"Used to be? You're still cool, Bakugo! Don't forget that!" She placed her hands on her hips.

“I don’t have a fucking quirk. Not anymore. Losing my quirk was one of the least cool things I could do.”

She shifted, crossing her arms. "Really...?" She sighed heavily, then stepped closer to him. "I'm going to be real with you. This... right here... is the least cool thing you can do. Yeah, you lost your quirk. So did Hawks. So did Izuku. But sulking? That isn't the Bakugo I know..."

“It’s not sulking.” He hissed, sending her a glare. It was his own damn fault people lost their quirks. If he hadn’t been weak—If he hadn’t failed—maybe they’d still keep their quirks. His own quirk was none of his concern.

She crossed her arms again, not backing down. "Then what is it?"

“None of your fuckin’ business. Call it sulking. I don’t care. You wouldn’t understand.”

She frowned, then looked down. "No... I don't understand. And I won't pretend to... But don't forget... I was there too..."

She held her arms. "I can't simply stand by and let the one who saved my life and countless others drag himself down like this...."

“Then don’t. You don’t owe me anything. No one does. I failed you all.”

She felt a pang in her chest and she shook her head. "No... That's not true! If you failed then you wouldn't even be here... More people would be dead... We... I wouldn't be here, either..."

He sighed, staring past her. She was wrong. People died because of his inability to help. He failed as a hero and couldn't even make it up to anybody. He couldn't even better himself for Midoriya. "I failed."

She shook her head. "You're only failing if you let your quirk define you... Those were the words that you told me back at UA... But... if you continue to blame... then..." She took in a shaky breath, then looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"...Blame me..."

“No. It’s isn’t your fucking fault that I failed. Everything I did was a mix of stupid mistakes. No one failed me. Only I did.” It didn’t seem like that hard of a concept to understand. No one else had failed. Everyone else tried their hardest. But Bakugou was slacking. He was his own demise.

She stepped closer, her eyes glued to his. "Bakugo, I'm the reason you have a hole in your chest... You died because of me... Hell, I might as well have taken your quirk myself...."

“I wasn’t being careful. It’s my fault, not yours.”

A tear slowly rolled down her cheeks. "It is... I got caught. I didn't watch my own back. You risked your own life to save mine... Are you saying you regret saving my life?"

“No. I just could’ve been better! I should have done better!” He was stupid. Never planning things out, never adjusting. Nothing. He was nothing.

"For the love of-... You did! You did everything you could!" She held herself. "I can't just sit by and watch someone I lo-" She caught herself. "... Someone I care about... hurt himself like this... I can't let you throw away everything you trained for..."

“Everything I trained relied on me having a quirk. Without it, I’m nothing. Just an absolute mess of a person.” He couldn’t even fix anything now. He ruined all his friendships. His mother was probably embarrassed, just hiding it under coddling.

*Hezekiel, because it's Hezekiel without the gas mask, looks pleasantly surprised, maybe even proud somewhere beneath the undereye circles and greying temples. He tugs his gas mask on and ties back his twists before tightening the back straps. There's a confidence in his stance, in the way his shoulders sit, that wasn't there before. Snipe, because he's Snipe with the gas mask, calls a goodbye to a probably empty dorm common room behind him. Shouldering a large black archery bag and falling into step beside Katsuki*

You didn’t sound confident in me in the slightest

Katsuki’s stance holds that same cocky appearance. He has an appearance to uphold, after all. Even with his general lack in confidence, he still has to fit that role. For his classmates. For himself. For a lot of people

*Snipe tilts his head just so that the glow of his orange-yellow eye shines through the lenticular lenses of his gas mask. He's sizing Katsuki up, like a talent scout at a college varsity game. He shrugs a shoulder and looks away, a warm huff of laughter just barely distorted through his mask*

Had t'make sure ya'd give ya all.

Katsuki notices that he was being sized up and ends up standing up a little taller. Just to make sure.

Well, I did. Ran the whole way. Hurt like hell too

I'm sure ya know that ain't good practice. Don't go runnin' to the gallery, my legs ain't like they used t'be.

*Snipe shudders momentarily, muttering something in English under his breath, about fathers and sounding like them. He rolls his shoulders and adjusts the archery bag. He walks with purpose, if a little stiffly*

Wasn’t planning on it

Katsuki walked beside Snipe, but he ended up stopping often, having to catch up periodically. His body was killing him. Running to the dorms was a bad idea

*Snipe stops, dead in his tracks, and crosses his arms. His cloak, partly bunched under the strap of the archery bag, keeps his arms visible. He's without his gloves, scars criss-cross over his forearms, some gone ashy and ever so slightly lighter than his skin, some darkened, purpled, raised. A few look like gunshot wounds, small, imperfect crescents.*

If ya need a break, ya tell me.

*Snipe's voice, distorted through his mask, is firm but not judgemental.*

Katsuki’s voice is strained. He is in quite a bit more pain than he was anticipating when he made the choice to run to the dorms.

Will I even be able to do this? With my arm?

I don't know. We'll find tha' out together. Tha's why ya gonna tell me when somethin' hurts more than jus' warmups. I ain't know ya well enough to know ya limits, so ya gon' have to tell me.

*Snipe crouches on the path, shoving a hand into his left holster, devoid of its handgun. He produces a dark chocolate and raspberry protein bar. From the packaging, it seems to be imported. He gestures for Katsuki to crouch beside him before undoing his gas mask, laying it eyes-up on his knee. Hezekiel pulls a plastic water bottle from his right holster and cracks it open, tipping his head back to practically pour water into his mouth before holding it out for Katsuki*

Wanna know somethin', partner? 'Bout before I became the chivalrous hero ya see before ya?

*Hezekiel's tone is dry and sarcastic, but the smile he gives is sincere*

Katsuki rolls his eyes at Snipe insisting that he tells him when he’s hurting, but doesn’t fight it. He knows better than to be pushing himself to death months after he had already pushed himself to death.

Yeah, sure. I wanna know your damn story

He crouches beside Hezekiel, genuinely curious about the story. Katsuki does not remember much about the hero, despite his childhood obsession with learning about all the heroes he could.

When I firs' learned how to shoot- guns, I mean- my quirk didn't work wi'h bullets. I weren't bad at it. I had a good teacher, but I were frustrated all the time. Every other sport was either too hard or too easy, made my Pa- my coach proud that I wanted to be good at it.

*Hezekiel looks at Katsuki, handing over both the protein bar and the water bottle, nodding seemingly to himself*

Worked day an' night, were lucky the shootin' range were in bikin' distance, one day my coach watched me. I'd worked so hard an' I weren't all that much better than when I started an' I got angry. I got so angry at him, at m'self, at the sport, my quirk done evolved. Next shot I fired I could feel it, there just at the edge of my consciousness, like a phantom limb. Went straight, perfect, into the target. Just where I wanted. Felt like I'd become useless, that all my work meant nothin' 'cause the one thing I could do by m'self were ripped outta m'hands. Worst part was I finally made m'coach proud, and it weren't even me, not really.

*Hezekiel shakes his head, one of his twists slips from the hairband and dangles free in front of his face*

I know it ain't the same as you, but- well, I know what it's like to be good at somethin' just for it to go 'way. So, all o' this-

*Hezekiel seems to lose his confidence, a bit. Gesturing to the archery bag limply, reaching up to push a hand into his twists, tugging at the partings, a few more slip free*

I wanna find ya somethin' ya can do. Because gettin' somethin' ya can do now, makes all the thin's ya used to be able to do seem a lot more manageable. We can get ya back what we can an' fill in the gaps wi'h new thin's

Katsuki keeps a firm grip on the water bottle as he listens to the story, his eyes fixed on the ground in front of him the whole time. Something about Hezekial’s past really felt similar to what had happened to him. Because he understood feeling all that hard work getting ripped away. And it wasn’t often that someone had experienced something so that they could understand that. And it wasn’t often that people even chose to understand it.

Katsuki’s classmates, despite all their sorries, didn’t understand the true devastation that he felt.

I can try my best then. Might not be so good, with the arm and all, but I’ll try. I just need to find something. Anything

No one said ya had to be good, ya jus' have to enjoy it.

*Hezekiel huffs softly. Takes out his ponytail and gathers his twists, tying them back again. They're overgrown, gone fuzzy at the partings, he has his edges left out, most are natural black, but those close to his temples have an odd sheen in the light. Dyed black, covering the grey. He glances at Katsuki, question in his eyes and nods toward the path*

Katsuki is careful as he gets up, trying not to strain his body. His hold on the water bottle has loosened, his arm falling to his side.

*Hezekiel nods, standing and stretching, arms above his head, mask in one hand. His shirt and waistcoat ride up. Whilst he's not massively tall, when stretched to his full height, he could be intimidating. He slips the gas mask on, tightens the straps, and starts walking. He takes on a leisurely pace, humming a bit to himself. It sounds like Aura Lee*

Katsuki follows suit, trying to still keep pace with Snipe. His own form is much more relaxed now, less worried about keeping up his appearance for the time being. He was listening carefully in case Snipe ended up saying something to him

*Snipe stops outside a training building. It looks practically the same as all the others. Brutalist plain concrete, he tries the door and swears, digging into his pockets for a bunch of keys. He unlocks the door and shoulders it open, setting down the archery bag.

Inside, the usual training zone has been sectioned into two long galleys, presumably with Cementoss' help. There are paper targets of full human bodies, clipped onto clothes hangers in each. One has been used, and holes litter it around the knees, feet, and elbows. One stray hole‐ more like a tear, is just shy of the head. Snipe spots it and grumbles under his breath*

Darn Uzumichi- how many times have I got to tell that girl to reset the targets when she's done?

*Each galley has a half-wall at its mouth, Snipe vaults over and tears off the used target and stops to stare at small, metallic blue painted Things. He studies the target as he wanders back up the valley, barely looking away from it as he vaults himself over again. He walks to the back wall and places the target paper on a pile of its brothers, next to a small stack of thick, foam targets. Square, blue with three rings in the center, red, orange, yellow. There are slits through the colored foam. Snipe hefts one up onto his shoulder with a grunt, carrying it to the galley and carefully setting it over the wall. He follows and hefts it up again. Once it's at the back, he returns to Katsuki*

Katsuki stares at the targets, intrigued yet growing aware that he is no longer able to do that sort of thing. His stance becomes far less relaxed, falling back to his faux overconfidence to hide the fact that he is in fact jealous over someone being better than him now

That girl could take out tape face. Completely out of commission

Katsuki places his hands in his pockets as he watches Snipe replace the target. He would offer to help, but it is just a single target. Not much that he can do to help.

*Snipe wanders back to Katsuki, then swerves to begin unpacking the archery bag. He pulls out a large, unstrung hunting bow, its string, arrows and a hip quiver. At Katsuki's words he tilts his head back, picking up the bow and stringing it with a huff of effort.*

Tape face? Which one o' ya classmates is tha'? They's better not'a picked Tape Face as they's hero name... Anythin' would be better than tha'

*He puts down the bow after testing the tension of the string. He reaches into the bag again and pulls out a pair of gloves, throwing them to Katsuki.*

Now, I ain't gonna lie to ya, ya arm is gonna make this hard. I don't doubt ya ability to learn how t' do this, but i doubt tha' ya's gonna figure it out today. This bow- m' sister bought it custom f'r me when i graduated, it's built for m' height. It's gonna make this a couple more steps difficult, I need ya t' tell me- No. I need ya t' promise me tha' ya won't start sayin' ya can't do this. We won't know that for sure until we try gettin' ya a bow that works wi'h ya not against ya
