Official WIP introduction
You canāt change the pastā¦or can you?
Down Will Come Baby is (or, will be) a contemporary realism play about the fictional Banning family, the matriarch of which is a famous memoirist. When her three grown children visit to give their approval on her latest book before its publishing, itās revealed that for decades Rose has used her books to rewrite history. From childhoodĀ āmemoriesā of their father, who died when the younger two children were toddlers, to details of the youngest sonās drug addiction, Rose has been imbuing her real stories with fabricated ones. As more nasty truths are let loose, the family must reconcile with who they thought they were, and who they will be now, both in their private and public lives.
Themes: lies, addiction, performitivity, denial, guilt, wishful thinking, fame, dark humor, secrets, death, coping mechanisms, family
Rose BanningĀ The matriarch herself. Mid-late fifties. Famous for her brutally candid memoirs such as Single Motherfucker, Mumās the Word, and Henhouse Seeking Fox, which are in turns hilarious and heartbreaking, but always tenderly told.Ā Sheās known as unflinchingly candid, but is in denial of many things in her life to the point that she lies about them in her writing. Specifically, sheās kept secrets about her late husband from her two younger children, deciding that happy childhood memories, even false ones, are better than the truth. Sheās full of wishful thinking and joie de vivre, and in her lies reveals her innermost truths. Just wants her and her children to be happy.
Elliot BanningĀ Roseās oldest child. Age 33. Hospice doctor with a wicked sense of dark humor. Does fostercare with his wife. The peacemaker in the family. He shares his motherās aptitude for storytelling (heās learned from the best, afterall), which earns her affection. Itās revealed partway through the play that heās known his motherās secret all along, and has kept it from his siblings. His relationship with this secret is further complicated by recently becoming a father.
Heather Banning Roseās middle child and only daughter. Age 30. Thinks sheās the least favorite child. Is actually the favorite. Competitive with, jealous of, and threatened by herĀ āmore interestingā brothers (āa hospice doctor and drug addictāI canāt compete with that.ā) Wannabe vlog star. Longs to be successful and have adoring fans like her mother, but lacks her talent for engaging an audience. Insecure. Self absorbed. Has infinite hope. Although she often lets her jealousy get the best of her, she cares deeply for her family.
Owen Banning Roseās youngest child. Age 28. Has the most strained relationship with his mother. Always told he reminds her of his father, but never understood the depths of this until the events of the play. Recovered heroin addictāhas been sober for two years and recently baptised. Spent most of his adult life in and out of facilities. Amazing painter. Hates Heatherās view of him as the tortured artist. Hates his familyās publicity, but allows his mother to write about him, although he canāt bring himself to read her works.
Natalie Banning Elliotās wife. Age 34. Grief counselor, works specifically with children. Met Elliot through the hospice they both work at. Straight forward. Confident. Will not suffer fools, but is very compassionate, especially towards underdogs. Planning to have more children - both biological and adopted - with Elliot.
McKenna Banning Elliot and Natalieās recently adopted eight-year-old daughter. Lived with her parents as a foster child for over a year before being adopted. When given the choice by her lawyer, chose to change her first name upon adoption for a new start. Named herself after her favorite doll.Ā
There may also be one additional character who is an interviewer/love interest for Heather, but for now these are the definite characters.
Seeing as this is a play and not a book that can be posted in the same way, Iām not worried about spoilers. Ask away. Currently, Iām outlining this, as the plotpoints are like intricate gears in a clock I want to time very precisely.
Iāll have an official page up for this soon. You can follow it as #down will come baby
