[I'm throwing stones mainly at the "omg they are cheating on me!" misunderstanding trope - the "just fucking talk to each other" trope]

So, what could be a fun way to utilize the misunderstanding trope for a relationship that *does* embody trust and communication?

Erosion.

Have the pair be hit repeatedly with misunderstandings. The first few times, they talk it out and maybe even have evidence. It still hurts em a little, but they work through it.

But then it keeps going.

So, the pair tries to find ways to prevent misunderstandings. They develop methods so that the situation seems to improve. The misunderstandings seem to drop.

Yet, they become more complicated.

Someone or something out there is working desperately to drive a wedge between them. This initially strengthens their relationship as they draw closer to each other.

... but all those misunderstandings start to add up. The doubts and suspicions trickle in. They may be unwilling to blame the other, but when their perception is continually tested? When their ability to understand situations seems to be consistently challenged? At the very least, they will grow wary of everything and even themselves.
