Disability Imagine

If you have a visible disability...

Imagine your f/o helping you do boring maintenance on your mobility aids. Changing the tips of your canes/crutches. Cleaning the wheels on your wheelchair. Tightening the screws on your walker. All without a sigh or complaint!

Imagine them staring daggers into the rude adult who is staring at your skin disorder like a fool. Eventually spitting out, "Is there a problem?" puffing their chest out until the loser walks away, scared and ashamed.

Imagine them doing the sometimes difficult job of putting a shoe on your prosthetic foot for you, so you don't have to deal with the frustration. Or painting the nails on your arm prosthesis so they match your other hand.

Imagine them sharply correcting someone who starts speaking slowly and loudly at you once they find out you are blind/visually impaired. "Hey, asshole, they're blind, not deaf. They can hear you just fine."

Your f/o is never embarrassed to be seen with you. Never. You are perfect and beautiful to them. All the negative attention you get in public only makes them defensive of you, as you're their precious person who they would do anything to protect. They love you so deeply, every scar and lost screw (seriously, why do screws for mobility aids always get lost?!?) and wouldn't change a thing about you. They are proud of you and proud to be with you. Always.

Imagine your f/o seeing you in pain, you feel regret because of how you hurted someone and now you can't take it back. Even if f/o tried to tell you that it will be fine, you feel that it isn't. Your f/o realized that even if you feel regret and acted foolish to lose trust among others, your f/o still loves you and knows that you will do what is right and fix your mistakes.

Imagine riding a train with your f/o. Just spending all the time with pleasant conversations and pleasant silence between you two.

♡ the two of you spread a picnic blanket beneath the shade of a big tree while a soft summer breeze rustles the leaves overhead. lunch is simple: your favorite snacks, cold drinks, and a few sweet treats! somehow though, it feels like the nicest meal you've ever had ... your f/o can't help smiling every time you laugh, and they swear the birds are singing louder just because you're there. before you head home, they carefully tuck a tiny wildflower behind your ear and quietly think they've never seen anyone more beautiful. ♡

If your disability was "self-caused", your f/o doesn't care. While people may blame you for acquiring your disability, like smoking causing your asthma or substance use causing your memory issues, your f/o isn't one of those people.

Life is so fucking hard. Nobody is perfect. Not every story of disability acquisition is a noble and valor filled one. We are just humans trying to survive and your f/o knows that. They know what struggles you've went through and they're so proud of you for still trying every day.

They love you so much and would do anything to help you with your disability, without guilt tripping or shaming you. Whatever you need, whatever accomodation, whatever help, they will be there, ready and willing. Because you are so so worth it.

♡ the afternoon sun is warm against your skin as the two of you wander through a little farmers market together. every few steps they stop to point out something they think you'd like: a bouquet of your favorite flowers, homemade jam in a flavor you mentioned wanting to try, little trinkets that remind them of you. they end up carrying most of the bags, insisting they're "not heavy at all," even though you can tell they're just looking for an excuse to take care of you... by the time you leave, one of your hands is full of fresh fruit, and the other is comfortably tucked into theirs. ♡
