Here's a small MDF (feeding 5x small offices in Bexley NSW) that we tidied up and upgraded for around $400.This was inside a small closet, so the customer did not want any ducting or conduit covering the exposed cabling, and did not want new waterproof/dustproof housing, saving a few hundred dollars on labour and materials.

Occasionally we come across disgruntled ADSL customers who wildly blame their ISP (internet service provider) for slow internet speeds… but then, once on site, we find it’s just a Wireless Network (Wi-Fi, or WLAN) issue.

Want to move this phone over to that room? No worries, unplug it from this data socket and plug it in over there at that data socket - works the same, without needing a phone technician to rewire anything.

Want to work from home? No worries, just unplug the IP Phone from work and plug it into your home LAN. As long as your network setup (firewall and other security) doesn’t block any required ports, you should be using your phone the same way you do at work, for no extra charge.

Going overseas? You may find this really surprising: you can either take your IP Phone overseas with you and use a data port at your accommodation (where internet is available), or you could hire a mobile/cell phone (or use your own phone and buy a SIM card) in the country you're in, download a VoIP app, and connect to your Hosted PBX with SIP credentials (simply a username, password, and SIP address - which can be supplied by your Hosted PBX provider).

The local supermarket has everything; meat, bread and cheese. It may be convenient to shop at one place, but we all know that for quality products, it's best to go to a Butcher, Bakery and a Delicatessen separately for these things.

The same goes for quality in any trade. Even though many electricians cover a broad spectrum of power, lighting, and communications cabling, their forte is in Electrical Systems. They deliver and manage power systems, repair and install lighting and power points. This area of cabling has a different set of rules... communications cabling however is a lot more precise… intricate… delicate… so easily affected by things like sharp kinks in the cable, and magnetic fields (EMF) from adjacent cabling.

Sometimes your ISP just can't do anything more to get your new ADSL or phone line installed... as far as they're concerned, they've done all they can and now its up to the customer to fix any problems.

Most of the time it's a simple MDF Jumper that needs to be installed or modified; a 20 minute job performed by a licenced technician, to connect the new service your ISP has provided to your townhouse, unit or apartment's phone cabling.

As much as we would love to upsell Central Filters, we're an honest bunch... if you don't need something, then we're not going to try and sell it to you.

This is true for ADSL2+ Central Filters/Splitters. They can cost upwards of $300-$400 to install (depending on who you get to install them), and in our experience plenty of ISP's like to tell customers to get one if they have a Back to Base Alarm System and are experiencing slow ADSL and/or drop outs.

If your ADSL internet is slow or dropping out, and/or if your phone line is crackling (and perhaps you lose dial tone when it rains?) then you could have corrosion in your phone sockets like in this photo (see the green/blue coating on the screws and the crusty bits on the contacts? It is copper "rust", not orange/red like rusty iron, but its the same oxidation chemical reaction (between copper & oxygen) in the presence of water).

This is a old Australian 610 type phone socket in a bottom-floor apartment, in a suburb not too far from the coast. This is common in units/flats/apartments as the ventilation (in older buildings) is usually not too good. How your line is affected depends on how bad the corrosion is and even the humidity in the room.

Corrosion between metallic contacts, terminations and wires causes a change in impedance which affects both Voice signals (by inducing crackling noises on the line, sometimes it can even short circuit the phone line which drops your call and drops dial tone so you can't make calls) and ADSL data signals (by causing the same noise on a specific "channel" or range of frequencies that causes dropped packets / error packets, or causes the modem to mark those channels/frequencies as "too noisy" reducing your overall bandwidth - reducing your sync speed, and ultimately, your data throughput).

If you’re experiencing a ‘hum’ or crackling noises on your phone line, chances are the fault is inside your premises. Most people blame their service provider, who then pass the blame back onto the customer after their servicemen check the network.

Unfortunately not all landline phone and/or ADSL (including “naked DSL”) installations are completed successfully by the carrier or ISP. But you've paid for installation, right? So what is the problem, and what can be done?
