Pecan Lodge - Dallas, TX
I lived in Dallas about 3 years before moving to Austin and back then I wasn’t versed in barbecue, in fact, I wasn’t even a fan of it at the time. This was mostly because I had never really had good barbecue and just associated it with rubbery bland beef slices. You know the ones from your church’s pot luck, the brisket your uncle made in the oven for Cinco de Mayo, or the barbecue at a large chain. So, when living in Dallas I didn’t know the barbecue hot spots and frankly I wouldn’t have tried them anyways because of the association I had towards Barbecue.
It wasn’t until I moved to Austin and banded together with these two jagaloons who taught me the ways of barbecue and introduced me to taste heaven. So, heading back to Dallas for a basketball game, I knew I had to try out the Dallas Barbecue scene. I quickly messaged Jayce (@jaycebeasley) and Carlos to get the 411 on the “go to” places. Right away, I was given a list of places such as Meshacks’, Bartley’s, Lockhart Smokehouse and finally Pecan Lodge. Not only was Pecan Lodge mentioned but was tagged with “The Franklin of Dallas.” Of course I had to go to that one, right? So without further ado, and all this bullshit aside, here’s my review of Pecan Lodge.
Hours are from 11am until sold out, we arrived around noon on a Sunday, so they had been open an hour, and with it being lunch time there was a line; understandably. Not a big deal, I've dealt with longer lines. In fact, I've become accustomed to lines and even welcome them because, in my experience, long lines tend to be worth the wait.
Some light reading while in line. Anticipation intensifies.
My go to order at a new place, at the time, was brisket (moist) and a link of sausage, as seen here.
Sausage: 3
I cut the link in half myself so I could get a look at the inside for color, texture, moistness, all that good stuff. I have to say it was decent tasting but nowhere near the best. The sausage had no snap from the casing, which I know to some isn't a big deal but, I love a good snap so this was a bit disappointing. As for the flavor, it was bland with a hint for flavor. Probably just enough flavor to keep me from officially saying it was bland. This is the best explanation i can give for the taste.
Brisket: 3.2
I can officially say it too was almost bland. To me it had no personality. The pull test didn't yield the slight give that a properly cooked brisket would have. So, because of this the texture was a bit off. However, this means it had a real fatty texture and in my book, not a bad thing.
So, a bit bland on the flavor, decent texture, and overall Okay brisket. I know this came off as negative but, really it wasn't that bad. The sauce was a bit sweet for my liking and I feel it can sometimes be a crutch for bland meet. I fear this might the situation in the case. If, my Dallas buddy wanted to go again, i wouldn't complain.
Drinks: 2.5
The selection was pretty basic. Fountain drinks and bottled water.
Location: 4
This is one thing I found charming and quiet enjoyed. The Pecan Lodge is located inside a farmers market and again was very charming. It's definitely a change from sitting out in a dusty lot like so many locations in Austin. Not that I'm knocking the dusty lots, but it's nice to sit inside out of the elements and enjoy your food.
Overall Numbers:
1. Location & Facility 4 2. Service & Staff 3.5 3. Food 3,2 4. Drink 2.5 (non-alcoholic, because we’re all straight edge)
