this website is a lot more bluesky than I think 95% of the userbase is prepared to admit

When I'm reading theories and discourse about Madoka Magica it seems like the same wire is crossed in people's interpretation of the text. I think people fundamentally disagree, and passionately disagree, because of the contradictory nature of Madoka's sacrifice.
For example, in becoming a magical girl Madoka finally becomes her own decisionmaking agent... but she also functionally kills herself, erasing herself from reality. So there's the contradictory attainment of agency and suicide.
Because Madoka becomes "hope for magical girls," a part of her is always "together" with other magical girls... but she is a symbol, no longer a person who is able to socialize or relate to others in a linear manner. So there's the contradictory attainment of eternal connection and eternal isolation.
Madoka frees all magical girls from suffering including herself by ensuring they "never become witches" (stay pure), but she's bound herself in the chains of the magical girl system in the first place (and I would say the magical girl system and Kyuubey broadly represent gender oppression in its tendency to impose material consequences for the inability to maintain ideal femininity, purity, etc). So there's the conflation of empowerment and enslavement.
Finally, Madoka is helping all these magical girls maintain their purity, never escape innocence, and metaphorically never grow up... but also she metaphorically "grows up" by choosing an eternal role as a magical girl, which has often represented "growing up" in the genre. So there's the conflation of eternal youth and coming of age.
So you can see why some people love Homura's embrace of impurity and subsequent decision to "tear Madoka away from heaven" and why others are blindsided and creeped out and swearing up and down that it's a metaphor about coercion, abuse, or projection. It's a good conflict because it's not obvious which of the contradictory narratives should Win (I mean, in my opinion Homura is obviously right but. You know).

Death Note was thoroughly fine. It kept a good pace and moved along smoothly; each episode was decently entertaining and I was pleased that the narrative always pushed into new places. There is a particular kind of shonen anime that primarily constructs its plot through establishing a set of rules that characters use, bend, and break. These kinds of bits risk creating hollow characters whose inner lives get swallowed by a deluge of if-then statements. Sometimes Death Note characters suffer from this, and other times the script delves into the psychological or thematically relevant (hubris is a big theme, for example). Light Yagami is sufficiently shitty and it's fun to watch him be a little bitch. L is a likable and mysterious, if a bit hollow, character. The narrative isn't afraid to get homoerotic with it... just a little. It's unfortunate that the author hates women, but he has managed to convince much of the audience that it is Light Yagami who hates women, which is also true. I felt that Death Note is at its most compelling and psychological in the first ten to fifteen episodes; later on it becomes a game of scattered strategic politics and throws in a few goofy characters to spice things up. At this stage of the narrative it does feel like Death Note is on life support, but the climax is sufficiently satisfying. It's a decent classic. I had fun, and I enjoyed that the dub was good enough for me to knit while I watched, but I doubt it'll stick with me for too long.

Welp I ran out of statements to caption my Homucifer art with...
Uhhhh why do people interpret her as someone who would force herself onto Madoka? Like all she did was give her a lil hug
'whatever' is a pretty cool word. but if only there were a version with more swag....
