Ridiculous yet effective ways to deal with Executive Dysfunction
Dealing with executive dysfunction and ADHD becomes so much easier when you stop trying to do things the way you feel like you should be able to do them (like everyone else) and start finding ways that actually work for you, no matter how âsillyâ or âunnecessaryâ they seem.
For years my floor was constantly covered in laundry. Clean laundry got mixed in with dirty and I had to wash things twice, just making more work for myself. Now I just have 3 laundry bins: dirty (wash it later), clean (put it away later), and mystery (figure it out later). Sure, theoretically I could sort my clothes into dirty or clean as soon as I take them off and put them away straight out of the dryer, but realistically thatâs never going to be a sustainable strategy for me.
How many garbage bins do you need in a bedroom? One? WRONG! The correct answer is one within arms reach at all times. Which for me is three. Because am I really going to get up to blow my nose when Iâm hyperfocusing? NO. In allergy season I even have an empty kleenex box for âused tissues I can use again.â Kinda gross? Yeah. But less gross than a snowy winter landscape of dusty germs on my desk.
I used to be late all the time because I couldnât find my house key. But it costs $2.50 and 3 minutes to copy a key, so now thereâs one in my backpack, my purse, my gym bag, my wallet, my desk, and hanging on my door. Problem solved.
Iâm like a ninja for getting pout the door past reminder notes without noticing. If I really donât want to forget something, I make a physical barrier in front of my door. A sticky note is a lot easier to walk past than a two foot high cardboard box with my wallet on top of it.
Executive dysfunction is always going to cause challenges, but often half the struggle is trying to cope by pretending not to have executive dysfunction, instead of finding actual solutions.
i left cabinet doors open all my life and couldnât make myself stop leaving them open until i figured out my subconscious just wants to know where everything is at a glance. i put labels on each cabinet door for what was behind the cabinet and after that i was a lot better at closing them.Â
showers are hard for me because they involve a lot of steps to get in and out. buying cleaning hand wipes helps me stay a lot cleaner and happier when iâm too tired or distracted to make myself be a normal personâ theyâre faster and involve way less prep time, decision making, and unpleasant physical sensations.Â
i have disordered eating because, again, getting food is complicated, much less cooking anything. buying 10-12$ of cliff bars at a go and keeping them in my room by my bed gives me a headstart on breakfast and lets me take my meds on time. otherwise i would lie in bed, not taking my meds because i had to eat, and not eating because i was too tired and nauseous from being hungry to get out of bed. Â
âjust try harderâ is not a solution. figuring out the actual problem and addressing it is the solution.
ânormalâ isnât the goal. you canât be normal. itâs too late, but you know what, fuck normal. trying to be normal is going to kill you. âfunctionalâ is the goal, and you can be functional. you can kick ass at functional. and thatâs a lot better.Â
When I talk about how there is no universal system for Keeping Your Shit Together, and how itâs more important to find a system that works for you, this is exactly the kind of thing I mean.Â
My keys hang on the door so I literally canât leave my apartment without touching them. My socks kept getting everywhere when I kept them with my other clothes, so instead I now keep them in a little hutch in the kitchen, where I keep all my shoes. All my silverware is in jars on my kitchen island so I can see clearly when I am out of forks. When I didnât want to put on my socks to go running, I bought running shoes that didnât require socks. There are people who would find all of the above unworkable and/or appalling but they donât have to live my life and I do.Â
Find what works for you and work it. Doesnât matter if itâs weird or unusual or not as healthy as some weird ideal which is probably just a marketing tool anyway. If it works, work it.Â
Off-topic but really important and relatable to my life. Make your own functionality, it really does make life so much better!
Do you ever go to the gym to lift and see smaller women lifting like 5-10lbs weights for maybe 15 reps and a single set and get frustrated with them? Like why are you even doing that? Maybe it's just me...
Yeah, I think itâs just you and all the other gym douchebags.
For real. Who the fuck do you think you are judging someone for the way they workout? Theyâre there, trying to better themselves and work towards THEIR goals, not your goals, THEIR goals.
You know, itâs because of people like you that some people wont set foot in a gym. People are so terrified of being judged by cunts like you for what they lift and how they workout that they never even try. I donât know how you can be happy with yourself knowing that. Thatâs fucked up.
Perhaps you should put your head down and work towards your own goals instead of worrying about what other people are doing.

Holy sh*t! Just watched this 720 spinning kick KO about 17 times..
I would 100% do this.
âRat Parkâ -Stuart McMillen
Youâll never think about drug addiction the same way again after reading this comic.
What I found absolutely impressive and stunning about this comic is the way the artist explained the identification and elimination of the confounding factors in the Rat Park study. This is one of the hardest parts of experiments to explain to the public, and I think it was just brilliantly done.
This is long, but worth the read. My day job is in substance and mental health treatment, and I rarely see one without the other. Over and over I read case files and think, "I would have been a hopeless addict 10 years earlier and 10 times worse if I'd gone through half that." Drug abuse is, by and large, a symptom and not a cause. There are vast numbers of people numbing mental pain and desperation, numbing trauma, numbing abuse, numbing the near-hopeless lot they've been given in life.
Addiction is not simple and it's not easy to treat, and if we're going to make any progress we need to change the public perception of what drugs are and why people use them. The real, causal problems are societal, financial, and social, and far beyond what "ban drugs" can ever solve. We need real solutions.
deep thoughts
Talked with a coworker about seeking a different martial art today. She takes kung fu at a studio where they teach kung fu and tai chi, at only 40 dollars a month. She had nothing but awesome things to say, really assuaged my fears of an Americanized and uprooted education, and Iâm thinking about taking a free class just to get a feel of it
Lately Iâve been at a cross roads of starting back with my discipline and starting a new one. I think that Iâll have to do one or the other for right now only because I have three jobs and thatâs not going to change till I get back into school. And until then I think Iâd like to focus in one direction or another and branch to double-attending martial arts when I have the chance, time, and energy to do so.
So, my short list of arts to possibly start in are wing chun, kung fu, MMA, or possibly judo, as far as close options and schools Iâd trust near me. Tae kwon do, there is only 1 school near me I like, and of course price is a factor because Iâm still a newly graduated college student, even if I am more well off than others.
Any feedback, y'all???
All sound cool, check whats near you and see which dojo has the best culture. Honsetly training envorment is just as vital as martial arts dicipline. See whihc one seems like fun to you. Ive seen some very shitty mma dojos and Iâve seen great wing chun schools. Most schools offer free trials so check em out.
^^^ Ditto^^^ try them all out, or at least go and observe a class.
^^^ This. Individual school culture and instruction trumps everything. Find the place where the students seem the happiest, and the skill level seems high. Try classes before you sign up, and if they won't let you try classes before you pay, run for the hills.
The greatest, biggest part of fitness isn't physical change. It's mental change! Learn to love your flawed body; And, it will reward you in return.
This is so much bigger than people realize

This is the most adorable thing Iâve ever seen
Therapy Sword⢠saved my life!
I've read your posts on female armor, and it really helped me with designing armor for my female superhero, but I have a concern: would wearing a flat breastplate inhibit a well-endowed woman? It almost seems like it would make it hard for her to breathe, especially if she's bigger and taller than average (my character stands at 6' 2")
That⌠is an anime gag.
There are medical conditions which can cause this, but if thereâs breathing issues then thatâs a clothing issue and if the armor is causing you to be short of breath then⌠the armor is useless and not doing its job.
Corsets and any sort of binding that doesnât allow the lungs/chest cavity/ribs/diaphragm to expand will cause shortness of breath in⌠either gender. It is historically more common in women because of, well, fashion. You didnât need to be well-endowed to fall prey to the whale-bone corsets of the 18th century. (Which also led to miscarriages.)
The argument youâre referring to is one common among fanboys, primarily as a justification for boobplate and the fetishistic armor choices for female superheroes. For all itâs claims to realism, it has zero bearing on reality.
The weight of your boobs doesnât make you short of breath or hamper your ability to breathe. It can, in some cases, be painful during high energy activities when theyâre bouncing around but the solution is called a sports bra. (Besides, big boobs can disappear fast depending on the type of activity. You ever seen runners or professional female athletes in almost⌠well, anything? Muscle burns fat, and your chest muscles will start with your chest. No fat, they shrink.)
The Most Common Superpower joke is that women get to keep theirs and stay conventionally attractive when engaging in highly aerobic activity.
If we want to start with the issue in the presentation of female action heroes it begins here. (And that men, and some women, usually donât understand how breasts work.) Or have this idea the issue has never been addressed because women donât participate in sport activity anyway.
Breasts. Are. Just. There.
Sheâs a superhero. Her armor is custom designed. If whoever made her armor didnât take into account the size of her chest or provide support then they are crappy at their job and armor design in general.
The issues we run into with armor is when it is either:
A) Not yours. Or..
B) One size fits all, but youâd still be able to function in it.
If you canât move in the armor then thatâs an issue that needs to be addressed at a design level but itâs not insurmountable. This is why armorers and tailors exist.
Besides, if the other option youâre considering is boob plate then that wouldnât solve the issue. I guarantee boob plate is more uncomfortable, and will guide weapon points straight to your heart. This is an argument Iâve seen brought up a lot (by men) to justify the existence of boobplate or going without armor for ârealismâ. It is not only BS, itâs annoying. It ignores both reality (female combatants of history) and human ingenuity to prop up outdated sexism. Itâs like they think female athletes never address the issues of their chest size. Well, Iâm here to tell you: we already solved this one and itâs called a sports bra. In the real world, we get a bras that are designed to support the weight of our boobage during athletic activities.
Women can, however, STILL RUN without problems with a regular bra or even no support at all.
You, however, may want to address the underlying sexism nipping at your approach to this character. If you genuinely believe cramming big breasts into a tactical vest is going to cause breathing issues then youâve got a lot of your own to work out. That is also the problem with sexism. The misinformation is so baked into every bit of common knowledge meant to justify a certain sexist approach then held up as realistic that most people never think about it.
Again, the kind of breathing issues weâre talking about come from corsets and not armor. A corset tightens your waist, and will result in issues because of the diaphram/stomach canât expand. When performing aerobic exercise, you need your diaphragm (thus expanding your ribs) to breathe. The diaphragm allows more air to pass through your body, which means more oxygen in your blood being carried to your muscles. Without them, youâre stuck breathing entirely with your upper chest, and that will be a problem when engaging in athletic activity. If the expansion of the chest is also cut off, then⌠youâre really up a creek. This is what causes the fainting fits of the 18th century. Women wearing clothing that doesnât allow them to draw enough oxygen into their bodies to keep their brains cognizant.
Itâs also why you never want to bind your breasts with anything like Ace bandages because Ace bandages are designed to continually constrict around an injury and create pressure to halt the blood flow. They can tighten so much that they crack the breastbone or the ribcage, and that is what causes shortness of breath rather than the breasts themselves being bound.
You donât get this problem if you bind with just cloth, but itâs also shit for support.
Breathing issues are a problem for men when they wear clothing styles that ensure their diaphragms canât expand or just donât breathe with their diaphragm when fighting.
If her armor causing shortness of breath then thatâs not armor, itâs fetish gear. It may be great for a bondage session but itâs not meant to be worn combat. (And if what sheâs wearing is causing shortness of breath anyway, then she just needs to stop wearing it. Thatâs still the fault of her clothing and not her breasts.)
Besides, a woman with large breasts would have issues finding bras that fit her anyway and would probably be specially ordering them. Most malls and sports stores have bras for A, B, C, and some D but not a lot. DDâs can have trouble finding comfortable breastwear, especially ones in the six foot range.

Wonder Woman | Robin Wright | General Antiope
There are so many things I loved about Wonder Woman, but Robin Wright as Antiope was right up there at the top.
So freaking gorgeous.
Someone at judo tonight couldnât remember my name, so to get my attention they called out âHey! Arm bar girl!âÂ
Martial arts goals.
