Can you believe it! Torn apart by dogs again!
Gustave Caillebotte - The Floor Scrapers (1875-6)
Original on top, later version below
“Despite the effort Caillebotte put into the painting, it was rejected by France’s most prestigious art exhibition, The Salon, in 1875. The depiction of working-class people in their trade, not fully clothed, shocked the jurors and was deemed a ‘vulgar subject matter.’
The images of the floor scrapers came to be associated with Degas’s paintings of washerwomen, also presented at the same exhibition and similarly scorned as ‘vulgar’”.

I certainly have experienced many moments when my own faith seems to be answered—or, maybe more accurately, fulfilled, a moment of being so replete and consummate that the word "faith" just falls away. How to make a life out of these moments? How to turn this mystical sense of God into a daily faith? How to simply rest in God? These are questions I still struggle to answer.

Stuary Tubaweswa for NPR
“The stars, the mountains, the sea, and all the things that speak to us of time, convey God’s supplication to us. By waiting humbly we are made similar to God. God is the only good. That is why he is waiting there in silence. Anyone who comes forward and speaks is using a little force. The good which is nothing but good can only stand waiting. Beggars who are modest are images of Him.”
— Simone Weil, “The Things of the World”

Eliza Griswold, Wideawake Field
People sometimes say that God becomes clearer in moments of suffering, but this is not necessarily true. What becomes clear is one's longing for God. Everything is stripped away, and very little else seems to matter.
