that’s partly why i’ve always been so touched by anthy’s line “you remind me so much of dios, when i loved him” because there’s such great uncertainty and unreliability, anyway, in whatever future she could have with utena if she broke out of this cycle that to her maybe it’s safer to stay. and if dios could go on to become someone as cruel as akio, couldn’t utena? - wouldn’t there be risk of leaving it all with such monumental effort just to enter another repetition of this? but where dios left anthy to take the swords and eventually turned against her too as the scapegoat, utena put herself through that danger to reach anthy. anthy projects a little bit of an image of her own onto utena, but when utena pries open the coffin with hands bloodied with the effort, anthy realizes, i think, maybe she isn’t like dios after all

If things are going bad in your life the most important thing you can do is fixate on a era of your life you can never return to. It is really important to romanticize it and remember it so incorrectly that it’s more of a false idol for worship than a memory.
