So much for domesticity, she thought in panic as smoke slowly wafted up from the oven, the meal she’d spent the last hour preparing now a charred heap of the stove. Cal had a late practice that night and she had hoped to surprise him with a homecooked meal. She almost could have pulled it off, if she had been graced with even an ounce of culinary skill…
She bit her lip, thinking she maybe had enough time to salvage the situation and order delivery when she heard the front door open. Crap! “Babe, I’m so sorry!” she called out, wincing at the sight of the absolute mess he was walking into. Plates and bowls scattered across the counter and piled up in the sink. A stray bit of tomato paste that had somehow ended up on the cabinet. She spun around to find him standing in the doorway. “I tried to make dinner… Surprise?”
cal noticed that something was off the moment he walked into the house, tipped off by the unpleasant smell of smoke and phoebe’s shouted apology. he dropped his duffel bag where he stood and followed the distinctive, alarming sizzling and crackling sounds of a freshly extinguished fire until he was standing in the kitchen doorway. his brows lifted in surprise at the mess of dishes and charred food, and at his wife standing in the middle of it all.
the jolt of fear that had enveloped him upon smelling the smoke and hearing her shouting from somewhere in the house began to subside once he saw her and realized that she appeared frazzled and embarrassed, but not hurt. “well, at least you’re cute when you’re covered in...” cal wiped a smear of thick red goop off of her cheek and inspected it with a frown. “...tomato sauce?” he guessed, wrinkling his nose as he reached for the nearest dish towel. “let’s open a few windows and throw out all the burnt food. we can worry about the dishes after we’ve figured out something else for dinner.” he cradled her face in his hands and pressed a comforting kiss to her forehead. “okay?”

“where the cards were when you were in tenth grade…?” stacy could go on and on about the history of tarot and animistic religions, but she chose instead to answer cal simply, “it doesn’t work like that,” she leaned forward, the serious tone still in her voice. “it’s all about, like, the internal, grueling questions, dude. it can’t answer a math question, it’s got to be something like, uh, ‘will my baseball season be prosperous?’ alright, man, now that you know the basic guidelines, do you have a real question to ask?” she reached forwards for the cards, beginning to shuffle them back and forth in her hands. “if you really want to know where this deck was when you were in tenth grade, it was probably with my mom during her road trip across the eastern seaboard.”
it doesn’t work like that. his brows knit together and he frowned in bewilderment. if the cards can’t answer questions about math, then the assertion that the cards can answer any question you may have does not seem to ring true in his opinion, but cal doesn’t point it out. “i know the basic guidelines?” he asked instead, skeptical and still frowning as he watched stacy shuffle the cards. “since when?” a real question. cal huffed at the example that she gave. it was so close to what he was thinking of asking that it was almost word - for - word, sans prosperous. since stacy had used it as her example, cal didn’t feel like he could recycle it for his question and mere seconds later, he decided that he was stumped. “i don’t know what to ask.”

He frowned, not particularly convinced that someone would be looking at him and not his much more famous and better looking cousin. His disbelief may have been rooted in his desire to not speak to anyone of the opposite sex for a long, long time. His cousin could read him like a book because despite his pretend look of shock and shake of his head, he figured he could still see right through him. “That’s not true!” he lied, eyes darting to his drink. “I don’t know.” he finally responded, giving in. Although he did know why he didn’t want to go up and talk to the girl across the bar. Sighing, he brought the glass up to his lips to take a long sip of his drink. “I’m just..not ready.”
even if the woman was checking him out and not his cousin, cal was, of course, not interested. his fingertips brushed over the wedding band on his left hand and he began twisting it around : an unconscious habit that had formed soon after his and phoebe’s spring nuptials. cal suspected that emmett was not as skeptical of his observational skills as he was claiming to be, but he didn’t know for certain until emmett sighed and explained his lack of interest in...well, moving on, cal supposes. being married to the same girl he’s been with since high school, he feels unqualified to offer advice on the topic. he’s never had a bad break up, so he doesn’t know the first thing about moving on. “it’s been a while, dude,” he carefully commented instead, “don’t you wanna find someone new?”

a long day at work is rewarded with a blt sub and a coke , his best friend at his side ( his rescue from the shelter ) in a lot of ways max and antonio were a lot alike . they both had been beaten down to the point they wanted to quit but yet they were both standing tall. seeing the massive dog race to the other , he followed suit ❝ i’m sorry . i promise he’s gentle . ❞ he calls for the dog and the great dane returns to his side ❝ you alright ? ❞

the car he drives is a rather conspicuous one, and it’s not just because he drives a matte red custom sports car that he splurged on at the age of eighteen because someone in major league baseball thought that it was a good idea to give an eighteen year old rookie a massive signing bonus. as he rolled to a stop and parked on the street, the engine made the awful noise that he just hasn’t gotten used to since it started happening out of nowhere one day. the moment that he opened the door to climb out of his car, cal saw whiskers and paws and a wagging tongue eager to greet him. “it’s okay,” he promised the person who seemed to be the dog, “all good, dude. what’s his name?” asked cal as he finally climbed out of the car.

he was picking at the sticker on his own beer when cal spoke, his eyes drifted up. “boston?” he took a minute to catch up with the question that had been asked of him. “i drive down there often to see some of my friends from harvard. many of them stayed in the city and are now practicing lawyers,” he cleared his throat. “what about you? wait, nevermind, that’s a silly question. of course you go to boston, that’s where your work is…” tejay was biting his lower lip, waiting for something. usually he was so amicable and able to hold a conversation like no tomorrow. yet he felt was about reconnecting with a piece of his past. cal was little when tejay’s parents had passed away, but tejay remembered every detail of his life with his parents. he remembered meeting cal and bella as babies a few times when his mom went to visit her friends. he remembered game nights with the morgan family, where he felt too old to be playing “baby games,” but he stayed quiet and went along with his parents’ plans. cal looked nothing like the tot tejay remembered, but it had been over a decade since they’d last talked in person. “why wellcliff? wouldn’t it be better to live in the big city?”
friends from harvard. cal snorted, amused at how casual tejay seemed to be about it. cal had received several scholarship offers, but did not attend college. instead he signed a huge contract, and was handed far more money than he had ever seen in his entire life at the age of eighteen. one of the first things he did was purchase the house which remains his permanent residence. wellcliff was one of the areas he decided to look at because it was far enough from boston for him to feel like he was independent of his parents, but not so far that going back to play baseball would feel like a slog. “i’m learning how to surf,” he said with a shrug, choosing an answer that was more fun, but still true. "you know stacy? i go with her sometimes. i don’t know how good i am, though, because she’s obviously still way better than me and i think if i asked her how i was doing then i’d just get my feelings hurt.” cal grinned and took a small sip of his beer. “how about you?” he asked, “how’s the whole..city managing thing? how does it work?”

Emmett was enjoying his night out with his cousin. It was nights like these where they hung out and spent the night laughing that reminded him how luckily he was to have Cal living in the same town as him. When they were younger, the two of them were close but as they got older, Emmett started to realize how similar they really were. Emmett swirls his drink around in his class, the caramel liquid gracing the inside of his glass. “Oh?” he replies, awkwardly craning his neck to see who he was talking about. Emmett was the furthest thing from subtle sometimes. He swallows a lump in his throat, almost certain that he wasn’t going to enjoy where this conversation was going to go. “Me? Nah. She’s definitely checking you out! She probably wants an autograph or something.”
be subtle, he tried to warn, but emmett had turned his whole head to look at the woman before cal could get the words out. he struggled to suppress a grimace and lifted his glass from the counter to take a sip of his drink, suddenly feeling as though he really needed it. “she’s not even looking at me,” he pointed out, confident because it had been true when he last checked a minute or so earlier, and although that was more than enough time for a change to occur, cal didn’t think that it had. his attention returned to his cousin, and he regarded him for a moment. “you just don’t wanna talk to her,” cal decided, continuing with a frown rather than allowing emmett time to respond. “come on, why not?”

stacy has a towel laid against the sand, on top lays a candle in a glass jar, her favorite rose gold pendulum with a triangle tip, and a tarot deck she’s had for too many years to count. the witch’s house might not be the spookiest thing in wellcliff, stacy’s family is considered strange among many for their interest in what the townspeople call “the occult.” stacy and her mother call it wicca and rituals. she digs through her bag for a lighter. when she finds it, she flicks the flame into life and and holds it to the candle. “are you ready for secrets to be unburied and truths to be revealed?” she whispers in a cryptic voice. “the cards will answer any questions you have.”
cal was seated on his own towel in the sand, small frown on his face and trepidation in his gaze as he considered the items in front of him. he agreed to the tarot reading for the same reason the he agrees to most things : he was too polite to say no. "um, sure.” cal shrugged and glanced down at the cards. he stifled the urge to reach for one and examine it up close, instead pressing his palms into the towel beneath him as he leaned backward. “what i wanna know is where these things were when i was in the tenth grade,” he informed stacy, lazily pointing to the cards and snorting in amusement. “i really could’ve used the answer to any questions i have back in geometry class.”
he’s caught her staring a few times since he and his cousin first walked into the bar. cal wasn’t going to alert emmett because he figured that the woman was watching and waiting until he was finished with his drink or still working up the courage to approach him, but after several glances over emmett’s shoulder, he figured that his cousin would soon realize that he didn’t have cal’s full attention. he gestured for him to lean in close and subtly nodded towards the corner of the room where the woman was standing. “that chick over there in the red dress has been checking you out all night,” cal smirked and gave him an encouraging little pat on the shoulder, “you should go talk to her.” / @itsemmett

cal took a sip of his beer and struggled to suppress a grimace when his slurping noises shattered the awkward silence. he set the bottle down on the table and began drumming his fingers on the sticky wooden surface. “so, uh...” cal lifted his head and glanced at tejay, who was seated on the other side of the table. he has vague memories of playing board games and sitting through a few dinners with an older boy whose mom was friends with his mom when he was five or six years old. from what cal remembers of him, the person he’s now sitting across from at sparky’s pub doesn’t seem like an unrealistic progression for the quiet, studious kid who he struggled to hold a conversation with. “...have you been back to boston lately?” something which had not changed, cal supposed. / @ofgoldenboys
