Never Kill a Boy on the First Date vs First Date
I just would like to say that it is such bull crap the way the scoobies treat Buffy when she comes back in season 3. Let’s recap the things Buffy went through at the end of season 2: Buffy’s mom told her to never come back, she got expelled from school, and she killed the love of her life because XANDER didn’t tell her that Willow was doing a spell to bring Angel back. Still Buffy did all this so she could save the world. I’m pretty sure Buffy leaving was justified. But all the scoobies can think about is themselves and how they felt abandoned. They didn’t appreciate that she was back. Instead, they were mad at her for their selfish reasons and then threw a party at her own place, when it’s clear that Buffy is still upset. Even Joyce says it’s worse that Buffy is back! I mean maybe I’m completely biased because I honestly think Buffy is perfect. But yeah, Buffy fans please give me your opinion on this!
I love Buffy, but there are many times in the series where her friends needed to call her out for her actions. Though we, the viewer, know exactly what happened to Buffy during Becoming/after , her friends do not. They know very little, just that their friend up and left them. Hormonal teenagers going through stuff of their own do tend to be selfish. Not that it’s right, but it explains it.
Buffy also overrated to Joyce’s “now get out and stay out!”, something a parent will snap at their offspring in the heat of anger. Joyce definitely didn’t mean for Buffy to leave. Buffy was technically a teenage runaway, though we the viewer know it was justified, her peers and mother don’t. I don’t think Joyce EVER finds out about Becoming/s2-3 before her death, actually..
As for Joyce, she was having trouble adjusting, but never did she say that she actually thought that it was worse to have Buffy back.Â

I hear you, but… they never asked. That’s why they don’t know. They never actually asked Buffy what happened, what she was going through, or what she needed/wanted after her traumatic experience. They made assumptions, and then blew up at her when she reacted in less-than-stellar fashion, thanks to her depression and horrible life circumstances. Cordelia is the only one who tries to empathize with her, and Giles is the only one who suggests asking Buffy what she wants. (He is later the only one who tries to get her to talk about what happened during “Becoming”.) Willow, Xander, and Joyce don’t do that. I think it’s a consistent character flaw, especially on the part of Willow and Xander, who go through this same process again in S6- not asking Buffy where she’s at or what she needs, and then making assumptions about what they should do to make things better, without consulting her. I think that’s a big reason why she ends up confiding in Spike and later Tara, rather than either of them.
Did Buffy mess up by running away? Yes. Yes she did. But she messed up after saving the world by killing her boyfriend. She messed up after being rejected by her mother and told not to come home. She messed up after finding Kendra killed, being framed for the murder, and getting expelled from school, pretty much all in the same night. Buffy has been through a ton of traumatic stuff in a very short time frame, and her friends and mother ultimately react by publicly humiliating her for putting *them* through hardship. Even if she did need to be “called out” (and I would argue that this is not really an instance of that, though there are times when she does), that’s not the way to do it. Any way you slice it, that is not representative of good friendship or good parenting, and I think it’s probably a big reason why Buffy ends up shutting Willow and Xander out during S6, opting to confide in people like Spike and Tara instead.
Absolutely, we should understand why Willow, Xander, and Joyce react the way they do here. But I don’t think we should simply excuse them, and I don’t think we should ignore this moment when we think about what sort of friends the scoobies really are.
I love his face in the second gif.

What's the best piece of writing advice you ever received? What's the worst?
The worst piece of advice I ever had was when a pal told me not to be a writer, because I’d never get out of my Dad’s shadow. I’m glad I didn’t pay attention - I would’ve missed out on doing the thing that makes me happiest. Besides: Everyone who writes horror works in my Dad’s shadow. Everyone who writes fantasy works in J.R.R. Tolkien’s shadow; everyone who writes SF works in Orwell’s; and on and on. Everyone has to contend with their literary father/mother, regardless of whether that person is their actual father or mother. Looked at from that point of view, my situation is not at all unique.
Best advice? That’s tougher. I’ve had a lot of excellent advice over the years and a lot of amazing teachers. But I think I learn more from good examples than from good advice. Most of what I know about writing I learned from reading and rereading and rereading again: my dad, my mom, my brother, and also Bernard Malamud, Kelly Link, Neil Gaiman, David Mitchell, Kate Atkinson, Elmore Leonard, J.K. Rowling. I think if you want to write in a serious, passionate, every-day kind of way, you have to read in a serious, passionate, every-day kind of way.
