want to share some of your pride headcanons? i’ll put some questions in more!

1) hc sexuality for each of the main characters?

lister - bisexual

rimmer - gay but thinks he’s straight because he has gender envy for the women he “fancies”

cat - pan and says ‘woman’ thinking that’s a synonym for ‘person’ because cat language doesn’t have genders

kryten - attracted to electrical appliances ofc

2) when do you think the characters worked it out (if they do)?

i think lister has always experimented with men and loosely known but hasn’t quite clocked that bi = gay too. he’s all like “i can’t be gay can i?” to kochanski in series 7, but it’s because he’s thinking that would be insinuating he doesn’t like girls as well.

i think rimmer has always known because of how he insults the concept of being queer it is soooo… directed at himself. he does not admit until he returns from being ace though. i think he and lister are a thing in my head by m-corp because i love the angst of lister not remembering they’re together.

cat’s always known and cool about it

3) do you headcanon any characters as trans?

i don’t think lister counts as a headcanon tbh XD

transfemme rimmer <3 trixie labouche <3 alas it will never be admitted. still goes by he/him pronouns because the internalised transphobia and fear of parents is so bad that she/her causes anxiety rather than feeling affirming.

4) what would the red dwarf crew wear to a pride parade?

lister’s normal clothes and leathers but with some snazzy head accessory, like rainbow sunglasses or a massive pride hat.

i feel like rimmee is absolutely nothing UNLESS he got SO drunk before, in which case he would go in “drag” (and feel secretly affirmed). it’ll be like… frank ‘n furter drag.

i feel like cat picks everything rainbows out of his wardrobe but refuses any like “official” merch because he doesn’t want to wear anything he might see someone else wearing.

5) do they own any pride merch? (like pins etc)

lister does….

lister’s giving something david bowie like boys keep swinging or 70s rock queer in general

very drunk rimmer is giving kylie minogue’s can’t get you outta my head

7) if you said yes to trans headcanons, what's the backstory behind their trans names?

i feel like rimmer would be so impacted by the shit that happened in better than life trixie labouche has to be chosen out of respect for what that poor woman was going through.

i have no idea for lister. maybe it was david as in david bowie. or some footballer called david. it definitely comes from a celebrity.

8) who did they come out to first?

lister never officially came out to anyone he just… was and everyone went with it.

rimmer came out to lister first when he came back from being ace.

9) what's a popular LGBT+Q headcanon in the fandom you personally disagree with?

no not really. sometimes i think lister’s trans and other times i’m unsure just because sometimes he says very cis man things. but the evidence is also undeniable for lister being trans, to the point the guy who picks up his cardboard box called the baby him “her,” so…

10) any queer rairpairs you like?

i explore mellie and ace a bit too much in my fics XD (a queer pairing because i hc ace as bi and mellie as trans)

Rimmer - (closeted) (very) gay

Kryten - I'm not really a massive fan of the 'robot = asexual' trope but I hc Kryten as aro/ace-spec

Cat - pan

2) when do you think the characters worked it out (if they do)?

Lister - In his late teens, meaning his reaction to kissing Rimmer in the Blue ep. to be more a shock reaction to being attracted to Rimmer, rather than men in general

Rimmer - Early 50s. Though in the back of his mind he's always known

Kryten - idk but I don't reckon he thought about sexuality at all, until being on the Dwarf

Cat - Never questioned it, and tbh I hc all the felis sapiens as pan

3) do you headcanon any characters as trans?

Lister is 100% a trans guy to me

4) what would the red dwarf crew wear to a pride parade?

Rimmer would be wearing his standard uniform with a tiny pride pin, gifted to him from Lister

Meanwhile Lister is wearing a rainbow striped button up shirt, with or without the leather jacket. Pins on his hat, and carrying a flag, obviously

Kryten has all the pride accessories imaginable

Cat is wearing some rainbow-sequined ensemble, expertly made. With some kind of complimentary earrings

5) do they own any pride merch? (like pins etc)

Lister definitely owns a flag or two, plus pins

As mentioned above, Rimmer has his one and only pride pin, gifted to him from Lister. And it's very treasured

Kryten decorates the ship (main quarters really) in as many pride decorations possible

Idk about Cat

6) what’s the characters’ queer anthems that they just scream the lyrics to?

I can see Lister playing Born this Way at full blast

7) if you said yes to trans headcanons, what’s the backstory behind their trans names?

Tbh I feel like Lister didn't give it that much thought and chose Dave bc it's pretty standard. Either that or it was the name of his (adopted) grandad or something. Idk, it still annoys me that we don't know tons about his background before red dwarf, and family members

8) who did they come out to first?

There's some great fics on ao3 about Lister coming out, super casually, to Rimmer as trans. So like that for sure.

For Rimmer I can see it taking a long time, and he either tells Lister when he's very drunk on one of his death-day anniversary parties, or one night during a chat in the observation dome. Cliche, yes, but that seems realistic to me.

9) what’s a popular LGBT+Q headcanon in the fandom you personally disagree with?

Can't really think of any tbh.
