There is no difference between selfshipping and yumeshipping. Any differences that people claim are going to vary based on their personal discretion. The reason we even have two terms for the same thing to begin with is because "yume" to describe selfshipping originated in Japanese communities before being picked up elsewhere.

While yumeshipping comes with specific terms to describe the person themself (yumejoshi for girls, yumedanshi for boys), it fundamentally describes the exact same thing as selfshipping.

That and I've also never agreed with the "yumeship includes OC/Canon" definition because plenty of selfshippers use OCs for their selfship, unless the idea is that the OC/Canon being included in the yumeship definition are OCs that aren't representing you, but what defines an OC, self-insert, or just "you" according to either term is so muddy that it feels pointless to make that distinction specifically in the first place.

I never made this post to discuss this directly but I feel like we needed to have this discussion anyways: Yumeship, as defined by English speakers, is not being used to describe its Japanese context. That is Orientalism. It deserves to be called Orientalism, not "thing, japan" or whatever funny term people wanna use to downplay the fact that Orientialism is a form of racism.

I think the selfship community at large is reluctant to talk about this beyond the occasional reminder post because being confronted with the idea that what they're doing is racist is a very scary thing for them; The main response people will give is that it feels far too bold of a claim to make for something seemingly inconsequential. But it only feels consequential because those who aren't affected by racism can brush it off as such. If you've never been in Japanese yumeship communities, of course you wouldn't know the difference between that and the way it's used interchangably with selfship.
