BIOGRAPHY
While Calla wasn’t born with the Lannister name, she certainly was born to know herself as a part of the lion’s bloodline. Her father, while beloved by her, didn’t play such a key role in her upbringing as much as her mother did. Lanna Lefford raised her daughter to behave and move about the world as if she was as valued as a male, encouraging her to stand her ground, speak her mind and make space for herself, particularly in the company of those who didn’t wish to see a woman know her worth. Just as her mother did that for her, Calla began doing what she could to lift up her dear little sister, Myranda, as well as the circle of women around them. A sharp mind and a sharp tongue would become her weapons of choice, forgoing tears and emotions that she deemed made her seem vulnerable. She buried that part of herself when she was barely a teen and Calla found since then that moments of emotional connection became rarer for her, since her armor stayed firmly put since then.
The Lefford lady wasn’t contained in her youth and eventually it was too late to try to bind her with any form of proper structure and the guidelines a lady of her position ought to follow. Her reputation became but a second thought for her, caring little if others ever learned of her pleasurable vices when it came to drinks and spending nights on the beds of men. Everything was always on her terms, and that was all that mattered to her: to have the power of choice, regardless of the consequences. She was willing to pay the price for the things she wished to experience. The only ways in which she could ever ground herself in any formal structure was when it comes to her family, to her house. But then again, on such occasions Calla wanted to act upon her loyalty to those important to her, and she never felt burdened by it.
An arranged marriage was orchestrated by her mother, Lady Lanna Lefford, for Calla to wed Lord Garland Hightower of Oldtown. The match, though political in nature, blossomed into genuine affection, and during a time when the realms had gathered in the North, Calla and Garland eloped and wed in secret. Their union was later formalized with a public ceremony in the Reach. That day was marred by tragedy, however, as Lady Lanna was murdered in Oldtown by the Reynes and Tarbecks. Lanna’s death would later drive the Lannisters to unleash the infamous Rains of Castamere in retaliation.
Calla was devastated by her mother’s loss, cast into a period of profound grief; one in which her new husband offered her little solace or understanding. In time, the bond between them unraveled, and what had once seemed a love match came to feel like a grievous mistake. Garland ultimately sought an annulment, claiming Calla had not been a virgin at the time of their marriage, an accusation that brought scandal and shame upon Calla and her house. She was not absolved of her foolish actions, but many in the West viewed the Hightowers’ rejection as a grievous insult. In the aftermath, ties between the Reach and the Westerlands frayed. It took a long time for Calla’s reputation to recover to the point where she could rejoin courtly life in the West. She now serves as one of Queen Katherine’s ladies-in-waiting.
