Six years ago we started Byeink with the aim to build a tool for authors and publishers. In 2011 Byeink released its first beta, and began to invite users to participate in a new way of create, share and sell theirs ebooks. We’re proud to have been able to provide a bit of help to people who love books.

After these intense years of building Byeink, we have to announce that we will close down in a few days. Every new venture requires a leap of faith, and we thank you for taking that leap with us. Your enthusiasm, passion, and contribution have been lovely, and for that we will be forever grateful.

Hace seis años comenzamos Byeink con el objetivo de construir una herramienta para autores y editores. En 2011 Byeink lanzó su primera beta, y comenzó a invitar a los usuarios a participar en una nueva forma de crear, compartir y vender sus libros electrónicos. Estamos orgullosos de haber sido capaces de proporcionar un poco de ayuda a las personas que adoran los libros.

Apple recomienda a los desarrolladores de libros electrónicos añadir los eventos del mouse, para dar el salto al escritorio con iBooks para OS X Mavericks.

Este otoño, el nuevo sistema operativo de Mac (OS X Mavericks) llegará incluyendo iBooks para escritorio. Los libros ya adquiridos en iBooks aparecerán automáticamente en Mac. La tienda iBooks también estará implementada, por lo que más de 1,8 millones de libros en todo el mundo estarán disponibles para su descarga con sólo unos clics.

Con OS X Mavericks comienza un nuevo capítulo en la historia de iBooks. La lectura de libros será muy similar a la de un dispositivo iOS, con la ventaja de que a través de iCloud se pueden sincronizar las notas, marcadores y posiciones en todos los dispositivos de Apple.

We always thought that Byeink would be a great tool for authors and digital publishers. It makes the creation, management and direct sales easier to readers through its own channel. Moreover, generating eBooks in most common formats lets you use an agregador to place digital publications in all stores that exist today with guarantees that the final product achieves the needs of the reader.

It has not been a surprise for us to see that our users have understood and welcomed these possibilities. But bloggers have also been our goal from the beginning. We have always confirmed that Byeink could be a perfect tool for content creators to be able to  explore new ways to monetize their work,which is exceptional in some cases. We know several cases of bloggers that have reached the sign of a publisher to take what they were doing in their blog to the book format.

  Buscando Historias can be another example of how digital publishing lets all kind of artists to get their stories in a fast, effective and direct way. They write in their blogs:  "We like eBooks because you can read our stories without having to use the internet and we also like them because  you can collect the stories and have them all saved. If ever internet fails or Buscando historias disappears, eBooks keeps alive the stories on your computer or in your eBook reader."

  Recetas de rechupete. They launched into publish some of the main contents of their blog in eBook just over a year by updating and filtering many of their posts that had been published for a long time. They put their book on sale in Amazon and iBookstore.

Siempre hemos pensado que byeink sería una gran herramienta para autores y editores digitales, les facilita la creación, la gestión y la venta directa a los lectores a través de su propio canal. Además, al poder generar los eBooks en los formatos más comunes, permite utilizar un agregador para colocar las publicaciones digitales en la totalidad de tiendas que existen hoy en día con garantías de que el producto final cumpla con las exigencias del lector.

No ha sido una sorpresa comprobar que nuestros usuarios han entendido y acogido con satisfacción estas posibilidades, pero también han estado en nuestro objetivo desde el principio los creadores de blogs, siempre hemos sostenido que byeink podría ser una herramienta perfecta para que los creadores de contenido pudieran explorar nuevas formas de monetizar su trabajo, en algunos casos excepcional. Conocemos varios casos de bloggers que han llegado a fichar por alguna editorial para llevar al formato libro lo que ya venían haciendo en su blog.

Hace algún tiempo Yael, que publica el blog Acapulco70, escribía este post en el que desgranaba como la Editorial Planeta había intentado cerrar un acuerdo para publicar uno de sus libros. Yael ha publicado varios libros y ha vendido desde su blog más de 30.000 copias de uno de ellos, un ejemplo de cómo el libro digital está cambiando las reglas del juego y abriendo oportunidades que antes no existían.

Buscando Historias puede ser un ejemplo más de como la edición digital permite a creadores de todo tipo hacer llegar sus historias de una forma rápida, efectiva y directa. En su blog escriben “Nos gustan los eBooks porque puedes leer nuestras historias sin tener que usar Internet y nos gustan porque puedes coleccionar las historias y tenerlas guardadas, si algún día Internet falla o Buscando Historias desaparece, los eBooks mantendrán vivas las historias en tu ordenador o en tu lector de eBooks.”

En Recetas de rechupete se lanzaron hace poco más de un año a publicar en eBook algunos de los principales contenidos de su blog, actualizando y filtrando muchos de sus post publicados durante mucho tiempo, pusieron a la venta su libro en Amazon y iBookstore.

Más que una muestra de amor

Regalar un libro es algo más que un detalle, podría decirse que es una auténtica demostración de amistad. Autores, editores y lectores lo confirman: obsequiar literatura y más si es digital, es un acierto seguro. Cuando además sabes que tu pareja, familiar o amigo/a lee habitualmente en un lector de tinta electrónica o en una tableta digital, sé original y sorpréndeles con un ebook de regalo.

Algunas cosas están cambiando

Si regalar un libro en papel es tan sencillo como ir a la librería, que te recomienden, seleccionar el elegido y que te lo envuelvan, hacer lo mismo con un ebook debería resultar hasta más fácil y cómodo. Navidad, Reyes, el día del Padre, de la Madre, San Valentín, el día del Libro, un cumpleaños o un aniversario, hoy mismo porque sí, cualquier momento es bueno. Ten en cuenta que el libro electrónico es notablemente más barato y el que lo lee disfruta de la misma manera. Cuando el destinatario recibe el ebook de regalo, la emoción es igualmente comparable. ¿Qué más da cual sea el motivo que nos lleva a regalar cultura?

Debería ser algo habitual

No es común entre las distribuidoras dar como servicio la opción de regalar libros electrónicos, cuando en realidad esta opción debería estar disponible en las plataformas de venta de ebooks por internet. Apple has added a new tool to help readers discover self-published books called Breakout Books.

The titles on the Breakout Books lists are hand-picked books from emerging authors who have earned high ratings from customers. Apple explains Breakout Books in the iBookstore, as a place to “find the next reading sensation.”

Breakout Books includes lists of works in genres such as romance, sci-fi & fantasy, and mysteries & thrillers. Books on the list include: One More Day by M. Malone, Ember by Jessica Sorensen, and The Witch’s Ladder by Dana Donovan. The list includes a number of titles from self-publishing plaform Smashwords.

Mark Coker says the relationship has been mutually beneficial, with many titles hitting Apple's best seller lists in a short period of time.

"Although the iBookstore has always carried and supported self-published ebooks, today's launch signifies an escalated commitment on the part of Apple, whose iBookstore currently sells books in 50 countries. The iBookstore first piloted the Breakout Books feature in their Australian store and has since implemented similar features in Canada and the U.K.  In the process, Apple is helping to shape a brighter, more democratized future for book publishing. More writers will have the freedom to publish and more readers will have the freedom to discover and enjoy a greater diversity of high-quality books than ever before."
