MBTI Terms vs Conventional Meaning
One of the main problems with MBTI is that this theory uses rather common words to indicate types, but these MBTI ājargonā actually have completely different meanings from their conventional usage. This leads to misunderstandings of what the actual MBTI theory is about.
Moreover, most MBTI tests give you results based on percentages of I vs E, S vs N, T vs F, and J vs P. This creates a misunderstanding that the theory is based on the dichotomies between each letter pair, and that someone can be half J and half P, for example.
Letās explore what MBTI terms really mean, and how they differ from the conventional meanings of these words, and the misinterpreted stereotypical/dichotomous āMBTIā meanings.
Introvert (I)
Introvert (conventional & stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who likes to spend time alone, preferring to be in their own room reading books
Someone who dislikes parties or any kinds of social gatherings
Probably shy and doesnāt talk much, may have social anxiety
Has few close friends, or, no real life friends
Has low energy
Introvert (MBTI)
Having a dominant introverted function (Ti, Fi, Ni, or Si)
A preference for focusing their energy inward e.g. tending to their own thoughts alone, analyzing themselves and their environment
A preference for formulating complete thoughts or theories on their own first before sharing them with other people
An MBTI introvert can be outgoing and sociable, but they still feel more at home being with their own thoughts and get worn out faster when interacting with people than extraverts
Extravert (E)
Extravert (conventional & stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone whoās outgoing and a social butterfly
Loves parties
Has a large group of friends and large network of acquaintances
Great at networking and making new friends
Talkative and socially confident
Energetic
Extravert (MBTI)
Having a dominant extraverted function (Te, Fe, Ne, or Se)
A preference for focusing their energy outward e.g. interacting with the outside world by talking to others or taking actions and interacting with their surroundings
A preference for formulating their thoughts as they talk out loud to other people without having completely polished thoughts beforehand
An MBTI extravert can have social anxiety and dislike spending time with a large group of people, but they still have a preference of interacting with the outside world. An MBTI extravert may only prefer spending time with their few close friends, but they need to interact with those few close friends a lot to feel fulfilled and balanced.
Ambivert
Ambivert (conventional)
Someone who has both qualities of the conventional introvert and the conventional extravert in moderate amount
i.e. pretty much everyone on earth
Ambivert (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who gets 50% E and 50% I on MBTI tests
Ambivert (MBTI)
This is a trick. It doesnāt exist in this theory.
Why? Because of each typeās thought process works based on 4 cognitive functions (out of 8). You canāt be half this type and half the other type because youād have conflicting cognitive functions - i.e. constant cognitive dissonance with every single living thought, so youād not be a functioning human (get the pun?).
For the more advanced MBTI enthusiasts: Yes, introverts and extraverts with the same last 3 letters have the same functions (e.g. INTP and ENTP), but you still canāt really be half-half because Ti-Ne and Ne-Ti approach the world differently. They experience different problems and stress factors (Ti-Si loop and Fe grip v.s. Ne-Fe loop and Si-grip).
If you donāt know what cognitive functions are, start with this.
Intuitive (N)
Intuitive (conventional)
Knowing something to be true without conscious reasoning or the need to go through information
āWomenās intuitionā
Having an almost psychic ability to āgetā people
Fluid intelligence (e.g. an intuitive learner)
Intuitive (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
An intelligent, interesting person who gets all the funny jokes and subtle hints that people give
Imaginative, creative, artistic, explorative
Intuitive (MBTI)
Someone who prefers to use interpretations of information they receive from the 5 senses - e.g. possibilities of what these things could be, their theoretical usage, and what they relate to (Ne), or what these things symbolically represent and will become in the future (Ni)
A preference for discussing theoretical, abstract, symbolic topics
A preference to understand the global, overall picture before getting into details
Being an Intuitive does not equate being intelligent. There are plenty of boring Intuitives around. It depends on how you develop yourself.
Sensing (S)
Sensing (conventional)
Quite similar to the conventional meaning of intuition - having a feeling that thereās something going on beneath the surface (e.g. āIām sensing something wrong hereā)
Perceiving or becoming aware of something
Sensor (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
An unintelligent, boring person who always misses hints and has no sense of humor
Bland, boring, dull, mediocre
Sensing (MBTI)
Someone who prefers to use direct information they receive from the 5 senses - e.g. what these things are and what I can use them for right now (Se), or what these things are and how they have been used effectively in the past (Si)
A preference for discussing practical, applicable, immediately relevant topics
A preference for learning details first, then building those details up to an overall picture
Sensors can be intelligent, creative, and artistic (yes, even SJs)
Thinking (T)
Thinking (conventional)
The process of considering or reasoning about something
Directing oneās mind towards something or someone
Thinking (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who thinks a lot
Making decisions based on logic and rationality
Someone who is calm and intelligent
Someone who is robotic and stoic, and doesnāt have any emotions
Someone who is doing something technical like hard sciences and maths
Like a stereotypical man
Thinking (MBTI)
A preference for making decisions based on facts, truth and logical analysis (Ti), rationality and empirical evidence (Te)
MBTI Thinkers can learn to be considerate and not offensive to others, especially if their feeling function is in the tertiary position.
MBTI Thinkers have emotions, and can act emotionally/irrationally, especially in times of stress or if immature
MBTI Thinkers are not automatically good at science and math, and may not even like those subjects. They can be amazing artists and musicians.
Feeling (F)
Feeling (conventional)
An emotional state or reaction
Experiencing an emotion or sensation
Feeling (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who feels a lot and doesnāt think a lot
Making decisions based on emotions
An emotional person; someone whoās dramatic, may be animated, sweet, and nice
Most likely unintelligent, not academic, and incapable of logical thinking
Someone who is doing something involving arts, languages, or humanities
Like a stereotypical woman
Feeling (MBTI)
A preference for making decisions based on what is morally just, personal ethics (Fi) or keeping social harmony (Fe)
MBTI Feelers can be logical, think empirically, good at science and math, and do not act emotional
MBTI Feelers can be bashful and inconsiderate, especially if immature or under stress
Judging (J)
Judging (conventional)
Forming an opinion or conclusion about something
Being judgmental; determining whether qualities someone or something has are correct or desirable
Judging (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who is organized, responsible, structured, neat, clean, tidy
Someone who is always on time
Someone who loves schedules and needs to plan ahead
Judging (MBTI)
Having a dominant (if extraverted) or auxiliary (if introverted) extraverted judging functions (Je) - Te, Fe
Judgers can be messy, spontaneous, and always late (especially in leisure). These are learned behaviors/habits. Their external behaviors do not dictate their MBTI (i.e. thought process).
Perceiving (P)
Perceiving (conventional)
The way the brain processes external information through the 5 senses
Becoming aware of something
Interpreting something in a particular way
Perceiving (stereotypical/dichotomous MBTI)
Someone who is messy, scattered, disorganized, lazy, unreliable
Someone who is always late
Someone who is easy going and always go with the flow
Someone who isĀ spontaneous and loves surprises
Perceiving (MBTI)
Having a dominant (if extraverted) or auxiliary (if introverted) extraverted perceiving functions (Pe) - Ne, Se
Perceivers can be outwardly organized, tidy, and always on time (especially in the work place or if they grew up in that environment). These are learned behaviors/habits. Their external behaviors do not dictate their MBTI (i.e. thought process).

Ni-Doms Discuss: Reading People
INFJ: Sometimes I read someone and I just blurt out my findings because I know it. I get so caught up in proving that I was able to deduce the reasons someone does something that I become insensitive.
INTJ: I know exactly what you mean. Itās likeĀ āHaha I figured you out. Iām good.ā
INFJ: Iām extremely ashamed of it.
INTJ: Iām not.
INFJ: ⦠. .
INTJ: ⦠But anyway I donāt do that to people I care about.
INFJ: Weeeelll we do it to each other sometimes.
INTJ: Accidentally. I get so caught up in it that I forget your feelings.
INFJ: Haha Ni-doms picking apart each otherās weaknesses and not liking the taste of their own medicine.
INTJ: Nope, I donāt like it when itās done to me.
INFJ: I read people without meaning to. But I only reveal my findings to you. Iām not gonna go up to an acquaintance and be likeĀ āHey, the reason you canāt trust men is because your father abandoned you as a child.ā
INTJ: It just feels cathartic. It actually feels good because itās like youāre getting rewarded for being clever. LikeĀ āYessss I was rightā.
INFJ: Exactly. But then the person cries and it doesnāt feel like winning anymore.
INTJ: Oh my god yes. Iām likeĀ āShit, I fucked upā.
INFJ: Or in some cases if I donāt really care about the person much Iām secretly likeĀ āMan, why do you gotta ruin this moment for me?ā while my pride turns to guilt. I know that you generally look for incompetence, but I tend to accidentally read emotional weaknesses and insecurities in people.
INTJ: I can target emotional weaknesses too. But I had to train myself to do it. I had to out of necessity.
INFJ: I read insecurities without meaning to. But I usually use it for good and use what I find to avoid certain topics. I didnāt have to train myself, it just comes naturally to me. It happens even when I donāt need to know their weaknesses which makes me feel bad.
INTJ: Yeah I had to force myself to look for it. But it tires me to think that fast and that hard about what the person is feeling. Itās much easier for me to pinpoint their logical fallacies.
INFJ: Sometimes I have intrusive thoughts when Iām talking to someone and I thinkĀ āIf I respond this way right now I could hurt them immenselyā. Then I thinkĀ āWow, myself, what is wrong with you?ā
INTJ: I get that too. And then I use that to avoid conflict. But I do use it on people who piss me off. Sometimes Iām too arrogant which is my weakness.
INFJ: Someone would need to piss me off really really badly for me to do that. And then Iād use all of my collective knowledge of their insecurities that Iāve gathered to destroy them.
INTJ: This is why weāre perfect for each other.
INFJ: Yes. We make a perfect team of assholes⦠. . Until we use it on each other. And then itās likeĀ āwhat are you doing, friend. What is this friendly fire?ā
Someone posted this in an MBTI Facebook group Iām a part of. INFJ received INFJ when she followed the flow chart. I (ISTJ) also received INFJ ššš How accurate is this chart for all of you? Reblog with your type and the type the chart gives you! š
Any advice for INTJ falling for INFJ?
Choose your wording carefully, but donāt lie. INFJs are sensitive souls, and care a lot about what others think of us, but we also value honesty. So say what you mean, but do it kindly. Or at the very least, give us a warning before you unleash some brutal truth. Just be considerate. Weāre hard enough on ourselves as it is because weāre unrelenting perfectionists, so having an extra layer of criticism from someone we care about will need some mental preparation. Iām saying this specifically because INTJs are known to accidentally say some brutal things with the intention of being helpful.
Thatās really just the most important thing. Your main issue will likely just be Te and Fe butting heads sometimes.

User guide to your INFJ
Your INFJ comes with:Ā
One (1) crystal ballĀ
One (1) social mirror
Five hundred (500) calendarsĀ
Unlimited stock of fears and worriesĀ
Features: Ā
Ni: This feature makes the INFJ able to think of any consequence of their action, making them seem psychic. Ni also leads to sudden realizations.Ā
Fe: This feature makes the othervwise socially awkward INFJ able to socialize by mimicing the features of their interlocutor. Fe does sometimes fail. When this happens make sure the INFJ doesnt start digging a hole for themself to live in.
Ti: This feature makes the INFJ able to overanalyse the crap out of people, pay too much attention to insignificant detail and read too much into said detail.Ā
Se: This feature is the INFJs appendix. You should might consider to have this feature removed, as it causes the INFJ to occasionally overeat, oversleep, binge drink etc. Call the service number for advice if this is wanted.
Care:Ā
Food: The INFJ may forget to eat, and they may overeat. When your INFJ haven eaten in a long time, suggest that they should eat something. They will appreciate this and take it as a sign of care. However, do not speak about their overeating. EVER.
Sleep:Ā Your INFJ will (usually) make sure to get enough sleep. The exception is if they are in a particularly stressful period. In such periods they might end up pulling all-nighters, or they might just sleep to avoid the stressful problem.Ā
Hygiene: Your INFJ will have an ok hygiene. This is because of their fair of smelling or in other ways making themselves look bad to other people. With some INFJs this will comepletely change if they are alone for the day. They might forget that brushing their teeth is even a thing.Ā
Stress: If the INFJ is put under too much pressure and get stressed, the INFJ might: a) become emotionally cold, forget essential needs and become too focused on work. b) overindulge in certain activities, like watching a lot of TV, overeating, binge drinking etc.Ā
Other needs: Your INFJ will need hugs and words of affirmation. However, they will usually not initiate it or ask for it. As much as they hate to admit it, they also need advice sometimes. If your INFJ seems to be having troubles with opening up, you can always give them some alcohol. NB: your drunk INFJ may just end up handing you all the drinks. This is because they fear being the drunkest one at the party.Ā
Relationships with other units:
NTs: Your INFJ might feel intimidated by the xNTJs, but usually love the company of xNTPs.Ā
NFs: In interaction with other xNFJs, the INFJ and the other unit will usually just mirror each others behaviour, opinions and feelings. It usually works out fine. In company with certain NFPs the INFJ will sometimes feel scared to voice an opinon. With other NFPs this isnt an issue at all.Ā
SPs: The INFJ will usually get along ok with the SPs, but might get tired of their need for adrenaline, as this will tire out the INFJs Ni.Ā
SJs: Your INFJ will usually get along great with xSFJs. The xSTJs, like the xNTJs, might intimidate the INFJ.Ā
FAQ:Ā
There seems to be a problem with my INFJās speech, how can i fix this? Theres nothing wrong with your INFJ. Not being able to speak properly is one of the INFJās ācharmingā characteristics. You can however give the INFJ something to write on, and they will comminicate like a poet.Ā
Why is my INFJ so emo?Ā We are trying to fix this problem, but have not found a cause yet. When this is fixed, there will be a softwere update available.Ā
My INFJ is being really socially awkward and asking me weird and boring questions, what should i do? Nothing. The INFJ will usually be very stressed out when talking to new people. This will get better as your INFJ feels more comfortable around you.Ā
My INFJ is just like me, does this mean i am an INFJ myself? Nah bro, they want you to think youāre alike.Ā
Can my INFJ read minds? What no ofc not huh hehehe ehm heheā¦..Ā
My INFJ knows things about me havenāt told it. Has it developed AI? We are aware of this feature in the INFJ, but canāt offer any answer to how they do it.Ā
My INFJ has been sitting in the corner of their room staring into the air for three days. What should i do? In this situation you have a few possible solutions: a) Let your INFJ sit there. They will get back to normal in not too long⦠(hopefully) b) Give your INFJ chocolate and hugs . c) introduce your INFJ to an ENTP. The INFJ will hopefully get so distracted from their thoughts that they forget all about them. d) try turning your INFJ off and on again.Ā
Eat Timmies, drink screech, and be merry!
