i really want to emphasize that if anything, this is the beginning of a fascist movement in the united states and not the end of one. people often look at what fascists did once in state power in order to define what fascism is. this a flawed approach and ignores the characteristics of the fascist movements in their infancy, which is far more analogous to our current situation. both the italian fascist party and nazi party were formed in opposition to liberal democracy and parliamentarian politics. they were necessarily against the existing state and drew a great deal of support from this, because people were frustrated with capitalist liberal democracy and felt that it was inert, corrupt, and ineffective. once in power both italian fascists and nazis never actually destroyed the capitalist state and instead molded it to their own interests while working with capitalists, but the opposition to traditional politics and establishment politicians is a key aspect of the early ideology of fascist movements.

Both parties were initially formed to participate in - and really gained power, recruits, and respect from - the ongoing brutal repression of European leftist movements who grew in size and boldness extremely rapidly in the wake of WWI, the Russian Revolution, and the post-war economic recessions. Mussolini was essentially invited into power because the elites of Italy were terrified of an impending communist revolution. Similarly, the Freikorps, who directly preceeded the Nazis in both ideology and membership (several became prominent nazis) came to prominence due to their role in supressing the Spartacist Revolution in 1919. And the perfunctory excuse given for Hitler’s ascension to Chancellor was the Reichstag being burned down by a supposed communist. Essentially, what I’m saying here is that liberal democracy actively cultivates fascism as a bulwark against leftist revolution. It’s true that fascists recruit using the failures of neoliberalism as propaganda material, but it’s even more true that at the end of the day, the main purpose fascists served was to be a bulwark against the feared hypothetical communist revolution

nah youre totally right about that. i do think that the anti-parliamentarian politics of the early fascist movement are significant though because it shows a specific early point in fascism, even though they changed their shit soon after. idk as much about the german side of it but i know in italy being opposed to liberal democracy was a big part of their ideology, and it was strategically effective because everyone hated the italian parliament and the economic crisis. but i 100% agree with you about liberal democracy and fascism. i feel like we’re going to see that part soon after 4 years of a shitty neoliberal biden presidency and increasing anticommunism

no one wants to hear it but love is earned after the initial infatuation. commitment is something u both mutually agree to and then from there it’s work. it’s not work like it’s a chore it’s jus work like it takes effort. to get good at these things takes practice. it takes practice to learn to communicate better and it takes practice to learn to love each other in the ways u need to be loved.
