I think one of the reasons I feel so passionate about transfem Ralsei is because chapter 5 genuinely captures the closeted trans struggle so well not even as an allegory but as the actual textual arc of the character. The idea that if you don’t follow the rules, if you don’t present how you’re “supposed to,” it could genuinely ruin your entire life
In this case the prophecy is a stand in for family, friends, broader society which have all assigned you a gender that you have to present and perform as even if you don’t want to, and transitioning means you risk losing all that support. That’s why it hurts to see people denying that it could happen or even saying it would be bad writing or ruin their femboy identity, because they’re doing the same thing. They have this role for them as a cute uwu femboy in their head and they get mad at the suggestion that the role could change.
A more serious ask because you are an inspiration and a promise that things can get better. How do i break past the barrier of fear thats stopping me from taking the steps to transitioning? like how did you manage to move past that fear in a way that allowed you to get as far as you did
It wasn't really about conquering fear. It was about seeing no other option. The reality was, I was going to transition, or I was going to die. and I didn't want to die. not when I still had another option left.
i love declining birth rates 🥰 "what a horrible problem! society will collapse!" oopsie it looks like you're gonna have to make having children worth it 😊 teehee you're gonna have to improve society in order to fix this problem, or it will all collapse. oh noooooo. how horrible. :3c
I thought the following quote was a legend, but it actually might be true. King Louis XV (the 15th) of France was a huge horndog. He had a long string of mistresses (I mean, many). He also involved France in several disastrous wars. He also spent a lot on lavish public works and on the court. In other words, he had a pretty extravagant lifestyle all around, personally and policy-wise, and it depleted the national treasury. At some point he or his latest mistress, Madame de Pompadour, was pondering all this, and said, “Après moi, le déluge.” "After me, the flood."
That gets quoted a lot by people who criticize other people who are being selfish in a very short-term way: "Those people are thinking, 'Not my problem. It'll blow up after I'm gone.' In other words, 'Après moi, le déluge,' amirite? Those assholes." Sadly, right now 'Après moi, le déluge' is in fact the attitude of most policymakers. I'm not an anti-natalist, so I do think it's a problem. But after millennia (yes, thousands of years) of high birth rates (to counterbalance the horribly high death rates), with reliable birth control women are saying, "No more." And who can blame them? It's actually a complex problem. - Penicillin, condoms, and hormonal birth control have changed sexual norms a lot in the last few decades. Having been alive and aware in the 1970s, I can tell you that it's very different. - Girls' education is a key driver of economic growth, so many international organizations are pushing it. High fertility also gets in the way of economic growth, so that's gotta go, too. - Feminism as a movement is another contributor, and this has, in different forms, become worldwide. It's part of the sexual revolution, part of a revolution in voting, in education, and in employment. - Industrialization means most jobs are not that physical. Women can and do work at hard physical labor; men just are a little more productive at it - not dramatically, but noticeably. But almost nobody needs to do it anymore in developed countries, and the number of such jobs is shrinking in developing countries. Overall, this means that girls educated this way and encouraged to have small families grow up to be women in good jobs (better than historically) who sex before marriage and say, "Enough of this patriarchal shit," and have no families. Men are not keeping up. They still are the majority of policymakers in the world, and that means they're not really listening to women, who are the people who actually do the hard work of making people. Yes, things are changing among younger men - more are willing to be very involved fathers - but it's slow going, and they are, globally, still the minority. Thus, improve society? Yes. It'd be nice to improve society for half of humanity. It's happening, but not fast enough. And many feminists note the benefits of gender equality to men, who don't have to suppress their emotions, but that's a tough sell. And policymakers are in office only for a few years, so they have no incentive to solve a problem that will take decades to play out. I'm over 60. I'm even a Boomer. I actually can say, "Not my problem." But I don't. I worry about my daughter and her cousins. What sort of world will we leave them? And what about their kids - if any? In the short run, low birth rates lead to the young paying for a numerically larger number of old people (healthcare and retirement). That's a burden. In the long run, it'll be even more unstable. Are policymakers trying to improve society enough so that most couples will end up having two kids? Not so far.
So, two things that irk me about the fuss over dwindling birth rates:
Humanity can thrive just fine with fewer people than we have today. There are genuine issues with a population that's unbalanced age-wise, and they're problems worth addressing, but it's less of a problem to people than to capitalism. No room for growth if the consumer base shrinks. O noes. We might. Need to restructure our economy. For sustainability instead of growth. (I will repeat that there are in fact genuine issues, but I think when the rich whine, they're rarely as concerned with the issues to people, or they might be working to solve them.)
Guess what can help with lower birth rates? Immigration! The rich and powerful countries of the world are the ones most experiencing falling birth rates. Globally, it's not really an issue. Accept more young immigrants from around the world, and you can kickstart your economy and help develop stuff! It's a win/win if you're not desperately trying to create an eternally static ethnostate!
Look, I've seen how hard it is on my family to care for my aging grandparents with their sizable pool of willing and able descendants/cousins to help, and I worry about when it'll be my parents with their fewer descendants, or me with my none. I get it that a population pyramid works best when it's at least vaguely pyramid-shaped and that a lot of countries are getting uncomfortably close to umbrella-shaped. But you can't sit around and whine about people not choosing to breed future carers for you. You need to invest in making this a world where people want children, and have support for raising them, not a world where people are treated like livestock to be optimized and bred for maximum value extraction.
holy shit oh my go what the fuck

ralsei edits that i made for no reason in particular
extra cleanups and original sizes under the cut

it's lowkey crazy to me that tma which is relatively not that old has such a misogynistic fandom; the way people talk about basira, daisy, melanie and like any female character who is around is awful. and it's not because of their character flaws or whatever; i have seen people babygirlyfying the guys for the same reason they wanted the others gone. this is a story where the fan favorite characters are the literal anticrist, his homicidal lover, a distorted not-being who is binary in gender and eats people, and the fucking fear-god onceler??? i don't understand how you can't comprehend the concept of multiple nuanced characters just because they happen to be WOMEN. like yes, basira is a hypocrite AND paranoid AND makes excuses but like. jon was (almost) the same for a very long time??? like yes, they are mean to jon and blame him but he literally STALKED the others in s2? drove tim near insanity with the constant accusations? and also when melanie is angry she is Evil and Mean to jon (which she is, without a valid reason) but when tim is angry and destructive it's fine because he got traumatized by the fucking worms??? pls make it make sense.
y'all really weren't kidding with "the biggest indicator of ralsei being transfem is how hard ppl are angrily trying to disprove it" oh my god the shit i've seen this past week 😭
utdr fans will convince themselves that actual straight-up woody from toy story is gonna have major significance to the plot and is connected to some demonic cat creature whose role/identity is still shrouded in mystery because of an unrelated shitpost toby posted to tumblr like a decade ago that was rediscovered and went viral around ch2, but if you so much as imply that ralsei wants to be a girl they'll act like you shot their dog
im starting to think a lot of ppl might not have realized that the whole mike thing is poking fun at them specifically
told my mom today about how lucky I am to have her. about how many trans girls I know who don't have any parents in their lives anymore. about how unusual she is for loving me as much as she does. she said it was a privilege to get to know the real me. i said it's a privilege to have a mother who'd say something like that.

deltarune chapter 5 spoilers
this is actually so stupid im sorry
I cannot believe Flowery rage baited Ralsei so hard he made him say
“I could burn you alive in an instant”
Ralsei said that, RALSEI.
Little Mr.”Oh yeah King I’ll heal you” really got to a point where he said “You’d be dead where you stand”
And then bro just responds Lamo you won’t, I can spare you, you wish you were me, and you wish you were a girl, anyways imma go fuck Kris’s dad
Truly the most character of all time
if i was in a more critical mood i could do a whole write-up on how tma excels at creating female characters with depth and rich inner worlds but is not very great at using them in the plot, like out of melanie and georgie and basira and daisy not one of them has been really a major driver of the plot the way martin (or even s3 tim) has been
daisy is the one with something closest to a big character arc bc she changed so much since we first saw her, but even her initial leaving of the hunt happened largely off-screen in the coffin while she was trapped inside and after her character underwent that development she just kind of... exited stage left? and if it's never touched again in s5 i am going to remain bitter forever about how basira's role in the plot in s4 was reduced to very little but a wild goose-chase in canon and a red herring for the audience to wonder what the whole "detective" deal was only for it to not mean much of anything (there's still hope for this to be expanded upon in s5 though so im keeping my fingers crossed). and i think melanie is the most underused character in the whole show when you consider how complex and emotional her motivations have been but she was not allowed to play much of an active part in... anything plot-central, like, at all? she... stole the tape from elias' desk? we never even got to hear a recording of her defending the archives during the flesh attack
i may have missed a lot of stuff bc my memories of s2-3 are now spotty and i never had a great memory of these things to begin with, but honestly i think the smaller impact the female characters have had in the fandom compared to the male ones like elias or peter isn't a straightforward fandom misogyny problem so much as the canon material just not letting these characters shine as much as it could have, which is a damn shame considering how much potential these characters have on their own
Stop calling it “Ao3” it’s Aooo and you have to howl like a wolf when you say it
