anyway unrelatedly, last night i was at a sci-fi/fantasy/horror books pub quiz and i have some. complaints.
ok so this was the opening round which we were given on arrival. i was staring at this like you know i feel like when doing a quiz of this nature it would be usual to put in a couple of softball answers? like idk if i was designing a round like this i might include a few options more along these lines:
i was like am i missing something here?? am i perhaps simply illiterate? but last night for i showed it to a discord im in that's almost entirely comprised of published SFF authors and industry professionals and i think they collectively also scored about 2.
we would have done slightly better but puzzlingly someone just came by our table and took our answer sheet away without warning. we were like aw if you'd given us a couple of minutes warning we'd have thrown in some best guesses. and it turns out 2 of our best guesses would have been correct! lol. lmao, even.
here is the second visual round:
so here we have a round of 'say what you see' puzzles. we once again i think scored 2. and i'm gonna be honest: i think some of them are. genuinely bad? the first one we got was number 4 and i'm like ok on the one hand i'm glad we have at least one correct answer but on the other hand the nature of said correct answer does NOT bode well for the rest of the round bcos that is uh. well it's not a 'say what you see'.
the other one we got correct was 9 and while i am pleased that we cracked it (team effort) i cannot stop thinking about how, best as i can tell, the books are simply. irrelevant? the actual puzzle is just the list of names. i have no idea why it's on books.
ok. i am going to complain about more of the questions but will cut here!!
the opening question of the general knowledge round was the winner of the 2025 Arthur C Clarke award. at this point i'm at the bar getting a drink and i'm like ah, ok. i don't know that but i suppose it's a normal thing for SFF book fans to be following.
but then the second question is 'which author has been nominated for the Arthur C Clarke award the most times without winning?' and i'm like ok. who the FUCK just knows that. what? what kind of question is that? huh??
the other highlight of the opening round was the final question, in which we had to name all 9 houses from game of thrones, for a point each. which i have to say i think is a lot of points to put on a question where you are simply completely scuppered if no-one on your team is a ASOIAF fan?
i more or less soloed this one bcos i was the only person who knew any other than like. Stark and Lannister and i am actually very pleased with my 6/9. at the end i was scrambling for more like 'what is that guy's name. you know. Pedro Pascal. he gets his eyes gouged out??'
this was followed by a round themed around the book festival organising the event. the more i think about this one the more annoyed i get. i don't know what their intention was but essentially it was just them telling us about paid events they had on over the weekend. we actually did score a respectably 3 tho.
the best designed round was a 'name that year' round where they would list of 3 SFF events (book publication or movie releases or whatever) and ask us to guess what year they all happened. this was i think the only round that was well-designed and fun to do. i suspect there may have been multiple people designing rounds independentl.
ok that brings me to the last actual round. we were given a set of answer sheets at the beginning that had the names of the rounds printed on them and this one was called 'Westeros or Wester Ross'. early on i expressed a concern that this might be an entirely Game of Thrones themed round but the group felt that this would be a bit silly. it was proposed that it might perhaps be guessing if place names were from fantasy books or real places in Scotland?
as it turned out: yes, it was an entirely Game of Thrones themed round. the idea was you had a guess if a place name was in Westeros or in real-life Wester Ross which for those unfamiliar is uhh. here:
and ok. if you know much about Scotland it might not surprise you to hear that this is not a region of the country that has a lot of well-known place names. absolutely baffling.
there was 1 finale round after that but we all kind of checked out during Westeros or Wester Ross and were aware we were in like 20th place out of 22 teams at this point so like. fuck that.

I'm just going to say it - body hair (and beauty standards in general) is truly one of the final frontiers of women's issues in the West. Too many women just love their gilded cage too much. It shocks me how virulently women will defend it. I barely open my mouth and the "well I like how it feels. it just makes me feel cleaner. sensory issues. I do it for me. feminism is about choosing (to conform)." brigade come rushing in by the dozens.
Well I don't like how it feels. I don't feel cleaner without body hair. I don't prefer not having body hair. But who will advocate for women like me, but me? For women who do like hair removal, they are advocated for every time they step out of the house and see 99% of the female population also conforming to that standard, or when they watch a movie and see all the shaved actresses, or view an advertisment, or open a magazine, or watch a music video, or scroll through social media, or walk down the streets without receiving insults and glares for having a completely normal bodily feature.
You genuinely can't even point out that hairlessness is a man-made standard without women losing their shit and acting like they are totally immune to propaganda they've been exposed to from birth. I'm so tired.

being a kid and hearing adults say stuff like "woah 2011 was 4 years ago haha" didn't really convey the fucking horror of a youtube video crossing my recommended labelled "9 years ago" and it's from 2017. that's not true. 9 years ago is 2010 or something. don't lie.

more people could identify as asexual/aromantic if they not only knew what that label is but also knew about how wide the spectrum could be. because not every ace/aro person feels the same way and even people who DO have a general idea on what it means, could still be like "yeah no i cant be possibly ace/aro because i feel/do this and that"
