I joked about this earlier but I'm curious now:
have you ever studied Latin?
yes
no
doesn't matter if you remember any of it now
See yeah, 200 people (at the time of this reblog) is obviously neither definitive nor likely representative of tumblr at large, but I do not think I would get a 45% yes rate to this question in many other forums. 😂
If you study German and struggle especially with the grammatical genders - let me tell you what I always tell the people comming to me for help with German.
Grammatical genders can be tricky. If you have to do declension on the articles, adjectives and nouns respectively according to the nouns gender - it can go wrong quickly if you dont know what (randomly assigned) gender it has. Or well... what case to use.
And you know what? Thats fine. Don't care too much about it all for now. If your goal is to be able to hold conversations and understand as much as possible - so normal everyday language use - and not write 100% perfect accademic essays ... it doesnt matter that much.
We will be able to understand you just fine even if the grammatical genders are all over the place. When you listen more and more to natives you will automatically get the hang of der, die, das with some time.
Sooo curious now! What are all those words for borage?
wrth gwrs, anything for you anon:
If anyone doesn't know: Borage is a star-shaped blue (edible) flower that I would share a photo of but I can't find any with a listed photographer to credit.
Trafod yr Ych is the term I mostly hear. Which would mean 'Ox Tongue' or something like that. It's also sometimes called Tafod y Buwch which would be 'Cow tongue' instead. This is probably referencing the leaves to be like cow/ox tongues in shape and texture
Bara Gwenyn - beebread which is also an English colloquial term for borage since borage attracts a lot of bees (which is a good reason to plant some)
Blodau Baill - Pollen flowers (there's a reason bees like borage)
Bronwerth - which I'm pretty sure means 'nearly worth' as opposed to 'breast worth' but maybe I'm wrong. It's a hard term to find any history on unfortunately .
Didrist - un-sad. Borage was used historically to ward off sorrow hence 'un-sad'. I can't find any evidence that borage would help with distress except in the sense that it's anti-inflammatory.
Lawenlys - Merry herb. '-lys'/'-llys' in this case is quite an old affix similar to the English '-wort' that comes at the end of some herbs and plants. Reasoning for this name is the same as above.
Glesyn Cyffredin - as I said in my previous post - common blue (same as the butterfly). It's a pretty blue flower so why not I suppose?
If you know any regional information on welsh terms for borage and which ones you would use, please tell me.
I am a big fan of freezing borage in ice cubes to use in iced drinks in the summer. But they also add plenty of pretty as a garnish in salads as well.
For YEARS I've complained that the southern version of the Dysgu Cymraeg coaster wasn't southern enough for my tastes, but at last Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol have given me the "moyn dishgled?" of my dreams

finally decided to make a mega folder with all the resources and articles and anything i can find about aragonese (there are some articles that are even about catalan of aragon!). obviously there aren’t very many things but i’ll add to it as things come out, since i am expecting that the future can only (hopefully) get better for the language <3
i just updated the link bc i reorganized the folders, it is now separated into aragonese and catalan from aragon
just updated the folder with the aragonese-spanish-catalan dictionary that the aragonese language academy recently published!
knowing multiple languages is actually so crazy because i was talking to myself yesterday and was like "oh je vais spread la mantequilla de 땅콩 ahora and ay 씨발 ¿dónde está el 칼? ah chépa. jeg sov ikke i natt that's pourquoi chuis tired et muy incoherente. ah ça gir mening sí... 아이고 qu'est-ce que je fais en ce moment, c'est 미친...!"
and that was a completely normal stream of thought.
