Tell me a story, I’ve heard it before
But the night’s a fine time for familiar forms:
The man with the axe and the clock that won’t crack
And the terrible calls of the crow dressed in black,
Old women all hidden away in their woods
With their golden-spun secrets they tell to the good,
The wolf and the cloak and the shoe and the eye,
The snow and the girl who forever asks why,
The mirror all shattered, the dragon all slain,
The feathers of swans and the nightingales’ pain.
Desperation and devilry washed in our hearts,
the child whose growing brings day to the dark,
The woman, the weft, the wife and the maid,
Surrounded by flowers the sleeper is laid,
The carpet, the crumbs, the forest, the trees,
Oh wander through shadows, love, take the road east
Far past the sun, dear, and west of the moon,
Remember your fortune and travel home soon,
(the spindle, the wheel, the carpet, the loom).
The gold and the green and the red and the white
hope comes, hope will come with the dawning of light,
the castle, the apple, the prince and the sword,
the tower, the terror, the monstrous lord,
the horse and the knight and the stone and the throne,
wherever you wander, you won’t be alone.
The night’s drawing closer, it has since the start
So tell me a tale and beat back the dark.
