Additionally, the Real Peter's gag has been largely removed; I just need to actually create the assets.

I've hit the point where I only need to work on 1 minute and 20 seconds of animation in a week instead of sprinting through the whole film in order to get things done. Unfortunately, I didn't properly write this out anywhere, and now I'm behind by about 10 seconds. (briefly confused 40 seconds a day and 40 seconds a week, and then forgot to properly do math so I thought this was worse than it actually was).

I also got the call for background artists posted all around Booth and Gannet, last week, but so far no one's picked me up on that.

In bad news, while I have some lines that I wanted to adjust for the goose, including reworking the Real Peter's Bread gag, his VA is currently unable to access any of his recording equipment, as said VA is in England.

And here's the updated production schedule, just so I can get a visual of how things are shaping up. The highlighted rows are the ones that are just matte paintings with little/no movement, and they don't really get counted neatly with the rest of the shots.

Week 2 is done, and so are breakdown frames for most of the short! I think I got a bit over ambitious with trying to do all the breakdown shots in one week, but I only have about 30 seconds left to do breakdowns for, so it can't have been that bad.

I have a plan for the credits, mainly to base it around grocery store newspaper coupons, but that's an asset I'll need to make.

I'm still torn between tarantellas, (see previous post) but that's a struggle for another day.

And finally, the updated Spreadsheet of Doom for this week!

So, in an effort to have some form of background music for the short, I've been looking for public domain sheet music to mix into something new. For The Godfather, the music there consists largely of slowed down Italian Tarantellas, so that's the direction I wound up looking in.

Option 1 is this: Tarantella Op. 23 by William Henry Squire. It's moody, and I could probably shuffle around different sections so that the brighter middle chunk comes before the moodiness that the piece opens with.

Option 2 is Alla Tarantella by Edgar A Brazelton. The audio attached below is a transcription that I did, but I haven't had the chance to put in any dynamics yet. A lot of the drama in this piece comes later on, but rearranging for the short might be less of a problem than it feels like right now.

Almost all keyframed animation is finished! There are a couple shots that focus on the loaf of bread that I'm considering using a 3D model for, and one shot that might be redundant. Otherwise, I'm slightly ahead of schedule with animation!

I got stunlocked very badly this week. I do have a new animatic version, though.

These are the Med Student's turnarounds, for both the warm and cold weather portions of the short

Here's what the Goose's turnaround looks like, and I'm so grateful he's symmetrical right now

I'm planning on using the middle goose as the color palette for him. He looks too nicely cooked in the one on the right. The one on the left will be reserved for background geese.

And here's all the options for the med student, with both cold and warm weather. His socks are navy blue here pretty consistently, but I was planning on making them arcade- floor patterned. This would be accomplished by either creating a texture I could drop into toonboom with the paint bucket, or by using a cutter node and tracking it to his ankles where applicable.

And here's animatic 6! As far as timings and shot framings go, not a whole lot has changed. However, the goose and the med student have almost all of their lines in! I've also added a bit more breathing room in spots.
