Finally read Role Model - why did none of you tell me about Troy's hilarious habit of just fucking leaving mid conversation?
He'll start a sentence and then just flee when he feels too awkward. But also he's happily chilling in Harris' office with Chiron on his lap.
He's like a stray dog who wants to chill on your porch but zooms off if you try to pet it. He's waiting to be invited into conversations, he's extremely enthusiastic about his new home (Harris) when he gets a taste of experiencing queer joy in a safe environment, but he also spent most of the book on edge in case other gay people are attacked for being gay in front of him (like a dog barking when people hug because they think hugs are fighting). He's so precious to me

Shane is lonely. He knows this because there have been multiple attempts by different people in his life to make him acknowledge this. It has been an increasing concern for his parents, who previously kept their comments sparse, before his career kicked oο¬ in earnest and they could finally iron out some of his social flaws. This manifests in increasingly farfetched and undesirable suggestions - you should join a running club; you should email this influencer - you never know!; you should see if that brand ambassador could be your plus one to this event.
His friends, too, keep poking their noses in his business. They want to set him up with acquaintances, they try to get him out of the house, they make dinner plans, and invite people he doesnβt know. Strange that they think he wants to meet new people in the one night a month he has reserved for socialising. Heβs not crossing paths with Jackieβs friends again if he can help it - who pinches a personβs ass five minutes after meeting them for the first time?
Some of his friends are easier to shake oο¬ - Hayden goes quiet after a few noncommittal hums from him at the suggestion of a double date. JJ is happy if they get a beer once in a while. Rose however - Rose buys him a dog.
Shane has never been one for pets. He likes to keep his space clean and tidy at all times. To the point where he has to mentally prepare whenever he has people over. His schedule is colour coordinated with carefully timed breaks and meal times.
Β
So he has no idea why she thought a dog would fit well into his life. Regardless, this one comes with a pedigree and a price tag with an eye-watering amount of zeros on it.
She conveys all of this to him in-between bites of a 15$ Chipotle salad. The salad gets sorted like everything else in Roseβs life - the green parts first, so she can zero in on what she likes.
She groans in unrestrained delight between mouthfuls. Sheβs always had a love for food that Shane canβt help but be jealous of.
βItβll be fun! It barely needs any amount of care. You just need to feed it and play with it once in a while.β Shane reminds himself to keep looking at her nose. It's kind of gross to see someone eat, especially when he isnβt eating himself, but he likes Rose, and he doesn't want her to feel weird about it.βYour family never owned a dog before?β
βNo. My dad had one when he was little, but it was old already when he was born. Didnβt get to play with it a lot.β His mom didnβt like the concept of pets in general, so they took more trips to DCR to compensate the lack of stimuli in Shaneβs life.
βMy family loves dogs. We had a pair of them, growing up, and it was so cute to watch them play together.β She pauses to take a sip of water and Shane swallows down the urge to tell her that she shouldnβt be drinking while she eats. Sheβs eating at 11pm, so she probably doesnβt care about digestive dilution. βYouβll love it! Itβll be the perfect companion.β
The salad had been a concession to the late night munchies. Film sets stay on late into the night, and she canβt always get a meal in when she wants it.
Shane ate his own dinner after the game against LA, hunched over his tupperware while he reviewed tape on his phone. Then he drove up to her house at her insistence. Big news, she told him. Rose knew by now that calling it a βsurpriseβ wouldβve made Shane apprehensive, and she waited until the door locked behind him before the reveal.
She spends an hour trying to convince him of how good of a decision this is before she hands him an expensive-looking binder and sends him on his way.
On the drive back to the hotel, Shane scans the QR code on the front page and starts reading the hundred page long pdf. Most of it is fluff - pieces about the breeders and their positions in competitions. Famous customers they tout as success stories. There will be a page with Shaneβs face on it in the next set of documents they print.
The first three pages are what matters - care instructions and inventory, followed by a thick paragraph of attributes. The dog comes with its own set of leashes, clothes and 30 cases of premium wet food. This particular breed requires more physical activity than most, so if Shane decides to keep it, it will be a good idea to fit it into his exercise routine.
Its been trained to guard the house against intruders, or to guard him when they go out. Thankfully Shane is not at a level of fame where this is an issue, but its nice. The list of qualities goes on - tricks and competition results, languages it knows, etc. They even included that it makes for a perfect bed warmer, whatever that means.
It already has a name, which is short and simple enough to memorise despite being foreign. Shane stares at the pictures. A huge, golden haired single lineage purebreed. Its objectively beautiful in the carefully curated gallery theyβve prepared for him.
He texts the number on the back to arrange the drop off for the beginning of the off season.
The dog itself, well. He's so much more than could be described on a piece of paper. Heβs different from the pictures, for one, coat curlier in its current styling. Heβs traded in the competition sportswear for fitted black designer shorts with a matching collar and a muzzle that wraps around his head securely.
Ilya takes up the entirety of Shane's door. Heβs about the same height as Shane, but his shoulders are incredibly wide. Thickly muscled, with hardly any fat on him. Thereβs maybe less body fat than Shane wouldβve liked, actually, especially for a very active dog. Heβs as hairy as his pictures suggest, but in person he can see it's been trimmed into shape. It glows when he moves, the light catching the dusting on his arms. Here and there moles pepper Ilyaβs skin delicately. He has pretty, thick blond lashes and a full pink pout surrounded by soft-looking hair. Clearly, a dog bred for tournaments and showcases. Heβs bigger than Shane, who thought himself pretty fit before this.
A bead of sweat runs down the dogβs chest, and Shane follows it down until it hits his bellybutton. He can feel Ilyaβs body heat radiating out from where he stands several feet away. That incredible canine warmth heβs read about.
Ilya regards him with intelligent eyes, greener than in the photos, but makes no sound from under his muzzle. After a second, Shane remembers that heβs supposed to give Ilya the go-ahead for conversation. God, he can't even manage aΒ dog. No wonder his parents worry about his lack of social skills
"Hi. I'm Shane, your new owner.β He coughs. It sounds strange to say that, but it wouldβve been stranger to refer to himself as βdadβ the way some people do. βYou can walk around, get yourself acquainted." He makes a gesture towards the bedrooms and kitchen.
Ilya nods, but doesnβt respond.
"Oh! And you can speak, if you'd like.β
"Ok." The voice that comes out is low, with a Russian accent that matches with the breed's origins. "What do I call you?" Very straight to the point. Shane was expecting him to cower slightly, as he had seen with some other dogs in his past. They all seem so nervous in the videos, especially at first. Not this towering golden specimen.
"Uh, whatever you like. I donβt really have a preference.β
"Hmm, ok.β
And they leave it at that.
Shane spreads himself across the sofa with a book, one leg hooked over the armrest. He turns a page without reading it. Somewhere down the hall, a drawer opens and closes, he turns another page.
It's strange, having someone move through his space like that: the sounds of Ilya going room to room, picking things up probably, putting them down wrong. Shane stares at the same paragraph until the words stop meaning anything.
Then the dog settles on the floor between him and the door, facing away, and Shane realises he doesn't know how long it's been since he heard anything at all.
"Do you...want anything? Food, water?β
"No, thank you.β
Shane tries to remember the documents. Somewhere buried beneath paragraphs of achievements and skills, there had been a section with Ilya's 'likes and dislikesβ as well as general warnings. It had been so short, Shane had all but skipped it on subsequent read-throughs. He memorised the care instructions, at least. Everything else fell away in the way things outside of hockey usually did. Maybe there had been something there about books or toys he couldβve bought in preparation for Ilyaβs arrival. Heβs too self-conscious to pull up the pdf on his phone now, to check if he has anything at home that might interest the dog.
On his end, Ilya seems comfortable. Slightly sleepy, too, though heβs fighting to keep himself awake. Shane wonders how long his flight from Moscow to Montreal was. If there even is a direct flight.
Ilya probably just needs time to get acclimated. If he wants to sit there and stare at Shane, so be it.
The next few hours are spent in silence. The only sound is Shane idly flipping the pages of his book. The dog changes positions a few times, but keeps himself between Shane and the door. So still Shane could forget about him, if he didn't feel the weight of the dogβs attentive gaze on him.
By the time Shane finishes, the sky outside is dark, it's time for dinner and Ilya has started sagging slightly in a way that betrays his exhaustion.
He heats the tupperware labeled 'Saturday' with a stamped half moon on it. Then grabs some of Ilya's wet food and reheats that too, smiling to himself at how similar they look when he serves them up. He can almost feel Hayden chirping at him because of his βbird foodβ.
The thought of cleaning bits of meaty brown sludge from the carpet makes Shane's skin prickle.
"Get a chair," he says, already moving toward the table. "Sit with me."
The muzzle, when it comes off, is surprisingly heavy in Shane's hands. Itβs amazing that Ilya manages to remain ramrod straight with it over his face.
They eat in silence. Shane canβt think of anything to say thatβs not βhow is your premium performance diet mushβ. Heβs used to eating dinner with his parents at restaurants, and dining with his friends in their homes, but heβs never had anyone sit on his living room table with him. Most days, he doesnβt bother sitting here himself, just eats on the kitchen island.
He doesnβt know if Ilya likes the food. Presumably, this is the same thing heβs eaten his whole life, unless they gave him something different to account for the lifestyle choices Shane put on the adoption form. Ilyaβs face is set in a neutral expression thatβs impossible to read. At least he doesnβt make eye contact or speak with his mouth full, which Shane appreciates. In fact, the only time Ilya opens his mouth is after the meal is finished, to ask where Shane wants him to put the dishes. He guides Ilya to the dishwasher and takes the opportunity to open all the cabinets and show him where everything is. Shane uses maybe thirty percent of the kitchen gadgets and utensils, but his interior decorator is thorough. Also, his mother keeps purchasing plasticky objects that she swears will βchange his lifeβ. These are immediately shoved in the back of a drawer and are promptly forgotten.
They load up the dishwasher, then Shane starts his nightly ablutions. Itβs awkwardto have someone around for this, but he soldiers on, telling Ilya to strip and follow him into the bathroom. After a day spent in airports and crowded planes, Ilya definitely needs a bath. Shane strips and folds his own clothes with his back to Ilya. The dogβs shorts leave little to the imagination, and itβll be even more awkward if Ilya catches Shaneβs eyes trailing downward. At his insistence, Ilya steps into the shower and turns on the spray. Shane crowds Ilya against the far wall and gets to work untangling his hair. The view from behind isnβt helping either, but at least in this position, Ilya wonβt be looking at Shane the whole time. As per the care instructions, Ilyaβs coat requires a special shampoo and conditioning routine repeated regularly. Itβs thick and soft in Shaneβs hands, which he can feel even as it gets wet and clings to his face and neck.
He rubs shampoo methodically into it, seeing the tension leave Ilyaβs shoulders. Technically, he could let Ilya work at his own hair, but the dog is so tired at this point that heβs leaning against the wall to stay upright.
A quick rub down and a fresh set of PJs for Shane, and theyβre off to bed. Ilya continues to be quiet, but it suits Shane just fine. He stands over the newly purchased dog bed, considering, before he ultimately decides to let Ilya sleep with him for the night.
Β
Heβs never been one to cuddle with plushies or pillows. Nor does he enjoy the thought of sleeping next to someone. But he did tell Rose he'd give it an honest try. So Ilya goes on the end of the kingsized mattress, the mass of him curled at Shane's feet and up his legs.
Maybe he shouldβve considered Ilyaβs size before he offered the dog a place in his bed. The bed is big, but Ilya seems to take up all the available space. Given that Shane himself is a hockey player, thereβs not a lot of free space left. Heβs moved closer to the centre of the bed to accommodate Ilyaβs bulk. If he hadnβt gotten in first, he wouldnβt have been able to find a configuration where they both fit.
Shaneβs feet tingle where theyβre pressed to Ilyaβs warm thighs through the sheet, and he has to force himself not to wiggle them. One wrong move and heβll make contact with the dog's naked crotch. His legs are immobilised by the blanket caught under Ilyaβs body on either side of him. Shane stares at the ceiling. It's not terrible. Sleep comes easy.
He usually sleeps deeply, undisturbed by stray noises or differences in temperature. Probably a result of so many years spent rooming with sweaty bodies that snore almost as bad as they smell.
Its a surprise, then, when he opens his eyes to total darkness. He blinks up at the clock on his bedside table, and it reads 03:, the rest of it lost between bleary vision and a lack of interest about details at this late hour. It is way too early for him to be up.
Β
Heβs hot. This time of year, he sleeps naked, and that's usually enough to keep him from overheating under thin bedsheets. Even if he does get a little warm, it's never like he is now - he's soaked. His hair is wet with it.
Itβs Ilya, he realises. The dog has crept up in the night and is now plastered to Shaneβs back. Heβs being slightly crushed by the sheet between them and under Ilya. The muzzle is biting into the back of his neck, where Ilya got as close as he could before he fell back asleep.
Shane inches forward and grabs the remote for the AC. Ilya barely moves, dead to the world in the way of the truly tired. Thereβs no moving him, not at 3AM with Shaneβs sleep-weak muscles. At least Ilya is over the covers.
In the morning, Ilya remains aloof. He walks into the room after Shane, placing himself in the periphery of Shaneβs vision. Heβs assessing Shane whenever he thinks he isnβt being watched. In response, Shane moves slowly, keeps his voice low, and doesn't push. Heβd known to expect this wariness from Ilya. Shane will have to be patient and consistent while Ilya gets used to an unfamiliar environment. The best way to do that, he reasons, is to show Ilya what to expect. So he goes through his schedule, telling Ilya what their plans are for the day. Thereβs no response, even though he can feel that the dog is itching to say something.
Afterwards, Shane goes through the motions of preparing his breakfast smoothie. Then he makes another one for Ilya, swapping out almond milk for regular when Ilya smells Shaneβs and scrunches his nose at it.
Heβs already in his running outfit, and he speaks to Ilya while he ruffles through the leashes and other gear.
βLetβs do a quick lap around the block first.β That finally breaks Ilyaβs silence.
βWhat, worried I will go off chasing squirrels?β
βI can work a leash just fine. Iβm more worried about the gossipy neighbours.β Despite living in a gated community, Shane is no stranger to photos of him being taken right outside his door. Heβs been thinking of moving for a while now.
βSo no squirrels for me, then.β
βYou can have as many squirrels as you can catch after Iβve made sure the influencers two doors down arenβt out and about. I donβt want us to be on the news yet.β
This manages to wrangle a smirk out of Ilya though, which he will mark down as a win.
Shane has seen people walking dogs barefoot before, but heβs not so sure that will be the best option given that they will be running on concrete. Thankfully theyβre about the same shoe size. He thrusts some old, non Rebook branded tennis shoes and a pair of socks at Ilya, and starts applying the dogβs harness while he ties them.
The run is smooth. Ilya is clearly used to running in a pack formation. Ilya runs like he was built for it, matching Shane's pace without being asked, never pulling, the leash hanging loose between them. Shane doesn't decide to speed up so much as his legs just do it, some competitive thing firing without a target. Ilya hits the new pace in about a second. When he speeds up, laughing, Ilya is there before Shane finishes the stride.
After the first fifteen minutes, they start picking up speed. Running next to Ilya makes him want to push himself harder, just to see if Ilya can match up. He can. Every time Shane gains a burst of speed, its only a second before Ilya is right next to him again.
In a move that surprises even himself, Shane nudges Ilya with his arm mid-step, to try and trip him up. Ilya responds by laughing and tugging at the leash to keep himself upright, and they both fall into the bushes.
By the time they get back to the house, theyβre both sweaty and weak at the knees, but Ilyaβs grin stays on for the rest of the day.
The more days pass, the more Shane gets used to Ilyaβs presence. Ilya, now that heβs gotten comfortable, isΒ snarky. He always has a retort ready for when Shane asks him to perform tasks.
He does everything they said heβd be able to do - plus a whole plethora of behaviours that are not on the list. He spends an inordinate amount of time herding Shane around the house, for one, which Shane chalks up to latent livestock guardian genes.
And the peeing. Thereβs a whole lot of peeing. He knew, going in, that male dogs have a tendency to mark their territory. Even intelligent dogs like Ilya fall prey to these instincts, it seems, because he pees on everything Shane owns. He even pees in hisΒ sleep. Its happens so often that Shane started insisting Ilya sleep on the floor. Which works until Ilya figures out he can just creep up onto the bed while Shane is unconscious.
The fact of the matter is - Rose was right. His life is less lonely with Ilya in it. He likes coming home to him after a day of meetings. Likes shopping with him, the way Ilya stays close to the cart and noses at things on the lower shelves. Likes their runs.
Its good. Ilyaβs good. Dependable, well-behaved, easy to be around despite his idiosyncrasies. Shane doesnβt think about the warm feeling blooming in his chest beyond that.
After a week, Shane starts letting him out without a leash (only in areas where this is allowed, obviously). He buys a console with a handful of games Ilya seems interested in. He reaches out to his nutritionist so she can make up a meal plan for Ilya. He gets a pup phone so Ilya can contact Shane when heβs out of the house. By the end of the first month, the muzzle comes off too.
Ilya seems happy. More than thatβ he looks different. Filled out, the sharp edges of him gone soft. The gym doesn't suffer for it. If anything, Ilya goes harder now, like he has something to prove, and Shane has stopped being able to take it easy on the days they train together. But then Shane will catch Ilya in the kitchen at midnight with his head in the fridge, and the math starts adding up. The ham and cheese disappear rapidly. Now, when they buy groceries, Ilya finds a way to sneak treats into the cart. Shane pretends to be mad to keep up appearances, but he avoids the self-checkout just so he can see Ilya covertly plant snacks between other items on the conveyor belt. He always grins to himself afterwards, thinking heβs gotten away with it.
The only hiccup is the separation anxiety. The calls start around week three.
Where are you, at 8am on a Tuesday.
Where are you, during a fitting, Shane's arms out to the sides while someone adjusts his collar.
Where are you, as Shane stares at his phone in the middle of a photoshoot, backdrop white behind him, some assistant hovering with a lint roller.
Meeting, he types back.Β Why.
You didn't say you were leaving, I don't like it when I don't know where you are.Β Shane swallows a smile, sighs, and pockets his phone. On the way home he searches tracking apps he can install on Ilyaβs pup phone. Maybe if he can see where Shane is, he will stop texting.
Other than that, Ilya seems settled. In the pet cams Shane has set up, he often sees Ilya pacing back and forth. He circulates, checking windows and doors every two hours or so. He no longer pees on the furniture when Shaneβs not home, mostly because every time Shane catches him doing it, he remotely locks the Xbox so Ilya canβt play.
Theyβre fitting in well together. Heβs gotten comfortable with Ilya. Even bedtime is a cozy affair. The air-conditioning means he can sleep through the night even with Ilya at his back. He can admit, too, that having someone in bed with him is more comforting than he thought it could be. Heβs good. Theyβre good. Heβs given Ilya some boundaries and patience and things seem to be on the right track.
Then he wakes up one morning completely soaked. At first he thinks he mightβve just toppled over the glass he has on his nightstand, but no. Heβs covered in a warm liquid. He registers the smell. Musky and hot and - god what the fuck - its a stream of it. He barely has time to think before it moves from his neck to his chin and then he has to close his mouth to keep it from going in. Shane struggles and gets nowhere, overwhelmed and sleepy, pinned under a heavy body that can only be Ilya. There are thighs on either side of his head, and he manages to see Ilyaβs face haloed by sunlight right before the pee hits his eyes and he has to close those too.
Shaneβs thoughts are a jumbled mess of conflicting instincts. Heβs caught in place. His body wants to move, but his mind is screaming at him to stay still until it passes. Thereβs so much of it it threatens to go up his nose. Heβs afraid to breathe or scream because heβs sure itβll go down his throat.
Ilya presses his massive hand over Shaneβs cheeks and growls.
βFucking open. ΠΠ±Π°ΡΡ. Open your mouth!β Shane trembles, wet and confused, and resists for a second more until Ilyaβs thumb shoves in and pulls down his jaw. Then he chokes on it.
He gags, his body fighting a losing battle to dislodge Ilya from his chest. On top of him, Ilya lets out a groan of relief. Shane swallows, he canβt help it. Then Ilyaβs hand covers his mouth and nose, and he doesnβt have enough air left in him to stay awake for long.
When Shane wakes up again, heβs on his side facing the wall away from his door. The midday sun carves shadows into it but doesnβt flood the room. Ilya mustβve pulled the curtains down.
At first he thinks the shadows are moving, then he realises its him thatβs shaking back and forth. Shaneβs head lols before a hand comes up over his throat, wraps itself between his neck and jaw, and pulls it down. Thereβs now an arm over his waist, winding tight on his chest. The shadows stand still. His mouth hurts and tastes bitter. He drags his tongue over his lips and theyβre numb and pumped full with blood.
Β
Shane understands why his face has been pulled down when he feels teeth on the thin skin at the back of his neck. Itβs burning, he realises, a throbbing warmth that spreads outwards. Bites overlapping until they can't be separated visually from one another. A tongue comes out to soothe them, the skin there so abused that it doesn't register a temperature difference from the molten insides of his dog's mouth.
Β
Ilya noses at his sweat-slickΒ hair, a satisfied growl rumbling from his chest and into Shane's back where they're skin on skin.
"You did not read the instructions, sweetheart?" Shane is so buzzed it takes a moment to register that the sweetheart in this conversation is him. β'Do not leave without muzzle unattendedβ. Π³Π»ΡΠΏΠ΅Π½ΡΠΊΠ°Ρ ΡΡΡΠΊΠ°.βΒ
He did read that. Right next to the warnings about Ilya's combative nature and need for discipline. He'd seen the way the dog acted - quiet and attentive and sweet - and thought it was nonsensical to worry. Ilya didn't seem to be in need of a heavy hand. And Shane didn't have the heart for it, besides.
That decision feels very foolish now.
βItβs ok. Iβll be good to you. You can stop crying.β Shane didnβt know he was crying. He can feel it now that Ilya says it, damp on his cheeks, the hitching in his chest that keeps interrupting his breathingβ but itβs like being told about something happening to someone else. The bed is solid under him, and Shane keeps having to remind himself of that. His ears are ringing a little, or maybe that's just how quiet it is. He can still smell the urine from before, sticky on his skin.
Theyβre both so slick with sweat and other fluids that they stick together. Then Ilya slides in deep one last time and his knot bullies its way past Shaneβs rim.
I love the scene where Zeno shows Grace the clones in the RPD ruins. What stood out most to me is the way his voice wavered on the word "failures," in particular.
Then immediately afterwards he turns away and lights up a cigarette, referring to it all as "Such a waste," and their (the clones) stories as sad.
There seems to be some genuine empathy there, or at least sympathy. They, too, are supposed imitations, he thinks (incorrectly).
But he still funded Victor. He still funded a guy who tried with two clones that we know of (Emily and The Girl). A "The ends justify the means," school of thought, methinks.
We see that in how he tries to comfort(?) Grace. "What's done is done," and "Embrace your destiny." That what you have to tell yourself at night, huh, Zeno?
Zeno with his little dagger earing and his fancy ass gun with a skull on the side just makes me think that if he wasn't with the Conections he'd be in a old decrepit apartment, listening to Bauhaus and smoking weed with a baddie (gender neutral) in 6 inch platform Demonias. An Eggers film is on.
In fact, let's make this like. He and Jake are both Albert Wesker's sons AU, no zombie outbreaks, Jake the elder. They're both the failson. Wesker knows that both of his kids are smart as hell but ones a punk who keeps planting mint on golf courses and works a union job; the other's a goth who had promise but crashed out and now takes Sertraline.
The blackout curtains haven't been opened in Zeno's appartment since last year and he works in a basement book shop but models for artists at the local art college to feel something. He was accidentally a famous tumblr goth boy and has had the same account since 2008. Now posts edits of his favourite media and poems.
He has a black ratsnake called Victor that bites him no matter how often he handles him.
He and Jake meet up every so often and then just awkwardly sit there cause they don't know how to connect over much beside "Yeah, dad's an asshole," and "Hey, remember when auntie Alex made us practice Bach for 8 hours that one time?"
They keep almost connecting, but then their interests always running parallel rather than intersecting and bitter memories only do so much.
Neither have seen Wesker in years but occasionally get dry phone calls asking if they've decided to be responsible people yet.
Jake's mother raised him until she passed, and Zeno was given up to fostering for years by his before Wesker found him. He doesn't remember his mother at all. They both have massive daddy issues AND mommy issues.

Summary: But the whole family is here. And thats a problem, because if you make eye contact with Jason Todd you might just throw up.
The whole family is here, legal or otherwise. The den is all made up, baby-blues and other pastels giving a softness to the grand space in the heart of the re-built Wayne Manor. Dad's over by Tim and Aunt Kate, laughing. A full, hearty laugh. Its been a while since you've seen him laugh like that.
Even Damian is on his best behaviour, keeping Alfred (the cat) away from the remaining food - not that Duke was helping. The bright boy (man, everyone is growing up, he doesn't even have baby fat anymore) was teasing the poor thing with a slice of prosciutto, Damian scowling as Alfred's front legs extended out of the hold, paws curling as if to say "Gimme!" Even her little claws are out, eyes big like saucers.
Dick leans over the arm of the sofa, Babs beside him, going through the gifts and organising for you. Tiny little onesies being cooed over, tiny little shoes shorter than even a finger. Steph and Cass had been there, too, crowding the space right next to your armchair until Stephanie had gotten teary-eyed and gotten up with the excuse to gather more snacks. Cass had followed her to the kitchen.
Steph's toasted sandwiches are great, but times like this remind you even more so of the grandfather you miss. A gaping hole where Alfred should be.
You were here first. Bruce found you in a cage, a stolen thing about to be experimented on by Gotham's newest member of the "Don't get a Doctorate, you'll go nuts," poster children club. Small, shaking, mute from the trauma of it all.
Dick had drawn you out of your shell, just an inch. A whisper here and there, a smile and a giggle. But then he'd left, and B wasn't much of a talker anyway. A few months of the two of you, silent as the grave unless he was explaining, teaching. And you'd loved it, that companionship. You loved Dick for never giving up, but sometimes his love made you feel wrong. Dad never did. Just appreciated what you could give.
But the whole family is here. And thats a problem, because if you make eye contact with Jason Todd you might just throw up. He's over by the fireplace. It should be a joyous place to look, covered in cards from friends of the family. You hadn't wanted the baby shower to be big. Just the people closest to you. There's so many cards. The biggest, from Harley and Ivy of all people, is so damn big its sat on its own side-table, the bonsai Ivy sent as a gift hidden behind the handmade chaos.
For everyone else, the air in the room is easy. For you, his gaze presses it down like the moon pulling the waves.
You remember the night Bruce brought home him. Jason Peter Todd. For the first time, it was easy to speak when the boy across from you was just as cautious, just as crass.
He understood something in a way neither Dick nor Bruce ever could - total dehuminisation. The humiliation of eating the worst things, just to stop the pain. The filth on your skin after days or weeks of build-up. Doing things you're not proud of to survive. Not because you made a choice, like Bruce and Dick did when they faced humiliation as vigilantes. Innocent kids have no choice. You'd latched onto him, and he did the same. In the opulent shadow of billionaire Bruce Wayne, the utter genius and martial prowess of the Batman, and burning, shining rays cast down by Dick Grayson, you were a willow tree on a warm spring day.
Can you fight? Of course. Can you solve crime like the rest of your family? Naturally. But Gotham never sank her hungry fangs into you like the rest. The need to be the best at your skillset, the obsessiveness and paranoia of vigilante life, absent. You had issues enough on your own.
On nights where Bruce and Jason would argue, he'd come to your room and ask to be held. Toward the end of his tenure as Robin, he'd spend most nights there, in your soft cotton sheets. You'd always find the voice to hum a lullaby to him. Your brother. Your big brother. Almost twins, you could be. Irish twins, maybe.
And then he was gone. Ethiopia. Joker. Bomb.
Dad hadn't killed the Joker. You didn't think he could, even in hypotheticals that had plagued your mind. You could see it, presented in a newspaper. Not a photo of Batman over the Joker's dead body, a UN meeting ending in a new war's beginning; but the image of the clown, throat bruised but mouth open in laughter as a broken Batman sat with a sad Superman holding his shaking shoulders. Bruce just doesn't have it in him, you think. The code, the excuse that he would never stop if he started is just that. An excuse. Is it guilt that makes him lie? Shame that he can't end a life?
He could get close to that point, just ask KGBeast, but he couldn't cross that damned line.
But you had. It took a year, but you did. Not in a costume, just as yourself, as a poor kidnapped civilian acting in self defence. Dick had found you first, still as the night, face full of blood and a bullet graze on your ribs. The clown lay throatless on the floor. Quiet, for once. He'd never speak again. Never laugh. Never taunt anyone with your brother's name.
Sometimes you think about doing the same to Bane, for Alfred. But then you think about it logically, and know that you're the one who wouldn't walk away from that fight.
No jail time, name protected from the public, of course. It wasn't deemed to be in the public interest to prosecute. You were a minor and the Joker's reputation was a black mold running through Gotham's streets. To this day, very few knew who had finished him off.
The only reason why Bruce didn't give you a nice vacation to a mental hospital in Metropolis was the lack of evidence that it was planned. He was right, of course. It wasn't. You'd just hoped that the bastard would try something, and like the rabid animal he was, he did. He'd already gone after Babs for being Commissioner Gordon's daughter, killed Jason, and while Dick had fled the nest he knew then that the Batman had another bird amongst the twigs. Thank god Tim was still cave-bound, training.
Anxiety and fear used to be the howling dogs keeping you up at night, but it was a red hot rage that had plagued you then. Still, eyes focused on the shadows as you had imagined taking the clown down. Still the way you were after, when the rage had subsided and nothing was left.
It didn't help the grief. Didn't bring your brother back. He might have even been alive at the time, but he doesn't remember through the fog that covers crawling out of his grave to being pushed into the Lazarus Pit. It didn't make it easier to smile when you saw Tim wearing the suit, a distance held between the two of you because god - if you lost another? If you lost this clever little boy, too? It might break you once and for all. A distance closed, over time. He's a sweet boy, even if his mouth moves before his brain sometimes.
Dad was like the world's most clammy blanket in the aftermath, so much so that you'd used ever trick to escape the house once or twice, finding your way to Robinson's Park. That's where you'd met Ivy. She was a good friend in those months, another quiet presence eager to teach - this time botany instead of blood spatter patterns. Her own way of saying thank you on Harley's behalf, you think, before she'd come to grips with her abuser actually, truly being gone.
But Jason, sweet, empathetic, smart, angry, loyal Jason, had come back. He'd brought the rain with him, and misery. But it had cleared the humidity from the house for you, if none of the others.
He was more angry than he used to be, even in his worst outbursts. Big, mean, principled in his own way and desperate. Desperate for Bruce to prove his love, unable to deal with the answer so he killed and killed, attacked Dick and Tim, even Damian once he arrived on the Manor's doorstep. Bruce and Dick compartmentalised. Called him a monster. You saw it for what it was. Jason was finding the line, finding how far he could go and still be welcomed back.
And he was tired. More tired than any 19 year old should have been, jaded and convinced that the world won't change without death. He still holds that belief, you think. But its tempered, sacrificed for love.
He's huge now, but you look at him and he's still that little boy crying in your bed because he couldn't measure up to Dick. Its what makes this whole thing so insidious. Recognising the innocence that premeditated the sinner.
Your eyes meet his, finally. He's nursing a craft beer, backlit by the flames. He's been looking at you all afternoon, doesn't even bother to hide it. And you can't, can't stay in the room anymore when he knows you see him, too.
Especially when you glance over to your dad, see his eyes going back and forth between Jason and a Red Hood onesie piled on top of the others with a gentle look softening his wrinkling face. Absurdly, you wonder if he'll book botox appointments or let the crows feet come.
He hasn't said anything. No one has. If there's surprise, it hasn't been shown, but Bruce had seemed the least shocked when you had announced your pregnancy. You should have known he'd put one and two together when he'd backed off on finding the father. Just one and two. He doesn't and never will have the full picture.
Bruce had seemed to predict this years ago. He'd see Jason coming from your room in the morning instead of his own, and his brows would furrow. He's Batman. He's researched enough of the foster and adoption system to know its flaws. He knows how sometimes adoptive siblings might not love each other as siblings. But he'd never said anything, either, too afraid to be wrong and corrupt the sweet relationship you and Jason had had. He would have been wrong, back then. Now? Half-wrong.
"Oh, god, I think the morning sickness is coming back," you gasp out, standing with a hand on your round belly. There's sounds of concern behind you as you stumble to the nearest bathroom (Babs, maybe, she and Dick were the closest and would have heard you), but you don't hear any of the words. Just your own heartbeat clattering in your chest like your feet on the marble floors. Wasn't there a runner rug in this corridor?
Cold water, thats what you need. A bit of frost on your neck to calm the incessant heat, to wash out the building saliva from your nausea. The tap is running, right? You can hear water. You can feel it on your fingers.
"They all know he's mine. I don't know why we're still hiding it."
The chill of the water feels like nothing compared to the ice in your veins. Did the bomb that blew him up feel as forceful as the way you slam back into your body at the sound of his voice?
And yeah, you know. Everyone knows, but not a single person has broached the topic, because they have the how and why of the situation wrong.
"Go away, Jason," you try to beg, refusing to look up, refusing to see even his reflection in the mirror. But these days, finding words for Jason Todd feels like pulling teeth.
He doesn't give you the choice of space. He brings the heat back with him, his whole front against your back, his hands cupping your stomach, thumb stroking. You used to play with his hair when he slept in your bed. Traced nonsensical patterns against his back to make his shoulders relax.
"You need some crackers? They usually settle your stomach." His lips meet your temple, chaste and stinking of alcohol as his breath wafts across your face. You're almost used to it. He's been so attentive throughout the pregnancy. Drinking less, too. But tonight is a celebration, and he's only had half a bottle.
Swallowing becomes a chore, but you have to. You have to keep your gag reflex in check. You won't stop if you start. It won't be good for the little one, getting that worked up. You just have to not look at him.
Vision hazy with tears, your eyes drift away from his hands. Not up, not into the mirror, you look right and have to swallow all over again when the porcelain of the bathtub creeps into your vision. Left. Have to look left at the old painting instead.
But its too late. Just a glimpse of the tub, with his breath and hands all over you, and you're back there to that night.
A silent manor - truly and utterly. No one in the cave. No Alfred in the newly rebuilt kitchen. He would have loved it. Now you were the most likely to be found there, slowly filling his role as caretaker of the house. You even tended Grandma Martha's rosebed. A shotgun rested below your bed. You just needed a little penguin suit of your own.
No one else there that night. Just you, and Damian's menagerie, already asleep in the barn or their beds. He and Bruce were in Metropolis, Jon's birthday. Dick over in Blud. Cass, Tim and Steph watching over Gotham. Duke already back with his mom after she woke up from her coma. Kate and Renee out on a date.
The water had felt so good. Reaching deep into your sore muscles after your workout - a spar with Cass to keep you sharp. Plenty knew who was behind Batman's mask, and it was wise for you to stay prepared lest they think you a weak link for not joining your siblings in the night.
The bubbles had smelled of cinnamon and green apple, something new you wanted to try. On the counter, your phone lowly played music. There's a whole playlist you can't listen to anymore.
You'd sank beneath the water, letting the bassy thudding of your hands moving through the water replace the lonely wailing of your speaker for just a moment. The light from the ceiling fixture shone down through the bubbles, your eyes closed to protect from the soap.
The door hadn't been locked. Why would it have been? The house had security better than Fort Knox.
Hence why the first reaction you'd had to a shadow falling over your body was to lash out fists-first, only stopping once your head was above water and you recognised the laugh from the man now holding your wrists.
"Fucking hell, Jason!" you'd yelled, eyes still closed against the soap before his warm, dry hands had come and wiped your face for you.
The soapy water had hidden your body from view, not that it mattered in this house. Vigilantes. More than used to cutting off each other's costumes to stitch up wounds, or prop each other up in the shower when their partner couldn't stand up themself. You'd cared for all of your siblings when they'd been injured, and your dad too. Seen all of them vulnerable. Even if you didn't end up in the same situations, it had felt like nothing for Jason to be there. Your brother. Your almost-twin. You'd slept in the same bed countless times, changed in front of each other. Whispered about your first kisses in the dark, giggling.
He'd stopped killing for you. To see you without Bruce stalking every meet-up before delivering a stern lecture or starting a fight. You, who he never doubted loved him. You, who he had never hurt. His exception, his softness in a world that seemed to be made of sandpaper.
He'd looked good that night. Flushed, full cheeks. A bright smile. Hair a little messy but styled. His leather jacket, which usually sat so handsomely on his wide shoulders, was probably left at the cubby by the door with his boots. A far cry from the snarling mess you found in a run-down apartment just off the Bowery when he first came back. So different from the skinny boy that used to sit by your baths, reading books while you bathed.
"You're not out tonight?" you'd sank back as you asked, head resting, body lax.
Jason had shook his head, smile settling into something softer, warmer. "Nah. The rest have got it covered. Just wanted to see you, y'know?"
Drops of water had dripped down your arm as you raised it out of the water, gripping his where it loosely rested the lip of the tub.
"Yeah, I know. Been a while since it was just us. Too many damn people coming in and out of this house."
Smiles for the both of you, then. Remembering the days when Wayne Manor was a lot quieter, the library a sacred space for you and him. He'd still find you there on most days, sinking into the couch of the reading nook beside you, resting his weary soul as you read aloud.
Your brows had furrowed when he leant down, a tad unsteady in his movement, and began tugging off his socks. Is he drunk again? He gets like this, sometimes. Forgets he can come to you and sinks into a bottle, and you'll wake to him hovering over your bed. Half of the time its like the gravity of his life is pulling the tears from his eyes, but the rest are like this. He's giggly, happy.
"Jay, you're not fitting in here." A protest, half-serious. You'd chosen a bedroom with a smaller tub in the on-suite, easier to sit up and not slip below the water.
He'd hummed, in acknowledgement or dismissal you weren't sure.
His t-shirt followed, jeans and boxers flying off and ending up in the sink as you crawled up to make room despite your words. Only, he hadn't sat in front of you. Jason pushed you forward to the middle of the tub, climbed in behind and pulled you between his legs. His arms, thick with muscle, circled your middle and kept you trapped even as you'd squirmed.
"You could have waited if you wanted a hug!" you'd squealed, hiking your shoulder up when his stubble scratched your neck. It was still a joyful squeal at that point. Still just you and Jay, comfy and playful.
"I love you, y'know that?" Those words, sweetly muttered against your cheek, clued you in to exactly how drunk he was. He had trouble verbalising his feelings when they weren't born of fury, a trait shared with your dad. But that and the smell from his mouth? Oh yeah, Jason was hammered.
"Obviously. I love you, too. Always." You'd settled back, not wanting to start a playfight and risk Jason hurting himself in the slippery bathroom.
It had seemed like a good idea; him behind, his arms pinning yours so you couldn't play with his hair, couldn't make him fall asleep. As strong as you are, wrestling his dead weight, soaking wet from the tub hadn't sounded like a good time.
A mistake. You'd felt it then, against your back. Felt it with the groan he'd let out and the big, scarred hand that dropped between your drawn-up legs to pet your lower stomach. He was half-hard, pressed against your back.
'If I had gotten up, would it have happened?' you'd wonder later. 'Did he think I made the first move?' A stupid thought. You remember what you had said to him, the way you'd begged him to stop. It didn't even make him pause, pulling you onto his lap, pulling you onto him, after his fingers had gone ever lower. Water made tile and stone slippy, but skin-on-skin still rubbed. He had seemed conscious enough of that to get you wet first. An uncoordinated mouth had sloppily travelled over your shoulders before he'd forced your head to turn for a proper kiss. And once again, with tears in your eyes, you'd settled into pliancy for Jason Todd. He was drunk. If you kept struggling, he might get hurt.
The same mouth is on your shoulders now, just with a layer of wool between you and those lips. When the warmth meets your neck, you sob, crumbling down but never meeting the floor. He has you. Jason has you. And there won't be anyone coming to check.
Why would they? No matter what, your family out in the den thinks that there's always one thing they can trust Jason with. You.
Maybe he'll break his promise and kill again. Maybe he'll pick a fight with Bruce or any other bat. Maybe he'll say something cruel and unnecessary, just because he woke up feeling insecure and needs to test the definity of his place here.
And so long as you keep the secret, that's all on him. So you sag and let the tears fall as your brother, your almost-twin, your lover holds you up. Because thats what he is now. Gentle, giving, insatiable.
You won't be the reason why your father grieves his son again. You won't give him a reason to grieve you even as you live, no matter how many times that night has repeated over the years. Your boy is hope. A new member of the family. Bruce is so eager to be a grandfather. You've seen wedding venues open on his search tab when you've dipped into his office.
Most days you can pretend. You can pretend that Jason still brings you the comfort he once had. Most days you don't need to pretend.
Even now, even in the midst of terrifying memories, your body instinctively clings closer. It yields to his petting, lets him pull you into his lap as he leaves kisses over your tear-stained face. His shirt has been stretched down, a scar on his shoulder blade peaking out. Teeth. Yours. You'd left it one time he'd come to you, the house full. To keep quiet. It might have been the night your son was conceived. The mark Jason had left was far more consequential than your own.
Sometimes you see him stroking it the same way he does your tummy. The smile he has when he does isn't gentle. There's a hunger there, one you know well. That desperation, plain to see.
"I want to name him after my mom. Catherine, of course. Not her actual name, but something similar, something that fits a boy. Casey, maybe? Caleb? We'll have to think about it, yeah? Casey or Caleb Todd."
And you just nod against his chest. Because everyone in that den knows that Jason Todd got you pregnant. They think the shame of legal sibling status is what keeps you quiet. The worry over what the tabloids will say when he comes, when a name is put down on that birth certificate under Father. They'd be all over it. The missing prodigal son, supposedly back after years as an amnesiac kidnappee, and the quiet child who stayed from the limelight. You can hear Vicki Vale's voice right now.
And you nod because, despite it all, you still love him. It would be easier if you loved him how he loves you, but sandpaper worlds spared no one their grazes. That same love got you where you are now, a few months away from delivery. Because you couldn't grieve Jason Todd again, either, even the piece of him growing inside of you that you could have been rid of.
Notes: This is the reader's POV, so here's how Jason's doing in this fic. Oh boy Jason is in delusion town in this one. Absolutely refuses to reckon with what he's done, because if he does the peace he's about to build might crumble. Also, I know most fans make him a girl dad, but I gave him a little boy because the angst of seeing a carbon copy of himself and fearing he may grow into the same type of person is delicious to me, even if the baby isn't born yet here. Hope you enjoyed!
Wow, it seems like only yesterday that a couple of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed fans announced the first JayTim Week. While those founding mods have since moved on, the ship week itself is still chugging along just as strong as everβa whole decade later!
We had a lot of grand ideas while brainstorming for this year's JayTim week. There have been a lot of events (sometimes more than one in a year!), in a lot of different ways (longtime fans will remember the epic JayTim BINGO Month of 2019), and over the years we've had a heckuva lot of prompts. Why not pull on all that history to make something unique and special?
This year, JayTim "Week" will span 10 whole days, from June 19th through June 28th, 2026βone day for each year. To pick prompts for each day, our dedicated mods compiled the past prompts (all 301 of them), weeded out the repeats, and randomly divided them between the 10 days. Then, to mix things up a bit more, we made a picker wheel for each day.
To decide on your prompt(s) each day, simply spin the wheel and let fate decide. Since we don't have a free day this year, each wheel also includes a Free Day!, bringing the total number of possible options for each day up to a whopping 25 prompts (wow)!
Day 1 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 2 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 3 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 4 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 5 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 6 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 7 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 8 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 9 Prompt Picker Wheel
Day 10 Prompt Picker Wheel
The sidebar of the event blog has been updated and includes a page with the above prompt picker wheel links for easy reference, as well as a list of frequently asked questions. If you have questions, please check that page first! If you canβt find your answer, please donβt hesitate to reach out to us via our Ask Box.

Be it in a platonic or romantic way, if you could, would you cuddle with your Blorbo at night?
Yes
No

Every poll on this blog is about fictional characters only. This request was sent to us and we made a poll in response to it. Send any Blorbo-related question you want to our inbox and weβll make a poll on which people can vote with their own Blorbos in minds
A modern-day, just-started-as-Batman Bruce Wayne, born about 2000-ish is extremely funny to me.
Alfred: Sir, I must insist that you go to bed already. I understand how important it is to you that you finish this work, but you should know better than anyone else that sleep deprivation causes a lack in judgement.
Bruce: I'm not tired, and besides, I'm nearly done.
Alfred: Oh, you are? Well, why don't you pull the head off of your fursuit, Master Wayne, and we'll see how tired you look.
At this point any typing noises cease, a quick double-take jerking Bruce's neck before he settles on Alfred, gaping in shock - or offense.
Bruce: Fursuit? Who taught you that? And- and I'm not! Its not!
Alfred: The DeviantArt account you had in your early teens dedicated to The Great Mouse Detective Original Character you drew says otherwise, Sir. Now please, shower and then make your way upstairs.
The butler leaves after a harsh sniff, brushing a hand over his perfectly clean should.
Bruce is still frozen, hands out and hovering over his keyboard like a bad Dracula impression, mouth working like a guppy as the phrase Devil's Sacrament circles his brain like a virus.
List of Jason Todd/Red Hood's weapons/gadgets/touys
Note: This is mostly from comics written by Winick, as I refuse to acknowledge most of n52. Feel free to add more, though!
Note2: This post was originally formatted in a different way, as I foolishly forgot about the image limit.
Blades
1β His iconic dagger!
Can cut through stone, and most of Batman's gear. It's been heavily debated what kind of knife it is; wether a kris, a parrying dagger, or a third secret thing.
2β The blades he gives Mia to defend herself!
I'm not sure what kind of blade they are, they vaguely look like wakizashis? Their size varies from panel to panel so idkπ
3β The katana for the 'duel' with Oliver!
4β And to link with the next section, the exploding katana!
Yes, it's a katana that explodes. Jason baits Oliver into holding it.
Explosives
β First of all, he blows up many many things and it's not specified what exactly he uses. So the unspecified explosives that only appear as a cool fireball panel get a bullet point.
5β The jumble of explosives in the Final Confrontationβ’οΈ, we can see some dynamite, C4...
6β Bomb in a crate
7β Small bomb. Not lethal!
8β Bigger bomb. Yes lethal.
9β Continuing with this absolute icon: the bomb under the Batmobile (should I capitalize that?)
10β Small Rocket, used against Brick
11β Grenade?
12β Small, cylinder-shaped explosives. Detonated upon impact?
13β Small explosive that attaches to flat surfaces, used against Mr Freeze
14β Grenade.
15β Molotov Cocktail
16β Enough C4 to destroy a whole building, modded so it explodes if its temperature reaches one point, countering Batman's method of freezing bombs.
17β My absolute favorite, the exploding helmet!
Even if it's listed under 'explosives', it's also an important piece of technology in the Red Hood's arsenal.
Firearms
18, 19β The guns in the wall from Annual #25, there's surely more.
20β Machine guns hidden in crates!
21β Machine guns hidden in cars!
22β Rocket launcher, used against Black Mask
23β Even more hidden machine guns! This time in an electricity pole.
24β Machine gun (also hidden, but surprisingly not attached to anything)
25β Handgunπ
26β AK-47, you know the panel from where it's from
27β Submachine guns, I think π
28β When out of ammo he uses his guns as blunt weapons, which I wanted to note
Tasers
29β The nazi-killing taser
30β The reason for the creation of this post! The grapple line taser! Attach it to a grapple line and it will shock whoever is connected to it. Noticed it in a reread of utrh and needed people to see it
31β Bonus: the bat-symbol taser. Iconic enough to be here.
Tech & Surveillance
32β Monitor and microphone?
33, 34β cameras :)
35β thing to see the feed of the cameras
36, 37β phones :)
38β his little tech den in #650
39, 40β computers :)
41β whatever this thing is
42β The surveillance device that looks like he taped a canon camera to his face
43β Wiretaps!
44β Bugs!
He also has his evil lair in B&R2009 bugged.
Miscellaneous
45β Does his crowbar count
46β smoke bomb!!
47β Injectable adrenaline. He just has that in his utility belt.
48β His batmobile-evade suit.
49β Is saying his belt buckle mean
50β Unspecified poison! Goodbye Egon
51β This thing that attaches to its target and launches them off
Not pictured:
The fancy wound dressing he gives onyx to patch up the shoulder wound he inflicted (I forgot to screenshot π)
Also, he has this whole hq-ish thing in Annual #25
(Edit: That rectangle in the gun wall kinda looks like an anti-drone gun now that I think abt it)

I love Chicago's coyotes so much. The only time I've ever seen pups was in Graceland so I think some coyote mama must be coming back every year.
A few things I learned from my hyperfixation on Chicago's coyotes!
Chicago did not release coyotes into downtown as pest control decades ago, that's an urban myth, but the city does officially approve of and protect our colony of about 2,000 urban coyotes because they keep the rats and rabbits in check.
In Chicago as in most urban areas, coyotes are non-aggressive to humans and dogs generally; the two exceptions are in February during mating season and when there are pups nearby. If you see pups and no adult? Walk swiftly away. If you are walking your dog in a suburban or rural area during February, do not let it off leash.
"Coyote" attacks on humans in Chicago, particularly attacks on children, are invariably later found to have been off-leash dogs. If you are walking your dog in urban Chicago, unless you are in an enclosed dog park, do not let it off leash.
Studies of coyote spoor in Chicago and outlying suburbs indicate that coyotes mainly eat rodents and garbage, but are known to eat cats. If you aren't aware by now that your cats should be kept indoors or in controlled outdoor environments only, you must be very new to Tumblr.
In any dispute between human and coyote in Chicago I have come to the conclusion I should side with the coyote. Don't @ me, I have a more aggressive prey drive than they do.
