"i'm breaking up with you."
you laughed. not because you found it funny but because it was so out of left field that your brain couldn't process any other way.
"…what?"
your boyfriend finally looked up from his phone.
"i'm serious."
the smile disappeared from your face instantly.
"what the hell?" you asked quietly. "why?"
he avoided your eyes for a second, sighed heavily, then looked towards you. "look, it's…you know i got into law school at NYU a few weeks ago?"
you nodded.
"and it's just…i'm going into big law. the people there are…ambitious. driven. i just don't think we're headed in the same direction anymore."
you stood there in your bedroom, dumbfounded. "you think i'm not good enough, don't you?" you muttered.
"look, i'm sorry, okay?" he said, ignoring the question, as if a sorry could heal the wound or properly end your two-year relationship. he slipped out your bedroom, the dooring clicking shut behind you.
——
your sorority sisters were starting to get a bit worried.
you moped around the sorority house as if you were one of those old animatronics at disney. you cried into your fries at malone's when you though no one was looking. hell, you even started saying no to going to frats and other parties, which was out of character according to the others.
you were in need of an intervention.
"that's it!"
you and your friends sophia and zoe jumped as your little, harper slammed the table at your booth in malone's with both her palms.
"what are you talking about?" you groaned.
"you've been miserable for the past month and a half and it's ending. now."
"harper, when we had said intervent-" zoe started.
"you guys planned this shit?" you exclaimed. a few people around glanced towards your group's booth, then went back to their own conversations. you pulled the strings on your hoodie to hide your face.
sophia and harper stared furtively at zoe for exposing their plan. zoe shifted uncomfortably under their gaze.
"look," sophie said while tearing the paper off her straw. "we're worried about you. honestly."
harper turned towards you. "sig tau's throwing for dean and beau's double birthday bash or bonanza or whatever the fuck this weekend. theme's pairs, and we're going."
you let your head hit the booth's headboard cushion. your ex had already left for new york. logically, you knew that he wouldn't be at the party. unfortunately for you, your anxiety hand never cared much for logic.
but maybe harper was right.
or maybe tequilia was.
——
you and harper went as woody and jessie from toy story.
the house was filled with people you hadn't seen in a while. whether it was because you skipped socials or the occasional 9am, it was oddly nostalgic to get to party with and see some of your sisters again. you weren't keen on drinking tonight, but harper insisted on being tonight's designated driver so you could have fun.
"i'm gonna find beau and hang for a bit, okay?" she whispered into your ear, giving your arm a reassuring squeeze before going towards beau and his friend group in sig tau.
just like that, you were alone.
you adjusted your cowgirl hat and jean mini skirt and made you way to the island where the were handing out solo cups filled with cheap beer ("seriously, beau? couldn't even buy the good shit?" you overheard someone say). you grabbed a fresh one and walked outside towards the balcony overlooking the nantucket sound. you sipped the beer slowly as you listened closely to the white noise of the waves.
as you got less sober, your mind drifted back to thinking about your ex. where was he now? what was he doing? who was he doing? was this all some weird, cruel loyalty test to see if you were good enough to be his wife after graduation?
"hey, you good?" a voice asked hesitantly.
you turned slowly to see a guy in a briar university tank and gold wings on his back.
"yeah, i-uh, i was just looking out," you said. you slid off your red hat and wiped beer from your mouth.
"damn. drinking on the job, huh, jessie? what would woody say?" he joked as he sat down in one of the outdoor chairs.
"well, woody…,"
you looked indoors to see beau and harper dancing together, the bass of on the floor by Jlo vibrating throughout the house.
"…isn't any better."
he laughed as you sat down across from him, the fire pit separating you both. "well, glad to know someone's doing their job, at least."
"yeah, it's been a while."
the guy gave you a quizzical look. "the lookout or…?"
"the partying, i mean," you clarified, suddenly aware of the chill in the air.
"how come?"
were you seriously about to tell a random guy your love life, or the lack thereof?
"wouldn't you like to know, bird brain?" you joked, gesturing towards his wings.
"woah, chill," he fired back, but you could tell he meant nothing of it.
"it's just been a minute, which is stupid because that's what us sorority girls are known for, right? not being the brightest but knowing how to party?" you quipped sarcastically as you drank the rest of you beer.
the guy furrowed his brows. "i'm getting the feeling this is about a guy."
you laughed. "is it that obvious?"
"kinda."
you laughed again, this time a bit shakier than intended.
"it's fine, y'know?"
"doesn't sound like it?"
you caved, tears welling in your eyes. "yeah, sorry. my ex dumped my ass like a month ago to do some big law shit in new york. it's just been hard lately because anything i do just reminds me why he broke up with-"
"woah woah woah," he said as he tried to calm you down from the edge of crying, but the tears came anyway. he moved to the chair besides yours, rubbing your back for what seemed like a few minutes as you cried into his shoulder.
you're sure that when harper, zoe, and sophia meant getting out of your funk, they didn't mean cying into a random guy's shoulder on a saturday night in september.
you pulled away from him and wiped your eyes so you could see him. "thank you…oh my god. i didn't even ask your name. i'm a piece of shit-" you fell back into his shoulder.
he rubbed your back and shushed you. "it's fine, okay," he whispered into you ear. "it's john logan, but you can call me logan."
you both were like that for another minute or so until your hiccups subsided. you pulled away to see logan's face. "seriously, thank you. and sorry for getting sky high on your shoulder."
he chuckled, licking his thumb and clearing the mascara remnants off of himself. "no problem…?"
you told him your name and laughed together. you spent the rest of the night like this, sitting together, sharing stories from bad dates to awkward moments in class.
"worst date?"
"the guy took to buffalo wild wings of all places and made me split the bill after buying 40 dollars worth of wings."
logan blinked.
"…that's diabolical."
the both of you burst out laughing, the waves of the sound carrying your laughter.
harper found you guys outside, brown cowboy hat in one hand and a sprite in the other. "come on girl, time to go. thanks for watching her, dude," thanking logan as she slung your arm over your shoulder.
she looked back one more time to wink at logan, who smirked back at her, thanking her silently

you pulled away from him and wiped your eyes so you could see him.
