i think canonically, with cupid making john and mary fall in love, them being soulmates, and having grown up entwined with one another, they have an undeniable natural compatibility.

but what's so interesting to me about their relationship is the discomfort each of them feel when they can't understand each other. they're so enmeshed that they can't understand why the other wants/needs something different. the moments that they forget that they aren't actually one person and the embarrassed betrayal when either shows any kind of individuality (dean is the most famous for this, but sam has his moments)

so when they take the time and effort to understand one another as individuals--those are some of my favorite moments. relying on their childhood and soulmateism doesn't always work. they make the effort to be in a relationship with the other <3

No but I think if they had a normal house (they haven't been in the bunker that long where I'm up to and it's not a house) it would be the kitchen, but one that's also where their dining table is. Dean cooking, practicing recipes, making Sam test them, wearing an array of dumb aprons with jokes and graphics on them (and sometimes this one short frilly one that Sam likes to fuck him in). Eating together at the table, Dean wanting the classic family dining together experience, eating on the couch is only allowed occasionally, and he gets a thrill from the domesticity of it. They use the table to do the household paperwork and pay bills and plan hunts and research. Sam likes to sit there and watch Dean cook and Dean will gripe about him being lazy but they both know it's hot air because he'll slap Sam with a kitchen towel if he tries to help. Sam does the dishes - every time Dean experiments with a recipe there are always so many more but he doesn't mind. Dean is weird about organising the cupboards and fridge. Sometimes he likes to just look inside them because he remembers when they were kids and didn't have enough to eat and seeing them full gives him a sense of peace and fulfilment and happiness. Sam does the same thing. Sam often wakes up first and makes coffee, enjoying the quiet moment, then takes it up to Dean in bed. He's got a proper coffee machine that Dean gave him shit about but it makes damn good coffee so he shut up pretty quickly about it. The fridge has loads of magnets on that they buy from random gas stations and stores on their travels. They like to find the ugliest or stupidest ones and compare and they have to choose a winner, but both go on the fridge. They had a small table at first with two chairs but when people started visiting realised they needed a bigger one and Sam bought one, and Dean got privately emotional about it (but Sam saw straight through him). Their guests gravitate towards the kitchen - it's the heart of their home. They sit at the table with coffee made by Sam or a beer, they eat together, they get told to sit down by both Sam and Dean when they try to help with dishes.

Not a room, but I also think they'd love a porch. Quiet morning coffee, reading the paper, holding hands, watching the sun rise or set. Dean takes up whittling just because it seems right and he always made the best vampire stakes anyway.

Their relationship is a red string of fate too tightly wound around each of them, cutting into them and making them bleed when one or both pull away, but comforting and as necessary to life as a shared umbilical cord when they're close together, accepting who they are to each other, together.
